Geoff Molson and his brothers, Andrew and Justin, confirmed today that they have made an offer to purchase the Canadiens, the Gillett Entertainment Group and the Bell Centre.

The offer was delivered to team owner George Gillett Jr.

“We have assembled a very solid and credible group of investors and financial institutions as part of our offer,” Geoff Molson, who is the group leader, said in a statement. “They are all dedicated to the long-term success of the Canadiens and have a strong presence in Quebec.

“We think our offer has all the ingredients to be well received by the potential seller and the National Hockey League. We look forward to meeting with them at their earliest convenience.”

Molson said he would not comment any further on the offer, in order to respect the confidentiality agreement binding the parties involved in the process.

great article by Louis Jean of sportsnet.ca on goalie coaches. Since Francois Allaire is a butterfly specialist and off to T.O. how about Pierre Groulx? here's a taste: "Several names have circulated as a potential replacement for Roland Melanson. Goalie guru Francois Allaire had tremendous success with Patrick Roy and J.S. Giguere. His resume is second to none. David Marcoux helped Miikka Kiprusoff become a bona fide No. 1 backstop in the NHL and a Stanley Cup finalist. Pierre Groulx may not be a household name, but he just might be the perfect fit to work with Price and the Canadiens up-and-coming netminders. Although he has much less experience than Allaire and Marcoux, the work he did with the Florida Panthers is impressive. The Panthers were top two in save percentage the past couple of years despite the fact they allowed the most shots. This past season Tomas Vokoun was second in the NHL with a .926 save percentage while Craig Anderson was third at .924. Only Tim Thomas was better with a .933 efficiency rating. Clearly Groulx has been doing something right."

Bill J's picture
Not to mention that if I am not mistaken - both Vokoun & Anderson are classed as "Hybrid" types like Price is.... so landing the goalie coach who helped those 2 on a pathetic FLA team, will surely make Price even better then he was prior to the flop that was the 2nd half of this past season.... Because AGAIN - to remind people the first half of this past season PRICE WAS INCREDIBLE - go check the stats !!!!!

not just groulx alone by martin too...his defensive approach must have limited the quality of shots making is easier for vokoun and anderson to see the puck and make the save. - Pride + Envy = Second Place

Well, considering that guys like him left perfectly good fortifications to confront Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham, I like your chances!

When the team changes ownership to someone who is Canadian and understands Les Canadiens a lot better than current ownership, I would hope that they DON'T go after any of these old, tired, recycled names that have been tossed about since trade deadline. Forget Gaborik, Havlat, the Sedins, etc.....go after some REAL players...Vincent Lecavalier...even Martin St. Louis...you know, someone that will care about the team and not just earning a salary. The chance is there for the new owners to hit it big with the team, the fans of Les Canadiens, and with all of Canada....don't blow it, like the greedy American owner. AMERICANS....GET LOST!!! LES CANADIENS AND THEIR FANS SAY "NON" TO YOU!!

Exit716's picture
Gee. What part of the Quebecor press release mentioned The Rest of Canada? I didn't see any reference to fans outside of Quebec in the Quebecor statement making me feel like I'm not welcome or wanted if Mr. Peledeau wins the bid for the team. I'm sure he'll do nothing but make an already too political hockey team even more so. By the way, my friend where was Mr. Peledeau back in 2000 when the team was first for sale? No where? This Greedy American owner that you comment on turned the franchise into a successful business venture. If you're typical of the new generation of Habs fans, the kind that Boo the American anthem, mock Koivu and anything that's not Quebec, perhaps I should find a new team to cheer for.

You must be an American...because YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! DAMN IT! We don't need more YANK business ventures. Look where it got you in your own country. We would like a hockey team that wins the Stanley Cup. If it means staying away from the 'YANK' mentality...then to hell with you. This team is a legend that has been brought to it's knees by an American owner...AN A**HOLE AMERICAN commissioner, and the whole NHL is suffering from an overall "YANK" mentality. Give the NHL back to us, after all the Stanley Cup and the league belongs to Canada. WHY ARE YANKS RUNNING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!! Who is the dumbass that allowed this to happen. NEW RULE: The league office must cease to exist in it's current state...all American teams except for those that made up the original six should be moved back to Canada or cease to exist...Americans should be removed immediately from any control over our NHL. We're tired of pip squeaks like you saying that we should all get along. The NHL used to be the greatest league, that has been run into the ground by those south of the border. You should be booed for everything that you do. So much for Canadians being nice...EH!! YANK!

By the way. I am not French, and I am not from the province of Quebec. Any dumbass will tell you, however, that a team from Quebec, especially a legend like this that has transcended sports itself, should be owned by someone from WHERE THE TEAM ORIGINATES!!! The commissioner, unless he has a hidden agenda should step in and make sure this happens...NOT...when a great individual such as Jim Balsilie wants to bail out a yank team and move it to Canada where it belongs, the commissioner should make sure that happens....LOOK AT WHAT THAT PIP SQUEAK IS DOING INSTEAD!! I live in a world of globalized, whack jobs...where pride is replaced with cash and yank rule.

After reading your diatribe I believe I've seen you on TV before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIlKiRPSNGA

What do you guys think is the going rate for guys like Hossa, Havlat, Gaborik, Jay Bo,etc ....considering Franzen took less than 4 mill per season and Krejci signed or 3.75. There are some good cases to be made that we could inf act sign 2 of Tanguay, Koivu, Komi and Kovy for 4 million bucks using these guys as measuiring sticks. If Krejci gets 3.75 what does Pleks get? You know one gm will drive the price way up but seriously...the signings of late have been fairly modest......Franzen is nearly in the same league as the bigger boys now.....Krejci was a point epr gamer...none of our big free agents are in the same league as those guys statistically anymore and then you consider age, economy, shrinking cap,etc...man the nearer this gets the stranger it gets.....the Sedins might go for 11 combined in a 2 or 3 year deal in case big bucks return in the not so distant future. Franzen, however hung himself with his contract....3 years down the road he'll still be making 4 million....how do the red wings do it? are they payin these guys under the table? Free octopus for life? Wouldn't that make the steroid scandal seem small lol. So imagine this Komi 6 million....Zetterberg 6 million......if zetterberg is a 6 million dollar man than havlat is not.....then gaborik is not....then the sedins are a big amybe....hossa is about the same or only slightly more......by this logic Now I know that the wings have some sort of blackmailing technique but still....are the numbers we have been tossing around crazy?

likehoy's picture
hossa is 7-8 million on the open market, can score 30-40goals per season, doesn't get pushed around, and is fiendish on the backcheck havlat is 5million per season...scores a point per game, raises his game in the playoffs could go for 6 but he's injured too often gaborik would be 6 million per season...a goal scorer of his type is rare...he can pot 40-50 goals a year with the low scoring minnesota wild...under the right circumstances, for example on joe thornton or jason spezza's wing...he could be a 50-60 goal scorer. he averaged 70 games a season before last season where he played only 17 (but managed 13g...more than higgins) komo 4 million...robin regehr makes 4.02 million and he's the exact same as komo...highest paid shut down dman is hannan at 4.5m. jay mckee, the 2nd goalie, makes 4million plekanec a cool 3million...krejci has only one good season so far...and got 3.75 cause he was lucky enough for it to be his contract year, if pleks' contract year was last year...he'd be making the same...plekanec is a goal scoring centreman with over 20+ goals 3 seasons straight...that's a rarity in habstown...we could be inclined to want to give him less cause he had a terrible season..but after 4 years...plekanec has proven himself in the NHL and michael ryder proves that a crap contract year means squat if the team believes in you - Pride + Envy = Second Place

24 Cups's picture
likehoy - back in the fall, it was rumoured that Gaborik was offered $8M a year for 8 years by Minnesota. He didn't take it because he had issues with Lemaire. LOL Now!

likehoy's picture
incredible...8 million for gaborik? he's good but he's no kovalchuk! - Pride + Envy = Second Place

A. Berke's picture
yes Rob, IMO too some of the numbers are crazy. 6+ mil should be considered for a handful of elite players and no one, repeat no one should be signed for more than 7 mil per. e.g. if Komi wants 6 mil, in my book he walks because he's not worth more than 2-2.5 (just for some average hitting and shot blocking). Same for Gaborik, he's more than half the time is injured, so where is the value? He also is about 2-2.5 per max. Pleks about 1.5 - 2 mil. Like you say, considering their age bracket, koivu and Kovy should cost a total of about 5 mil. Folks, what we're talking are millions of dollars and not sand pebbles. 3.75 or 4 mil per for several years is a damn good guaranteed income. BTW, most players will probably take less to sign w/wings simply because of closeness to a cup. Cheers, Ali B.

Dintrox's picture
In a lot of ways I miss performance based bonuses for veterans. With that system you could sign a guy with injury problems like Gaborik with a bonus attached to games played. Now, Sure you can put him on IR and perhaps sign someone to fill his shoes when he is out ,but you run into all sorts of cap problems when you reactivate him. There are many questionable contracts that have been signed in the last few years. I think many GMs were thinking there was no end to revenue growth. Redden, Briere, Gomez, Naslund (until he retired, Vinnie have bloated contracts.

mrhabby's picture
ali. while i agree with ur logic. GMS will always pay a higher price. theres no way Gaborik will play for 2-2.5m no way it will not happen.he has tons of potential depsite injuries and is good for a point a game or more. komo..still young much upside and even though injured he still is a shut down guy. he wll get 5-7mrange..some fool will pay it. JBO is cream of the crop.likely 6-8m range...look what redden made last year with rangers. jbo is better player. Kovy/Saku will just not play for those amounts that u mentioned. they would be taken a 50% hit....non starter. like i said GMS will pay the price.

A. Berke's picture
Sorry double post! Cheers, Ali B.

mrhabby's picture
franzen took less because its the wings and he is going to win a cup. sedins will want 6-7m easy. they played for 5.5 last year. why would they take the same. Gaborik.6-7m range short term deal given his injuries and on/off play. jbo..could command 7-8m range. puck moving defenceman are in shortage. Hossa. he could take a discount because its just the wings and he could win another cup next year 5-6m range. havlat i have no idea. Komo..somebody will over pay and he will jump at 5-7m. I could see him in LAFF , NYI jersey. Could you see him in a LAFF jersey.

likehoy's picture
what if nobody overpays komo? maybe we're rating him too high remember when souray waited out to be overpaid...but only got slightly less than markov in the open market? it does happen where teams do realize that a player is not worth it. i think it's pretty obvious to most teams that you don't want to lock up 5 million with a player that's not going to score the winning goal of the stanley cup playoffs - Pride + Envy = Second Place

HardHabits's picture
Souray for all his size, grit and scoring panache was a major and defensive liability while a Hab. Streit was the player they should've kept.

What?

this is an interesting site that for some reason I don't remember coming across....seems the guy has adjusted league totals for stats as some hits, takeaways, etc aren't the same in some places as others....different. http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/

24 Cups's picture
Rob - what's interesting is that both Sedin Sisters are in the top 20 player rankings (5th & 9th). The only Hab is Markov who is listed as #19 for defensemen.

Remember all of those painful minutes in our end and in the neutral zone where we couldn't seem to take the puck from the opposition...or so it seemed......seems everything was exactly how it seemed.....one Hab in the top 100 in the league in takeaways???? Wow.....we need someone who can take the damn puck away from someone cause that is a downright scary statistic. http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/200809/playertakeaway.php

lol....he also has dennis wideman listed as the top dman in the rankings based on whatever his formula is......i just thought it was a nice idea "adjusted total"....check out how many of the Rangers hits he says weren't hits. Last year the Sedins had a pretty fine season Steve.....I have nothing against them except that they are a them.....it is too bad you can't have one or the other. Oddly enough Markov isn't in his top 10 d man player rankings.

24 Cups's picture
You're right, the Sedins aren't as bad as everyone thinks but it sure is fun to pick on them. They had a pretty decent playoff and who knows what Vancouver might have done if Luongo hadn't crapped the bed in game 6. They will certainly be the most interesting signing in the history of the cap. A team will have to commit around 12M to 14M a year to sign them. That's 1/4 of your entire budget on two guys who really aren't stars but rather just very good players. Then there's the issue of term. Is there anyone interested in these two guys besides Vancouver, Toronto, and LA? Could you not try and lowball them seeing as they want to play together? I'm betting that they'll stay in Vancouver.

mrhabby's picture
they were playing for a discount in vancouver for 5.5m. i kind of think they want 6.5-7m range and somebody will give it to them.there ist choice would be to stay in canuck land.

The lowball thing is ripe for the trying.....given the cap concerns, the two for 1, the need to be packaged...I'm not so sure they stay in Vancouver myself.....I think for the sake of the Canucks and Luongo they should but they have some cash to spend and have an opportunity to do some serious bidding.....Demitra likely means Gaborik wouild be interested and JayBo apparently wants somwhere out west as does Healtey......gonna be a wild few weeks once it gets rolling.

A. Berke's picture
I don't think Vancouver has the cap space this year (and much less next one) to sign all these players. However, Sedins have repeatedly said that they prefer to stay in Van city because they like it here. As long as canucks management doesn't change their mind, IMO Sedins may even accept a little bit of lowball numbers from 'nucks. To posters calling them "sisters", I say you are wrong, simply put, they give hits as much as any finesse/scoring offensive player will do (after all you can not injure/hurt yourself just because you want to overachieve in giving hits, that's the job of D-men or support forwards) and each year they score at least in the 80's (that's 160/170+ pts for the team) and the funny thing is their total points are usually identical. At about 6 or 6.5 mil per, they are welcome to my team. Ali B.

I meant going after 2 of those guys to replace them

crabvader's picture
Who cares if Allaire is goalie coach in Laff-land. If we seriously need to depend on a goalie coach for us to win, there is something immensely wrong with us. Besides as some pointed out, Allaire's style kind of contrasts to the way Price should play. All we need is a coach capable of teaching Price to remain calm and gain confidence. Price is already one of the best skill-wise so why Allaire? There are plenty of goalie coaches who could work on Carey's confidence, I'm sure.

I think instead of Beauchemin I'd like Seidenberg.

JasonM's picture
They two aren't even in the same league. Beauchemin can be a top 2 d-man on some teams but Seidenberg would generally fill out as a 5th or 6th defenseman with some powerplay presence on the 2nd line. Dennis plays small and loses a lot of battles in the corners. He provides less of an offensive output and needs to become better defensively. Beauchemin has a rough season (injuries) and should come at a good cost to potential value. One of the heavyiest shots in the league and plays big. Can contribute on the PP. Is able to move the puck around efficiently. If we can land Beauchemin for a 3 year deal for about 13M with the first year being at 5M and the other being less, then we need to sign this player, BADLY. My dream is Bowmeester and Beauchemin. Bob, please make it happen!!! :)

mrhabby's picture
Beauchemin will not go anywhere if Niedermayer retires..right??

Seidenberg 5th or 6th d? plays small? Are we talking about the same guy here? Carolina Seidenberg ..... hits and plays a similar game to Kronwall.....probably about the most comparable guy I can think of to Seidenberg is Kronwall. Beauchemin has always had the luxury of playing along side hall of famers too you must consider. Seidenberg plays with who? I like Beauchemin don't get me wrong but I think given the choice and given that I think Seidenberg is younger and in his prime I'd go with him. http://www.canescountry.com/2009/6/9/903299/canes-country-exit-analysis-... (I think Seidenberg will also be cheaper) he is apparently injury prone and I wasn;'t aware of that but.....the things you said about him are not at all in tune with what I have seen of him and I swear I typed in Dennis seidenberg career stats scouting report and this was the first thing I saw. Let's sign them both.

JasonM's picture
I'm all for signing them both as well. Let the younglings grow in Hamilton.

crabvader's picture
Yeah, but Beauchemin can let it rip.

I think instead of Beauchemin I'd like Seidenberg.

Poll of the day: Does P.K. Subban make the team this year or does he play in Hamilton? What would you prefer? Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

JasonM's picture
Follow what Detroit does and develop your talent before bringing them up. They'll be in the organization much longer and won't hit UFA till they should and will play a more sound game being developed slowly instead of impeding their progress by quickly and ineffiently patching holes. In the long run, they'll become a better player and cost the team far less. So my answer is, despite how much I like Subban, 2 years in Hamilton. Let him be the best he can be.

Bill H's picture
I'd prefer that PK score 25 goals with the Habs and play responsible defense at the same time. But it ain't going to happen. He's not ready. Lots of upside to this kid. Great attitude. He'll play most if not all of the season in Hamilton. Gainey will have to trade or sign a UFA to fill the gap until our prospects mature. I don't know why people are pissed with what happened with Emelin. He's just doing what every other player would do in his position. He's unproven on this side of the pond and would likely spend the year in Hamilton if he came over here. Lots of bus travel and not much of a pay check. All he has to do is call up Valentenko and ask him how it went for him. It would have been a nice bonus if he came to try out for the team. But anyone who was counting on him coming was living in Fantasyland.

Bugs's picture
There is definitely going to be a roster spot open for the young defender who wants it the most. Little infectious fire wouldn't hurt the club, I say. If he shows he can play at this level, he's surely my favourite. Peace Out _____________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Earl of Fluppitburg, Baron of Fleenshire County and Knight of the Flannel Republic.

MikeL's picture
I don't think that can be answered until the mess we call our current roster is figured out. The picture will likely be much less foggy in a months time. As far as preference, I'd rather him play at least one year in Hamilton, and then assess the situation again after that.

Well,Gainey may pull another Price & bring up Subban when he is not ready and Damn near ruin him. Every player needs a few years in the AHL. But Builder Bob thinks differently. Maybe the new owners will get rid of Gainey. I hope so...

then they'll re-hire rejean houle and we'll be the league laughing stocks again! leave bob alone he's doing the job and quite well. i'm happy with the job gainey is doing

Habsrule1's picture
Wow, I somewhat agree with the time in the AHL, but there are exceptions. As for your Gainey comment, you must not have been following the team before he got here....! Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

MR HAB's picture
I have been following this team since 1969. Gainey got us to the second round ONCE. Big deal. Gainey has to go.

Habsrule1's picture
All Gainey bashers are the same. Take a look at the team's STATS before Gainey got here. 77 points and 4 out of 5 years no playoffs at all! Take a look at the roster too...and for that matter, take a gander at Hamilton's roster then too. The Calder Cup was a very big DREAM to them back then. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

HardHabits's picture
You make it sound like getting ousted 1st round is worthy of hall of fame recognition. Forget injuries or other lame excuses. I have seen an incremental improvement yes, but as it stand we're years away from a conference final let alone contending for the Cup. Of course that could all change this summer. Don't hold your breath. The way the team is set-up maybe now it's 5 year plan time. The sad part is that Gainey could've picked up some 1st round picks if he had traded at the deadline, but instead opted for a 2 home game playoff payday.

MR HAB's picture
Timmins was responsible for Hamilton by drafting players. Not Gainey...

that may be but the general manager always get the credit....and gainey had enough smarts to hire timmins

Bill J's picture
WOW - Ehm - let me join the others in pointing out something that seems VERY obvious to me at least.... Maybe if it pointed out you will also realize it is quite obvious. 1) Trevor Timmins is the Habs Head Scout, his job is to ensure that prospects are ranked - & the diamonds in the rough are found by the Habs instead of other teams. - a Head Scout typically proposes a list of players ranked for the draft. They hand the List to the GM., along with all the research. 2) Bob Gainey as GM with the consultation of Trevor Timmins & possibly others, decides who gets picked. Not to mention it was Gainey who brought Timmins in - so he certainly gets credit for that as well. ;) THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE.... The Head Scout does NOT have final say.... Think about it!!!!

So, let me get this straight...if something good happens, somebody else is gets the credit, but if something bad happens, it's Gainey's fault ??? Please...can't have it both ways. Gainey is ultimately responsible for the draft...good bad or indifferent. Our team is significantly better than it was before Gainey's arrival and we will continue to get better with our young talent.

Habsrule1's picture
If you think Gainey does not have the final say on draft day, you are sadly mistaken. Scouts are like advisors. They don't make decisions. Gainey has to sign them and live with the decision. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

crabvader's picture
Didn't Bob hire Trevor? I dunno...

crabvader's picture
More like you've been following the team since 1969. Big deal. With what Gainey has to work with, getting the team to 1st place in the East was an accomplishment in itself. The Habs had amazing players up til the late 80's. You think if he had been coaching in the 70's it would have been different? Oh wait, that's right, he was part of the team and was a key to their great success even back then, when he was a player.

MR HAB's picture
Great player YES. Lousy GM & Coach

Bill J's picture
You certainly have no right to judge Bob Gainey. You have no clue what goes on behind the closed doors, how would you feel if people talked about YOUR performance at your job without having a CLUE what you have done ? More important then the fact it makes you a @$$ for making personal comments about things you are NOT knowledgeable about yourself makes you a POOR judge of his Character. Gainey has admitted he is NOT in his comfort zone as a Head Coach, but as a GM he must have felt like it was better HIM as Head Coach as opposed to Carbo (in that moment) and with no desire to just hire the ONLY coaches who are un-employed. He chose to jump in, and TRY to turn the slump around himself. And in the off-season choose a suitable replacement for Head Coach. THAT to me is a valuable GM.. Quit looking at everything from the Negative side of things, consider there MAY have been valid reasons for his choices, or perceived lack of action.

cautiousoptimist's picture
One more season at least... The biggest criticisms of Gainey are that he hasn't been able to attract superstar free agents, and that he hasn't been able to swing blockbuster deals. If he leaves, I'm just not sure that his replacement would do any better in these areas, since a good chunk of the problem has more to do with the city (weather, taxes, language, politics, media, fickle fans, etc.) than the GM does... In fact, I'd wager that the large majority of potential replacements would do worse, as they don't command the universal respect that Gainey does. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. I think the biggest criticism(s) of Gainey, at least mine are: 1) rushing the young players, and not mentoring/supervising them properly 2) going from run-and-gun two seasons ago to duck-and-cover the last 3) snarling at the fans post season rather than owning up to HIS errors 4) not admitting that the team was awful at the trade deadline and that no last minute tweaking was going to do more than temporarily sustain a house-of-cards turn around 5) not trading impending UFAs for draft picks or prospects Nevertheless, I am hoping that he stays on for at least 5 more years.

exactly! Jesus himself would have trouble getting a decent UFA to sign here given all of the reasons cautiousoptimist stated above.

his replacement couldn't be worse.

His predecessor(s) were much worse! The team is still reeling from the crap the previous ones created and Gainey has been doing a lot to right the ship up. So, what are you talking about? If you're a Gainey basher, just admit it and say so but don't try to disguise your dislike for him this way. That's not right nor fair. Ali B.

Exactly.

Another take on Dany Heatley as a hockey player. BTW, I totally agree about the comments concerning Heatley and our last Olympic team. Heatley and Nash were a total bust as neither one of them could score when it counted the most. http://thestar.blogs.com/thespin/

Heatley is just another good hockey player fading in his career.

But he consistently scores over 40 goals a season. Name one player on the Habs roster that can do that.

I bet Kovalev and AK46 could too, if their linemates were Spezza and Alfredsson... 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Mike Boone: "With Gainey at my side, I'd walk into any dark alley in the world."

Heatley was doing that in Atlanta too, buddy. My head hurts.
