If you can't get a big centre, get two small ones.

That's Plan B for Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey, who has lured Mike Cammalleri from Calgary with a five-year deal worth $30 million.

Cammalleri, who is 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, 39 goals and 43 assists last season while playing left wing and centre. It was a career season for the 27-year-old who had the advantage of playing with Jarome Iginla.

If you add Scott Gomez's height and Cammalleri's  height and divide by two, the results equals Saku Koivu's height and is one inch short of that of Tomas Plekanec.

A good look at Cammalleri's statistics here.

The Canadiens release is below. And go here for audio of Cammalleri's conference call with the media this evening.

Good signing. Why people like this deal is the guy has a scoring touch.  We have ENOUGH passers even before someone I am trying not to think about.. cough-Gomez-cough.

~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Got to give credit where credit is due, nice pick up, well done Bob!

idle's picture

I'm really surprised by this deal.  Not surprised that Gainey made this deal but surprised that the majority of comments about it have been possitive and not the typical "I'm gonna go jump of a building now"

I like the deal.  If we can sign Kovalev and at least Tanguay or Lang we should be in decent shape.  I liked Higgins too and sad to see him go but next year would have been another year of hoping that he would score 20 goals and we already have too many players where we hope they can score points (Plek, A Kost, S Kost) in Gomez and Cammalleri we should not have to hope for point production it should be close to automatic.

Zepphead's picture

Isn't it funny how we keep getting Calgary's garbage?

Hamrlik...

Tanguay...

Cammalleri!

The difference is I like Cammy.

idle's picture

Explain how Tanguay is garbage?

Explain how Cammalleri is garbage?

The Hammer was well down on our list of problems last year.

the Hammer was one of our most consistent player all year. nothing flashy, just good, solid plays.

you still need to explain what makes Tanguay and Cammalleri garbage, btw.

It would be funny to see havlat sign with us due to the elbow that he recieved from cammalleri during the playoffs.....They would probably play on the same line together..

Young, talented and can score ( and a proven scorer as he did it in LA with little support).  A great signing and will be awesome with a playmaker like Gomez.

RudeMood19's picture

i'm done with predicting how the habs will do, it burned me last year

so all ill say is that i hope it works for the best

at the end of the day

carey has to regain his form

boy from school's picture

like or dislike this signing, we get cammalleri from age 27 to 32, which is the prime of his career. can't be unhappy about that.

well said :)

Grabovski- please get a decent haircut!

nfldanchor's picture

Hockey1 Cammalleri was stellar with L.A. when he was there too! He never had Iginla then and was on one of the worst teams in the NHL. Put him on with Kovalev and Gomez and he will be a guranteed 40 goal scorer with 80 plus points. You must be a leafs fan. All you got was Komi who is certainly not an impact player. Looks good on the Leafs! As for toughness we have Laraque -the heavyweight champion of the NHL. Gill and Spacek improve our defense as w ell. Way to go Bob  now sign Kovi and give him the C. I love the way you are aggressively reshaping a winning team. Now get Kovalev signed and we are on our way. Any money left get Gionta either by signing or trade.

habs-13's picture

Looking at what Gainey has done over these last few days, I believe the Habs are in a worse position than they were heading into this off season. Next year's team might be better than last year's, with the new coaching staff and all, but organizationally, we are in a worse position. Now we might face cap problems in a few years with Gomez's contract and we have lost three of our top defensive prospects in McDonagh, Emelin and Valentenko.

Pros:

-Got a legit 80-point player in Mike Cammelleri for a decent price.

-There are reports that Kovalev intends on returning to the Canadiens next year.

-Signed a decent puckmoving defenceman in Spacek, although I'm not too sure about the contract length.

Cons:

-Overpaid for Gomez. Lost a legit 20-goal man and a projected #1 or #1A defenceman for a less than point-per-game undersized center.

-Stuck with Gomez's ridiculous contract, at $7.3 million for the next 5 years.

-Signed a pylon in Hal Gill, although he should bring the physical element that we lost in Komisarek.

We are now short a top defensive prospect, and stuck with a bad contract. While some people see that bringing in Gill and Spacek make OB or Gorges expendable, in reality, they are just stop-gaps and shouldn't interupt the development of our defensive prospects like O'Byrne, Subban, Weber & Fischer.

since1988's picture

Gomez's contract drops down to around 4.5 mill i believe but i am not sure how long into the deal we have to wait for that so the cap issues may not be as bad as you think

Chris's picture

Cap hit is the average salary over the entire deal...so the cap hit never changes.

habsoul's picture

Well, I called the Cammileri deal a few days ago. So does this mean Tanguay's not coming back? I think you bring Lang back for another year.

I don't like the Higgins deal. Love the Spacek signing. I'll miss Komisarek, but he wasn't a great blueliner. Let's see what else Bob has in mind

habs-13's picture

Komisarek had an off-year and is a great blueliner. Last year was just a blip on the radar in terms of his overall development. Every players suffers a setback season at some point, and Komi's happened to come on a contract year. Two seasons ago he was a defensive stalwart and was in the top 2 in both blocked shots and hits. He will go on to have a fine career, and its sad that we'll have to watch 6 times every year wearing that disgusting blue & white jersey.

"Hard work always beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."

let's check back in on the line-up

gomez - cammalleri - ???

Plekanec - a. kost - s. kost

lapierre - latendresse - pacioretty

metropolit - stewart - chipchura / laraque / d'aggostini

markov - hammer

spacek - gill

gorges - weber / o'byrn

price - halak

who's the leader on this team?  who signs next? it's either kovalev.  or koivu re-signs with plekanec moving back to the wing, which is where i think he belongs.

_koopy_'s picture

Cammalleri-Gomez-Tanguay

Akost-Pleks-Kovalev

Latendresse-Lapierre-Pacioretty

This is a pretty good team.

Lets just hope bob signs tanguay and kovy. I wouldnt mind having lang/koivu on the 2-3 line also...for a good price of course.

HardHabits's picture

If the AKost-Pleks-Kovalev line can play like it did 2 years ago, and Latendresse-Lapierre click like they did last year and Pacioretty ups the ante with them, then yes, 3 very, very good lines.

Steve Begin signs with Bruins (875k). Steve and his buddy Shaun Thorrton.

I'm just glad we signed someone with a name long enough to replace Komisarek on my jersey!!

Me thinks that the final move that Gainey will pull is sign Kovalev and hand him the C.

sidhu's picture

That would be the best thing he'd have done this off-season

Eric37's picture

Does this mean Plekanec is getting dealt?

Who are the wingers?

E.

dufour's picture

Cammalleri will probably play wing with Gomez, but if that doesn't work well he can play center.

projectpete19's picture

what the hell, komisarek signed for $4.5 mil, what the hell did bob offer him?

nfldanchor's picture

I never listen tot he TSN commentators . They never predicted Montreal to even make the playoffs 2 seasons ago and they finished first in their conference. We are a very skilled team if Kovalev is added and made Captain.

heavyd75's picture

what are the rumours right now

kovy`s coming to mtl hopefully.....

nfldanchor's picture

Komi is the enemy now and he is the leafs pylon on defense. We have a better defense as a result of our new acquistions . Lucic will take care of him when they play Boston lol! Last going off Komi couldn't even hit. He is damaged goods and I say good riddance. All he ever did was hit and he never really took the play out of our zone where we needed it most. Just ask Carey Price how many times Komi turned over the puck and caused a goal last year. Price will also excel now that we have a better defensive core.

coachdoug's picture

C'mon Bob lets get Kovy!...I have already have my Kovy with a C jersey I got from River City Sports...make me a prophet...

Go Habs Go!

Bill H's picture

Cammalleri 19 PPG with 6 GWG last season.  Anyone know how he is on the shoot out? We didn't sign much size in Gomez and Cammalleri, but lots of skill.  So it looks like we have a whack of centres: Cammalleri, Gomez, Pleks (RFA, unsigned), Lapierre, Metropolit, Chipchura.  Can any of these guys shift to wing.  I am sad to see our Captain going.  I would have liked to see him retire a Hab.  I wish him well.  We won't see the likes of him again.  Good luck Saku.  I hope you win a  Cup with Anaheim (If the Canadiens don't win it, that is.)

Bryan's picture

Didn't he play on the wing in Calgary?  If not, he's our #1 centre.

Officially on the fire/ostracize/tar and feather Bob Gainey bandwagon.

Shan's picture

Cammalleri is a MUCH better player than Gomez, imo.

Good news.

----- Their defenses are broken! Let the slaughter begin!

nfldanchor's picture

I am so happy now! I hope we get Kovy and Neil as well. Can koivu be signed as well for second or third line.

TSN: loves Calgarys d and what they have done ...and they never lost anyone (Camalleri not even considered a blow to their offence I guess).

TSN also loved what Calgary did at the trade deadline. They were declared the winners on that day also. But it never panned out. Gotta love it when TSN declares a winner...especially when it's not the team with the CH.

 TO NEXT YEAR...

sidhu's picture

By my (unofficial) calculations, we have spent 45.094 total, leaving about 11.7m to sign 5 players.

Under contract (15 total - 43.344):
Lapierre - .800
Markov - 5.75
Hammer - 5.50
Metro - 1.00
Laraque - 1.50
Halak -.775
OB - .942
Price - 2.20
AK46 - 3.50
SK74 - .817
Gorges - 1.10
Gomez - 7.38
Cammalleri - 6.00
Spacek - 3.83
Gill - 2.25

Callups (2 total - 1.75)
Weber - .875
MaxPower - .875

You have to throw in about $6 ml for Pleks,Lats,D'ag and Stewart given qualifying offers.

Komo, you didn't! Please tell me it's not true! Anywhere but toronto!

coachdoug's picture

Wow Komi is now a Leaf...strange days...glad Bob did not resign at the price he was asking...curse of the Leafs will be on him...

Go Habs Go!

Komisarek, I hope George Laraque beats the crap out of you.

Overrated piece of crap.

A. Berke's picture

Don't worry the bruins will also be playing the laffs 6 times and yes Lucic will be there.  :-)

SERIOUSLY KOMO?!

JB_15's picture

Fuck that big galoot komisarek

Cammalerri will burn him every time in front of the net when komisarek misses the puck and falls down.

wow, komi to the laffs. what a peice of *** for joining them. lucic, pound the *** outta him

Komi was never any good. I hope

CHsam's picture

This team sure looks different all of a sudden.... Now we need to sign Kovalyev

Bye Koivu.

LesFleurs's picture

Komi is officially a Laff. Now we'll get to enjoy his weak turnovers.

Jon Hackett's picture

Typical habs fan... you can't wish Komo a good career in toronto you have to shut him down...

I hope he does well cause he's an awesome guy and he deserves to be on a winning team (althought I don't know if toronto is that team...)

Habsolute's picture

I'm really disappointed by this!!!

Burke gets Komi

nooooooooooooooooo Komisarek to Toronto!!!!!!!!!!!!

InGy's picture

ahh fack....i used to love this guy.

Habsrule1's picture

I am seeing some positivity...I love it!

Not done yet...we need to at the very least sign Tanguay....and Kovy.

Cammalleri is so good that his is the only 6 million dollar signing not being discussed on TSN. Back to what is Burke going to do next?

WestHab's picture

I'm suprised he signed with Montreal, but I'm very happy about it!

"responsibility"

Shiloh's picture

OK - a good acquisition - he has some grit too.

man, i hate the laffs, we get more talented, and the laffs get bigger and tougher. i sure hope BGL is eating his wheaties this summer.

Man I am freaking pumped.

I feel like that guy at the gym who just bench pressed 4 plates on each side.

Can't wait till October!

HABZ24's picture

yaaa  now wer talking!! camellari great catch!! gill size ,experience, spachek experienced, gomez experience.

yikes, laffs going hard after komi

JB_15's picture

TSN reporting Komisarek likely to Toronto.

If this happens...

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Corporate's picture

Yeah but how much did they pay for him?

since1988's picture

he had 92 goals in the last three seasons and two of those were with the Kings with one season him being hurt where he still had 19 goals solid pick up

Xtrahabsfan's picture

Antropov?

db's picture

Let's hope we can get him to throw the body on Komi and the Laffs

Corporate's picture

He has size and can score. I would love that.

InGy's picture

Me too, always liked him.

LesFleurs's picture

Lang, Kovy, Tanguay? These are the 3 I need to come back.

Or do I want Gaborik and Tanguay

heavyd75's picture

you want gaborik and kovy, tanguay can get injured alot like gabs

Led's picture
Things are looking up folks. I figure we have about $12 million left. If we could get two of Kovy, Koivu, Tangs or Havlat it would be pretty good. Of course we still have the forwards size issue. I say keep signing Bob, then sort out any cap issues with trades later in the summer.

Velavok's picture

Proven that he can score, did it in LA with little to no support. Young, right in his prime, on paper should be a fantastic fit with gomez feeding him. The PP is looking alot better now.

IMO he was one of the best talents out there, would rather have him than havlat or gabby and prob paid less than we would have for those 2 wingers.

Could be the best signing gainey has had since he took over, sure hope it plays out that way :)

Goal totals the last few years 26,34,19,39.

deuce6's picture

I want another d-man..

coutNY's picture

doubtful that he'll go after anything further as fara as dMen with anything of suggnificates at least. They have to fill some hole on offense. Maybe with some size...

the only reason Cammalleri scored 39 goals, was because he had Iginla. there is NOBODY LIKE IGINLA on the habs. and he's a midghet at 5'8". WE NEED S I Z E  UP FRONT! Gainey go look at the Bruins size dumbass!

oshawahabsfan's picture

You do realize the Bruins centres are smaller than ours, it's how you play and Gomez and Cammalleri don't play like little girls to use Pleks' words

Trisdin's picture

Who do you think you are crapping on my team's leader like that?. Bob is working, what are you doing besides praising the Bruins!

the Bruins didn't win the cup

tony d's picture

man, some of you wouldn't be happy no matter what...even if we had an all-star team, you'd find something to crap on....grow up

JB_15's picture

anything else you want to copy word for word from pierre mcguire

MC had 80+ points in LA as well.

Get real.

He's 5'9 you retard!

Don't short change him.

Now can we afford any other players? I think Gionta would come cheap and a gionta-Gomez-Camellari line would be nice,,, but i really want kovalev back also!

danedmunds's picture

they must have about 15 left not including the RFA's.. just enough room for kovalev and one more, then fill the holes baby.. love this one... so pumped
