Three Habs cleared of wrongdoing: report

posted by Dave Stubbs at 13h08 EST on May 29

A Journal de Montréal report today has Montreal police clearing brothers Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn and Roman Hamrlik of any wrongdoing in a situation that a Montreal newspaper reported in a sweeping, multi-page exclusive this season would bring the franchise to its knees.

Thankfully, we managed to dodge the bullet on Mats Sunbeam, now trade the Brothers K and PLEASE BOB DO NOT SIGN THE SEDIN SISTERS!!! Thank you.

Is Tallon as great as everyone thinks he is? Signing Huet and Campbell was foolishness and he will only compound his dilemma by re-signing Havlat and The Bulin Wall. It doesn't take a gneius to draft Kane, Barker, and Toews when you finish at the bottom of the heap every year. Now we will find out just how crafty Mr. Tallon is - especially seeing that his back will soon be against the wall (no pun intended).

Steve - He's much like another Black Hawk, GM Wilson in San Jose, when they decide they need a certain player to advance their team then the sky is the limit. I agree with you on those questionable big moves but at least he made an attempt, not like someone else you are familiar with. Tallon's file has many great minor moves to go along with some nice draft picks after the first round and they are not all diminutive. The money he paid Huet this season could of got him that missing link that would of beat your Wings or allowed him to keep your friend Robert Lang, lol.

... Jim Matheson's Sunday Journal: (an excerpt) ... Trade for Harding. Should the Oilers deal left-winger Robert Nilsson, or Rob Schremp and a second-round draft pick, to Minnesota to get Josh Harding, the Wild's young backup goalie? Harding is never going to play regularly with Minnesota. He's stuck behind Niklas Backstrom, but the Wild likely wants to retrieve Patrick O'Sullivan in any deal with the Oilers. ........... and the rest of sundat's article http://www.edmontonjournal.com/Sports/MacTavish+Wild+candidate/1647937/s...

the sedin twins and the kostitsyn bros on the same team? would that be a first in the NHL where i team has 2 sets of brothers on the same roster?

Signing the Sedins would not be that bad - there are not too many players in the nhl that average close to a point a game or better......

habs12345's picture
i agree i think it would be a perfect fit for the habs

Hi! good news is that the internet (combo of google ads + craigslist) will destroy newspapers. bad news is that the trend will take a while. kostadis

habs12345's picture
with the cap space montreal has and the sedins wanting too stay together it might be a really good move too sign both players that would form a strong top line with excellent puck control and set play qualities

habs12345's picture
also hey our top six would have plenty of brotherly love wih the sedins line and the kostitsyn line

This guy skates like the wind - he is certainly on the Habs' radar for a first round pick. He was my sleeper pick but crafty NM49 beat me to it.

Cool read thxs for sharing.

Just another reason to get out of Montreal, or never come there in the first place for a player. The idiotic, myoptic, sensationalistic French media, made a mountain out of a mole hill. They did their part to throw a monkey wrench into the Habs organization, and I must say they succeeded. I happen to live in another Canadian NHL city ( not TO) that actually lets the players have their own lives outside of the rink. Why go to Montreal to be put under the French inquisition, where you are always wrong, until the French media proves they were wrong in the first place. Good luck signing FA's BG, as this hick of a backwater, bedroom voyeuring media city will do their best to make sure all that is left in the FA pool for Les Glorieux is the bottom dregs!!

MTL is not just another NHL town. If the media is keeping you from going to a place where hockey was born and the heat is high when ya lose, but over the top rewards are also there when you win then Mtl shouldn't want them anyway. the N.H.L today is filled with ego driven greedy children. Wake-up, when your an N.H.L player or a pro in any other sport you are public property, that should be part of a players responsibility "role model" ect. This *** your peddl'in is lame!

Hammer's picture
Interesting, but " public property", left during Lincoln. Didn't think we lived in North Korea.

Geese,I seem to remember during the Oilers haydays all the talk On how Anderson was gay ,and Grant Fuer was a coke head and Messier A lady slayer.....And in Vancouver all the stuff about Bertuzzi ,and ALL THE LEAF STORIES that have come and gone ...not to mention the things said about the Senators.....The other teams in pro Football, basketball, english football etc....And if Burke can get players to go to the laff's and Gainey can't then we NEED A NEW G.M.........

Your kidding right ??? A monkey could attract talent to Toronto. For years now a great many players have made no secret that they would love to play in Toronto. Montreal on the other hand is vastly different, with taxes and the crazy voyeuristic media. Hell, even a player agent ( who wished to remain anonymous) came out recently in the media and said it is well known around the league that 80% of players have no desire to come to Montreal for just these reasons. This isn't an opinion, it is fact. I don't think it is a coincidence that Gainey had ZERO problem attracting top FA's in Dallas but has trouble in Montreal. Gainey's abilities or his credentials have not changed. It isn't Gainey that is the problem with FA's. As a matter of fact, Gainey is so respected around the league, that he would have a better chance than most of attracting talent.

punkster's picture
LOL...good one. In my previous life (as a Leaf fan living in T.O in the late 70s thru the 80s...please, don't go down that road, I've done my penance) I clearly remember the constant talk about the supposed "gay" players. But hey, every day under H. Ballard was a tabloid headline for those guys.

and wendel clark was 1 of them, considering that we lived with toller cranston who was gay!

How did that work out for the leafs during that time?

punkster's picture
Ha. True...nothing that happens there seems to have worked out for the past 40 plus years, period.

oshawahabsfan's picture
As I said when this came out, just another case of the idiotic media making a huge story out of nothing.

By the way I wouldn't put the Kostitsyns on the block to quickly, especially Andrei....although with the way Gainey seems to play favourites u never know (Price and Kovalev)

Nice to see that the Kostitsyns are cleared....hopefully now the media and fans can get off their backs so that they can continue on their young careers without the distractions....and hopefully the Kostitsyns don't give the media any reason to get on their backs either

... There are three bloggers that write for Canes Country and they know their hockey, especially Cory. I like that they put their cards on the table for all to see like at free agency time and don't copy what other beat writers and radio personalities promote, here's an example ... 'Three Take on Carolina's Free Agency' ..... http://www.canescountry.com/2009/5/29/892700/three-takes-on-carolina-fre... ............ (GM Bob should keep Seidenberg's name on page #1 or close).

RetroMikey's picture
Nice cover up by the police and the media for this story. We all know what happened to Kovalev confronting the Kostistyn boys one night in Montreal, eh? There are far too many shocking stories out there that the media will just not publish and make a huge scandal in Montreal. Look for Sergei and perhaps Andre to be gone before the start of the season. "We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"

What sources you have Mikey, bring them forward because, otherwise with all due respect, this comes off as a load of crap. and kinda gutless.

forskis's picture
Maybe, maybe not...you know what you know and we know what we know...I will just say this, if this WERE a coverup then the press would be hypocrites....when they took that photo of Koivu with his busted eye and plastered it on the front page, there was outrage at the intrusion of his privacy, but the press defended themselves saying that the public had a right to know how bad it was and that it justified their actions. The same SHOULD apply here...if it is in the public's best interest, the press would have plastered the dirty details about all this as well and the consequences be damned. "Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

Exit716's picture
Right. Why don't you enlighten us all about these hidden details on your own public website?

hmmmm? "Rebuilding the team around Kovalev is a road to nowhere" - 24 Cups

Depends how he FEELS! enough said.

Poor choices are all a part of Growing Up. The K's had a tough time last year. I'm not going to judge these "kids" i made a few blunders in my youth as well.I'm a hab fan and as such i would advise the Habs brass not to be to hasty in letting these Kids get away, they both have a lot of upside under the right coaching and atmosphere. I really hope that Lever find's his way behind the bench in some capacity players really seem to respond to this guy especially the young. The language "barrier' has left this organization reeling for long enough it's time to once again make WINNING the 1st priority even if pisses the francophones off, a trip deep into the playoffs will put any resentment's to bed there.

crabvader's picture
I am in complete accordance with you, but you're, unfortunately, preaching to the choir on this one.

Excellent news, no criminal charges!! What a spotlight to have been under. And they each held up so well they should be rewarded. If whoever is to be owning the Habs would let whoever the GM is going to be move the three so they could get a new start somewhere else then the Habs could benefit during this window of opportunity. Like Theodore, it is best they move on, further their careers in less monitored venues, and play their game.

crabvader's picture
Theodore didn't really "better" himself when he left us, lol.

Meh. I still find them guilty of being virtually useless this year.

I noticed something funny. All the main media (TSN, The Gazette, RDS, Le Journal de Montréal, CBC) reported that the Kostitsyns did not do anything wrong, but La Presse didn't. They didn't even bother mentioning this on their website (I don't know if they did in the actual paper because I don't live in Canada) Seriously, this is shameful. ------------------------------------------------------------------- http://softeuropean.wordpress.com

Bryan - Like it or not, our future is aligned with these two self-centred players. The fact that most of our young players seem to be big fish in a little pond is a major concern but I guess we will just have to wait and see how things develop. This team is crying out for true leadership and now it appears that our best leaders might be hitting the road. I'm trying to stay positive but "It Don't Come Easy" (Ringo Starr)

SK46 - Now AK46 is self centered, source. Could someone pass Steve the kleenex.

The Cat's picture
Something smells in all of this...Why would some reporters risk so much credibility and look like such total fools in the end. And if it was nothing, Gainey sure didnt act like it was nothing...But if it was nothing, then the journalists should pay a price by the NHL, cause we may as well let the National Enquirer cover the Detroit Red Wings while were at it.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Victims of circumstance, plus they did not snort....their heads were upside down and the coke fell in their nostrils from the strippers hands, lol

I heard it drifted into their bums as they dumped in public facilities.

Was just reading about the NHL combine. I personally think that the team that gets Hedman is much more well off than the one that gets Tavares. 6'7...big...steady...strong...defenseman.....all characteristics of a franchise D-man. Still can't say for sure if he'll pan out but I think you can't go wrong.

... ? ? ? ? 'Still can't say for sure if he'll pan out but I think you can't go wrong'.

Harani's picture
I meant to say that maybe he's not a franchise players but he is a number D...like Markov...

100HABS's picture
When I looked at Hedman's stats I had a similar thought. He's 18 and he's been playing in the Swedish Elite league for 2 years! He's ready to step up to a top-four role on an NHL team right now.

I'd go for Hedman as well. But, to be fair, I haven't given up on O'Byrne yet. As we learn year in, year out, you can't teach size.

Kevin's picture
You can't teach talent either. You can teach hard work though.

In a related story, the players on the Habs' 2008-09 roster were all cleared of the unjust charge that they played professional hockey last year. Ain't justice great!!!

Ian G Cobb's picture
Our new team will be picked from free agents. Bob will sign 10 forwards and 3 D and he will have 135 free agents forwards to choose from and 100 free agent defenseman to choose from. It will be like drafting a whole new team.

24 Cups's picture
Ian - I don't see many free agents out there that get me excited (in terms of us moving forward to winning a Cup) and the loss of Koivu and Komi is going to be significant. As well, Gillette's pending sale of the team could have us coming out of the gate dead last during the next five weeks. Rebuilding the team around Kovalev is a road to nowhere.

Chuck's picture
Bob has far more flexibility than any other GM this off season. If he chooses well (including UFA's from last year's squad) the Habs will be a very interesting squad to watch come October 1st!

Natrous's picture
I for one am shocked that La Presse and certain ex-coaches didn't jump on this opportunity to "break the story" before TSN could! Wait - wait - now I remember.. it's not negative enough.

habsfan0's picture
2,000 of those calls that Mangiola made involved the Kostitsyns. What were they discussing? The serious problems developing in southeast Asia?

Ian G Cobb's picture
Manufactured stories on any slow day can bring out the Montreal rumour mill and the professional gossips. Are people in general that naive. Or do they just love to roll around in the crap?

The only news that matters surrounds The Breezer's potential signing. Get it done Bob!!!

Ian G Cobb's picture
I sure hope he signs as our 7th D again, he was our best insurance policy last year!

I was thinking more along the lines of a first-line centerman. I heard he has been working on taking draws since the Habs' season ended.

Ian G Cobb's picture
Funny guy! You just wait, Bob will sign 11 forwards and 3 D and he will have 135 free agents forwards to choose from and 100 free agent defenseman to choose from. It will be like drafting a whole new team.

Ian G Cobb's picture
10 forwards---above

It doesn't matter how many forwards you have if you can't get out of your zone.

He'd have much better luck if the team was in Hamilton. Unfortunately, it's in Montreal and no one wants to play there anymore.

Ian G Cobb's picture
Don't believe everything you read my friend. Just wait until the 1st of July and they will be lined up to jump on this train.

Did Happy Hour begin at 4:00pm?

Habsrule1's picture
The Bro's K last chance in Montreal next season, I imagine. I hope they get things going again, not that AK46 has been that bad, just inconsistent. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

Hayward4Price's picture
Without trying to put a damper on all the love the K-bros are suddenly getting (I am beginning to think Mtl fans and press are a bunch of emotional roller coasters...first Carbo now K-Bros!), or passing judgement on the bros since none of us know all the facts, isn't it naive to think they are totally innocent. According to the report 2,000 of 5,000 phone calls being reviewed were with the Kostitsyns...that's 40% of the phone calls being reviewed. Why would anyone need to speak 2,000 times to a fellon? Maybe 1 phone call for each brother saying, "sorry wrong number"...but how does one explain the remaining 1,998?

forskis's picture
Well...if they were friends, it would make sense that they talk often, how many times have we all here, did the "I'll call you back" or phone-tag? And this is over the course of months to a year. Also, the best example of calls run amok...there was a 14 year old in the US who sent 14,000 text messages in a month, which is almost $3,000 USD... "Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

or $39.95 on an "unlimited text messages" plan...

Hayward4Price's picture
I guess that's part of the point. Why make friends with that dude? It's like Lance Armstrong just being friends with a trainer known for doping athletes. Guilty by association. Leaves a bad taste in ones mouth. Perhaps, the habs did a poor job in guiding their youngsters along the right path of having character veterans to take them under their wing a la Mario with Crosby.

forskis's picture
I agree with you on the latter part...having vets guide the kids would have been a good idea...BUT the flip-side is having an adult being baby-sat by an older adult COULD make for a less happy younger adult... "Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

HardHabits's picture
Who are the less happy younger adults, Carey Price, Sergei Kostitsyn et al or the kids with Hawks and/or Malkin and Crosby? The Hawks and Pens took their youngsters under their wing making sure they concentrated on hockey.

TorontoHabsFan's picture
I'm not a lawyer or nothing, but I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to tell legal adults where and with whom they have to live. The oft quoted Crosby/Malkin thing is constantly being mis-represented. The Penguins suggested that both players live with Mario/Gonchar...it's just so happened that doing so agrees with both of their personalities (they're not exactly the most extroverted of people). If at any point Crosby decided that he wanted to move out and into a swinging bachelor pad, well there's not a thing the Penguins can do about it...because he's, you know, an adult (and hasn't committed any crimes)

forskis's picture
Do not get me wrong, I am in complete accordance with the "under-the-wing" thing...I am just pointing out that there is the possibility that if the kids had the wrong attitude, "chaperoning" would make things worse...and if that were the case, then ship them out. "Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

Fire_Laraque's picture
All this for that. Sheesh. Sometimes you have to wonder if the journalists are hockey fans or are just trying to tank our team. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

Well....let's put it this way.....you have mobsters trying to infiltrate organizations via players and relatives/family.....is it really that much of a stretch to think they would try the media angle? Can you imagine? Now that would be a story.

The Habs are just lucky that they have The Impact running interference for them with the Montreal press.

The part that disturbs me about this is Sergei.....why if nothing was going on was he demoted following one of his brighter spurts this season? Was he punished as a scapegoat and a warning to everyone to behave like professionals? Some will say his play warranted it but at the time he was playing some decent hockey and showing shades of last season.

Exit716's picture
How about curtailing the access to the team from that rag? Or a front page apology?

too bad the media respects each other so much because the best remedy for this would be a tit for tat....this labbe characters name trashed in every hockey column across the country.
