Metro set to return; Sergei's back in Hamilton

Glen Metropolit gets ready for a faceoff.jpg

Glen Metropolit hopes to be back in the lineup tomorrow night when the Canadiens are home to the New York Islanders. Metropolit had some contact in practice today and worked with the second power-play unit. He was expecting to get final clearance from the doctors today.

Guillaume Latendresse left practice early with what was described as a minor lower-body injury. His good friend Maxim Lapierre was the left winger on the second line with Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn.

Marc-Antoine Godin of La Presse on Twitter: Sergei Kostitsyn has been suspended ... again. He reportedly left the Bulldogs yesterday, with his equipment. But now comes word that, after a meeting this afternoon with Habs GM Bob Gainey, Kostitsyn has decided to return to the Bulldogs again.

Is it true that SK74 & Gomez got into a fight at Gomez place?

SK74 maybe another wasted talent by probably one of the worst teams in the NHL in player evaluation and development our Habs.

Hayward4Price's picture

Pierre McGuire is that you? :)  Although i agree we need help in that area.

BG's conversation with SK probably when something like, kid I've tried to trade you but nobody wants a snot nosed, outta shape, cry baby who hasn't ever scored his age in points.  Why don't you go back to where you belong, play hard and prove you can crack 20 goals in the NHL.  At that point we will either play you or trade you for something more than a day old donut at Tims. :)

sergei is  prima donna who thinks he's wayyy better than he is, young punk with a yo yo yo young punk attitude. bob see's he has talent and doesnt want another ribiero incident im sure so is tippy toe-ing with sergei.

there are a few more players who need a reality check and should be sent to the farm to ride the buses and eat fast food on the road. like latendresse, too comfy now, thinks he's a vet and doesnt have the hunger anymore. dags is another one who needs a wake up call to the farm to shake his tree.maybe andrei koz too.

we are playing a full 60 mins and competing everY shift, good things wil continue if this happens.

       GO  HABS  GO !!

IF sergei was to be called up do you think it would AK46 better? or the same?... Do you think bob talked to Andrei about it or what?

I cant make heads or tails about sergei. If he would have just kept his mouth shut the first time he would already be playing as our top 6 forward. This is just another relapse. Sergei will be kept in hamilton for at least another month. Where he will either be called up by the CH or traded.WE misewell trade him trade him a draft pick or something for a legitimate top 6 forward like frolov

Which GM would give up a legitimate top 6 forward for a trouble-making propsect like SK who can't even crack the Habs lineup. If you were a GM would you make that trade?

Completely off topic but I thought you guys might enjoy this:

Ontario Judge makes unprecedented ruling
TORONTO, ONTARIO (CP) -
A seven-year-old Toronto, Ontario boy was at the center of a Toronto city courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him.
The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents & the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law & regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents & he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy alleged they had also beaten him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family & learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references & confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Toronto Maple Leafs, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone!

If Sergei would just focus on working hard... I have no doubt he would be back in the lineup in Montreal.

Focus on playing within the team's system and I'm sure there's a spot for you Sergei. Not sure if you want it anymore.

I think it's a toss up... maybe there was positive news for Sergei, meaning "Yeah, you're gonna get called up soon dude"... or "I've almost got something worked out to send you somewhere"...

Or Gainey might have said... "Sergei, I'm a gonna kick your ***"....

Do Habs Fans know fore sure that BG will trade SK74? This kid is just 22 years old.

Did BG tweeter SK74 noodle just a little bit? I wonder what plans BG has for SK74? Something had to be positive for SK74 to return to the farm team. Just have to wait and see. Habs should win tonight against NYI. NYI won in a shootout last night over the Canes. Mark my words that Halak gets the start tonight. You heard it here first on HI/O. Go Habs Go!!!!

This is what the management should have done when SK walked out the first time. It appeared that SK has misunderstood the arrangement and thought that he was lied upon by the team. The first rule of good management is never mislead an employee.

Now that we all know this face to face meeting between Bob and SK. We'll see what happens next. I think Bob will trade him during the season to at least get something back.

I hope he won't follow Grabovski's example and join the Laff.

Where will SK74 end up too? That's the million $$$$$ question?

Berks: just in case you didn't see this: posted on the al strachan article...again nothing accusatory about it, TSN did the same with Calgary Stampeders. Head Games: Sign of changing times? Calgary Stampeder Marcus Howell was knocked flat Saturday by a Saskatchewan Roughrider on the sidelines at the end of a punt return. After being hit in the upper body (head/ shoulder) Howell lay on the ground for some time. Many thought he was gone for the game. Imagine the surprise to almost everyone at McMahon Stadium when Howell was back to return the next punt. TSN's broadcast crew was surprised, too. Head injuries are a hot-button topic that is receiving increasing attention in broadcasts. TSN sideline reporter Jermaine Franklin sought out Calgary's physical therapist Pat Clayton to ask if Howell had suffered a concussion. Clayton explained that Howell had merely been winded. Clayton added tartly that the Stampeders don't send concussed players back into play. The message was relayed to the booth. TSN did its due diligence. Case closed. The microscope will only get stronger on pro sports teams as evidence mounts about the deadly effect of head shots, and TV networks such as TSN make exposing that information a priority. It happened again Tuesday after notorious head hunter Colby Armstrong of Atlanta Thrashers hit Montreal's Marc-Andre Bergeron with a blindside hit to the head - what NHL veteran Matthew Barnaby calls a “as clean as it gets. Too bad for Bergeron he had his head down.” This, remarkably, from a player whose career was ended by a concussion. TSN analyst Bob MacKenzie got to the real point - Bergeron coming back into the game after being knocked woozy by Armstrong. “You've got a player who's clearly concussed. You don't need a neurosurgeon or neurologist to come in and talk to him. When you see a guy as wobbly on his feet as he was, then he comes back and plays and gets run up against the boards and gets his helmet knocked off, there's a pretty good chance this guy's suffered a concussion... If the team values that player... you take him out of the game...” Which led host James Duthie to be the only one on the panel to question Armstrong targeting the head on the hit. While nothing was decided, any TV discussion about head hits was unthinkable even a couple of years ago. And that is progress of a sort in a sport with a denial issue on head hits.

andrewberkshire's picture

Yeah I read that earlier. You're probably right. I am after all, going on memory instead of actually looking back at what was said. Either way, Bergeron shouldn't have been on the ice after that, because he was terrible, and he was an injury risk. When he got elbowed by one of the Thrashers on his next shift and his helmet flew off the first thing I thought was "there goes Gainey's latest signing for a couple months".

agreed fellow hab fan! Feels nice going through it civilized with another poster on here, lately it seems all I read or see is childish dribble or complete hatred for players/owners/managers, I tend to stay away from this site after a loss because the whole "were f$%#ed" philosophy after each game gets boring and annoying... I'm a realist and also a pretty cautious optimist when it comes to this team, I know we may not be the best overall team but I enjoy seeing the progress this team is making even though in my belief gainey hasn't done the best job as general manager but that's a different topic. I hope we do well although deep down I'm hoping we crash and pick in the top 5 at the draft and if we can, try and give Boston something (or alot, except for markov) for torontos pick to try and push them over the top for the playoffs ( not hoping they win it of course) but can you imagine how much we'd improve if we had 2 picks in the top 5 of next years draft!!?? That's our rebuild!! Lol my hopes and obviously very high and almost unreachable hopes but a couple beers have me wishing that would happen...

andrewberkshire's picture

Agreed about the nice civil discourse. Hablifting was also a treat to talk to tonight. I'm also cautiously optimistic about this team, I think we have the pieces to be competitive if we build up the chemistry that Martin believes we can build up, here's hoping. As far as the possibility of two lottery picks, oh if only we could somehow swing that! Unfortunately I don't think we have anything besides Markov that could pry that Toronto pick from Boston.

Anyhoo, left a few questions afore headin to work and lo!

"Lord Bugs Potter has a few questions. The answers are, 1)yes, Tanguay is healed from his shoulder injuries. At least that is what he, his people and the Lightning are saying. 2)The Vinny trade rumors are certainly squashed for right now. But check back in December and analyze how the team and Vinny are doing. 3)And management is very happy with coach Rick Tocchet's methods."

Pretty basic, I know, but hey, I'm a Mtl boy. Do with it as you will...

So Sergei is either on the block for any takers or Bob has assured him that his spot back in Montreal is waiting for him.

Im not sure which it is but I dont think he has much trade value and we do need him playing up to his ability and staying out of trouble. So Im 50-50 on which it is.

SK74 out west for Arythukin (R2KIN).  Trade a Russion who isn't living up to his potential for another Russian who isn't living up to his potential...but at least R2KIN has size, and can hit (just ask Tanguay)!

This is what Laviolette,  TSN's newest anaylist/fired coach who cant find a NHL job, has to say about the Kozlov hit on Gomez:

No suspension. The penalties served the purpose. And if that wasn't enough, Scott Gomez answered the question himself. It was hardly a push and also, it looked like Gomez may have propelled himself a little bit.

No one seems to get it, the rest of the league has figured the habs out.  Just knock down Gomez like they did to Koivu and they can shut the team down.  Gomez is so small it doesn't take much, even the other teams' smallest players can beat up on our 16 goal a year superstars!  And I agree with the other poster the other day, our team makes the worst NHL goalies seem like superstar goalies!  Heck we could probably convince the other teams to play elementary school goalies and our 16 goal a year superstars probably would just as they do now pass the puck to the goalie!

idle's picture

I guess he thinks that late in a close game when the Habs were on a 5 game loosing streak and the pressure was mounting and Gomez is forchecking and trying to force a turnover he has time to worry about "propelling himself a little bit" into the bordes to try and get Kozlov in trouble.

andrewberkshire's picture

It's a shame, I like Laviolette but he's dead wrong. Shoving a clearly off-balance player into the board from behind should be an automatic suspension.

JIMVINNY's picture

I agree, but I think in this case, Gomez stumbled trying to recover from the shove.  Semantics, I know, but I don't think it was a vicious hit by any means.  There was a lot more intent to injure by Armstrong, and he didn't even receive a minor penalty.  It reminds me of a hit by O'byrne against the leafs last year, where O'byrne was ejected for elbowing, because the leaf player stumbled as O'byrne hit him, and had his face driven into the boards.  O'byrne was given the game misconduct, but no further discipline.

Had it been a habs player guilty of the cross-check, I would definitely feel that no suspension was warranted, and judging by the look on Kozlov's face as he let Gomez throw punches, he regretted the action, and I don't believe that there was any intent to hurt Gomez.  It was just a minor penalty gone wrong.  Now, had Gomez been hurt, I would feel a LOT different.

andrewberkshire's picture

Definitely no intent to injure by Kozlov, he's not that kind of player, but I think the league has to have a zero tolerance policy on hits from behind. Kozlov should have seen the numbers on the jersey and NOT pushed because of where they were on the ice.

__________________________________________

http://berkshireonthehabs.blogspot.com/

JIMVINNY's picture

I'll agree with that.  I guess in my opinion, the priority should be in getting the head shots out of the game.  Things like the hit on MAB, and on Toews tonight.

andrewberkshire's picture

I think the one on Toews tonight was legal, especially since Toews himself said he had his head down. Also he seemed to injure his torso on the play, not his head. I only saw it once though so maybe it was worse than i thought.

__________________________________________

http://berkshireonthehabs.blogspot.com/

pic1983's picture

For me though, it all comes back to respect.  Jonathan Toews is tough as nails (although I know his injury record wouldnt indicate that) and a good canadian boy who believes in the physicality of hockey.  I'm not surprised that he would say that he had his head down, and has to be more careful.

However, he was skating up ice, and Mitchell was coming out of the box. Toews had no way of seeing mitchell coming, and mitchell didnt just knock toews off the puck, he checked toews with intent to injure.  Same thing with the Weight hit on brandon sutter, and the dion phaneuf hit on kyle okposo.  Legal or not, they just werent necessary.  I know it's hard to create a penalty for these kinds of hits because you don't want to take hitting out of the game, but the players have to respect each other.  Im sure Dion Phaneuf wouldnt be happy if someone caught him with his head down, and ended his career, so he should take that into consideration when he's lining up a vulnerable opponent.  Same thing with colby armstrong.  He looks for small guys along the boards down low in the defensive zone, barrels in from the blueline, and drives his shoulder into the unsuspecting players head with clear intent to injure.  There is no need for that in hockey, and life is never the same after you've had a severe concussion.

123456's picture

i do not think the hiot on gomez deserves a suspension, but at the same time recall pleks got two games last year... but one can argue either way - he already got a five min in OT - that's a sever penaly... but also since a five minute major was handed out why not suspend?? let's just win games one at a time and move on!!

Chorske's picture

Disgusting.

I don't see how that doesn't fall under "attempt to injure". It's not part of the game, despite what the open-ice hit keep-your-head-up apologists might say. And now my Hawks are without one of their top guns.

This may come across as unpatriotic, but I hate Vancouver almost as much as I hate Toronto.

---Chorske's Rule #1: as the Habs' lead in any given game increases, the probability of a HIO poster predicting an imminent Stanley Cup championship approaches one.

JIMVINNY's picture

Devastating.  Hate to see that.  Soon enough, someone will be seriously injured, a la broken neck, or even worse, someone is going to die.  The players are just so much bigger, stronger and faster then they used to be, and the rules have to be changed.  I just hope it's not too late when they do.

24 Cups's picture

JV - Agreed.  It's a waste of time to debate the legality of the hit.  It's the total lack of respect out on the ice that is the real problem.

pic1983's picture

Agreed.  I just said that in a reply to berkshire above.

Its a shame that players cant put themselves in the other players shoes, and think about how they would like being caught with their head down and getting a serious concussion.

Did anybody count how many great scoring opportunities the Canadians missed yesterday.

I think there were 3 cossbars and 2 goalposts hit, as well as 2 or 3 open nets that either

Plekanec or Kostitsyn missed. I figure the score could've been 6, 7, or 8 to 1.
