Komisarek joins rival Leafs; Bégin to Bruins

Mike Komisarek is now a Toronto Maple Leaf. Which suggests that Mikhail Grabovski no longer will be the most loudly booed Maple Leaf when Toronto comes to the Bell Centre next season.

The deal is for five years at $4.5 million per season.

Komisarek was a popular man during the first day of free-agency, courted by at least 10 teams just one hour into the process. He's now headed to Brian Burke's Leafs, giving Toronto the size the Leafs GM covets.

TSN reports the deal is said to include a limited no-trade clause, giving Komisarek the opportunity every September to give the Leafs a list of 12 teams to which he would accept a trade, should the relationship between player and team not work out the way both expect it will.

Also today, Steve Bégin signed with the Boston Bruins, moving nearer Montreal from the Dallas Stars.

Visit the Bruins website for a conference call with Bégin, who said it will be "fun to be on the other side" of the famed Bruins-Canadiens rivalry, and that he'll "be on the right side now," as well as the announcement on the Bruins site.

Still lacking size up front on the Habs, but then....change is good I suppose....Ummm

I sincerely hope that Begin gets booed (as much as Komo will) when he returns to the BC !

Ouf, i feel that Komi's gonna get it when he visits...

If Komo though Lucic was hard...

well wait until he gets a wack from Laraque :)

Pre-Lucic Beatdown......maybe worth $4.5mill/yr

Post-Lucic Beatdown.....NOT worth $4.5mill/yr

And I'm a Komi fan

That was posted shortly after noon today, judging from the comments.

Sportsnet reported that it was very close between Kovalev and MTL.  We don't have to fill all of the spots, remember, Montreal is famous for bringing up kids who have exciting rookie years.

heavyd75's picture

can i see where it says that on sportsnet please.... i hope we sign him for less and get havlat or tanguay

i cant find anything about Kovy

I guess you have not read much of what is going on with this primaddonna. Let us describe his way of doing business.

a) Signs longterm no trade contract

b) Decides he does not want to fulfill the contract, hangs the rookie coach out to dry, requests trade.

c) Ottawa structures a trade to the Oiler's, but he refuses to go. But, didn't he request a trade out of Ottawa??!! Wants to set his own terms, though he bailed on his team.

d) You know what they say about putting a rotten apple into a good crate. Someone summed him up when they called him, this years version of Yashin!!!

G-Man's picture

Already? Let him play a game for the Habs, wouldja? Sheesh! :)

I don't like this move at all...KOMI was a crushing hitter and owned the boards on his side...

this is a big loss folks, and if it means that breeze crap has a sure roster spot, then I'm going to burn my jersey... on another note, I liked the GOMEZ trade.

----- 1. KOVY is now in his prime, sign him now, and give him the 'C'

Don't sweat it. They have already fitted Gil for those skates with batteries that melt the ice beneath you and make a player 0.0001% faster. With his new-found speed, opposing forwards will be aghast the way the lookouts in the crow's nest of the Titanic were when they finally spotted the iceberg.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture

Gill, sissy Spacek, now camillari....i'm way behind on the musical chairs.

other than gill, we will soon be called the smurfs...everyone under 6' join here! maybe Gainey knows about some rule change coming up.

Did I hear this or was I napping (dreaming) - Feaster on TSN re Komi --"Mtl just lost their best defenseman". Lucic made Komi a "has-been" at 27....gone was the reputation and along came numerous incidents of him face-washing players a foot shorter than him. It was embarassing to watch....

Oh yeah sorry fester, Pang, and Dregger.  Markov is a 4th D for sure.  Funny how they get paid to pay atteneiton to the game and miss out on the fact that Markov is an amazng D.  wonder what these twats thought of Lindstrom 7 years ago. (not that markov is Lindstrom but still...)

mjames's picture

This is not my idea but it was raised by another poster. I think he raises a very good alternative to the Gomez fiasco. We trade Gomez and another player to the Sens for Heatley. Both contracts are a wash. We would throw in another player(s) such as Laracque/Metroplit/Pyatt/Chipchura/ Fischer/Carle/Emelin.

I guess we'll have to see how Gainey fills in the remaining holes.  We have a pretty solid D now, which will help with keeping the net clear for Carey.  Maybe our D will stick up for the goalie once in a while now.  Gomez was a shocker, but not a bad move, he'll fit in.  And how do you go wrong with Cammellari (I'll spell it right if he scores enough!!)  he's awesome, big or small.

at least he can still get tuned by lucic MANY times a year! will be way more funny now

start signing our ufas please bob.

Well, we have most of the pieces to the puzzle...just a few more to go.  A lot depends on Martin.  I'm betting his experience will take this team a lot farther than Carbo.   I'm hoping with new leadership, we'll get a lot more mileage out of the youngsters.  Pacioretty, D'Ags, the Brothers, Pleks, Latendresse, Price, etc.  If these guys can find their game along with the new comers, we are back fighting for home ice advantage.

Interesting turn of events ,from yesterdays deal.......  a whole new look Habs Team is emerging,I can't see a real downside ,to today's deals,   ........Still like to see larger centers, but ?????  I almost still think that Bob's not done yet,  I'm sure yesterdays deal was only one piece of a three way thing,we haven't heard yet.

Becomming a leaf, now that's a bit insulting, but I have to agree with a lot of the sentiment that Mikey, has lost his confidence in the tough guy department,& he really does make a lot of errant passes,

and in keeping with long time tradition, once your traded from the Habs, then Who Cares, what happens to you.

Sorry, given the Leafs let Gill walk a while ago, and now Gill has essentially been signed to replace Komo at a discount, I have to say this is the worst news possible.

Given that I rarely get to watch Mtl. on TV here in To. the prospect of watching Komo clocking the Habs on the few Saturday nights I might get to see sucks large.

Bill H's picture

Boy, talk about a quick mood change in the room.  2 hours ago, there was a lynch mob heading down the street, ropes and torches in hand, looking for Bob.  Now the majority seem placated with a 40G scoring midget.  Pass me some of that lithium will you?  You guys are hilarious.  LOL

punkster's picture

But that's because you have become my new Most Interesting Man in the World. I can just hear the voice on that commercial..."He finds amusement in all that he does and no one is more amusing than him".

I like this new look for the team Brian. Expensive experiment? Maybe. But it sure beats the hell out of standing pat. They needed the shakeup and maybe these new pieces will give us a better team. Time will tell.

It's a much better team that the one that ended the 08-09 campaign. They don't have the size that Gainey was looking for up the middle, but probably a hell of a lot more skill than he/I hoped for. The way he purged the leadership of last year's squad, assuming that Koivu is in fact done, still leaves me curious as to why? Carbo alluded to it when he rode into the sunset. We may never know the details, but Gainey's actions make me think that he had just had enough.

punkster's picture

So the last pieces (Koivu, Kovalev and Tanguay) have yet to be placed on the board. I don't expect all 3 to be back but I can live with any one or two of them. I'd like all 3 but it's not realistic to expect. Oh, forgot Lang...not so sure about him. What's your take on Lang?

Lang was a big positive surprise last season, but I can't see ponying up any scratch for a guy with that injury. That is why, barring a miracle, I have Chips to go as well. The expendable one of the three you listed is certainly Koivu. I think Gainey wants an almost clean slate on the leadership of the team.

punkster's picture

I agree that Koivu is, on paper, expendable given the new faces we now have. So without a "super star" both Kovalev and Tanguay are important. They're stars but they're not top echelon. And that's whay I hope they both sign. If we get just one of these two we'll still be missing something big and by the look of things there aren't any "bigs" left to grab...yet. Maybe during the season.

Ron's picture

Of the 3, I would hope that Kovy is brought back. If so he should be given the C and see if he can rule the roost of the younger players. Saku sure as hell didn't >

How'd you like to be Komisarek coming back to MTL next season?

Velavok's picture

I wish Komi well. I was a fan and enjoyed having him as part of our team. He had an off year last year but so did the whole team. He got a nice payday from the leafs, how can you blame him for taking it

Gainey knew he wasnt going to sign with us so he made alternate plans and shored up the D, good work.

4.5 -5 per year for 5ish years was bandied about as what komi would get on the open market and i do recall lots of posts here over the last 3 months saying that was too much for him.

I agree, IMO i think that is too much $$ for what he brings to the table, specially for 5 years.

If bob can lock up Kovy at ~4 per on a 2-3 year deal things would be looking solid. Tanguay would be nice too but I fear his asking price is north of 5.5 and i dont know if thats in the cards.

Have there been any updates on what's happening with Kovy? Maybe a stupid question, but will signings keep happenening through the night or can I go to sleep?

LesFleurs's picture

Signings will keep happening.

Iceberg84's picture

I don't understand...I thought we were offering Komo 4 million or something along those lines? Wasn't the line we weren't planning on crossing somewhere in the range of 5-6 million or more? Why would he sign with the leafs for so little and not with Montreal? This frustrates and confuses me.

he went to the laffs cuz obviously look who is running the team and look who is the head coach of the laffs thats why he went there

HabsFanNorway's picture

Me too. I just can't understand this!!!

Take a look at video #2. He's a freakin' beast.

http://www.georgeslaraque.com/default.asp?mn=1.39.57

I can't wait till Colton Orr gets his face cracked.

By my math, we have almost $10,000,000 left with 18 players. Does not include Max, Webber or Stewart. If Kovy comes back at 4.5 ml and with those three that would leave us $3 ml to spend.

LesFleurs's picture

I think it's just under 14mill with the cap increase.

punkster's picture

Thumbs up to Bob so far. I like the changes. Going to be a fun season coming up.

Here's a fair question: Does Gainey break with tradition and appoint the Captain, or do the guys in the room get to vote on it?

HabsInBlood's picture

Kovy will be the captain, and the Habs will play like they did when he had it on his sweater last year.

He seems like a different guy when he is wearing the C. Also, who the heck else would the guys in the room vote for?

Ron's picture

The Breezer.....ha ha

Crap, Gainey better just appoint him rather than risk that possibility!

andrewberkshire's picture

Anyone else want Georges Laraque to kick the living s**t out of Komisarek next year and turn him into a turtle like Lucic did? Hell, Lucic will probably do it again.

Exit716's picture

It will happen first time the Leafs play the Habs on HNIC.

I'm betting my life on it.

Gainey will instruct Martin to have BGL kick the living crap out of him in front of Leaf Nation.

Face it, if Lucic would kill Komisarek and wanted no part of BGL, then Komisarek is going to be in a world of hurt.

db's picture

Thing is.. Komi won't be the toughest guy on his team anymore

Ron's picture

He played the tough act but look where that got him.

j2c's picture

Well I'm sad to see Komi go at such a reasonable price. My fiance has a Komisarek jersey is there any way we would be able to change the name and number on the back of the jersey?

GP HABS FAN's picture

Bob yesterday i decided to give you 24 hours to show us what you were doing with all this, it looked bad, but...You made up for it and now I feel good.  Good Job Mr.Gainey

ghg31price's picture

Personally, I was confused about the Gomez trade yesterday, but looking at what has been done today, I kinda like it... Komo is a huge dissapointment though... He could have gone anywhere, why the hell did it have to be the leafs? Last season he was held to be the future face of the habs, no he's nothing but a disapointment to Habs fans everywhere. Way to go Komo!

Chuck's picture

He went to the Leafs because the best that he could command was 4.5 million.

the Habs are at least alright!  Not Contenders, but better than the Tri City Americans!   good day (somehow)

fun police's picture

flyer fans ripping their team all day for boucher signing, letting knuble go and then signing lapierriere.

Bryan's picture

I'm sure Knuble was just a victim of the salary cap situation they have.  Lapierriere is a great signing though.  Boucher's past his prime... but he has experience and isn't bad.  Could be worse.

Officially on the fire/ostracize/tar and feather Bob Gainey bandwagon.

Everybidy may *** on me but they do have a good goalie for the first time in a while.

Bill H's picture

I can't understand why people get so pissed with him.  Like all those people that will be booing him would sign for $5M less over 5 years with a team that was in disarray last year.  Get over it people.  He's a hockey player, not your wife of 25 years.

It will be interesting to see how he does next season.  No Markov at his side.  How is the shoulder?  Is he damaged as some people say from the dust up with Lucic?  We will miss him in the dressing room for sure. And he is first rate at blocking shots.

He's a quality guy, even with certain deficiencies on the ice.  I hope he does well, but not against us.

Exit716's picture

I would send Laraque after him first time on HNIC and administer a severe beating on national TV.

Preferably in Montreal. That would break his spirit once and for all.

GP HABS FAN's picture

Well I hope he doesn't do very well,  But if he does he does

you should get a job in the press. good predictable line.  I heard it on the team today.  The Habs are the one thing in my life that I can go "overboard" with.  This is he biggest sports blog  in North America.  Its Crazy!  And yes, Komo I will Boo loudly

Bill H's picture

LOL knock yourself out Joey.

ooder's picture

now no one...and i mean no one can blame Gainey for sitting back and not doing anything.

and no one should be complaining about the signings either...jsut like last season he drasticaly imporved our team, now it's up to the coach and players to prove themselves.

spacek is a very good d-man..deffinetly top 4

if hal gill was good enough for the camps he is good enough for me..especially with jaques martin

cammaleri is small but size is overrated...prime example is thornton vs fleury (one is a giant the other a midget and iw ould rather have the latter in the playoffs anytime)

Gomez..the price is a little high..but it never hurts to make friends around the league and i will reserve judgment when i see himplay...he is deffinetly not a bad hockey palyer though

komisarek for 4.8??? really?? i dont think so

now i just hope he gets koivu, kovalev and tanguay to stay..and we are gooood :D

--- we need a kovalev

Puck Bard's picture

I like what I see so far. It's not what I anticipated, but it's creative and may work.

If BG saw what McGuire saw we would have signed him.  where is McGuire a GM.  In Hartford, Brockville,  Hamilton?  4.5 is easy.  Score a goal and don't cause them. And if your tough do not embarass a franchise by injuring yourself and and schickenshitting out after a fight agianst your main rivals: Boston Bruins.  Milan Lucic will kick his *** agian.  Not to say him and Gabrovski and Higgins won't kick our *** this season.  they will
