Habs sign D Spacek

posted by Kevin Mio at 15h54 EST on Jul 1

The Canadiens have signed defenceman Jaroslav Spaceck to a three-year, $11.5 million deal.

The 35-year-old Czech has spent the last three seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and had 45 points (eight goals, 37 assists) in 80 games with the Sabres last season.

More details to come.

This is an excellent signing. The price was right for a 40 point d-man with a consistent plus rating. He is NOT old for a defenceman and has the ability to play significant minutes alongside either Markov or Hammer. He could conceivably mentor PK or Webber if necessary.

If the habs picked up Hal Gill we are set on the blueline for another two years.

Can you say 'Bad to Worse'?

Another undersized defenseman, can't play on the top pair - both because he's not good enough and he plays the wrong side to play with Markov - and another overpay.

Is this all a plan to tank for the #1 pick next year?

Overpaid and not that good...  We still have NOT addressed our scoring issues, when was the last time we had someone score 40-50 goals?

I like it.

Good trade, not exceptional but it'll do with the 98% possible loss of Komo. He'll play well with Schneider (if we keep him). All we need now is bringing back Koivu, Kovy, Lang, Schneider, and Tanguay. I could care less about the others. Then I'll be satisfied.

Well he's experienced and cheap lol!  Spacek is hit and niss.  One year he's great, and one year he's crap.  I'm betting he's a momma's boy, so don't upset him.  Overall, good signing.

this probably means no beauchemin. sigh.

not to be negative but plan A never seems to happen for the canadiens. it is what it is.

but this is not a bad signing at all.

Plan A rarely happens for 29 of the 30 teams on any given day. the Lecavalier-type pool is a small, pretty exclusive one. we did well today.

Last year our biggest problem was puck procession. The defense dumped the puck out and we gave up 40 shots per game. With these two new signings and a new coach, I hope that our team will play more as a team.

Good signing..I like this one a lot..good value..

when the season starts, Spacek will be 36 YEARS OLD! Are the habs playing in the oldtimer's league this year?

Can't please everyone!! This is a pretty good signing. critics will hopefully see this when he is playing on the powerplay! Maybe the complainers want Kostitsyn on the point again???

We still need two top line wingers and kovalev back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

great signing.. he was in my top 5 for possible signings for them. if he stays healthy

I had Koistinen on my list.

THANK YOU!!!!

some of the people here would complain if we signed ovechkin because he is missing a tooth

--- we need a kovalev

Spacek isn't a terrible signing but we still need offence!

Man, some of your guys bitch about anything.

He had 45 points last year...more than Ohlund and just less than Brian Campbell ( and WAY more than Komisarek)  AND he has had 5 straight seasons of + ratings.  He's solid in both ends of the rink.

Pretty damn good if you ask me

I agree that it is a good signing and I also agree that people on this site bitch and whine about everything.

Who cares if he is 35 years old, if he is a good defenceman which he appears to be then thats what matters. Unfortunatly the so-called 'fans' on this site complain about single minute thing.

The same people who complained about Komisarek playing like crap last year are the same ones that Gainey didnt do enough to re-sign him. Same thing with Michael Ryder, he played like garbage his last season in Montreal and people wanted him gone. Then when he leaves they whine that we should enevr have let him go.

amen!

does anyone know if kovy is actually signed ? some people are telling me he is but i dont see any confirmation

nice to know that BOB is doing all he can to make this team an OLD team. signing a 35 year old for 4 mil???? just another clone of Hamrlik. I guess we're just not capable of landing a good YOUNG player. only  the washed up oldtimers come here. ie. Schneider- 40 years old, Lang-38 years old, now another oldtimer.

with Gainey we die.

When you consider that he had just 7 points less than Brian Campbell last year, who made $6.5 million on a much stronger team, I think it's a pretty good deal.

geo_habsgo's picture

This isn't a bad signing he is a good player but 11.5 million? I don't know him that well as a player but is he really worth that cash? And does this effectively erase Koivu and Tanguay from the roster?

Love it...But, some of you crap all over it...lol

Spacek brings a powerful slapper for our PP and now with Gomez and Spacek in the fold, our "possession" game becomes that much better..

Top 2/ top 4 d-man for 3.8 million? Great deal, Bob..

Has he played with Hamrlik before?

JB_15's picture

Better than paying 6 million dollars for komisarek

Ohlund...25pts

Spacek....45pts.  AND pretty decent defensively.

Not a bad signing at all.

rocket09's picture

40 points last year for a defenseman...I am happy with that!

I like this deal not too much money cap friendly hit and an upgrade to our d-men, still need more but a start in the right direction.
