About
I grew up in Park Extension, within walking distance of Dickie Moore's Dairy Queen on Jean Talon. Moore had a place on L'Acadie Blvd., and we used to see him driving around in his convertible with a Samoyed and a very dishy wife.
While "studying" at McGill University during the 1960s, I used to attend games at the old Montreal Forum. My fellow undergraduate reprobates and I would scramble up the stairs to get centre-ice spots in the top standing room section, where aged ushers didn't know or care what we were smoking.
I stood out in the cold for six hours to get tickets to the 1975 New Year's Eve game between the Canadiens and Central Red Army. With the exception of the birth of my daughter, the 3-3 tie was the greatest event I've ever seen in my life.
The Canada-U.S. Gold medal game comes close .... but I wasn't there.
I've been a professional journalist since 1974, when I joined the Montreal Star sports department. I've covered the 1976 Olympic Games, the 1979 Expos, pop music and MSO tours of Europe and Asia (classical musicians are WAY more fun to drink with than athletes). I wrote a TV & Radio column for 20 years and, since 2000, have written a City column for The Gazette.
The best part of being a Habs Inside/Out contributor is attending games at the Bell Centre. I think it's a great building: noisy, raucous and packed to the rafters with Montrealers and visitors who live for hockey.
And I still get goosebumps every time Michel Lacroix booms out "Accueillons nos Canadiens ..."
Having seen the Boston Red Sox win two World Series and the Pittsburgh Steelers add a couple Super Bowl titles, I suppose I can die happy ... but not before another Stanley Cup parade. And I'd really like my daughter to see a historic New Year's Eve game.
I like all the players. Covering baseball gives me a profound appreciation of pro athletes who aren't jerks.
My weltanschauung was summarized by the late great Bill Hicks when he said "all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves."
Have a nice day.

...BUT can We fit Him in under The Cap ???
Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

"The Dalai Lama...The flowing robes...the grace...bald...striking..."
"so he hauls one off into this crevice by a 10,000 foot glacier and you know what the Lama says to me...Gunga Lagunga....so he stiffs me and I say hey Lama...how about a little something for the effort???...there won't be any money...but when you die...on your deathbed you'll receive total consciousness...so I got that going for me..."
One of my favorite Caddy Shack quotes....couldn't resist...I actually heard he has seen the clip and thinks it is funny
"At least we are not the Leafs!"
Happy Birthday Patrick Roy!

Ya! The Habs Rule! now on Twitter!
Then Also Happy Birthday to Mario Lemieux. Born on exactly the same day as Patrick Roy.
Two of the best three Quebec players in the modern game. Happy Birthday!
I personally think that Brodeur has sort of lost his groove since his comeback after the injury. Could be that he is 38 too, but just saying. I could be wrong though, but he has been pretty shaky including the last year playoffs.
RDS reports Sergei is reporting to Hamilton!!
I think he realised that Weber coming back up so quickly could also happen to him. One forward down, with a good attitude, he could be the first call-up
Also, BG told him he won't trade him unless he reports to the farm club. So it was either that or Russia.
... maybe in response to a story about two of my favourites - the Habs and the Dalai Lama - I can offer the following reflection. I just got home from my old-timers game, turned on the TV to the Vikings - Packers game, and immediately heard about a flag thrown because of "taunting".
... I have to ask: what kind of sport, in what kind of country, considers it appropriate to institutute a game penalty for an offence of a moral nature? I certainly hope the NHL doesn't get to that point.
"Whenever you have control of the puck, and don't know what to do with it, put it in the net." - Toe Blake
Looks like the Dali Lama thinks they gave him a scarf!
SK74 must have bought a GPS.... He finnaly found his way to Hamilton
... I'm happy that he did, and I look forward to watching him in his successful NHL career. Let's not forget the incredibly difficult issues involved in arriving in a foreign country as a teenager, not being able to speak the language, having no sense of the cultural niceties, and being expected to carry on without ever making a mistake.
... I say give him a break, and we'll reap the rewards.
"Whenever you have control of the puck, and don't know what to do with it, put it in the net." - Toe Blake
curious to see how this unfolds.
am i the only one who feels like this kid could be a 50-60pt guy someday if he gets a major attitude adjustment (i know that's a tall order) ?
If there is someone who can go FULL BREEZER,it is my buddy the dalai lama
go "FULL BREEZER" at fullbreezer.com order your "FULL BREEZER" t-shirts today http://www.customink.com/designs/fulbreezer/13365436-2844242/snb/?cm_ven...
Maybe your FULL BREEZER shirt should be in package with the white jersey... imagine your shirt over him instead of the jersey?
Bowling: Great fun between hockey games!
http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?name=Christopher+Higgins
look how douchey christopher higgins looks now...i'm expecting him to put on an extra 50 pounds and bleach his hair blonde and start wearing haiwaiian t-shirts
-I will not respond to destructive criticism about: D'Agostini, Price, Plekanec, O'Byrne
TBH, this guy is going to rock in NYR. Watching him on RDS, this is a different Higgins.
I like the on pace section on TSN's site. 246 hits! Woah!
You know who would be a good candidate as a coach or GM? Larry Murphy.
This guy makes sense 98% of the time on NHL on the Fly on the NHL network and he definitely knows what he was talking about. Also, being an ex-Leaf, he didn't write of the Habs as fast as all the other pundits in the hockey world, saying we only need to worry about size come playoff time and there's always the trade deadline to make the necessary changes.
He said during the course of the season, however, our speed will give other teams fits and all we need is for the chemistry to settle in. He didn't go as far as to say we were going to be the best in the East but he did not exclude us from a safe position in the top 8.
In average, "experts" are saying we're finishing 8th this year "at best" ?
We'll see.
Although O'B and Marky are injured, the one area we have SOME depth is defense.
Carle, Webs and Subban are all waiting to make an impact. I think they can get the job done replacing O'B for at least 6 weeks. I don't feel a need to really go searching the market for an extra D-man to replace Markov. Hamr is more than capable to cover the void that Markov leaves defensively. As for QBing the PP, Mara and Gorges look to be getting off to a good start and Spacek is a smart puck mover. Let's not forget, Markov wasn't the best shooter, just a smart passer who knew how to pinch. Hamr has the ability to pinch and has done so for us in the past.
Markov was also quick to shoot the puck into the pads of the opposing team. I think losing Markov is a blow for sure, but having him is like adding another Ferrari to your stocked garage.
RDS tweets: Sergei has ACCEPTED to go to Hamilton. I like it. Luv the guts on this kid and good on him for realizing the only way he can play some hockey is to go to the Dogs and it'll give his best chance. Give him some time.
"All you need in hockey is good character, luck and skills" - Ovie
Ummmmmm he reported because Bob said publicly that he wouldn't trade him until he reported to Hamilton.....if this guy had any "gut's" he would have reported when he was told to and not thrown a tantrum and requested a trade.....he's as good as gone.
Hooray and good one Sergei! - There is no doubt the young man has loads of talent and someday will make a difference in the NHL.
Not so good...
From Canoe Sports -
After refusing to join the Hamilton Bulldogs last Sunday, Sergei Kostitsyn had requested a trade to the direction of Canadian.
ALSO READ:
Kostitsyn in Russia?
Rumors, rumors ...
A little over a week later, that the young striker will join the Bulldogs, according to what reported RDS.
It should however be careful, Kostitsyn still wants to leave Montreal and what to play in the NHL. If nothing changes within a few weeks, the scenario Russia could return to the table.
For Canadian cadet can exchange the Kostitsyn brothers, Bob Gainey had asked him to join the Bulldogs in order to increase its value.
Last year, the fiery striker was involved in the famous story of organized crime and had subsequently joined the Bulldogs.
This season, he arrived late for practice of the Canadian who was standing at the Coliseum in Quebec, claiming that the work had prevented him from making it on time.
"This season, he arrived late for practice of the Canadian who was standing at the Coliseum in Quebec, claiming that the work had prevented him from making it on time."
What work? His job is playing hockey, lol.
yea just saw that on TV....according to RDS....but hope this is true now!!
im glad the boy changed his mind...his parents prolly gave him sh*t..hehe
----- go habs f*ckin go, AMEN!!! -----
That could be a good news if it's true.. we could use some talent down the road!
I'm all for a second chance if the kid stays with the club.
I am not feeling very forgiving right now because I want Mcquire called out. Comparing that bunch of loser d-men in Toronto to the big three in Montreal. Mcquire I am still hoping someone will find a way to put that up on the big board when TSN is doing a game in the Bell Centre and your in ther house you a-hole. The way he build Komi up like the second coming of Orr to kiss the *** of MLSE. Sorry Dalai Lama I can't forgive such a ***-kissing idiot Like Mcquire. If the Leafs keep giving up 5 goals a game they will allow well over 400 on the season just a reminder T.O. fans Boston picks number one thanks to your great GM.
I agree! You can always count on McGuire to make idiotic, unfounded comments. There is absolutley no comparison between the Montreal Big Three and the Maple Leafs defensemen!!
I believe you're taking what he said out of context, he explained it on Melnik's show, unfortunatley i can't remember what it was he said, cause it's Mcguire, and no one really listens to him anyway. And i'm not defending him cause lord knows i can't stand his holier than thou bullsh*t attitude, but he explaned it nonetheless.
see.........you guys are always Dissin Eklund........HE SAID somebody new will be adorning the bleu blanc rouge by weeks end
.....hope this guy can skate faster than he drinks water.....
Well if not, he could be a stay-at-home defenceman.
Yann martel would have an orgasm.
Nietzsche would love it.
Am I the first to use the pic?
Have you got this one?
I can't believe they gave him a retired number. They should have gone with infinity. Anyhow, hope this act is more auspicious than when I had my Expos cap blessed by the Karmapa.
I had the puck I caught in the teeth two years ago after Devil loss blessed by Les Grossman. After that, he told me that if I didn't get out of his sight by the time he took the last gulp of his diet coke, he'd kick me in the gonads so hard, his shoelaces would come out of my nose.
Honest!

The Canadiens are looking at John-Michael Liles from Colorado aswell as Marc-Andre Bergeron.
http://twitter.com/NHLSourcesSay
Thoughts?
Liles is too expensive. His cap hit is something around 4.5 million or 3.5...can't remember but I'm pretty sure it's my first estimate. He can be solid, but for that money we'd have to move some players. M-A Bergeron is my pick. Solid, french-canadian, good shot, cheaper.
I got a cellphone shot of this on the jumbotron -- awesome!
Anyone know if he's a left hand shot or a right hand?? Imagine him on the powerplay!

very cool, very nice.
The CH has been truly blessed!
As the buddhist said to the hot dog vendor, "Make me one with everything!" I started reading The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Kind of slow. I can't wait until they get to Jerry Garcia. The lesser known, Tibetan Book of the Walking Wounded is about a hockey team, I think.
Are you reading Timothy Leary's adaptation for LSD trips.
Who? LS what? Who've you been talking to?
This reminds me of Mr.Gainey's trip to Italy last year.

His Holiness doesn't believe in material possessions...so give me the jersey!
My Blog: http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
I would have though that the jersey would have been a #8, since Buddhists consider it to be their fortunate number, which also has great significance in the religion.
Plus, it's available. :)
As a practicing Bhuddist I've never heard that before. Interesting.
My Blog: http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
From Wikipedia, so take it for what it's worth. :)
The Dharmacakra, a Buddhist symbol, has eight spokes. The Buddha's principal teaching -- the Four Noble Truths -- ramifies as the Noble Eightfold Path. In Mahayana Buddhism, the branches of the Eightfold Path are embodied by the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Manjusri, Vajrapani, Avalokiteśvara, Maitreya, Ksitigarbha, Nivaranavishkambhi, Akasagarbha, and Samantabhadra). These are later (controversially) associated with the Eight Consciousnesses according to the Yogacara school of thought: consciousness in the five senses, thought-consciousness, self-consciousness, and unconsciousness-'consciousness' (alaya-vijñana). The 'irreversible' state of enlightenment, at which point a Bodhisattva goes on 'autopilot', is the Eight Ground or bhūmi. In general, 'eight' seems to be an auspicious number for Buddhists, e.g., the 'eight auspicious symbols' (the jewel-encrusted parasol; the goldfish (always shown as a pair, e.g., the glyph of Pisces); the self-replenishing amphora; the white kamala lotus-flower; the white conch; the eternal (Celtic-style, infinitely looping) knot; the banner of imperial victory; the eight-spoked wheel that guides the ship of state, or that symbolizes the Buddha's teaching). Similarly, Buddha's birthday falls on the 8th day of the 4th month of the Chinese calendar.
I did some research and apparently, the CH figures prominantly in Buddhism too.

You are such an information magnet Chuck, good for you.
This is just too cool.
He finally reached enlightenment.

Bugs, your new titles are a bit on the, shall we say, martial side, are they not? Was there a declaration of war and I missed the memo?

Only quibble: Why was His Holiness given the road white? He was at the Bell Centre, for heaven's sake.

While I love the (now once again) home red, I have always thought the white is the most beautiful uniform in hockey.
...Tibetan khatas are usually white symbolising the pure heart of the giver...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khata
I always think of the whites as the home jersey.
The Dalai Lama is always on the road anyway, so it's fitting.
My Blog: http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
They're saving red for the Pope because Ray Lalonde's marketing stats indicate Montreal has more practcing Roman Cathloics than Buddhists ... for now.
White for the Buddhist faith.
Red for the Catholic faith.
Blue for the Jewish faith.
What colour is left for Cobbism.
Please don't say yellow!
No Ian, yellow is reserved for komohomoism.
Presently practiced mainly in parts of Ontario and McGuireville.
Why, bleu, blanc, rouge, Ian. You reek of it.
Rainbow?
My Blog: http://kibblesofsteel.wordpress.com/
I also hear red brings out the pope's eyes.
The Pope, also known as Emperor Palpatine.
Hahaha, maybe not after habs fans get ahold of this video.
Fantastic stuff! The Dalai Lama is a great sport in my book.
Then all Tibetans will be Habs fans.
Very cool.
