Carey Price's cowboy on horseback has been stabled – the Canadiens goaltender will debut his new 2009-10 mask tonight in the Habs' home opener vs. Colorado, a lid featured here in photographs exclusive to habinsideout.com.

On both sides, it features a Grim Reaper riding a chopper, with six aces of spades appearing on the sides, the CH logo on the forehead and, on the chin, skulls and the stylized, half-mirrored name PRICE.

On the back is reference to the Carson Kolzig Foundation, a fundraising initiative of Price's good friend Olaf Kolzig, the recently retired goaltender who works tirelessly to improve the lives of the autistic. Kolzig's son, Carson, is affected by the neural development disorder.

"Carey wanted an edgier look," said Toronto-based sports artist and designer David Arrigo, who took Price's idea to come up with this final design. The predominant red colour was chosen to complement the goalie's new Vaughn equipment.

Arrigo met Price in the lobby of the Canadiens' Toronto hotel the night before the season began to run the almost-finished work by the netminder, who loved it.

Famously not superstitious, Price is the only one of 14 goalies for whom Arrigo designed new masks this season who had no problem with the headgear being seen publicly before it was worn into action.

Price will wear this mask all season, except for a couple of special occasions.

See more of Arrigo's work here. And see here for a video of his Fallen Heros tribute masks.

That's so metal.  Big improvement over the "I got friends with low GAA's" mask, but I still think the "tribute" mask is the best.

didn't think anyone else on HIO listened to Children of Bodom. Nice reference.

Nice and scary... just in time for Halloween! I like the "attitude", too. A bit of swagger is never a bad thing for a goalie.

awesome mask, luv the skulls, reaper(i have a tatt of too), chopper and the deap red. way better than that goofy garth brooks design.

Carey Price should watch Cam Ward, and look to Ward for inspiration. I truly believe that ward is the guy that is most capable of leading canada to gold in 2010.  If you watched the pittsburgh/carolina game last night, you would know what im talking about.  Ward has such fire, and such drive, he never gives up on a play, and does absolutely everything he can to stop the puck.  I would love to see some of that fire from Carey.  To me, the only thing Carey is missing is some confidence and some fire inside.

Carey will be a great goalie and a legend one day.Lets hope the 'Old Grim Reaper' can push him to challenge shooters more.Too many soft goals, high glove side.

What happen to the other new mask ??? The one with all the habs numbers  on it with the screwed up dryden/ worsley and plante ??

That's going to be used on special occasions throughout the season, likely the jersey throwback games, almost certainly the Dec. 4 game.

LOVE it. But again I'm a goalie / jersey / mask nut, I love changes and new things. I have to say though, I've associated him with the blue colour. I was never a fan of the country music theme, but the colour was nice and stood out.

HABS_ADDICT_69's picture

LMAO at some of these Habs fans! Price can't catch a break can he? Fans didn't like his Country mask. Fans ripped him apart when he came off an injury last year. Fans criticized him for being to mellow & when she showed some emotion in the last game of the year to the fans booing him he was bashed again. He had two outstanding games to start the 2009/10 season & the game in Vancouver was not even remotely his fault whatsoever, & again he gets bashed. Now some fans don't like his new mask. Price just can’t please now can he? Some fans R just plain PATHETIC!

pic1983's picture

Welcome to montreal!

And its not just Carey Price, no hab can please all canadiens fans.  Canadiens fans are impossible to please.

habs4_25th's picture

Actually you got it right, unless the team is winning then we aren't so critical.  Canadiens fans have been spoiled over the past centuary  by having very successful and winning teams in the past.  That since we've only won 2 cups in the last 29 years.  We have high demands for winning and winning more stanley cups.  A lot has changed since those days, but our demand for cups hasn't.  That what makes Montreal a hockey hot bed!!

"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be it yours to hold high."

HABS_ADDICT_69's picture

Who cares what the mask looks like.

STOP THE FREEKING PUCK....

HABS_ADDICT_69's picture

Carey has showed that he can stop pucks! People just need to chill out here. The biggest problem on this team in the DEFENCE & Pleks, AK46, Gill, Lats Shall I go on?

habsguy's picture

PLEKS??????????

pic1983's picture

Im really tired of hearing latendresse as a problem.  He was brought in to be a top 6 forward, and now we have a top 6 opening, and hes still on the third line with lapierre.  Latendresse did his best work on the top line, and he should get the chance there again.  Im really surprised with Martin putting moen on the first, thats a carbo shinanigan.

HABS_ADDICT_69's picture

Lats is slow & rarely uses his size.... he would be of great help in front of the net!

habsguy's picture

WATCH the game tonight and see if Lats uses his size!

pic1983's picture

Hes an offensive minded player who for some reason keeps getting thrust in a more defensive role on the third line.  He needs some consistency, and right now we have the space to put him in the top 6, and I just dont get why we arent.

By no means am I a pierre Mcguire fan, but the other day on melnyk in the afternoon he actually asked a good question.  He goes "When Guillaume Latendresse was first put on the team, we were told that he was to be a top 6, power forward.  What happened with that?"

And I totally agree with him.  He did his best work on the top line with koivu in the past, and now hes watching Travis Moen go on the top line.  Latendresse might not be the fastest player, but he has good hands, and a very decent shot.  If we all just show a little confidence in him, and martin gives him top 6 minutes and some skilled playmakers to play with, he just might turn into that top 6 forward.  The Kid has scored almost 50 goals in his first 200 nhl games, and thats not bad at all.

Agreed!! That was easily the most awesome mask I've ever seen. I wish I could paint that on my walls, it's so evil. :-)

Wamsley01's picture

That is awful. From more than 10 feet away it is going to be a blurry mess of red and black.

Simple works the best, just like the Canadiens logo as opposed to the Florida Panthers.

Unfortunately for any goaltender who has played for the Habs, Roy's was pretty much perfection. Minimalist, yet striking. The airbrush killed goalie mask art.

You ever heard of HD (high definition, in case you were wondering)?  It's this new-fangled technology that allows for a much clearer picture.  Clear enough that anyone using this new-fangled technology will be able to easily pick out the details of this mask.

Just kidding.  But I don't think it will be a problem.

So... How long will this design stick this time?

JIMVINNY's picture

I love it.  Bad @$$ed.

matmacat's picture

This is good. Back in the day it used to be about intimidation... well also protection of the face. Nowadays goalies just put on stuff they like, or that represents them. Yea that's good too, but sometimes it's good to try and look tough. Because who knows, the attitude might follow suit. And that's just what this guy needs.

nickster13's picture

Peter Pocklington just said on tsn that toronto is without question the best hockey market in the world. garrgahrgajkf i hate when they go and say stuff like that, montreal gets no credit from anybody

BosKibbles's picture

It's true. Only Toronto would sell out with those prices and that team. Only Toronto would be able to support a television channel just because it shows the 10 games a year you can't get on CBC, TSN or Sportsnet.

In one sense that's true, they field a horribly inadequate product and still have the highest revenues among all NHL teams. It's the GM/Ford Business model but it works!

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

oshawahabsfan's picture

The revenue comes from corporate donors, not from the number of fans buying Leafs gear. Montreal by fan numbers is most certainly higher

pic1983's picture

THe GM/FORD business model is "Lets make terrible cars, and because we have such a large unionized work force, lets keep making this ridiculous number of cars, and seeing as we cant sell them because they are so poorly made, well just sell them at a huge discount, and bleed red for the rest of eternity".  They may generate revenue because of the sheer volume of cars they sell, but their profit is non-existent!

THe Maple Leafs business model is "Were a terrible team, but for some silly reason, people in toronto dont demand any better, and they keep paying money to watch this terrible team, so lets just raise ticket prices and make even MORE money because those idiots will keep paying it!"

SO in retrospect, the Maple Leafs are more of a toyota business model, as toyotas new business model is "Well, weve established such a good name for ourselves in the past, we dont really have to try anymore, so lets cut the quality of our product so we can make more profit, and people will still buy them anyways because their toyotas!" (actually this is the mercedes benz business model circa 1999-2006, which toyota is now following).

pic1983's picture

Corny maybe, but are you really going to tell me that the grim reaper on a motorcycle is more corny then garth brooks on a horse?

What about Garth Brooks on The Grim Reaper. Badass.

spectre's picture

I find it a bit busy, but an upgrade on the cowboy theme (even though I thought the blue color scheme suited him better). I don't know if the ace of spades was his choice for a reason, but it's symbolically a foreboding card (having to do with death - grim reaper connection, maybe?) and was also considered the most "potent" card in the deck.

Technique-wise the grim reaper is seriously disappointing though :\

I like the mask, shows attitude, but Carey's gotta bounce back from the westcoast trip(he isnt Jim Carey, so there is no magic in that mask). The Centenial mask is actually more respectful of our History. Myself, have him put on Dryden's rookie mask and see how he plays w/that.

For now we have our work cut out for us. We really have only 1 production line, and thats smurfin it at best. If we are headin back for the Prize, we need a magical performance from Price and /or Halak this year. Like Patrick, carry them on his back and the rest will follow. The rest will rise if someone really leads.

Harani's picture

The Chicago Blackhawks look REALLY good but the problem they have for next season is totally mind boggling. This might be their best chance at winning the cup while keeping this highly skilled team together. Because if you look at next season, and let's assume the salary cap stays the same, the Hawks will have 13 million$ to sign Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and an additional 7 guys to complete the team. Now THAT is a big challenge.

Obviously, they will have to move some people and that's where there is hope. It is wierd to think that they would trade away the top draft picks they developed in Kane and Toews but it's those megadeals of Hossa, Huet and Brian Campbell that are hurting. Patrick Sharp with another two seasons on his contract and a 3.9 cap hit is a good addition to any team. So, if Bob is active, you never know! As much as a talented team the hawks have, it's sad that they can't keep it together but that's business.

"All you need in hockey is good character, luck and skills" - Ovie

Habs4Lyfe's picture

Habs 4 Lyfe

nice analysis, they have a great offensive team, but Huet cant take them to the promise land...but if Niemi gets going hes really their best bet...but spending all that money on hossa and campbell is what will kill them...huets good for 40 games then he'll get the swiss flu and join David Abesheir in anonymous ville

Chris's picture

The Hawks will almost certainly bury one or both of Huet or Campbell in the minors next year if they can't be traded or bought out with amnesty next summer.  There have been lots of rumblings that Kane could be available, as they are definitely keeping Toews and Keith.

And Gainey has a similar problem, Harani...we're not exactly flush for cash either next year.  Assuming that the cap stays the same, the Habs will have ~ $12 million to re-sign Price, Halak, Plekanec, Lapierre, Latendresse, Metropolit, Mara, Chipchura and D'Agostini (or their replacements).  It can be done, but we're not in any position to go poaching talent from other teams looking to pare their salary.

Halak is trade bait sometime before next year.  Right or Wrong, I think we all know that Price is the goalie of the future (at least until Simila is ready, then who knows what will happen).  Mara will not be resigned - too much young talent in the pipeline pushing for space (Weber, PK, Belle...even Carle).  Pleks might be trade bait also - I'm undecided on him (lots of energy and talent, but hard to find wingers for him).  Metro is replacable, as is Chipchura (who doesn't warrant much of a raise yet).

24 Cups's picture

Chris - I'm not so sure Chicago will be sending those guys to the minors.  Any team that does that, will find it very diffilcut to sign another UFA.  Dale Tallon really was to out to lunch when it came to free agents and the cap.  As for Mogilny, I was always under the impression that situation was something that he agreed to with management.  He knew he was finished as an NHL player, so he parked his pride and went to Albany.  He got the coin, and Lou got the cap space.

Chris's picture

The Mogilny situation may have been somewhat mutual, but he only received that contract the season before.  His hip was bothering him, but not so much that he wasn't putting up decent numbers in the NHL.  Nor was he injured, because he played another 19 games in the AHL.

I think players are willing to overlook these moves if the Hawks remain a contender with money.  San Jose's treatment of Kyle McLaren didn't seem to hurt them as a destination.

Chris Aung-Thwin's picture

Brian Campbell won't be in the minors. Last season he was on the ice for something like 40% of the Blackhawks' goals. His salary is ridiculous, but he's good. I can see Huet getting bought out, but give him a chance... he can be an awesome netminder at times (remember when we traded him to the Caps and he won like 11 straight games or something?). Not worth the contract, but a couple months of good play and he might be part of a big(ger) trade.

Chris's picture

Alexander Mogilny was a god player too (25 points in 34 games), but Lou Lameirello buried him to make room for Elias' return from injury in 2005-06.

I really like Huet, and I agree that Campbell is a very good player.  But the Hawks will be in the unenviable situation of having to decide if Campbell is better than Kane, or Huet more valuable than Keith.

I suspect they will ride them both all year and then deal Kane at the draft next year (much like the Kessel trade).  But I wouldn't be shocked to see them go the other route either...with Bowman involved in Chicaco's administration, I don't think they will shy away from being ruthless if they have to be.

andrewberkshire's picture

I was so pissed when the Devils treated Mogilny like that, one of my all time favourite players.

Agreed - they'll do what they have to do to keep the guys they think are indespensible. I think Bowman is shrewd enough to get it done via trade... let's pick up this conversation in 7 months...

SeriousFan09's picture

Montreal's got cap issues, but I think they can be handled

Price/Halak: One's going most likely, question of which.

Lats: Another average season, so long I think.

Lapierre: Re-signed, with a pay bump because he will get better.

Metropolit: May stay, or Andreas Engqvist may be brought over to take over, his SEL numbers look good to start the season over there.

Mara: OB is fixed to replace him I'd say.

D'Ags: All up to his performance.

Chips: I don't see him on the payroll next year, he's had chances to show he belongs, he's yet to do much with them.

Plekanec: He does well, he stays I'd say.

I'm still quite confident Price will be big this season, which gives Montreal an opportunity to deal Halak for one of the young Hawks D-Men, addressing Montreal's defensive depth without too big a cap hit.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

Chris's picture

As I said, it is those players or suitable replacements.

Another way of looking at it is that the Habs have $12 million to re-sign:

#1 and #2 goalie

Second-, third- and fourth-line centers

Third-line left wing

Fourth-line winger

Second-pairing defenceman

As you said, it can be done.  The question is whether it can be done and have the team still move forwards.  Price, as a RFA, is definitely re-signed and he will get a raise...$3-4 million seems to be pretty average for the younger #1 goalies.  (Fleury is signed at $3.5, Ward's new deal will pay him an average of $6.3 starting next year, Leclaire is getting $3.8 million).

Halak is arbitration eligible and will probably be traded before then to bring in a veteran back-up.  Looking at $1-2 million for this position.

Plekanec is a UFA next year, so he's not re-signing for anything less than $2.75 million, what he's making this year.  Pencil him (or his replacement) in for $3.5 million.  If you give Lapierre a bit of a raise, you're looking at at least $1 million, but he's arbitration elgible, so I expect it will go higher.  That's a minimum of $8.5 right there, leaving $3.5 million for the other 4 roster holes.  That's tight, and certainly doesn't leave space for a guy like Patrick Sharp or a comparable salary.

andrewberkshire's picture

The only solution I can see, especially if the cap goes down, is to somehow get rid of Roman Hamrlik.

24 Cups's picture

I think that's impossible to do until the trade deadline in 2011.  On the other hand, Burke was able to dump Kubina's salary.  The only way it would work is if you are willing to basically trade him for under his market value.

LEAF KILLERS's picture

they will probably wait till the draft to unload salary.
