Leafs' Komisarek knows what awaits at Bell

Just off the phone with Mike Komisarek, who today signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Komisarek signed a five-year, $22.5-million contract with the Leafs, and in so doing leaves the only NHL club he's known.

"I've played in tough environments, I'm sure it's not going to be easy coming back," Komisarek said of what he'll face from Canadiens fans when the Maple Leafs come to the Bell Centre. "It's the competitive nature of the game (but) it's stuff like that that you don't really worry about."

Matt Keator, Komisarek's agent, said early this evening that negotiations with the Canadiens were "respectful." Komisarek agreed with that assessment.

"I've always looked at Bob (Gainey) in high regard," he said. "I've respected what he's done as a hockey mind. He's had plenty of success. He's always been good to me and I've always appreciated everything they've done for me and the way they've treated me. It's unfortunate that things haven't worked out (with the Canadiens) but it's the business of what we do."

Here's audio of a portion of our conversation.

I knew Brian Burke would land Mike Komisarek...Brian Burke was the worst thing to happen to the Canadiens...Komisarek will haunt the Canadiens ever single time we play the Leafs...This is not looking good...

Knowing is Half the Battle...

I would like to offer Mike Komisarek my best wishes.  I wish he's as well-loved and respected in Toronto as was Brian McCabe before him.  And I wish he becomes free to be the player he really is, now that he's out from under Andrei Markov's shadow.  Those are about the best wishes I have for him right now.

As far as Komisarek goes, Bertrand Raymond of www.ruefrontenac.com called it May 7, 2009. For those of you who can read French see: http://www.ruefrontenac.com/bertrandraymond/4963-bert-sur-komisarek (if not) here is the gist of the following two quotes extracted from his article:

"Un informateur m'apprend que Komisarek a ramassé tous ses effets personnels avant de reprendre le chemin de la maison, dans la région de Long Island. Il n'a rien laissé derrière lui, laissant clairement transpirer qu'il n'avait pas l'intention de revenir."

Loosely translated " A source informs me that Komisarek has moved all of his personal effects back home to Long Island and has left nothing behind and does not have the intention of returning"

"Sa valeur marchande en a pris un coup, même s'il parviendra néanmoins à faire sauter la banque quelque part. Dans une situation comme celle-là, Brian Burke, à Toronto, risque d'être un homme particulièrement dangereux."

Later on in the article he states that despite his barganing power being weakened due to a poor season he will probably 'brake the bank' somewhere. And in a situation like that, Brian Burke in Toronto could be a dangerous man.

So I guess the writing was on the wall. I think the Habs are a far better team now than last season. As far as size goes Gill helps. And if Boston or the Leafs unleash Lucic or Orr +++ I think Laraque, Stewart and Gill on the ice could be a great equalizer. With all that speed on the first line we could have a lot of PP opportunities as well.

And if size is a problem and Plekanec does not produce like a couple of seasons ago he could still be part of a trade to bring in size.

I bet Gainey wants a mulligan on that decision to fire Julien to keep Komisarek in the league.

Brainwashed loser. Does Keator tell you how to wipe your rear end moron?

Is it me or does Mike sound really out of it. Like he can't put two sentences together. I like how Dave asked him where he was going to eat and Mike sidesteps the answer, as if a bunch of us would show up there with some lead pipes in our hands wanting to put a beat down on him.

I think the kids got potential but there is no offense in his game at all. Best of luck against Lucic next year.

Komisarek was on a cellphone, I believe in Massachusetts (where his agent is based), when I reached him. He was literally getting out of a car going to dinner when we spoke. I think he sounds punchy from the craziness of the day.

I'm like Boone in this regard: I'll not say a bad word about him. He was available to me throughout his time in Montreal, win or lose, and never once did not return a voice or text message. Hockey's a business, at the end of the day. I'm guessing that Alex Tanguay and Saku Koivu learned that yesterday.

I ask myself what the Rocket or Lafleur or even Jean Béliveau might have done had they had the benefit of free-agency as today's players do. Loyalty is a good quality. In a short career like hockey can be, so too is taking care of yourself and your family to the best of your ability.

Luckily I am not bogged down by having known him personally! He apparently chose the Leafs for an extra few bucks a season, he obviously wanted out. It may be a business but that's too little money to make such a move. Kind of cheap I say. Frankly, his play had regressed to such an extent that he was not much of a factor in the second half of the season and playoffs. So I wonder what player the Leafs are actually getting...

sholi2000.com's picture

But he signed with the Leafs Dave.  The arch enemy of the Canadiens.  I hope They (the Canadiens) burn him every chance they get.  Traitor!

:)  Good Luck Mike, you're in Leaf Land Now!

I just had a great chat with Hall of Famer Dickie Moore, who played with both the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs.

He had a lot of interesting things to say about the past few days, and not in the voice of a bitter oldtimer who moans, "I remember when..."

Dickie knows the score. I'll write the piece today and post it here later.

I have to agree with what you said about Richard, Beliveau and the "what if" factor for free agency in their eras.

According to a story on Legends of Hockey, Dickie Moore wanted to keep playing  but the Canadiens wanted to trade him.

He opted to retire and was then picked up in an inter-league draft by the Leafs. Imlach convinced him to come back again.

Should also be noted that Dickie Moore was a Leafs fan living in Montreal as a kid.

Regardless, what Komisarek did was an insult to the fans.

what to do with my Komi jersey?

1) burn it

2) urinate on it and then burn it

3) change it to a vintage Recchi jersey

You'll be missed Komi. I'll never forget that breakaway OT goal you potted against the Laffs. Now just never do the same against us and all is forgiven. No hard feelings but I hope Luci whoops your ass.

i can't wait till we break out the new blue jerseys and white helmets and our new logo...it might look something like this:

plekanec centering gionta and camalleri.

- Pride + Envy = Second Place

RH's picture

That's pretty funny too. Although, the whole smurf angle is getting kind of tired fast.

Habsolute's picture

Things didn't work out because Mike didn't want it to work out, I'm sure the Habs would paid him $4.5 million a year...

Gionta and Gomez use to play together

what's the average height of the team?

Ya, and you would hate him.

terrier92's picture

I respect the Habs and hope they are always competitive. Nothing like a Habs-Bruins game when both are good. Now Toronto that is a team I really don't like and frankly do not see Burke turing that around. He is going bigger and more physical. We will see. Leafs suck.

Go Bruins

RH's picture

Agreed. Although, I do live in the Greater Toronto area and have noted a re-kindling of hope in the air, from the fans since Burke took over. It could just be the pollution though.

terrier92's picture

Hope sells tickets yet GRIT, Skill & Goaltending win cups..........

I meausre the Bruins against the teams in cup finals and frankly this year they didn't have it....it is really hard to win that damm thing.......you can have it all yet lack that extra gear you need to win in playoffs......crap Bruins had great regular season yet never took that next step as a team....with that said......LUCIC absolutely did...........he carried Savard and kessel on playoffs......was a beast down low, owned the boards and was a plus 12 in 10 games.........all right I like the kid but he is a winner,,,

Go Bruins
