Olympic break for Canadiens

posted by Dave Stubbs at 9h12 EST on Jul 2

Hockey Canada today released the names of the 46 players it will invite to its 2009-10 national men's team orientation camp next month, the first step toward selection of the Olympic team for Vancouver 2010 and the 2010 IIHF world championship.

Not one Canadiens player is on the list, though congratulations are due to Habs equipment manager Pierre Gervais, who will perform this task for his third consecutive Olympics.

Here's the full rundown.

What size ice surface do they play this on. Since it's in Vancouver, is it NHL size? Just wondering.

jmsheehy19's picture

I'm pretty sure that's what TSN was saying yesterday, can't remember for sure though

jmsheehy19's picture

haha, has anybody watched the segment with Yzerman on tsn.ca? Listen to his cell phone ring about a minute in.

Exit716's picture

Has Yzerman asked Dany Heatley's parents for permission to let Dany play?

Scratch that loser off the roster immediately.

Sportsnet.ca says Ottawa has a legit reason to file a grievance against Heatley to recoup the $4 million.

Next CBA will see the owners fight to rid the league of guaranteed contracts.

When comparing, these two team on paper are nowhere near close. USA projects to be a team that is really young with one or two stars (Kane, Parise...) where as Canada is fully loaded.  What do you guys think?

Even though team USA has improved, I personally beleive that it's is not enough to compete against teams such as Canada and Russia.

Here is the exert from Puckdaddy's chatter:

[Comment From hank]
kovalev to the kings? or is he staying in montreal?
12:32
Wyshynski:  The Habs pulled a two-year deal for him. Honestly, I think Montreal is a great spot for him now that there are other focal points (Cammy, Gomez) that are going to draw the heat he always received in the media.

Go Habs Go!

Ian G Cobb's picture

Doug- I just wonder if his attitude on the ice at times is what Bob wants to purge from the team. We all know what a fantastic player he is, when things are going his way but is his attitude at times might be what is rubbing off on the kids and worrying Bob.

When he wants to play there is none better but when he is sulking he can destroy a team.

coachdoug's picture

Ian...I would never argue L'Artiste is very tempermental...but if we get him as a bargain and he does not have to be "the guy" I think that role would fit him in the twilight of his career...I do think he an Martin will clash...We will know today I bet if he stays or goes...

Go Habs Go!

I'm not familiar with this puckdaddy person, so it's hard to say how much stock I would put into this report.

Listening to Tony Marinaro this morning on 990, he seemed to suggest that a Jacques Martin - Alex Kovalev relationship simply could not stand. It is order versus chaos. A system versus "artistry".

I would tend to agree with him.

coachdoug's picture

Puckdaddy is one of the best blogs in Hockey...google it

Go Habs Go!

Will do.

Cheers!

HABZ24's picture

i dont get it, never did. why oh why. the olympics are supposed to be for amateur athletes, then why are pro's making millions in the olympics? its all to make money for advertisers. stupid, stupid, stupid.

coachdoug's picture

Puckdaddy chat has Kovy with the Habs two year deal as of 12:32...might be a false alarm again...

Go Habs Go!

Our new Captain and all assistant Captains for our bright new squad will have to be EARNED at training camp this year.

I was going to post something along the same lines, Ian.

While I'm disappointed to see Koivu go, I like the idea of players competing in camp to wear the letters. With the "old guard" cleared out, there is ample room for others to step up and assume more responsibility.

Harani's picture

Double Post :)

Harani's picture

It's not true that the whole Canadiens roster will be on break.

Halak will prolly tend goal for Slovakia (And this time he'll have Marian Hossa and Zdeno Chara in front of him and not some whacko D)

The Belarussian Bears will join Grabovski for Team Belarus.

Pleky (if he signs here), Hammr and prolly Spacek would head out for Czechoslovakia.

And maybe Weber will make Team Swiss.

Gomez will prlly be on Team USA.

Y's picture

There hasn't been a team Czechoslovakia in almost 20 years

Kovy and Koivu - you guys will be missed

Harani's picture

Nik Antropov to Atlanta. 4 years/16 million.

TorontoHabsFan's picture

Whoa. I think I'd rather Gionta at $5m :)

Timo's picture

Wouldn't Markov be playing for Russia? Other than that no surprise. And I like it that way.

Gomez will be on the US team as well.

I'd rather we have no one play. Think about what the last Olympics did to the Rangers.

Chuck's picture

Who cares about the Rangers?  :)

I geuss I have to slow my posts down a bit?

Big Bird's picture

Excellent point.

For the same reason, this is why NCAA D-1 coaches hate it when their guys are called up to play for their national teams in the WJT during the winter holdays. They can't prevent them from playing, but they are not happy about it.

PrimeTime's picture

What's the point in emphasizing "no Habs" on the roster??? Anything to dig up to take a shot at our Habs. I really am getting a hate-on for the Montreal Sports Media. I think there are a few teams who don't have anyone on that list including Mouthpiece McGuire's now-beloved Leafs. Why not report how strong and competitive the camp will be instead of putting in the context that no Canadian Habs are included?? Is that too hard to do?? Oh, my bad, this is a Hab Insider site....what would we do without this critical info? I bet some GM's are very pleased that their players are not risking injury in a extra curricular activity. I wonder if Bob will ask his non-Canadian players to skip the Games....not likely, he has too much class unlike the Montreal Sports Media. Lawyers were traditionally the butt end of jokes as the lowest form of professionals, I see they have competition.

hab_skill's picture

I agree with GPK that this way, no one will get injured while playing in the Olympics.

terrier92's picture

Milan Lucic is a winner and will help Canada win Gold..........It is great to see that Canadian powers that be understand his value to a team.............BTW can anyone help me out on background of Steve Begin?

I guess he will be 4th line center with Bitz and Thorton......Interesting how some teams are going \

small and fast-Canadians

bruins younger and big

Toronto...lumbering D are going to kill them...Burke's a boob

Go Bruins

sisu's picture

Begin is guts personified.  He'll go through a wall for a teammate.  He's reasonably responsible, ideal for the 4th line and can fill in on the 3rd.  Can play W or C.

A few seasons ago he was lining a guy up for a hit.  The guy ducked, Begin tripped over him and ran his teeth into the dasher.  I think his teeth cut clean through his lip.  He might have missed one or two shifts.

terrier92's picture

Thanks for the insight. Gee based your comments he will be very popular in Boston. Julien must have seen the same things in him to bring him on board.

go bruins

Natrous's picture
Begin pretty much lost 4-6 teeth on that play, and was right back in the mix a few minutes later. The guy is a warrior right down to the wire, and he's an excellent role player on any team's third line. He'll be well-liked in Boston and I was sorry to see him go, but that's what happens when you develop from within instead of trading for most of your talent :)

PrimeTime's picture

Feed the animals what they want. Have you ever watched a Bruin game??? The loudest ovation is for hits. Even after goals they have to have their PA announcer "whoo" the crowd.

terrier92's picture

Animals?  In the Athens of America???? Hardly....lol

We do like our hitting but I will tell you Jean Ratelle was beloved here...hard to beleive he allowed folks to forgive Sinden for trading Esposito

Go Bruins

Mike T's picture

BU Terriers?

terrier92's picture

Yes

Go Bruins

Mike T's picture

You a fan of them, or associated in some way?

terrier92's picture

We need to talk. My message to the boys in neighborhood was simple.......... She cries....you die.....lol

Go Bruins

Mike T's picture

lol i'm from Ontario, Watchorn is my buddies sister...no crying neccessary

Mike T's picture

i'm talking about the womens hockey team of course...

Sliver24's picture

This one fact tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about what's wrong with our Habs.

Natrous's picture
That we don't have any franchise Canadian hockey players? What about all the other nationalities on our team? Kovalev or Markov could be captain of Russia for example..

BKAK72's picture

Kovalev has been turned away from the Russian National Team for the last two/three years.

--I will die a delirious fan and never apologize for it!--

Ian G Cobb's picture

Drastic measures were definitely needed, our team was a disaster starting with the coaching and ending with many players that did not know the meaning of team mates and team concept. The young kids coming up were being poisoned by this selfish attitude.

Bob did the best for us I believe. It is a new day from Hamilton to Montreal. I am going to enjoy the making of our new club. The only bad taste in my mouth is the way Koivu our best player for many years and a great human being seems to have been treated. His job here was over Yes! but I hope he was properly dismissed. We might never know.

IAN

SmartDog's picture

The problem I have is that Bob's answer seems tob e to make a sweep of players instead of figure out how to keep them in line.  Obviously Ribiero was a wasted talent who needed a firmer hand and has gone on to the kind of success that I doubt the much over-paid, possibly washed-up Scott Gomez ever will.

Wait for Gainey to decide in 2-3 years that Gomez is 'part of the problem' when he buys him out.  While I like a few of the moves, for me, I think our chances at a cup went significantly down this week because of gambles on players that are generally suspect.

~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Natrous's picture

Washed up? Gomez has a "sub-par" year while leading the NYR in points and you're calling him washed up? Here's a player who consistently puts up around 50 assists a year, and can be expected to throw in close to 20 goals, who played on a rudderless Rangers squad last season, and who has been reunited with Gionta with whom he had excellent chemistry in Jersey.

And you call him washed up. I don't get it.

SmartDog's picture

You're right that 'washed up' is not the phrase.  The guy scored over 16 goals only TWICE in his ten year career. He's a good passer but he's no Adam Oats and hardly worth half of his contract.

~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Puck Bard's picture

Agreed Ian, and BG could not send the message to this young players that mediocrity is rewarded.

SmartDog's picture

No? Then how come so many are still with us?  Higgins was not the worst performer.  Komiserik was mediocre down the stretch and is making great money.  I think Gainey's message is in part that he didn't know what  to do with players he hand-picked.

~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Ian G Cobb's picture

Right!!

GPK's picture

Gomez was invited, not Gionta.

I'm happy that most of our players won't be in Vancouver. It'll be a good rest, and less chance of getting injured.

MikeL's picture

Actually, there is a respectable portion of our team that will go - just not any for Team Canada.

Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn will play for Belarus.
Plekanec, Hamrlik, and Spacek for the Czechs.
Markov for the Russians.
Halak for Slovakia.
Gomez for America.
Weber for the Swiss.

Bryan's picture

Did Gomez/Gionta not get invited for the US?

MR HAB's picture

Not really..... LOL...

Equipment manager:   Pierre Gervais

What about Cammalleri?

Mike T's picture

thank God Savard didn't get invited. Lucic would be alright on Team Canada..

MikeL's picture

I'm happy Savard won't be on the team, but that's a pretty big snub from Hockey Canada. Savard and Spezza don't even get an invite to the camp, yet Jordal Staal and Dan Cleary do? I just hope this won't be a repeat of '98 in Nagano - taking role players over the best players.
