About
Dave Stubbs has been a sportswriter since 1976, which was roughly a decade after he wore the first of many holes through the knees of his jeans playing nets in road hockey (using a modified butterfly popularized by Hall of Famer Glenn Hall). He still has the welts to show on his shins from that rotten, frozen orange ball.
Stubbs kept thick hockey scrapbooks filled with game summaries and Gazette and Montreal Star stories, collected dozens of Bee Hive Corn Syrup photos and put a fortune of hockey cards through the spokes of his bikes. First book ever owned: Scrubs On Skates, the classic by Scott Young (Neil's dad).
Stubbs's fantasy is to travel back in time to the 1950s and watch the great Canadiens dynasty that won five consecutive Stanley Cups. Or a decade earlier, to watch Elmer Lach centre Rocket Richard and Toe Blake on the fearsome Punch Line. Or at least to get Rogie Vachon into the Hockey Hall of Fame – where he belongs.

So funny Habsrule1 didn't even pass a comment on this thread after he claimed that the habs would lock up the Sedins for 5.5 mil/yr...He thought I was crazy for thinking otherwise...funny how the world works!
Knowing is Half the Battle...
See, I don't know why no one else sees this.
Our most efficient and effective line, that for some reason got put together so late in the season, was clearly the most productive. Sign all three back and keep the TKK line going. And to work with whatever we have left (other signings and trades not considered), stick Gomez on the 2nd with Akost.
Try to AT LEAST fight to keep our best line of last season.
That is obviously the most logical move any GM in this universe would do; to resign its best line if they, unfortunately, all expire the same year.
We are the next New Jersey Devils. Lol.
Is Eklund reading HI/O or something? His rumours are what people are mentionning for fun lol. (Gionta)
So is this Kovalev signing 8.8mil a year or 4.4?
4.4
Thank God.
Any other source than Team 990?
I don't care what anyone says, I want Gaborik. You're talking about a guy who was on-par with Kovalchuk in that period of time. He still is, if he is healthy. Another thing, though, is he parks his *** in front of the net and makes space to score goals, whether they are sniped, passed or rebounds. He is also a tremendous player. Lots of speculation as to if he was really injured last year or he just didn't like Minny anymore. I'd take a chance on him because he IS a superstar. It would be better to sign him over a consolation prize.
Bob will sign the best 3 players available.
Who are these 3 talented players you continue to assure Gomez and Bob are going to bring to the team.
Captain Kovalev!
Kovalev $8.8M for 2 years. Yikes.
Yikes? He got less and wants to stay here in Montreal. He got his retirement package in place.
"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"
..no way could you give 2-3m per he would be gone for sure.
.... 4.4 per is great. 8.8 per is too much.
$4.4M per year. I don't think that is unreasonable at all.
Source?
That's a lot of coin.
this is getting worse and worse...i really hope Gainey can salvage something out of this day
go habs go!
Antropov looking for $5mil/season? Is he crazy?!
he played for the leafs what do you expect.
Touche.
Team 990 says Kovy signed for 2 years. They are trying to get a second source to confirm. Oops. 75 beat me to it.
F A N T A S T I C !
"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"
the new captain folks...there ya go.
For some reason, Kovalev plays like a beast when he's got the "C" on. Not only that, but the team usually performs better aswell. We know Kovalev didn't undermine Koivu's captaincy. But he's much more vocal when he has that "C" on his shirt.
Actually Kovy was at his best playing alongside Koivu and Tanguay. None of those guys are "A" level UFA's, but put 'em all together...
See, I don't know why no one else sees this.

i would like to see more consistency night and night out thats all not much to ask for.
Looking at the cap situation as well, we have both of our goalies coming up next year, and only 1 million coming off the books (metropolit)
We will either have to leave some space, or trade something we take on away down the stretch to make space for the tenders.
maybe Scott Gomez.
TEAM 990 reporting kovalev has signed a two-year stint with the habs

Taylor Hall on the 2010-2011 roster
Should we all jump over to Boone's Blog?
100 years for this...
What a joke. Could someone please wake Gainey up and tell him he is fired. Since when is a 50 point guy and elite player. I hope there are some good draft choices in the next few years cause I have feeling we will have some high picks to screw up.
The players said it best
Higgins: It is a dream come true.
Gomez: It is kind of sad.
Patrick Elias Paul Karyia and Jerome Iginla ALL had multiple seasons in the 60's and 70's
AND BEST OF ALL
MIKE MODANO made 9 million in 03/04 and had a total of 44 points in 76 games....
Since when is a 40 point guy an elite player?????????
Actually Gomez is a career .82 point per game player. Based on an 82 game schedule, that is an average 67 points per. Add to that, he skates like the wind and is defensively responsible ( a career + player).
I know the cap hit is high, but that for a 3rd liner and a 1st round pick is not that bad.
Hey man, the 401 is that way, go join the rest of the Laugh fans.
------------------------ Vive La Sainte-Flanelle!
who do you guys think the habs are signing today?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taylor Hall on the 2010-2011 roster
oleg petrov, lyle odelien and paul dipietro
Dandy, Breezeby, Kosto and Alain Heroux.
breeze , richer, vinny...damphouse.
So, Ohlund signed fro $3.5M per year. Now, more than ever, anyone who gives Komo more than $3.5 is nuts.
With Jay Bo at $6.6M and Ohlund at $3.5M, I say Komo is fair at $3M per.
I would have been willing to give Ohlund more than 3.5m....
I guess it's Beauchemin or bust, now.
Ohlund for 3.5 for 7 years on a declining cap hit is a great deal for TB.
Tangay - Gomez - Gionta
AK - Plek - Kovy
Max pac/SK - Lapierre - Latendresse
Stew - Metro - Laraque
Chips / D'ag
?
If the team signs Gionta I am going to puke my guts out. Another midget winger, for the last time, that is the last last last thing we need.
Markov-Gorges
Hammerlik-Beauchemin
Mara-Weber
I think we'd be looking pretty good.
Mara's name has jumpped out at me too, I like him.
I've been talking this guy up to anybody that will listen for like 3 months. Love what he brings and the price he brings it at.
At this point, if Sundin were to sign here, how would you guys feel about that? I wouldn't know.
the twins are not here so not going to happen.
As long as we overpay him.
Lol.
I don't wanna think about it.
For 3-4 mil? I don't like the guy, personally. The thing is, he looked pretty bad when he started up with Van, but he looked like he was slowly getting his stride back. I'd think that he would have to go through training camp and he would come back as his regular self. Again, though, shitty character.
It didn't see him do anything last year. And I hate that stupid grin on his face whenever he looks up at the jumbotron.
He does look like a pre-mature cloning experiment gone wrong... In his defense about not improving, I doubt you watched to much of him.
I watched every late night game that was broadcasting on our end. He looked a lot slower. How old is he now?
67.
brian gionta might be a decent winger with gomez he had 40 goals playing with gomez just a few years back. and is a right shot
and he wouldn't cost as much as the others being discussed. Good idea in my mind, especially if he could play LW
I'd like Bertuzzi to sign in TO. Let Laraque pummel that bastard's face in.
this was a trade of DESPERATION. When you're desperate, and every GM in the league knows you are, you always lose. Gainey has no concept how to be GM. He's only good at giving away players for nothing, and overpaying for everything. thanks Bob for mortgaging our future, and putting the habs into last place..
rumours has it Hossa might end up in CHi-town.
Hossa closing in on Hawks?
Scot N loooking at Van
ohlund in TB? wow...useless.
- Pride + Envy = Second Place
you have to wonder where all the money will be coming from????
"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be it yours to hold high."
Good deal for tampa I think.
Ohlund to Tampa!
McGuire says the Habs could be chasing Gaborik. I'd much rather see Hossa here.
Why have we not heard of any signings today? There's no way Bob was unable to sign anyone....we'd have a roster of like 10 guys!
I'm getting real nervous.
signings started 23 minutes ago.
I'm referring to our (now) UFAs.
Aw, I think Gainey wants to see who he can pick up before signing his on players. Crazy, I know.
Happy Canada Day! :D
Ohlund signs in Tampa
Anyone else out there have NO CLUE what the hell Bob is gonna do today?
I might even be scared!
E.
I'm with you. Really, really nervous over here.
Fingers crossed!
E.
Let's take Redden's contract off Sather's hands too.
Roszival or Redden, which contract can we help out with more? How about both?

Thank you, that Leafs logo was giving me heartburn..
------------------------ Vive La Sainte-Flanelle!
thank you
Thank you!
agreed, maybe add beauchemin!!
"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be it yours to hold high."
one last thing, i saw trevor timmins outside le crystal hotel in montreal (i was waiting for zidane to come out of the hotel, yes i am a groupie!).....so i asked him who we would sign on wednesday....he smiled and said wait and see haha......honestly........i believe that hossa is coming to montreal....i think jacques martin will bring him to monreal, not bob!
I was with Zidane. It was me, Timmins, Hossa, and Zidane. And we all were laughing at the Gomez trade. Then Zidane head-butt the waiter so we had to leave.
E.
hahahaa!
