About
Dave Stubbs has been a sportswriter since 1976, which was roughly a decade after he wore the first of many holes through the knees of his jeans playing nets in road hockey (using a modified butterfly popularized by Hall of Famer Glenn Hall). He still has the welts to show on his shins from that rotten, frozen orange ball.
Stubbs kept thick hockey scrapbooks filled with game summaries and Gazette and Montreal Star stories, collected dozens of Bee Hive Corn Syrup photos and put a fortune of hockey cards through the spokes of his bikes. First book ever owned: Scrubs On Skates, the classic by Scott Young (Neil's dad).
Stubbs's fantasy is to travel back in time to the 1950s and watch the great Canadiens dynasty that won five consecutive Stanley Cups. Or a decade earlier, to watch Elmer Lach centre Rocket Richard and Toe Blake on the fearsome Punch Line. Or at least to get Rogie Vachon into the Hockey Hall of Fame – where he belongs.

the blue chip this off season is halak what can they get for him and will he be traded. i think if they package halak and plekanec they can land something decent in return maby a Good second line center with size. another option is add hamrlik for salary purposes and aquire a quality defenceman.
lots of time between now and the season for gainey (if still around ) to tinker the line-up.
This is the reason I'm kinda hoping Tanguay AND Kovalev return. & sign a decent mature mentor backup to Price.
Allowing the Habs to possibly trade Pleks & Halak to get a "bigger" #1 Center???
Sure would make me happy... lol
Anything on Tanguay, Koivu or Kovalev yet?
a previous post said sportsnet says kovy and the habs are close to a deal..

Taylor Hall on the 2010-2011 roster
Thanks for posting the interview Dave. Granted he was paid $6M but it sounds like he had other offers but came here. Sounds good to me. I wonder if we could re-sign Tanguay and Kovalev now.
Top line FWDs command anywhere from $5-7 Million/yr, both Gomez and Cammi are in line w. payroll. I can't wait for Koivu to land in that $6M zone, much older, slower and susceptible now to injury. Give him credit for taking a pay cut these last four years, he'll land 'that big one' but thankfully doesn't look like it will be here.
KOVY? I absolutely love this guy since day #1 as a NYR and realize he is not worth more than $5/yr as his mind isn't into an 82 game season anymore. Geez even the Russian Nat'l team doesn't bother calling him anymore.
--I will die a delirious fan and never apologize for it!--
Great signing...
Him and Gomez will work the PP nicely...
Hell, throw Gil in front of the net, habs can click at 25% again.
i think if bob can resign kovalev and then sign beauchemin we will be in real good shape with cap space to boot!come on bob sign these 2 guys ! if not havlat and beachemin or gaborik would be great too!
Good work by Gainey - a sniper is what we NEED. Even at 6 million, Cammallerii is a worthwhile gamble. Spacek also good... Gill.. not bad. Still say Gomez is going to be a regret, and that Sather now owes Bob a HUGE personal favour. But time will tell.
~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!
Cammelleri's contract seems pretty fair for both sides. Spacek is a pretty good puckmoving defenceman that should help our transition game and PP. Agree regarding Gomez. Somehow Sather got Gainey to take on Gomez's huge contract and still give up a legit 20-goal/50-point winger and top defensive prospect. Don't know why we bothered signing Gill. Should be out hunting for a #2 defenceman that can replace Komisarek, instead of settling for a downgrade.
"Hard work always beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."
what are the chances of gainey signing kovy tonight... anyone has some inputs on this situation

Taylor Hall on the 2010-2011 roster
Gainey must always pay more for hockey players in exchange for courage, It seems like Mike has lots of that.
still alot of big names out there..gainey are you there.
need more , want more, come on Bob we still have cap room.
antropov? kovy? tk?
who would you like?
still need a big body...never really liked antropov when he was a leaf.....if BG not sure then don't do it.
Kovy...yes. you know what you get and we have upgraded in terms of talent so that could work for him.
i would like him to gamble on gaborik why not..he is dynamite when not injured. i would take him over havlat but would need to know what kind of injuries he had in past. do ur homework gainey.
i still think we need another dman. i guess beuchaminn(spelling) would do but not sure.
i like chris neil...were smaller. need some more nastiness.
i look at other teams like flyers and laffs ,bruins there all bigger and nasty..can we compete against that size. we have more talent overall.
The Habs can afford likely 1 More "Big Name"
Kovalev or Tanguay or Gaborik or Havlat
& hopefully have enough to sign the RFA's
There will be no Beauchemin or Schneider or Dandenault or Bouillon or Brisebois - unless they are willing to take league minimum & only AFTER the big name forward & the RFA's are signed.
So one more UFA splash, if there is 2 more - you can expect us to pop the Cap, but in a great position to make a blockbuster trade. Hey anything can happen now, Gainey has proven that - Cammalleri is a GREAT pickup, it just means either:
- we lose one of Tanguay or Kovalev
or
- We lose both, but hopefully land Havlat or Gaborik at least.
So far IMO Gainey has done a VERY good job, and I am glad to see many people looking at things more positively (still a few negative posts, but overall much more positive) it sure feels a lot better.
Oh P.S. if someone could tell Anakin Slayd to remove that Video saying he's going to bust his Komisarek out, and change the lyrics to BURN that Komisarek. I will be a happy man
lmao!
Cammalleri and Spacek could help our PP A LOT this year.
Seems like a genial enough guy. I'm sure he'll be good. A bigger, better, tougher Russ Courtnall...
i hope he doesn't have the vaclav prospal syndrome
- Pride + Envy = Second Place
What's "The Vaclav Prospal syndrome"?
look at his career stats...he has a 40 point season...and 80 point, then a 40, then an 80, then a 40...camalleri's first 4 years are similar
- Pride + Envy = Second Place
wasn't he hurt during that last season with kings? hence maybe why he had 40 points
Good interview. I'm optimistic about this guy. I believe other teams were offering similar money for him, so I think he actually made a commitment to the team.

can someone please shed some light on the kovy situation...

Taylor Hall on the 2010-2011 roster
I am not very confident he is going to re-sign :(
you guys may think money was the biggest factor in this deal but i knw for a fact that mike has family here in montreal and im sure that was a factor to him coming here.
Personally I think he signed here for one thing only.
30 MILLION DOLLARS
Doesn't change you, except...
i agree, everyhting he is saying is BS about wantint to come here, i bet gainey threw in a million extra a year if he mentioned gomez being a major factor, LOL so he wouldnt feel like an idiot

Taylor Hall on the 2010-2011 roster
Gainey overpaid for Cammalleri. You never get good value buying a player after a career high year.
It's "Buy low, sell high" not vice versa.
Sometimes you have to for very good players, it wouldn't be the first time...so if Cammaleri repeats his exploits, then price will be worth it.
"Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."
Agreed - UFAs are always overpays, but there are degrees of overpaying.
I have a hunch Tanguay's contract will be less than Cammalleri's. And Tanguay is the superior player.
interesting that he noted one of the main reasons he came too montreal was because of the gomez aquisition. maby gainey isn't the big moron that some thought? of course none of the same people who wher all over him for the last year will give him any hats off for this signing would take away too much pride
So true. There's always a degree of reasoning behind Gainey's deals. The naysayers are just too quick to dismiss him as an idiot. I hope he proves all those morons wrong.
i like what bobs done but there are still alot of holes
Ha.... He said it himself, the Gomez trade is one of the reasons why he signed here.
How would we have signed a player like this without that trade? Come and play with either Lapierre, Plekanec, or Metrpoloit, our only centermen!
well said buddy!
Grabovski- please get a decent haircut!
Great interviews. Who said good players dont want to come here.
big star players still don't. only little midgets.
almost everyone lol
nice question dave
