Captain? Who needs a captain?

Ten men have worn the captain’s C for the Montreal Canadiens since Henri Richard retired in 1975. There will be another, the 28th captain in franchise history.

But one of hockey’s greatest stars, and perhaps its most lion-hearted leader, wonders whether the only National Hockey League club for which he played need sew a C on any jersey.

“Everybody should be a captain out there,” Richard said with an authority that allowed no argument. “The letter is more a symbolic thing, that’s what I think.”

Here's more with the legendary Pocket Rocket. And see below for his remarkable 1955-56 rookie-season contract, written by general manager Frank Selke on a nearly 2-year-old desktop calendar pad.

Should like to reply to all your fine points with my opinion on the Balsy matter, but since my computer is slowin down a tad and with your kind permission, I'll give the overview to all of you here.

The league is outdated? Filled with dinosaurs? Narrow-minded? In need of fresh blood and fresh outlook?

Ok. Totally agree.

But it's their club house.

They made it; it's theirs. And if that means you gotta wear Mickey Mouse pants and sing the Bavarian national anthem backwards while bouncing a beachball on your head to JOIN the club, then that's what you're gonna hafta do if you WANT to join the club.

However competent he may be in a business sense, Balsy has zero diplomacy skills. And on Hockey Planet, as you all know, diplomacy is a vertue. Consider that no other sport has a higher proportion of conservative gentlemen. (I have no figures to back up this claim; it may be subconsciously biased.) So on that front, Balsy gets ZERO support from me.

That being said, if he was fighting to bring the team back to WINNIPEG? Aaaaaah, THEN, I would encourage him and lobby for him.

Because then he would be doing something noble on Hockey Planet. And I dare say he mighta been given more leeway and made more headway in that grumpy old club then.

Peace Out

Best I can do for now, Bobby:

Take a look at Scott Gomez,

Little UFA we got.

Not much of a centre;

Never seems to score a lot.

But with the dumbos across the border

Will play for America

With his boys in California.

I'm hoping it's going to come true

Cuz it’ll mean the Habs are good too!

Na-na-na-na! Na-na, na-naaaa-na-na-na-na...

Peace Out

I wanted to post this, this morning but I erased it by accident, and I don't like repeating myself even if I didn't say anything in the first place, but here goes:

In cyberspace, you must dilute your pride. If you're waiting for the person you're arguing with to say "You're right; I AM a complete idiot and I appreciate you trashing the heck outta me on an open forum where everyone can witness it. I am an utter tool and you totally owned me.", you'll be waiting forever.

Suggestion? Whether debating or confronting an incendiary jack or an abominable troll (which I personally didn't think the person in question to be), ask yourself this: How would Jean Béliveau respond?

I will tell you how: By respecting the debater enough to engage without spite and respecting the troll enough not to engage with it.

Remember the video? NEVER feed the trolls. Never. Ever. Dilute your pride and suck it up if you think that's who you're dealin with. Most folks know what's what here anyways. You all know this.

The person in question wasn't trolling, imo. Being incendiary and being a troll are two different things. Only one constant remains: In cyberspace, NO ONE gets the last word. So why waste your literary talents thusly?

Peace Out

Geezh!, but you artists are so tempermental :)

HardHabits's picture

You're only as good as your last album. Good thing is you keep cranking out the hits!

HardHabits's picture

If anybody is interested, this is the Team Canada training camp roster.

HardHabits's picture

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this but the NHL files bid to purchase Phoenix Coyotes

So rather than move the team to a market where it will earn money, they're going to keep it in Phoenix and basically tax teams, like say the Montreal Canadiens, who actually turn a profit and in the interim own this albatross until somebody comes up and say they'll purchase the team and keep them there.

Where was all this good will when the Nordiques and Jets were in trouble? The Nordiques went to a market that is doing well, they won the Cup twice which isn't too shabby. The Jets need to take off and land elsewhere. Wake up people and by that I mean the NHL board of governors and that little napolean Bettman!!!!

Thoughts?

Chris's picture

This is purely a move to keep Jim Balsillie out of the picture.  And to be honest, I support it 100%.

I'm choosing to separate the two issues:  his recent attack on Eugene Melnyk demonstrates that while keeping the Coyotes in Phoenix is disatrously stupid, allowing Jim Balsillie into the club would be an equally colossal blunder.  He has absolutely no respect for any kind of rules...if he had kept his mouth shut and played it by the book, he would probably have a team by now.

Instead, he has chosen to declare war on pretty much every other owner in the NHL.  If he's this confrontational before he gets a team, think of what he might do in the league.

HardHabits's picture

Yeah, he might win a Cup! ;-)

Chris's picture

Controversial plus rich don't always equal a Cup...sometimes it just equals Charles Wang or Bruce McNall.  :)

doug's picture

Agree that as a separate act, taken out of context of other things, this makes a lot of sense.  Balsillie would be a terrible thing for the league.  Two wrongs don't make a right, though, and the NHL really is run by a bunch of self-absorbed clowns without much business - or common - sense.

HardHabits's picture

Corporations get sucked into "models" and forget things rudimentary like common sense and hence lose touch with their business sense in the process. The "model" the NHL is following we all know is US expansion, even even it means into hitherto untapped markets and now, we are witnessing, markets destined to fail. There's a certain stubborness, even in the face of facts which contradict the "model" itself, to perpetuate the model even if it means the whole structure or organization collapses or until there is a mutiny within and a changing of the guard. Bottom line is Bettman's days are numbered and Phoenix will be his Waterloo, and yes I am eklunding!

How do you know he wouldn't be good for the league?  Maybe some of the rules are outdated and its time for them to go.  I hate that Bettman is going to force his will on this problem and make teams like the Habs pay for a loser team to stay in a loser city where it will keep losing.  The Coyotes will fold.  Its just a matter of when.  And Bettman forcing this to drag on is only going to hurt other teams.  You believe Melnyk.  I dont think he's all that clean either.  I'd give Balsillie a chance.

Chris's picture

I don't think Melnyk is particularly clean...I'm skeptical enough to believe that ANY successful CEO has got some skeletons in the closet!  :)

And you are right about the Coyotes.  I think that they will fold as well, or move elsewhere.  I just don't think that the wrong of adding Balsillie into the fold is a good solution to the Phoenix conundrum.  Nor am I especially convinced that moving into Hamilton is the right idea.  I could buy Winnipeg, Quebec City or even Halifax (although that would be a huge stretch).  Hamilton just seems like an awkward fit.

At the end of the day, my crystal ball can't predict with any certainty how Balsillie would be as an owner.  But my gut tells me he would be a nightmare situation given the context of the loathing he has established amongst Bettman and the other owners.

As for Bettman, he has power, but I don't think this decision is his alone.  This would have to have come with the backing of the league's owners, by whom he is employed.

doug's picture

That is absolutely outlandish.  I can't believe the lengths they'll go to - and the degree they'll switch gears.  They clearly will do anything to keep Balsillie out of the club. . . makes a little bit of business sense in terms of making a bad club situation modestly viable, but is all about ego.  Surprised it hadn't been posted.

We need Boone back!

S Gagne of the Flyers pulled a groin today at the Nationals training camp. Maybe out maybe not???

He would be missed on this team

Chris's picture

He's on the plane back to Philly according to the Globe & Mail, so its sounds like he's definitely done with the camp.  But it doesn't mean he can't make the team.  He missed the camp in 2002 as well and still made the team.  It just gave a younger player a chance to shine, in that case Jarome Iginla.  Let's see if another youngster steps up.

JIMVINNY's picture

I think there are enough people ahead of him that he won't make the team anyways.

Ian Cobb's picture

Thanks I did not know that he went home. Might have time to mend. But groins take a long time.

No kidding, look at Franky B. last year. Even when he came back he got hurt his first shift.

What are you talking about? I did no such thing!!!!

Chris's picture

Sounded like its not that major, more precautionary than anything as he's coming off hip surgery in the off-season.  I read it as him not being quite ready at this point in his rehabilitation for the pace of the scrimmages and drills.  Weird, I can't find the article now even though I only read it an hour ago.

Must be losing my mind.

Dintrox's picture

My guess as to why the comments were disabled. Perhaps it was an argument certain individuals had late last night that went on for pages and pages. I came in early this AM. and noticed a lot of bantering back and forth. I wasn't involved, but a couple that feign ingnorance as to why the comments were disabled were.

HardHabits's picture

No need to guess. Too bad the comments were removed because the explanation would've been there to see for anybody who is interested in knowing what happened. To say that "it was an argument certain individuals had late last night that went on for pages and pages" misconstrues the events that took place and invariably the facts.

An individual, let's call him The King of Trolls, all hail The King of Trolls, anyways The King of Trolls in no uncertain terms made a veiled threat to the people who would attend the Summit and made a pretty nasty derogitory slur towards a major player with regards to summit organization. To call out "certain individuals" is completely ridiculous. It was the head troll who started to argue with The King of Trolls. Then after a while a douchebag, a couple of tools, and the head tool starting the psychological torture in the guise of side splitting humour and The King of Trolls was overthrown.

The events have been sequestered as they will be part of an ongoing investigation and eventual court room drama as The King of Trolls has collected evidence in the form of screenshots and is presenting his case to have the Democracy overthrown and his Monarchy re-instated.

The Teacher's picture

LOL, I know who the Head troll and douchebag were lol, but the others must have been named after I left.

JIMVINNY's picture

Since I came up with the "king of Trolls" moniker, I may have to sue you for using it without my permission.  We'll see what my lawyer has to say.

The Teacher's picture

LMAO screenshhot, something about lawyers and stuff LMAO!@

doug's picture

I was involved in the argument and will not feign ignorance.

I certainly never felt angry the entire time.  I did feel childish last night and this morning, but unless something happened later this morning I disagree that it was all that big a deal.  Love Ian and defended him perhaps too vigorously albeit in tongue-in-cheek manner.  It was certainly off-topic and silly but paled in comparison to how bad I've seen it get at times during the season, had fairly tame language, some sophomoric insults, and is all over.

I shan't do it again, or will try not to, at least.  I respect that every forum needs its rules and that the administrator of said forum makes them.  I disagree that we had to be closed down today when far worse has happened at other times, but I apologize for my part on behalf of all of you who represented collateral damage to the extent that some other posts might have been written today.

My real issue?  I can't go another day without Boone.  Something like 30 months straight and then he disappears without a trace. . . how do you expect me to keep my sanity?! ;)

G-Man's picture

"I can't go another day without Boone....how do you expect me to keep my sanity?!"

That's the best reason for last night that I've heard. :)

Wasn't blaming anyone. I wasn't involved and didn't bother reading the 'discussion'. Just seems to me that it was the likely cause.

" I wasn't involved, but a couple that feign ingnorance as to why the comments were disabled were." ??

Not sure whom you are referring to here, I for one have no problem with my involvement last night!

doug's picture

Definitely was. . . and I didn't mean to imply you were blaming anyone.  Just wanted to own up to being part of the mob before the video showed up on YouTube.  Attorney said I should so I did.

I think the message has gotten through.

jmsheehy19's picture

What happened? I came home to check and see if there was any response to my posting early this morning, only to see that the comments had been disabled about an hour after I wrote my "piece". Did poop hit the fan or what?

Edit: Replaced "sh-t" with "poop".

Dario.

Everything is cool, you did great actually. I brought last night to Dave's attention, and he does not have the time to play school yard teacher with adults. So he just shut us down and I hope the lesson was learned by all of us on here.

This is a privilege to have this site, or not have it at all. I have to learn also not to answer people that want to only cause havoc.

No need to respond let's just drop it, thanks and you did very well.

Ian

ManApart's picture

I don't get why you had to go to Stubbs and complain. From what I saw last night, there were just a few people having a silly discussion/arguement. I didn't see anything over the top. Petty and juvenile maybe, but nothing worth getting overly excited about. Personally, I found it kinda funny. It's illegal to have stupid or childish debates/discussions/arguements now? Unless something happened that I missed out on, I think running to the sites administrators and then them, in turn, trying to control how people decide to converse is rediculous. Sometimes, in this medium, things get a little "dopey". No big deal. You turn off the conversation and come back another time. Running to Stubbs to "do something" and him pulling his parental trip is pretty degrading to us all, I think.

Ian sometimes gets to big for his boots because he thinks he's the grand pooba of this place.  Sometimes the pooba has to squash other people's poo I guess.

These are always caught by the Gazette staff, Ian is just being Ian and taking responsibility. It is called leadership, as you will soon learn from your up coming studies. Good luck, by the way.

ManApart's picture

I don't know everything that was said, but making a big issue about someone who is trolling online, is futile, counterproductive, and kinda juvenile in itself. Whining about a poster who is "acting mean" is not the answer. Ignoring and not inflaming the situation is. This is the online world son. Can't treat it the same as the real one. If you can't understand these basic points Habfan, then I'm afraid you are the one that needs the luck.

Chris's picture

One absolutely can treat the online world in the same way as the real world.  The anonymity of the online world seems to instill in some people a licence to act in a way they would never, ever have the guts to do in a real conversation with strangers.  I simply can not understand nor tolerate that level of disrespect.  The adage, "Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me!" applies very well here.

Your point about making an issue out of trolling being futile is a bit lost on me.  The Gazette staff can, do and will continue to deal with these types of situations whenever they can.  They provide a service, and they actively moderate it to try and keep it clean enough that people can allow their children to read these forums.

doug's picture

I'm off to dinner, but think that the point is that while that's the way it should be, in most cases it doesn't end up being that way.  The reality is that the cloak of anonymity will empower people and will make certain people act childishly and ruin an otherwise good conversation.  To suggest that this is not the case is not to be realistic.

I agree with the point that the best approach in online forums is to ignore the offensive party.  There will always be offending parties, and they will always conspire to contaminate forums.  There are no repercussions, and some of them may be very frustrated in their "real lives" and need to act irrationallly here.  Others will just be unthoughtful people who you would walk away from in a real-world setting, but you can't.  Still others will be someone who's boring, offensive, or otherwise annoying to me but not to you, or vice versa.

If not the best, you're one of our best posters, in my opinion, so I'm not trying to start anything and hope it's not interpreted that way.  I just honestly disagree (and won't respond because I'm off for a bit).

Chris's picture

No offence read.

My only concern is that when there are comments that are offensive or vile in some other way, there has to be a mechanism to remove them.  These comments are not "live" in that they are gone once they are written...so even late night craziness, often fueled by some wobbly pops, can be read the following morning by kids.

I don't think Kevin, Dave or Mike really want to (or should they have to!) moderate individual comments to keep things clean.  Friendly banter is fine, and I've often laughed my butt off reading some of the stuff people got up to the night before...I can't dream of participating, because I'm nowhere near witty enough!  :)  I would just draw the line at malicious personal attacks and obscenities.  The result is that an entire forum can get wiped out, taking away some babies (interesting posts) with the bath water.

HardHabits's picture

Up until now ONLY the offensive posts were surgically removed. This is the first time I've seen the nuclear option used.

Too bad because last night had some gems. Maybe it's subscribing to a cheap form of humour on my part but I haven't laughed so hard in a while, and getting that type of comic relief from the written word, almost live, is so refreshing and unlike watching a South Park video or seeing a stand-up comic.

Some posters here have incredible senses of humour and are extremey witty. It shows that even in the face of adversity that something positive can come out of it, and it's a bit of a testament to the character of those who participated that such an occurrence happened. Lots of bonding going on as well, which is never a bad thing, even if at the expense of adversity but in a sense it was karma at work in what brought that on.

Chris's picture

They've used the nuke a couple of times before, but it certainly hasn't been for a while.  But I had a feeling it was coming...there have been a lot more personal attacks of late, so it was a matter of time before it escalated into a "gang" fight.  Those are also as old as this site.  :)

"I think running to the sites administrators and then them, in turn, trying to control how people decide to converse is rediculous. Sometimes, in this medium, things get a little "dopey". No big deal. You turn off the conversation and come back another time. Running to Stubbs to "do something" and him pulling his parental trip is pretty degrading to us all, I think." is your comment that I was responding to. The how to deal with troll business we are almost in sync on.

Ian is taking responsibilty here in the bigger picture of the incident getting out of hand, when it is not his. The rest of my first comment to you as stated.

You always make your own luck.

doug's picture

Habfab - you still lost me.  I can't imagine what readers with an IQ lower than my 220 are doing.

I wish you would quit using Fahrenheit like your neighbors to make everything look "larger" :)

AHAHAHAHA, now that was a gem!

doug's picture

Habfab's a guy I have great respect for.  Ian's a guy I have great respect for.

Can't argue with that logic, though.  It was a series of silly interactions completed by a silly action.

No harm, no foul.  I say we drop it and move on to talking about any other issue that hasn't a thing to do with hockey or the Habs. . .

HardHabits's picture

What did you say? Was your post the last straw that broke the camels back? ;-)

There were so many responses that the system overloaded and shut down LOL :)

It was an uneventful yesterday;

Reading what you had to say

That you must be moving on.

Like Don King without a boxer,

Like Queen without a bone,

You’re a special player.

Too bad you’re moving on.

And you’ll go on shining,

Shining like brand new.

You’ll never have to doubt me

Cuz I never doubted you.

Goodbye Kovy!, it’s been nice.

Hope you get your time on ice.

Tried to spread your point of view

Yet some folks don’t think it’s true.

Goodbye Saku, goodbye Gain;

Hello Melnyk, hello pain.

Feel no sorrow, feel no shame

Back in two years for our games.

Peace Out

I admire your perseverance and continued support.  I'm with you, although that doesn't mean I'm against any of the new us.

I don't think you'll ever see him in a Habs sweater again, but a man can hope.  One of the brightest lights in watching Habs games was his coming off the right side on power plays. . . an opportunity to score and score beautifully on every shift.  I love hockey and I love winning and I love entertainment. . . one can argue about his impact on #2 but he's certainly the most fun Habs player we've had since Saku went down with the knee injury after starting out that season leading the league in scoring.  Remember THAT?  #11 was incredible when he was young.  Kovalev still is.

cautiousoptimist's picture

As unreasonable as Medvedev is being, we're not much better: most of us complain when a rising NHL star ditches his team and contract to head for Russia, but we've got no problem with players in Russia doing the same to come here.  The NHL should work out a deal with the KHL that makes the rules the same on both sides of the ocean, and then focus on making sure the NHL stays the best, most competitive and most attractive league in the world for young players.

  1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
  2. Mike Boone: "With Gainey at my side, I'd walk into any dark alley in the world."

doug's picture

I really don't think you can negotiate with the KHL.  I also don't think they want to negotiate - they want a competing league, not a feeder, and there's a lot of systemic issues relating to very different views on legal issues that just won't make this go away easily.

Right now they're trying to enforce kids not to come over here, and this star is making a stand.  I think that if oil prices drop then the KHL disappears. . . and until then signing a Russian player is perilous.  That's too bad, because I love their brand of hockey.

doug's picture

Well, that just made Kirill Kabanov my new favorite player.

Gagne has left camp with a groin injury.  This guy is way too unpredictable in my eyes.  I'd rather take my chances with another player or a centre who is converted to the wing.

Chris's picture

Gagne is a very strong two-way player and penalty killer:  speedy, smart and with enough offensive potential that you HAVE to respect his ability to burn you.

The team won't be named until closer to the Olympics, and his inconsistency has often been linked to injuries.  If he's healthy, Gagne is a guy I very much expect to be in the mix because of his two-way play and prior international experience on the biggest stage.

Jayjjcc's picture

I'd rather see M-A Flower before Cam Ward...

I don't like the 2nd or 4th offensive lineups to be perfectly honest...

I'd still like to see Heatley in the lineup... I know, I know... but he is a good hockey player and I'd like to see him and Nash get centered Getzlaf... seems like that would be one hell of a productive line...

Fant-HAB-ulous's picture

That 4th line is not the kind of 4th line I would pick. I would make that the 2nd line.

Robert has a very interesting plan on his blog. He plans to compare stats of current & former Habs during the upcoming season.  I know this can be done by comparing stats from previous seasons, but IMO it's more interesting to do it as this season progresses. Afterall, it's the current team that we all want to do well.

I tried to link it, but it does not work. It can be accessed from Sites We Like on the right hand side. Click on Eyes on The Prize.

Whats the point?  I dont care how other guys match up to this years guys.  If the team wins, they win.  If they don't they don't.  Comparing stats to other stats is completely pointless.  Who cares?  Honest to god, some of you people need to get out and think of something else besides tiny bits of hockey trivia.  I mean, I love the Habs too and I get that you love the Habs.  But lets love them while their playing and stop picking every stupid little bit of trivia apart like its gold nuggets.  It just proves that you need to get out more.

What's in the water that's making everyone so angry? If you don't like it skip it... if I read all of the internet I would go crazy aswell, but I skim through here first, find something relevant, read the post and it's replies... but if it's something like "Farewell Saku" AGAIN, then I just don't read it...

Maybe it's all this painful waiting, knowing October is getting closer and closer but at the same time seeming like it's getting here slower and slower...

Not angry at all.  Just curious about what people see in this pointless stats stuff.

To each his own. If you don't care, then just try to ignore.

Oh I do.  I dont go to his site because I dont care for writers who reach too far for relevance in history.  But I'm seriously curious why anyone would care about this stats thing.  Why do you like it?
