Mike Cichy this past season with the Indiana Ice.

Here's a nice piece by Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News on USHL Indiana Ice forward Mike Cichy, a seventh-round draft pick (199th overall) of the Canadiens last weekend.
Not everyone has the red carpet rolled out for them à la Tavares, Hedman or Duchene. Here's the story of a kid who dreams of the NHL, and comes to Montreal now as one of 40 players who will take part in next week's development camp.
Courtesy of The Pipeline Show, hosted weekly by Guy Flaming and Dean Millard on Team 1260 AM in Edmonton, here's audio of a May 19 radio interview with Cichy, in which he talks about his season, being named the Clark Cup Playoff MVP, and what
lies ahead for his hockey career. Little did he know that future would include a CH.
Gomez Cammalerri Gionta
GCG
Go Canadiens Go line...
?
I would think that would make for a very big Free Agent draw.
Ok.. here it is: We need another D man... I vote Kurtis Foster D UFA (previously MIN) Right hand shot, has size, defensive awareness and offensive upside. He could come cheaply as he sat out most of last year nursing a broken leg, and will be looking to impress and get back on track on his rising NHL career.

I would suggest having his quick release with a playmaking centre like Gomez.. unless past chemistry with Plekanec can be re-kindled... Wouldn't Kovalev look great back with AK46 and Pleky? (first line power against second line Defence) :)
There is still time...
IS - when do we give our young players a chance to get NHL experience? Guys like Weber and O'Byrne need a full year of regular ice time to show what they can do. If we bring in another experienced guy, it will just mean that they will stagnate.
Agree with Steve on this. I do not understand the outcry for another D, unless it’s a true #2, which without moving payroll, would not make sense. As it stands O’Byrne and Weber make a fine #6/7 combo. Moving forward both these players are low cost pieces that offer high upside. I think a lot of people are losing sight of the upside of O’Byrne; his issues have more to do with coaching than abilities. Players with his size and skating do not come around often; if he is properly coached he can become a #3/4 D man.
I agree about giving the kids a chance, and that O'byrne still has upside. Everyone seems to forget how bad most young defencemen are.
And IS, If we did go after another dman, it had better be Foster or Mara. Both are exactly the kind of players I think we could use and personally would have preferred them to Gill. But unless we move Hammer to open up a place, I'd rather we let Weber and O'byrne play in the final spot
ok.. sorry.. the stats breakdown format didn't carry over to the posting... see link for details...
Go New Habs!
Thanks for pointing out typo's,thats what you get when you give a construction worker a keyboard....What I was trying to convey was the Tiger Prawn phrasing over two small shrimps. After all they may be a smaller forward type player but they have proved in the past to have a tiger in the tank athleticism.
Fyi, the joke's not funny when you have to explain it.

I'd call them pirahnas.
I can see the headlines now should we beat San Jose next season. "Habs seafood line takes a bite out of the Sharks." (or if your tag holds, "Habs Pirahnas devour Sharks")
By contrast if San Jose wins. Sharks gobble up Habs seafood line!
Or "Sharks Devour Habs Seafood Line."
Sorry... having trouble with my optimism these days.
~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!
Or how about this for a headline: "Montreal makes sure there's no seafood in Boston's chowder today"
Hahaha
What about, Seafood line Gill-nets CHARA?
Cammalrri and two Tiger Prawns from now on boy's
That joke is kind of running it's course. And it's boys...not boy's. I'm just saying something about the spelling cause people seem to make that mistake often and I can't take it anymore. Lol.
His name is spelled it's Cammalleri (Calamari to get the joke right) and tiger prawns should not be capitalized.

The seafood line! You know for a fact that HIO is influential. This is one of the best sports forums around. Knowledgeable fans with a great sense of humour. Like I said earlier, we're a bunch of frustrated stand-up comics! I am gonna miss all your Kovy avatars.

Hopefully that petition at the Bell Centre works...Cause I still have plenty more in stock.

There's no doubt that Kovalev would done the "C" if he were to come back AND I think, as childish as that sounds, he would rally his players and play better himself. Not to mention you're talking about two concrete scoring lines and TWO major power-play lines. Add a guy like Boucher on the point also and you're going to crack some skulls. Honestly, Lats, Chips, Plek are all replaceable. I hate saying stuff like that but it's the truth.
Right, Darth? If we're to stay true to this proper grammar stuff?

Honest mistake. Thanks for trolling me on this one, Bugs.
Well, Gainey listened to the fans when it came to drafting Louis Leblanc, let's not kid ourselves. Everyone wanted a French-Canadian and Gainey picked the best one available. I do think, however, that having Kovalev back would solidify two legitimate scoring lines. With this "rally" maybe Gainey will succomb to the fans' pressure once more...
I know you want to take credit for that, but he was ranked higher than 18th so it was an obvious choice that I think Timmons and Gainey would have figured out without the fans or press.
I'm not taking credit for anything. I'm always about grabbing the best player available and one that suits the needs of your team. I was actually hoping for Peter Holland or Jordan Caron since I had no clue about Louis Leblanc. Am I satisfied about Leblanc as of this moment? Yes, but only after doing some research on him. Also, when asked about wanting to please the fans Gainey's body language and choice of words highly indicated that they were doing it to please the fans aswell. Like I said though, happy about the pick. I just think Caron would've brought some nastyness we sorely needed. I'm happy about our supposed "sea food line" because all the other teams are going to take penalties trying to get these guys out of the net area by giving head shots, hooking, etc. Our PP looks like it's going to be VERY nasty and unforgiving this year.
Nazem Kadri. THAT woulda been a dream pickup for this city.
But friggin Toranna...

Sorry, didn't mean you specifically, just fans in general. I am very optimistic about the coming season (but I always am at this point in the season!)
Over the past number of years we have drafted the best players available and they have been developing on the farm in preparation for this new day. It is time to see the fruits of our labor. Time to start bringing them up to the big time as they season as true pro's.
All 40 of them will be on the ice tomorrow trying to earn a spot on the roster.
Good post Ian.I agree to that.
The shock is over and the fog has lifted except in Stoouiville so who do you think will be our "go to" guy next season?
it hasn't changed for me, andrei markov
"go to score"
"go to stop them from scoring"
he can do both.
- thanks for everything, saku koivu.
I agree.
Scorers can't score if the guys in back don't get the puck moved out of our end.
I would say Price, but his confidence level will depend on the teamwork in front of him.

Cammaleri, hands down.
I think these guys are going to bring some fun back to the rink.
A.Kost should take the next step too.
I hope you mean FUN as in getting past game 6 of round 2 in the playoffs FUN, cuz if you mean FUN as fascinating set-ups and beautiful goals FUN, I personally think that none of'em could give us MORE fun than one particular player who's hours away from being lost forever.
Consider that it wasn't the end of the lockout or Gillett's stellar marketing campaign that created all this modern hoopla surrounding the Boys. No, no, no, that was KOVALEV. C'mon. After his smackdown in Beantown when called out by Souray, THAT'S when pandemonium erupted in this city. THAT'S when "Gillett's stellar marketing campaign" really got going, wouldn't you say? End of the lockout, my ass, it was all Kovy.
We better get past the second round in a hurry afore I start grumblin... ...fun, he says...
Peace Out

Fun, as in loose players enjoying the game, winning games, standing up for each other, camera shoots of the bench that show animated individuals who believe in EACH OTHER. This, as opposed to brooding dark clouds of disengagement and a sense that they are waiting for the 'one' to get it done. You know a healthy team atmosphere kind of thing. Instead of an up and down roller coaster of melancholy and clenched teeth.
That kind of fun, Bugsy.
Well, I don't see how the "atmosphere" will have us as enthralled as eletrifying ziggin and zaggin as well as sonic boom wristers and reason-defying vision. Not to mention that there ain't a Mensch in sight.
THIS fun is gonna get us past game 6 of the 2nd round? Alright, we'll see. Winds of change, I was for it; can't be against it now.
But don't sell me the "fun" angle just yet, please. Let's go Gomez. Let's go Gio. Let's go Cammy. Ok, I'm in, I'll follow. But more fun than Kovy? Please. Nothing fun about the Devils except the winnin. So let's get winnin. Quick. Third round of the playoffs. Quick. Or else, there was NO point in dumping the most fascinating player on the club since Lafleur.
Peace Out

Bugs, the past 16 years have not been fun, with a brief exception of the year before last and even that become not fun very quickly in April. Winning is fun regardless of the style, losing is not fun regardless of how pretty we are doing it.
But here, Ruggie, the subject was "fun." And Richer might've scored more than Kovy, but Kovy is MORE fun.
No?

Now who's more fun, Kovy or Richer?
Kovy by a flippin landslide, that's who.

It appears neither Koivu nor Kovalev are returning.
http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=...
Koivu:
“I had good conversation with Saku on Wednesday morning and I thanked him for everything. He was tremendous for us for a very long time, a special player,” said Gainey. “I have great memories of his time here and Saku was a great player for us. The time came for us as an organization to move on, create a new team with a new identity.”
Kovalev:
“Both sides were interested in having Alex come back to Montreal, but we couldn’t come to terms in time,” said Gainey who had to move quickly as players were being snatched up in a hurry. “As it stands now, this would mark the end for Alex with the Canadiens.”
The Kovalev quote makes it seem still a possibility. And both of these quotes are old now... things change. Though I do think neither will be back, I don't see who the new leadership is, or why either couldn't play a strong 2nd line roll now that we have a potential 18 MILLION dollar forward line. Wow! That's more expensive than the Pens or Caps or Wings first line! As ridiculous as that is.
~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!
Everything a possible, well lots at any rate. I think BG is preparing us for the worst in advance.
As for the Pens top line, we didn't have the luxury of having drafted two #1 and two #2 draft picks over the course of 4 seasons no less. Malkin and Crosby when they reach free agency will command top dollar, a sum which could put both those players at about 9 million each *ugh* per season.
both crosby and malkin earn $8.7 million/yr - today
--I will die a delirious fan and never apologize for it!--
You're right. BG also said he's going after a 'big center', so you can't always take what he says on face value.
And yes, the Pens had the advantage of drafting high - of course they did - but the idea is to lock up players to long contracts at a BARGAIN, not long contracts at a PREMIUM. BG seems to have missed that course in GM school.
~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!
When you go fishing for the biggest fish Rob, you don't always get it. You don't throw the smaller tastier fish away or you go hungry.
We are going to be fine and exciting this year, Bob did a great job so far with our organisation I believe.
I hope you're right Ian. You often are... but no one's perfect eh. Not even Bob. :(
~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!
Ian, I hope the injuries don't ply up like last season. If it does, Cap issue will come into play. Yikes?????
Pile
"BG seems to have missed that course in GM school."
I guess you forgot about the Markov signing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Fans are great, but the quickest way to start losing is to listen to them." - Sam Pollock
You know, I think that a lot of what is going on in the new NHL with the CBA and salary cap is trial and error. I think all GMs are in the same boat. Hopefully Gainey is a quick learner.
Here is the winning line up for upcoming season. Koivu will lead this team with the 3 new additions who shows grit and determination on winning. Koivu never ever had players that would go to the net like he did on a regular basis. IMHO, This is the first time I seen in along while that this team do not have very many perimeter players in this lineup for upcoming season. Koivu will make a difference.
Cammalleri Gomez Gionta
Pacioretty Koivu Latendresse
A.Kostitsyn Plekanec S.Kostitsyn
Stewart Lapierre Laraque
Spares: Metropolit and D'Agostini
Unless you're going to get Koivu to sign for $2 million, your lineup won't fit under the cap.
Mike Cammalleri - Scott Gomez - Brian Gionta
Sergei Kostitsyn - Tomas Plekanec - Andrei Kostitsyn
Guillaume Latendresse - Maxim Lapierre - Max Pacioretty/Matt D'Agostini
Georges Laraque - Glen Metropolit - Gregory Stewart
Try working with the actual roster!
BG made Qaulifying offers to Tomas Plekanec, Guillaume Latendresse, Max Pacioretty, Matt D'Agostini, Gregory Stewart and Kyle Chipchura. That doesn't mean they will sign a new contract. Maybe they all want to move on as well? Time will tell who signs?
I am just saying that Koivu isn't signed and likely wont be. I was using the roster as is listed on the Habs official web site. Who knows if even there isn't going to be a trade or two in the works let alone another FA signing. As it stands I think it's best to not speculate on potential or could be players and work with what we got.
I personally believe however that Martin will turn A Kost into the next Marian Hossa, unless of course they trade him, but I don't think they will. Watch him score 40 goals next season.

Ya! The Habs Rule!
He has a life, dude, he entertains us with his insight.
Sh#tting on Habs seems to have become a favourite pass time of the NHL punditry lately, especially of those based in tarranna or new yawk. What i like is that in several of these 'analysis' the conclusion is that the Habs took a sideways step over the last few days and are essentially only as good as last year's team after all the changes. Well... many of these same pundits were picking the Habs to finish first and be serious contenders for the Cup last year.
So, if this team is as good on paper as last year's and if the room has been cleared of a whole lot of putrid, stale air... what does that say for our chances of having a solid season this year?
If the chemical implosion of last year's squad is not repeated, and great measures have been taken to avoid that, then maybe this year's team, that is apparently no better than last year's team, can actually play up to the expectations of last year's team.
The other encouraging thing is that the last time these jokers wrote this team off(2 years ago) we actually finished first in the east.
really good points 2cents. i hadn't thought of it that way:lateral move=cup contenders. but of course hindsight is 20/20 for the "experts" so they predict we will suck, be too small etc. its like when mcguire was all over the penguins getting hossa, saying that deal would set the franchise back for many years, and low and behold they win the cup the very next year. has anybody heard his explaination for that? just curious cause i havn't.
Eric - the replacement players are what they are - Gainey's best attempt at spending our surplus cap money. When it's all said and done, our real future will rest with the improvment of our young players such as Price, MaxPac, and the K brothers. As well, with McDonagh gone, there is added pressure on Weber and Subban to become stars on the blueline (in a few years).
Oh and we shouldn't ignore the fact that Cammaleri just turned a mere 27 not even a month ago. Cammalleri is no slouch. I remember quite well last year when Calgary moved Tanguay freeing up room to add him. Everyone was unnaimous in saying they upgraded themselves with that move. Steve, by the age of 26 this guy has established himself as a more consistent scorer than any of the players who are leaving.
With regard to our 27 and older group, these moves were sideways at worst, and if Gomez and Gionta rediscover their magic they will represent a step up. Combine that with the potential for the group you identified to collectively take their next steps, we should be careful to not be overly blasse about the coming year's prospects.
As I tried to say above, if these moves do end up being only sideways, we are back to where we were at the start of last year. And if I remember right you and many others were pretty optimistic then. Add to that the fact that the young core has a lot more lessons under their belts and things could be interesting. Despite some portrayals here, this ain't Sergei Samsonov and/or Donald Audette.
At the start of last year we wanted more grit, check... another puck mover on D, check... we don't have the big stud centre, it's true, but we have replaced a fading(sorry Saku) 5'10" one with a 5'11" one who is in his prime and has a slightly better points per game record, despite an off year.
I think we still need one more forward, preferably one with some size, preferably at centre, who can score 15 goals or so and were ready to see what can happen.
Pleks and a 1st for Jordan Stall or Pleks for Zubrus straight up. Then let's role. I wannna see this team play.
Nice points, and I agree about Stall. I know we don't know 99% of what's going on and what's possible, but I would love for Bob to make a play for him. Pleks and 1st or maybe dagger and a 3rd instead of the 1st.
Cammy-Gomez-Gionta
AK-Stall-SK
Lats-Laps-Patches
Stewart-Metro/chips-Laraque
I would be very confident with that lineup.
Steve, Our real future, and Gainey's, always did hinge on that group.
(Oh, and I wouldn't write Fisher off yet either. He's a big tall lanky boy and though we often say around here that big tall D take a while to develop, we seldom show the patience necessary to allow that to happen.)
Eric - So True, we are the sideway Habs and younger.
Habs were given a B, if I remember correctly. We had "wasted our money by moving laterally". The ISLANDERS got a B+ for their UFA market acumen.
They picked up Roloson.
Lemme repeat that: They picked up Roloson, the end. B+.
While I have no problem with Joe or Shmoe giving his opinion, what it showed me again is that the Mtl Canadiens are NOT judged as any'ole hockey club. We're judged as a CHAMPION hockey club.
And I gotta say, for the last 16 years, they're right on the money. For Champions of the World, in the last 16 years, we've sucked rather badly.
Everyone who isn't the Habs or Habfans delights in bringing us down because you can ONLY BRING DOWN what is over you.
I will add this: however brilliant Gainey was with gettin Cammy and especially Gionta cuz of the Gomez trade, the Yanks STILL got the better of that deal and they are completely entitled to be having a chuckle at our expense. As for Toranna, if they win 35 games, I'll walk around my block naked. Grabby'd better have a hell of a year cuz...ouch, they are going to suck lemons.
Rotten lemons.
Peace Out

I stopped giving a crap what these people say long ago. No matter what the habs do they suck, and yet remember last year? When it was playoff time and we exited round 1? All the sudden TSN was saying how they might go all the way.....when month before they had completely ignored them.
I would LOVE to see the habs go far with this new team just to prove all the analysts wrong.
Man, I was just thinking the same thing.
This article from Newsday has the Rangers, after boosting their new additions, in tough with 5 maybe 6 other teams. Geuss who's in the list?
"The Rangers face formidable challenges in the East from the Stanley Cup champion Penguins, the ever-improving Capitals, the muscled-up Flyers, the well-coached Bruins and re-engineered Canadiens and maybe even Tampa."
This is NOTHING to what they used to say about Daigle. Yeah, yeah, everyone is fantastic, everyone is great, everyone skates like the wind and shoots like the Navy Seals. But I've yet to read a scouting report that says "Can't skate. Can't shoot. Can't check. Can't block. Can't play." How odd is that?
Let's wait just a tad, shall we? At least til he steps on Hamilton ice before squealing like Jackson fans, whaddaya say?Everyone's a superhero and then, they're given away to New York, so forgive me if I don't hold him to Kovy ideals just yet.

The 40 players that will be in camp on Monday,---( 25 forwards and 11 are under contract. )--- (10 Defence men and 3 are under contract.)--- ( 5 goaltenders and 1 is under contract)
These kids have a wonderful opportunity to fill many holes on the Habs roster and to join the Hamilton Bulldogs roster. Both teams have new coaching staffs and all eyes will be turned on high beam to see what these kids can do.
Over the past years we have drafted these kids and they have earned the right to show their development for the next week to the new coaching staff and management. There will be some great competition to view as they all try to earn their spot in the organisation.
Hope to see some of you people there.
Who would wanna miss such an opportunity?
He played with a good friend of mine last year who tells me this kid is a hell of a player. Despite his draft status, my friend said that he'd in no way be surprised to see him play in the show one day. Of course, that's his teammate talking, but it's always good to hear.
And you'll all be glad to know I've passed on a nice "welcome to the family" from all of us Habs fans
