What's the going price for a goon?

posted by Pat Hickey at 12h20 EST on Jul 1

When the Canadiens were looking for a goon – sorry, a tough character guy – laast summer, they signed Georges Laraque to a two-year deal at $1.5 million per annum.

The Leafs have signed Colton Orr to a four-year deal averaging $1 million a season. Orr had 1 goal and four assists in 82 games and was minus-15. But Toronto was most interested in his 193 penalty minutes and his 18 fights, twice as many as Laraque. Then again, Orr was healthy for the entire season.

Brashear signed with the Rags after losing Orr to Toronto. (2.8mil for 2 years). Um...

Bill H's picture

TSN: Beauchemin wants $4.5 for 4 years.

mrhabby's picture

do it for christ sake gainey.

Timo's picture

Give it to him. Far better option than Komi.

I disagree, I'd much rather have Komi for $5 million then Beauchemin for $4.5 million.

Corporate's picture

Seriously??? Wow... Beauchemin all the way. He can play on his own. Komi without Markov was marginally better than Gorges, except he blocked more shots,

Beauchemin was playing with 2 hall-of-fame defenseman, on a much stronger team.

Bill H's picture

TSN: Kovalev is still in negotiation with a number of teams.  He is not signed with Canadiens yet.

crabvader's picture

I'm scratching my head at $5mil for a 40-goal scorer... Hossa must really be desperate.

crabvader's picture

12-years for Hossa? What about all their defensemen and guys like Kane, Versteeg and Toews?!?!

RetroMikey's picture

They can keep Hossa in the Windy City.

He may take Chicago to the Cup final but he's unlucky in winning the big one.

2 stikes in Pittsburgh and Detroit, will Chicago be the third?

crabvader's picture

Yeah, and then they're gonna be stuck with the HUGE problem of keeping all their young stars.

NightRyder's picture

Hossa to the Hawks.

Corporate's picture

Any news on Tanguay and Kovu?

"But Toronto was most interested in his 193 penalty minutes and his 18 fights, twice as many as Laraque. Then again, Orr was healthy for the entire season"-I wish there was a stat for "actual fight to asked to fight" ratio. Orr may have had twice as many fights but how many fights did bgl ask for and was declined. I figure the "hell no's" from lucic alone would have made this stat alot closer.

agreed. the respect factor kicks in big time, and Georges is the clear winner. let's see who you're rooting for when the Leafs play the Habs next season :) that should give you a good feel for it.

are people seriously saying they'd take Colton Orr on their team over Georges fricking Laraque? come on. stop being cynics over everything Hab-related.

crabvader's picture

LOL. No one is afraid to fight Orr, haha.

Number31's picture

BOUILLON kicked his arse. And he doesn't even reach it.

Robert L's picture

According to CKAC, the Canadiens have reached a deal with Alex Kovalev for two years at 4.5M.

not true YET!

geo_habsgo's picture

Cammalleri is a good player but to sign another small center to the team is just overkill. I don't know I'm really freaking out now because I see this team losing almost all depth that it once may have had.

he is a winger...Probably the best one left since, Gaborik and Havlat are always injured and Hossa just signed in Chicago!

crabvader's picture

Like I said, size at center is not everything. Look at Detroit and Boston...Where are their big centers? Winning faceoffs is key and good positionning. I would choose that over size any day. Besides, there are 4 more positions on the ice that can fill the size void.

geo_habsgo's picture

I see your point. The only thing is that I feel like one of the only reasons BGL got signed was to compensate for our lack of size and grit. An abundance of small players makes opponents eager to throw themselves at us which I think was the source of a lot of injuries last season.  But I do agree with what you say in principle.

crabvader's picture

I agree with that. We need players who can hold their own aswell.

crabvader's picture

TSN saying Hossa in Chicago is a done deal.

RetroMikey's picture

I don;t believe Hossa was ever in our plans to sign him after what happened last year.

We still need a big CMan.

"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"

Also, Kovalev is confirmed 2 years total 8.75 Mill...NICE SIGN, good price almost makes up for over paying Gomez

Kovalev is NOT signed yet according to Lebrune. Conflicting reports

coachdoug's picture

And he will get the C I bet...this makes up for the Gomez trade if it's true...

Go Habs Go!

crabvader's picture

Damn straight, good deal.

HardHabits's picture

Confirmed where? If so that's very good news!

NHL LIVE....they just corrected themselves...OPPS sorry boys....Kovalev's agent just said "he (Kovalev) is on the market and we are looking at all offers"

OMG NO, we need Kovalev!

SmartDog's picture

Been driving for two days and have been DYING to post.

This Gomez deal is total desperation. It's a GREAT deal for the Rangers.  For the Habs there are so many ways this can go wrong it's not funny.  Gomez had ONE great year.  And a lot of mediocre years.  He's a small center - we have a BUNCH of those... he had a horrible year - worse than some of our guys.  And we take on over SEVEN  million per year for FIVE years.  We give up a strong prospect (and a  first rounder) and Higgins who's  a bargain and last year was party-boy under the totally blind-in-both-eyes Carbo.  Mark my words after partying on the Habs dime, Higgy will get his act back together for the Rangers.  they guy has more skill - probably as much as Gomez.

In Bob we SUCK!!!!!!!  I've lost all faith. Hope Bob gets canned when this deal bites him in the ass. No, make that hope he gets canned TOMORROW so someone else can come in and fix his many messes.

~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

deuce6's picture

NYR traded their #1 center for a 3rd liner..

HardHabits's picture

Let me bring you up to speed:

8 million is a lot but we have cap space

Gomez > Higgins

Gomez is > or = Higgins + McDonagh

Martin + Gomez = good season for Gomez

Kovalev is signed

more to come....

SmartDog's picture

Sorry.  I was thinking we didn't have money to throw away for the next FIVE years.  I stand totally corrected. You definitely have a way better grasp of economics.

~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Definitely agree Smart Dog. Everyone was ripping Sather for years for being a terrible GM and giving out insane contracts. Well guess what? He didn't have to give up any players to sign those guys. Gainey had to give up a roster player, and prospects (one of them with real promise) to be able to take on one of those "insane" contracts that Sather gave out. Gainey has lost it...please can him.

deuce6's picture

Wrong..He gave up one of his best players for a 3rd line damaged goods..

crabvader's picture

We had this conversation for hours yesterday... It's getting very redundant now.

Yeah...it is going to be very redundant to talk about how bad the habs are for the next few years to isn't it?

Let's just say Michael Cammalleri is a family friend, and he is in talks with Montreal Canadiens as we speak for a multiple year deal.....Unfortunately there are many teams intrested..What do you guys think?

crabvader's picture

I'd say is he REALLY a family friend? :l

LOL, you don't need to believe me I could care less...All I’m saying is that there is talks in the works between Canadiens and Cammalleri,

crabvader's picture

I'm asking if it was true, I wasn't saying I didn't believe you. For all I know you could just have been proposing a scenario. Don't take it like that, lol.

Let me get this straight, so far Burke's moves with the Make Beliefs has been aquiring Brad May and Colton Orr...hmmm. What a hockey genius this guy is, there is no stopping them now, plan the parade route down Yonge street...

deuce6's picture

Another punching bag for Big Georges..

Instant Karma's picture

let's hope bgl is preparing himself this off season and will be ready to go a full season

terrific signing. just makes TO tougher to play. too bad habs don't have a tough guy. Laraque was a horrible signing. Gainey overpaid, AS USUAL, for a underperforming player, AS USUAL. same like the GOMEZ signing. 8 mil for 16 goal scorer. Gainey could have gotten ANTROPOV for NOTHING. he's bigger, scores more and you don't have to give up a single player to get him.

deuce6's picture

Antropov better than Gomez..You serious?

YES! check the stats of each player from last year. and check the 16 goals, 2 YEARS IN A ROW FTOM GOMEZ. Latalentless scored 16 goals 2 years in a row. and how much does he make? about 600,000?

deuce6's picture

Yea, and we all know you only play in one area of the rink...Who is the better skater? Who is the better play maker? Who is the better PKer? Does Antropov make players around him that much better than Gomez does?

Antropov has never hit the 80 point plateau? Better yet, Gomez's worst season is better than Antopov's best...

Try again..Watch the player, not the stats..

I would take Antropov ANYDAY over Gomez! AND HE DOESN'T COST 8 MILLION!

geo_habsgo's picture

BGL will be our first line star player this year..just wait and see :p

crabvader's picture

75pts in 10gp

boy from school's picture

pretty sure it was a three year deal for big georges, no?

crabvader's picture

Colton Orr isn't worth half the money he's making.

TPlow's picture

That's great for the Habs and any opposition team - takes up roster space that could have been used for a talented player. Sign on, Burkie!

Ian_Habs4life's picture

they should honestly just get rid of him he has not been doing anything ... but then again maybe he will get to play this year and actually fight someone
