GILLETT SELLS TO MOLSONS: report

posted by Dave Stubbs at 13h28 EST on Jun 20

La Presse is reporting on its website that George N. Gillett Jr. has an agreement in principle to sell the Canadiens and the Bell Centre to the Molson family.

Confirmation of the deal is expected to come later today, the report says. The sale, RDS reports, will be in the neighbourhood of $500-plus million, which also includes the lucrative Gillett Entertainment Group.

Brothers Geoff, Andrew and Justin Molson announced late last month that they had placed an offer for the club, which for decades was owned members of the Molson family and the brewery that carries its name. Gillett bought an 80.1-per-cent stake in the team on Jan. 31, 2001, the brewery keeping 19.9 per cent.

Even if the Canadiens weren't confirming the sale late afternoon, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, in Las Vegas, responded favourably to the story.

Molson's Brewery bought the club from a syndicate, led by Peter and Edward Bronfman, for $20 million in 1978. Here's a video of that from the CBC archives (thanks to Robert Lefebvre for the link). Read on below for Molson's history of ownership of the Canadiens, both the family and the brewery:

Molson ownership history of the Canadiens:

• Sept. 24, 1957: Senator Hartland de M. Molson and his brother, Thomas H.P. Molson, buy the Canadiens and the Canadian Arena Co. from Senator Donat Raymond and Canadian Arena Co. vice-president William Northey. Purchase price not disclosed.

• May 15, 1964: Senator Molson and Thomas Molson sell the Canadiens and the Canadian Arena Co. to their cousins, J. David, William A. and Peter B. Molson for approximately $5 million.

• Dec. 30, 1971: Brothers David, William and Peter Molson sell the Canadian Arena Co. and the Canadiens to Placements Rondelle Ltée. for approximately $15 million. This syndicate, whose main shareholders are brothers Peter and Edward Bronfman, will later become Carena Bancorp.

• Aug. 4, 1978: Molson Breweries of Canada Ltd., under the terms of an agreement with Carena Bancorp, acquire the Canadiens and sign a long-term lease on the Forum covering the operation of the team as well as the entertainment division.

• June 22, 1993: Ground-breaking ceremonies are held for the Canadiens' new arena, the Molson Centre.

• March 16, 1996: The Canadiens play their first game in the Molson (later renamed Bell) Centre.

• Dec. 31, 2001: Molson Inc. announce the acquisition of 80.1 per cent of the Canadiens and 100 per cent of the Molson Centre by American businessman George N. Gillett Jr. The deal is valued at $275 million. Molson Inc. retains a 19.9 per cent stake in the hockey team. The transaction is approved by the NHL Board of Governors on June 19, 2001.

Having me on the roster raised the habs value from 200 million to 550 million. Gillett now wants me to suit up for liverpool and drive for his nascar team. go "FULL BREEZER" at fullbreezer.com

Ok people I have got this sorted out for you. The Molson family are people who built and own Canada's largest brewery. As an addition to that, they now have purchased the Habs. So, technically, the beer you buy bring back money to the brewery thus to the Molson family. And since they own the Habs, their money is the Habs' money! Clear?

Ok but if I also buy Molson Coors Stock(Stock Market) do I also own a tiny piece of the Montreal Canadiens?

Dintrox's picture
the bid for george's stake is the family not the company. However, since molson-coors still as far as I know owns a 19.9% stake, if you own shares you do own an itsy bitsy part of the Habs.

But...Question is if I buy Molson Coors stock, do I get to own a piece of the Canadiens?

No, the Molson family bought it.

Molson Family= Molson Coors stock?

Rugger's picture
From what I understand, the Molson Brothers bought the team with their personal $, not the Molson corporate $. However, i think Molson-Coors still owned 20% as minorty partners with Gillett so, yeah, I guess you would have a very small part of 20%.

gainey has to stay

Here's a prediction. Now that Molson has bought back the Habs to keep it in the family so to speak. Quebecor will buy a team from the south and bring them back to Quebec City. They need a platform for their 24-7 planned sports station. They hire Patrick Roy and the fun begins.... again .....

Can Savard and Gainey exist. All reports indicate Savard has invested with the Molson family. it's getting interesting.

I heard from a friends dad that he saw kovalchuck at holt's and he said that kovalchuck told him that he bought out his contract in atlanta and watns to play for the habs. Any truth to this??

Funny story. For a few years now, I've been told that I was the spitting image of Kovalchuk. (personally, I don't see it) Anyway, the other day, I was at Holts, and this goofball kept asking me for my autograph. He wouldn't believe me that I wasn't him! He was getting upset too! So finally, I signed it because I didn't want to start a row, and the goofball asks me if I would ever consider playing for the Boys. I said "Sure, I'll just buy myself out of my contract and head on up!" He smiled and left and I recovered some peace. Thank GOD Quebecor didn't get their hands on the Habs. Thank you George, you were a great owner and I'm very pleased you sold to the Molsons who will treat the team, and it's fans with honesty and openness, which we would all like to see. This just made my weekend ;-)

Another smart (marketing) move by The Canadiens with the draft set for next week they can publicly thank the Gillette Family for their years of service/ownership as well as introducing The Molson Family back to the fold with all of The NHL in town for the big show at the start of the draft......

Puck Bard's picture
Yup. I'm looking forward to the next two weeks. Should be interesting.

you know what they say: the more things change, the more they stay the same! so I guess they'll now change the name of the venue, back to The Molson Centre! so now that we have new owners, please Mr. Molson fire Gainey, Gauthier and Boivin. They have brought this franchise to new lows in terms of respect and embarrassment. bye bye Gainey! you're toast!

"They have brought this franchise to new lows in terms of respect and embarrassment." You must be doing drugs. What is your problem? I do agree about Boivin cause I think he's a moron but Gainey? Come on, the guy came here when we had NOTHING. He basically set up a good foundation to work with since the Rejean Houle administration brought this team to the ground. The Habs are a very respected team and any sullying of that respect was due to the PLAYERS not the staff. Players who party and stuff like that. You can't hold them by the hand all the time, they are adults. Measures were taken and Gainey has since re-stabilized the situation. Before Gainey, how packed was the venue here in Montreal? Since Gainey, it sells out almost all of the time. And try not to give me any comparisons to the Hawks or the Pens or anything like that. When was the last time we had 1st overall picks? Houle wasted all of them or traded them all away for hotel reservations. Gainey had zilch. The guy loses his daughter during his re-building phase and still keeps his composure with the team. It takes a strong person to be able to work through something like that. He's given his hard work 100% to the Habs both as a player and as a GM. He deserves respect from snotty little punks like you who obviously have no friggin clue what they're yammering about.

what exactly has Gainey done? and BTW the Bell centre has ALWAYS been sold out, crappy team or not! let's see what Gainey did. last trade deadline day, nothing. year before trade deadline day, nothing. year before, same story. star UFA's signed? none. missed playoffs 3 of last 5 years. nice job Bob. worst D in the NHL. let's Souray, Streit , Komisarek walk without getting anything in return. Zero offence. yup, great job Bob! your 5 year plan is working to perfection. 5 years later you've made this team the joke of the NHL!

crabvader's picture
Lol, you are completely moronic. I just said what he accomplished before. Do you not know how to read? His team made 1st in the East last year. Tons of potential coming up and as was mentioned in another post, he is preparing this team for a great future. Fact is, I don't even want to go into it and waste more time writing to you because you clearly don't read nor understand anything about hockey. You're a waste of everyone's time on this board. Get the hell outta here.

G-Man's picture
Boivin is no moron. Whom do you think is responsible for the success of Gillett Entertainment Group? However, the rest of your post is bang on. __________________________________________________________________________________ Beliveau is the best that ever was.

crabvader's picture
Moron in the sense that he is another elitist Quebecer who, if he had his way, would have an all-French-Canadian team. We live in Canada, regardless of what PQ supporters say. There is no room for small-minded people in this Country (even though there's pleeeeenty of geographic room left).

G-Man's picture
Habs Cup winning teams have always had a large French Canadian contingent. Boivin is simply being nostalgic. Other NHL teams mine Quebec for players, yet the Habs don't seem to (they should). Maxime Talbot and others like him (3rd and 4th liners)are the character players the Habs need for grit. They play for the pride of being a Canadien, as well as the pay cheque. Stars (like Vinny) are a bonus. __________________________________________________________________________________ Beliveau is the best that ever was.

crabvader's picture
Well, him being nostalgic is highly debatable. I mean, unless you're sleeping with the man. I know I'm not. Most people whine that our team is not Canadian enough even more that it is not Quebecois enough. Who cares? As far as I'm concerned, talent is oozing from plenty of countries these days. Why do we need players to speak french? Why do french players get criticized less than others? Latendresse should be the joke of this team! He barely uses his size and can't skate for his life! Yet all I've been hearing is how Kovalev is a cancer or how Koivu is a bad captain or how Price is a fluke. Quebec is still a very disconnected province. No one wants to take away our culture or assimilate us anymore. The Brits aren't in control! When politics carry on to hockey, it worsens the game for everyone. Perfect example: The Quebec Nordiques. Amazing rivalry, but politics ran that team outta town.

I agree that Montreal is the best city because of your statements and has the most compelling team because of it. I am saying I don't want elitist French Canadians getting full of themselves acting like we do not need anyone but Quebec players. The Nordiques had that problem. We shouldn't. No French captain? No problem! As long as we win and play well, I don't care! When you start skipping on guys in drafts because the media and fans are going to burn your house down in your sleep, THEN you know there is a problem.

Good post. The Habs were an embaressement pre-Gainey thanks to Rejean Houle trading away a franchise goalie for 3 journey man players and Mario Tremblay. Gainey has done a good job turning this ship around.

No doubt that Gainey knows Hockey. We do not always see the big pic as fans. Every one was on here blasting him for making moves then blasting him for not. Gainey is building a great franchise for years to come. And I supose if he doesnt blow his cap room in the off season every one will be on here crying again that they know better. These young players need a chance at some point and building from with in will build depth in the organization. In Gainey we trust

they're all 4th liners.
