I love Koivu, but I think it is time for him to go. Not because he can't bring something to the team though. I am just tired of all the disrespectful comments from certain members of the media and a certain former habs player. I think he deserves to end his career in peace elsewhere. Anyway, it's nice to be on a forum where people aren't bashing Koivu; let's face it that isn't the case on the other side.
It appears neither Koivu nor Kovalev are returning.
http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=...
Koivu:
“I had good conversation with Saku on Wednesday morning and I thanked him for everything. He was tremendous for us for a very long time, a special player,” said Gainey. “I have great memories of his time here and Saku was a great player for us. The time came for us as an organization to move on, create a new team with a new identity.”
Kovalev:
“Both sides were interested in having Alex come back to Montreal, but we couldn’t come to terms in time,” said Gainey who had to move quickly as players were being snatched up in a hurry. “As it stands now, this would mark the end for Alex with the Canadiens.”
14,084 signatures wanting Kovy back.
There's another petition link for Kovy at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/sauvons-kovalev where there are 8279 signatures and counting for him returning. The objective being to hit the 10,000 signature mark.
Also, there is a protest gathering outside the Bell Center this afternoon (Sunday).
Adding up the two petitions
1) the above one with 8279 signatures and
2) the one the Gazette has identified at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/kovalev/
8279 + 6806 for a total of 14,085 and counting.
Cheers, Georges

Here is the winning line up for upcoming season. Koivu will lead this team with the 3 new additions who shows grit and determination on winning. Koivu never ever had players that would go to the net like he did on a regular basis. IMHO, This is the first time I seen in along while that this team do not have very many perimeter players in this lineup for upcoming season. Koivu will make a difference.
Cammalleri Gomez Gionta
Pacioretty Koivu Latendresse
A.Kostitsyn Plekanec S.Kostitsyn
Stewart Lapierre Laraque
Spares: Metropolit and D'Agostini
I agree.Keep SAKU As long as we are cleaning house .Get rid of the Kostisyns. They can go bar hopping somewhere else.
Latendresse too.He is lazy and skates like a 70 yr old.
Did I mention no matter who we sign if there isnt a good goalie in the nets we wont win.
Price cant stop a beachball. Josh Harding (backup MN) almost has the same stats as Backstrum.Go get him bob!of course he wont he thinks Price is the best thing since sliced bread.Another season of agony in the nets!
If I were Halek,i would ask for a trade.he actually has talent .he deserves to play.I feel bad for him.
I rather see em sign Francois Beauchemin, then Kovy or Saku!!!!!!!
And Amen (church done for today)
Good thing we only have 1 GM. Get over it people, this is your new team.
Thats your oppinion.I suppose you think Price is the best thing since sliced bread, too.
Im not trying to be rude, but maybe Saku has touched us (I dont mean physically!) in ways that you are lucky enough ,you didnt need him. Classy guys like that are hard to replace.
Kovy ,I dont care!
Amen
I signed both petitions. Why? Because I want at least one of our familiar heroes back. I would prefer Kovy, but I'll also be excited to have Koivu back as well.
Your "heroes?"
Are you 9?
Yes, heroes. As in I've been watching Koivu since I was in elementary school and Kovy since high school. So yes, heroes. You don't have to be condescending to make a point.
Note you are absolutely grandfathered in because of your age. If they were your heroes as a kid, that's fine.
My life as a hockey-watching "kid" ended when Guy Lafleur was shunted into retirement. He was (to me anyway) still the fastest skater on the ice, had the hardest shot and still had the most magnetism. I watched his final game as a Hab in Vancouver, and he was easily the best player on the ice. But he went nearly 30 games without a goal and was obviously pressing.
He absolutely chafed under Lemaire's system and his freelancing skills that served him so well his entire career were shackled. Plus, he was Guy Lafleur. Rather than accept being a fourth-line player, he retired. As much as I'm still sour with Lemaire (thus understanding the hero worship as a kid thing) and Savard for refusing to trade him (rumours had Buffalo offering Perrault and Edmonton offering Kurri) and then having him on the protected list for years, his departure in the end benefitted the team.
His departure allowed a new group (plus a couple of holdovers in Gainey and Robinson) take charge, and the '86 Cup followed in short order.
Much to my surprise, when he came back with another team, I was thrilled. Why? Because I could unabashedly cheer for my childhood hero, and it had no bearing whatsover on the team that I still loved most of all. It was actually outstanding to simply be able to check the scoresheet and look for "Lafleur" and not give a rat's behind if his team won or not.
So I can offer this advice to you Koivu and Kovy lovers - they can still be your favourite players. You can still cheer wildly for their every goal. And the team that should have your undivided loyalties can move forward and try to win a Stanley Cup. It's time to move on.
Good for you.You know you have to ignore shallow people. They dont know what its like to have Cancer and fight your way back to play game 80.To me that is pretty darn heroic too.My brother had the same Cancer .Good for you standing up for yourself.
Saku is aslo heroic for taking up the cause of his foundation. He didnt have to do that ,and lets hope the person who insulted you, doesnt need that money someday!
And finally on the Ice,always a gentleman ,playing his heart out, still almost a point a game player.Gee I wonder if that person who insulted you wonders why Saku has 4 contract offers, and 5 other teams interested in him.Do you think they might think he is something special too!!!!!
I thought so!
Keep believing in you Hero !
Enjoy your summer,
Ifyour a fan of Price though-lets so not go there ,he is def not my hero.He is prob the other guys type though!
Koivu the man is definitely heroic and inspirational. But he's not an elite player, and isn't going to miraculously start improving in his mid-30s.
All good things come to an end.
Re: Price
There's players I like and players I looked up to as a child. I looked up to Koivu & Kovy [among others like Yzerman]. I just like Price as a player.
From the guy with the 70s hockey card for an avatar ;-)
PS: I should talk.
Interesting that more people want Kovy back (about 5,000) than Koivu (2,000).
If you want to bring somebody back to be the captain of this team, the only other consideration I would have is Schneider, not Kovalev, not Koivu.
Alex Kovalev(l'artiste) is a goal scorer who draws a lot of attention but everyone here is forgetting one thing. There is no fit for him on this team
Cammalleri Gomez Gionta
A.Kostitsyn Plekanec S.Kostitsyn
Pacioretty Lapierre Latendresse
Stewart Metropolit Laraque
Be ready for the forward lineup to look like that because the Kostitsyns will be told to grow up or get out under Martin. Also, I can't believe that people don't think there's a new captain here. MAXIM LAPIERRE and I have a feeling that when his time is up he may have a ring or two on his hand. He is a Godsent that IS ready and willing to lead this team. He questions the character of everyone in the room, he leads by example, he gets in your face. In short, he is everything that you want a captain to be. Your captain should not be a lazy backchecker, should not have to be sent home, should not give up on plays in double overtime of playoff games and should not worry more about their hair than the result after three periods.
Now as for Saku Koivu, I also was in tears on the night of his return from his battle with cancer. However, his battle with cancer and his strong character for coming back from it doesn't mean that he has been a great captain. The kids were out of control last year, he needed to step up and didn't. The coach wasn't communicating with the players, he could have adressed it. The "star" player wasn't performing, he was at odds with him instead of rallying around him to try making him better. More than size in the middle, more than a nasty defenseman, more than an experienced backup goaltender, this team needed new leadership and is able to look from within to find it because it has been there for two years slapping them in the face. Max Lapierre will be a great captain for this team for years to come and WANTS to be here.
Switch Pleks and Sergei for Lang and Kovy, and look out!
Heck, even if Lang couldn't go due to his injury, Sign Kovy and have the team look like this:
A. Kostitsyn Gomez Gionta
Pacioretty Cammalleri Kovalev
S. Kostitsyn Lapierre Latendresse
Laraque/Stewart Metropolit D'Agostini
And for the record, I could care less if Kovy is the Captain. That's for the guys in the room to decide. I just want his talent on the ice.
The lineup with Kovy looks worse!
You hate Kovy, we all get it. It is your right to love/hate whomever you please. But you can't tell me that the line-up with S.Kost is better than that with Kovy. Kovy is better than S.Kost is every way except potential. Points, leadership, discipline [neither are great there but you can't deny Sergei took way too many stupid retaliatory penalties last year], defensive ability [again, neither are great, but Kovy can at least kill penalties], and overall aweseomeness. The line-up with Kovy is absolutely better than the one without.
At least Sergei makes an honest effort. He is much younger than Kovy and will develope into a fine hockey player. Let Sergei learn the game and someday he will be just as good as Kovy. Its time for the old man to move on.
Are you telling me that the Habs would be a more fearsome team with Sergei in the lineup instead of Kovalev? Because I'm pretty sure that there would be 29 other NHL teams that would disagree with you, Teacher.
For 82 games yes it would be more fearsome.
If we were talking about 22 random games picked, maybe Kovalev in there would be more fearsome, but even then I doubt it. ;)
Addition by subtraction I say.
Pretty tough for Sergei to be more fearsome when he's skating in the AHL...
;)
Why ain't Kovy not pick up yet? You want to know the answer? Take a guess?
My "guess" is that he's not actually on the market, or at the very least not seeking employment with another team, looking to return to the Habs.
Bob already offered him a contract, so he'd obviously like him to return. The question now is whether or not they could work out a contract that would be cap-friendly and still allow them to consider another defenseman.
Switch Sergei for the Artiste and I'm in, baby!
Peace Out

I see your point about Lapierre and agree that he has got that special something that could make him a captain. One day. Last season was a step in the right direction for him as he began to come into his own as a player but I think he needs a bit more to go before he earns that coveted position. However, I do agree that he is an often overlooked player who could captain this team somewhere down the line.
I definately respect and understand that opinion because it is said quite a bit. However, the alternatives do bother me. I'm very fearful of what direction the group might take under Andrei Markov's leadership(or lack of). I really don't see it anywhere else on the roster, I didn't mention in my prior post but I don't really see a fit on this team for Roman Hamrlik either. As soon as Gill and Spacek were signed I posted on here that I believed he would be dealt possibly with Plekanec. I've kind of changed my tune on Plek though because I think that management will see that he has great potential under a coach like Martin, huge upside with his skill set at both ends of the ice. Getting back to my point, I read by Dave Pagnotta I believe that he finds it hightly doubtful that Roman would be traded because of his NTC. I found it funny considering Ryan Smyth getting dealt, Heatley willing or maybe not to waive his. The NTC is a tool for a player to control where they get traded and not whether or not it happens. Anyway, I'm rambling, but to sum up I feel that Max's personality traits and character make him the prime suspect for next years' captain and that the lack of leadership in the room will dictate that he gets the "c".
Dont worry about rambling i do it all the time.
i dont know Markov,I do know he plays his heart out! I think Gainey should offer him the C,but the way he has been acting(no class) it wouldnt surprise me if he offers it to his under achiever protected cant stop a beachball PRICE!
Come to think of it, he speaks french and I'm guessing his english isnt terrible although I've never heard it. But the language factor alone is going to play a big factor for sure. I think no matter what Markov is going to get the nod just out of respect but I think he will decline because he was never comfortable in the spotlight. I know already that Lapierre doesnt have the same respect around the league that Koivu had but the question would be if he can get his team to rally around him.
It's hard to say at this point but they are the two likely candidates. I'm still holding out hope that Hamrlik & Maxwell get packaged for a something like a 2nd round pick, that will give the team around $7 million for the team to play with or keep in the bank. I'm happy with Weber and O'byrne getting into the lineup as regulars this year because I don't expect the team to go on a deep run right away anyway. I'm expecting big things in 2010-2011. It's going to be a contract year for a lot of the players again and will make or break a lot of their careers.
Not trying to get anyone's hopes up - but was thinking about Kovy & then I was thinking about the Captaincy.
At the end of the day on July 1st - a reporter asked Gainey a question as to whom would be the next Captain, Gainey replied "Well I am meeting with the Head Coach on the weekend, we will sit down & determine that"
The people who want Kovalev back could easily read it as follows:
Kovalev WANTS to come back, Gainey is not against it, but wants to talk to Jacques Martin FIRST. IE: "Can you fit Kovalev into your system Jacques ?"
If Kovalev is signed, I sort of expect Pleks & Halak traded for a more mature backup goalie for Price & a prospect. Freeing up a bit of cap space (just enough) to offer Kovy a one or two year contract.
Kovy on this new team would succeed. & it is quite interesting when you think about it (Eklund rumours aside)
Reading media reports -- Koivu has been listed as on the verge with many teams, Kovy... not so much. Could Kovy just be waiting on Bob & Jacques to talk about it ?
It seems quite clear this makeover is about eliminating past negative influences, and IF Jacques thinks Kovy would be a reminder of this past season. Kovy is gone. IF however Jacques thinks he can use Kovy effectively... without disreupting the team. Kovy COULD return...
If Kovalev is asked to come back and not Saku.Im seling(legally back to the other 1/2 who own tkts in the red with me in the last 22 yrs) Im not spending 132$ a tkt to go see a game.
Im keeping my share for my son one day.
But it was torture enough to see Price not being able to stop a beachball and then whine about it at the end of the year.
Now that Bob "publically " babied him, there is no way price is going to come back with a different attitude. Why should .he has "Bob" in his pocket.
Thanks for a great 100th anniverary Bob.!You really did a great job.Esp when you fired Carbo.Yo really "changed things on the ice level"as you put it.
Martin has been coach for weeks now. You don't think he and Gainey had these discussions prior to the draft and free agency?
I didn't make it up - just repeating what was said.
I think up to July 1st - Kovey was offered a contract says the Habs wanted him in the mix if they could.
Koivu - was not offered a contract - I think the message was clear ...
Were ever Koivu's decides to go to, He will have more points tnat Kovalev. You can put that in the bank. Kovalev will get most of his points on PP. Koivu will earn his.
Too bad Saku doesnt have an offer (that we know of) From the Bruins.never thought I would
say this but i go go for that team. Recchi,(another bad mistake from the habs),Begin,Thomas (yes,I was impressed at the NHL awards and he is actually a goalie,we dont have one!
You forgot about Ryder of all people.
He would be a disaster as captain.
I would even say that as captain, the Artiste would so DOMINATE the rest of the league that he would warrant the designation of a Natural Catastrophe, nevermind a disaster.
Totally agree with the Bard.
Peace Out

some posters have been concerned for lack of a captain. but, I believe Gomez will fill those shoes soon enough. even if it's not him, the team will decide on their captain in due time. someone will rise to the occasion.
I'm ready for Kovy to depart. No need for hot/cold prima-donnas, no matter how much talent he holds.
Koivu, however, is another story. He should retire a Hab.
I agree fully!!!! You got my recommendation. You can count me in as well.
Saku Koivu is the team. He is their heart and soul and regardless of his skill and talent is the one guy that has made this team something special. He has literally bled for the team and should be the only captain of the Habs until he is ready to retire.
Completely agree, I have more respect than words can say for what Saku does for and gives to this club. In an era where a player displaying club loyalty is rare and if he wishes it, let him retire a Hab.
Well said. Couldn't agree more.
...........
"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high."
I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.
SPOT ON!!!! HE DESERVES TO BE A LIFETIME HABS PLAYER. STILL GOOD FOR 2-4 YEARS AS A 2ND OR 3RD LINE CENTRE. SAKU!!! SAKU!!! GO HABS GO!!!
We'll read your stuff if you don't yell, promise.
Peace Out

What if Markov phoned Gainey and asked him to resign Koivu. Told him that the team needs leadership and he is the one to provide it... would Gainey listen? Maybe...
Markov ... make the call ! :)
I nominate Carey Price as the next Habs Captain!!!!!
:-)
I don't recognize the team anymore. A very weird feeling. Unhappy with the trade like most here. Only silver lining is that I'll be able to watch the new Habs 1st round choice Louis Leblanc. Maybe I'll see him at the gym too!
Saku is the heart of the team and no one gives more effort than anyone does, and loves the city and went through a lot here. I can't see him being replaced in that role. That's why I think he should stay.
I don't see why anyone would want Kovalev before Koivu...Yes Kovalev is a heck of a player when he wants to be, but there are also too many times he tries to do everything himself and seems to put himself at times ahead of the team....While Koivu always put the team first and did EVERYTHING possible for the Habs franchise, I just wish Gainey would have done more trade wise and free agent wise while Koivu was still here.....As for what was said earlier, I totally agree, it was time for a change, we have become alot younger, and we brought in 5 Stanley Cup rings with Gomez and Giontas 2 Stanley Cup wins while with New Jersey and Hal Gills Stanley Cup win with Pittsburgh
it's time to turn the page.
I want to start a petition to bring Bertuzzi to the team. He's cheap and has the size we lack up front. Plus he's still getting a nice amount of points.Bertuzzi !!!
I had to suffer watching the big ugly lug here in Calgary. That was bad enough. Seeing him in a CH would cause the Rocket to turn in his grave and for me to puke.
I talked to his sister at baseball last night and she said it looks like it will either be tampa or washington unless someone else steps in with an offer. He is leaning towards the caps for the obvious reasons.
A man who viciously and premeditatively attacks another player FROM BEHIND in such a horrific manner will NEVER represent the Montreal Canadiens.
We've THROWN players OUT for much less; you wanna bring the worst of the lot IN?
Hah! Ridiculous.
Go back to Toranna; they like guys like you over there.
Peace Out

I want both of them back. But I won't sign a petition in favor of bringing Kovy back with the "C". I'd sign to bring him back...but I can't sign it the way it is written. I'd love to have Saku back. In any capacity.
...........
"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high."
I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.
I'd sure rather have the Artiste here without the C than somewhere else with it.
Of course if I get both? Double Hooray! But priorities first. Re-sign the Artiste.
Now. So I can get a good night's sleep and not suddenly wake up with wild eyes, drenched in sweat, clutching my Kovy squeezie-doll and gnawing on my Kovy-bear's fluffy ear.
Peace Out

Your man-crush aside, how would you envision the year playing out for Kovalev, in Martin's system, perhaps without Papa Bob to offer him a soother when he has a mid-season tantrum...
Don't forget that Martin has coached teams that have led the league in scoring. I highly doubt that he would try to 'over system" Kovalev. Martin's not a stupid man.
LOL! I could agree with all of that Bugsy. And I liked your comment above about Bertuzzi. Again, agreed.
...........
"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high."
I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.
I'll set a few mild fires here and there if Kovy ain't re-signed but the firefighters should easily contain them and I doubt anyone will get seriously hurt.
But if Bertuzzi had ever been signed?
Oh man... I would've unleashed hell on this city that would've made Heath Ledger look like Strawberry Shortcake.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-JPMFuHu6w let's not forget kovy's samson-like ability
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQDpr2Msp78&feature=related
- thanks for everything, saku koivu.
Kinda made me miss kovy a bit
Maybe Gainey can stay....maybe? Komisarek is dead to me
Leadership is the abilty to influence others to achieve organizational goals. Do those that wish kovy to be captain believe he has the capacity to do so? Sure he is incredibly talented, but only last week he was offered a two year contract by the Habs, then turned around and used it as leverage against the team?
Koivu on the other hand fits the definition perfectly, but the Habs decided to go in a different direction probably because he wanted a longer term contract than the Habs were willing to give. He will be missed and hard to replace.
"... then turned around and used it as leverage against the team"
Why are people holding that against him? He's a free agent, and guess what? EVERY player agent worth his cut does the exact same thing: "We've got your offer, but we've also been contacted by X team that might be able to go you one better."
It's called "bargaining". Why should Kovy automatically accept whatever Bob originally offered?
after saying he'd love to play in Mtl for the rest of his days and stating his great love for the city he gets a decent offer and uses it for leverage against the team he is so-called "in love with". Total prima-donna!!! I hold it against him. It might be different if the Habs offered him table scraps, but...
Peace Out

a natural leader doesn't get benched for not giving his all....saku left it on the ice every game!!!
Kovalev a leader? Come on. He's a lot of things, but a leader he ain't. Kovalev couldn't lead a baby and neither could he be led by God.
Thta's ridiculous. One only had to look at the team's performance and cohesion when Kovy wore the"C" while Koivu was on the IR. The truth is he was grabbing the team by the horns and they followed, and then when Koivu came back it sucked the wind out of everybody.
I wanted Kovy to return, and for the sake of truly redefining the team Koivu must not, at least not as captain. For all you people who think he should retire a Hab, fair enough. He shoudn't be captain anymore though if he returns. He never should've been given that "C" in the 1st place, at least not so soon in his career. Maurice Richard was a Hab for 2 decades almost until he was voted in as captain.
I dont see how KOIVU sucked the wind out of everybody!Gainey did a good job when he fire Carbo ,and won what a hanful of games with his sad excuse of a goalie Price.(If I were halek i wouldask for a trade,he has talent and its wasted here,he wont get to play, while Price is trying to stop a beachball)
Now Kovalev on the other hand is the player i love to love and love ot hate.DRAMA.He loves it.
On the Friday before the All star game he said"Im going for the MVP. And he did. Then he took a two month vacation.(except he was there) more rumours from the Russian papers,Drama ect)Funny he didnt even get invited to play for Team Russia im May.
There is no doubt that Kovalev has skill.Nobody can score the type of goals he scores.Thats about all I can say about him.
Koivu. He is amost a point a game player.Class, courage, talent, gives back to the Community like no other, never complains,is a leader.(on and off the ice) need i go on!
Are you for real? Who should have replace him during his 13 years in Montreal.
saku mulling over options such as going to Montreal for 1 year for 3.5m ..........if you want to believe eklund.
A short Koivu memory, as he was one of my favorites even though I agree with Bob's moves this week. The only Boston-Habs game I've ever been to was opening night in Boston a few years ago. The Bruins handed out little plastic Stanley Cups, probably to remind the B's fans what it looks like. Tie game late in the third, B's fans all around me in the nose bleeds cheering and with 10 seconds or so left, Saku scored to give the Habs the lead. Of course the Ice was then rained upon by all these plastic Stanley Cups. The game was delayed about 10 minutes to play the last 4-5 seconds. I now have one of the few surviving cups on my bookshelf. Good luck Saku, may you be happy where ever you land.
Hate to burst your Saku memory but it was Ryder who scored that goal not Saku.
See how unreliable memory is? I was certain it was Saku. Oh well, still got the plastic cup.
I want Koivu back... but do I really need to donate $2 to ??? to sign the petition?
no. But the petition site wants to make money. By the time you get to that point your signature is already accounted for so you can just hit back or close or www.habsinsideout.com or whatever.
Accept change..It's a good thing..We have new heroes to cheer for..
