Price to start

posted by Pat Hickey at 12h30 EST on Nov 3

Carey Price will start in goal tonight. It's his first start at the Bell Centre since Oct. 17 when he was on the short end of a 3-1 count against Ottawa.

5-0 tonight....CP's time to shine has arrived.

I think the frustration with Price alot are feeling is justified because a goalie we used that high a pick on has to be a game changer, anything less ia a bust. At this point in his development, for whatever the reason, he's not, or at least not consistently enough. The frustration is compounded because the man we all trusted to be able to expertly read the situtaion (BG)made him our go to guy when we were as succesful as we had been in 15 years, and he wasn't totally ready. It's been all down hill ever sense, and many are tired of waiting for what we thought we were promised. That being said, I'm all Team Carey and while it's great whenever the team wins I'd rather see Price be succesful than Halak.

Big mistake. Halak should start.

If we were playing Sanford and Carey was in the minors ripping it up you'd say that Sanford stinks and we should be playing Price. Can I get a fries with that burger?

Carey isnt ripping it up anywhere.Sanford is.

HardHabits's picture

MAB was also ripping up the AHL, but he's out of place in the NHL, same as Sanford would be. Give the Dogs credit for playing a great team game. Sanford could make a good back-up if Price or Halak get's traded but as it stands they need to be platooned to give them the opportunity to play. I'll change my fries to a poutine.

Folks, let's relax with all the BS about Price & Halak.

While neither of our goalies is likely to be a Vezina candidate this year, both have shown strong talent.  Even this year, each has won some games on his own - and both have had stretches in the past where they have been a dominating force on the team.  The potential is there, and it's not rare that we see solid games from these guys. With save percentages nipping at the 9.00 mark, it's true that each can (and has) played a bit better, but they have a brand new team in front of them, and sometimes been hung out to dry - and not all goalies get off to a good start (ahem, Roberto Luongo).

All that taken together, of all the positions on this team I am least worried about our goaltending.  It's usually better than the rest of the team.  Is that saying much?  I dunno... you tell me.  Overall I think Price and Halak are both good young goaltenders and I'd rather have them at around $1 million than some of the overpriced verterans (cough - Toskala... Huet - cough) that a lot of teams have shot their wad on.  And these guys (like Fleury) if handled well will continue to get better.   It's a better bet than spending all your money on an over-hyped veteran... besides we did that with Gomez.  Dang!  I was trying to be good.  Couldn't resist.

Sakattack's picture

I'm glad to see that BOTH goalies are getting chances to play so far this year and that both have usually kept the team in the game - at which point, yes, it is up to the rest of the guys out there.

I'm also interested in seeing Carle play. I like that they are calling up different guys from Hamilton, it gives them a chance to see what each of them can do at the NHL level, spreads out some NHL experience between a larger group of the farm team and shows the rest of them that their time will come too if they work hard enough.

Finally, I'm not sure how I missed this but someone below mentioned that our old friend #8 has scored on his new team twice already this year. I found this video on youtube showing the two goals. That's more goals than he scored on them in a Habs uniform! Go Mike!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEEGl5ce1FY

Hockey Socks's picture

The only knock I have on Price is that when the game is on the line, it doesn't seem like he's playing with any urgency. I guess there's a good side to always being calm under pressure, but when the other team is playing with desperation and firing on all cylinders, I kind of expect the goalie to put in that extra effort to slide across the net, cover every angle, make that impossible save. I rarely see Price do that. His lateral movements are often slow and he doesn't show much emotion.

Other great goalies like Luongo, Brodeur, Roy, and even newer guys like Fleury (hell even Halak) show this trait as well. Maybe Price is different, I don't know, but it just makes me nervous.

In JM we trust.

N.B.habs fan's picture

Don't fret on Price, most of it has to do with the team in front of him.

SmartDog's picture

And then afterwards Price calmly says 'yeah, a few of those shots got by me... I dunno, it was a tough game'.  Is the guy on valium or does he just have a psychopathic personality?  It's good to be relaxed but if you don't up-tempo along with the game, the game starts going faster than you.

andrewberkshire's picture

Smart dog did you see the post game reaction by Price after the Chicago game on TSN? He was absolutely furious. Not calm at all. The guy is extremely competitive.

Puzzling stat...Toronto has the best PP in the league (28%)

... and the worst PK (66.7%).

lavie's picture

I just have one word to say to Price: CONCENTRATE!!!

Xtrahabsfan's picture

Price and Halak are no way near no: 1 goalie material...they are learning their trade and have a long journey ahead.I'm sure the pressure of the fans premature expectations of either net minder is  whats screwing them up....Have a good game Carey and enjoy it....Go Habs Go

RiverviewCanadien's picture

So I see all the excuses are already being made for "The Franchise"...

Look Price is good and so is Halak, their job is to stop pucks no matter what happens in front of them. I agree neither has been BRILLIANT this year, but for posters to come on here and already make excuses in case they lose, that is weak people...

I think I am spot on when I say this:
They Win = Price being the MAN
They Lose = Team in front of Price, no one will blame him even though IT IS HIS JOB!!!!

Personally I think it will be a good game and EVERYONE will play well.

DillyDalley's picture

So when an opposing player is stuck to the goalie like white on rice, is not the D's job to move that player out of the way so that the goalie can see?

"Truth! You can't handle the Truth"

StevieRay's picture

I can't agree with you on Price thinking ...However .. I echo your thoughts on the game tonite .That would be a real treat wouldn't it ! We could stand a regulation win instead of this OT ..shootout crap .

RiverviewCanadien's picture

How so, people below are already saying he is ONLY as good as the team in front of him, D this D that, hanging him out to dry, etc, etc, etc...I really think what I posted is the mentality that ALOT of posters here feel...

TripleX's picture

Lol, it is funny to read some of these posters.  Kinda like the fans that post to those boy band sites like the Jonas Brothers.  Their idols can do no wrong and failures are a result of some outside influences sabotaging them.

I hope Price is fantastic and becomes everything forecasted for him.  Unfortunately, I just don't see it.  I see an athlete with tremendous potential but lacking the mental attitude required of an elite goalie.  The problem with Price is between the ears, and that can only be fixed by Price.

ps.  Price drafted No.5 in first round

Pavelich drafted No.41 in second round of SAME draft

Who would you take?  Watch the game tonight and give me an honest opinion?  I know who I would have drafted.

StevieRay's picture

Halak  .893 save % &   Price .889 save % only .004 separartion .. you would think by the way some posters are going on about Halak ... he was stopping every shot ! ... not so ..

Price is # 1

Martin to me is handling both goalies very poorly .. was he like this in Ottawa and Florida .. I didn't pay much attention to his handling of his goalies then .

Go get em  Carey !

Hayward4Price's picture

Can't blame JM.  I think he has not had much luck with goalies thus far.  It's not like he ever coached a Marty Brodeur.  He is in the same position now.  Neither goalie is a clear #1 so you got to try to keep them both fresh, involved and competitive.  He is feeling them out trying to see what will work and push their buttons...I got no problem with that.

Harani's picture

Les-Habitants's picture

Let's go Price!!  Remeber how long Fleury took to fully develop? Price is similar, and look how the patience with Fleury has paid off.  Price is the franchise goaltender of this team.

Price is similar to Fleury.......how ?

lavie's picture

Hallelujah. Cool down, bud.

smiler2729's picture

Our goalies are only as good as the team in front of them.

That and the ability to make a key save at a key juncture is huge toward team morale within the game. Carey's problem has been not making that save when the team needed it most.  His timing on when to make that great save is a result of too many thoughts in his head - he's worrying. You can tell too, same with Jaroslav Halak, their body language is key to how their game will go.

Hated as he is for reasons unknown to me, but Hal Gill is one guy that I feel, as a goalie, gives CP and JH a calming reassurance. Paul Mara too. The big guys, slow as they seem to be, have a different approach to their game as d-men and are more often than not, in position and ready to defend anything anytime. In the past, rambunctious types (such as Frankie Bouillon, Patrice Brisebois and Mike Komisarek) seemed to be running around trying to make plays and not screw up all at the same time causing a stressful mess in front of the goalie more often than not.

DillyDalley's picture

All the times CP has been hung out to dry this season, "HE DON'T TRUST HIS DEFENSE" Can U blame him? That is why he is always thinking and sometimes over playing a shot to get the rebound clear of the D cause CP konws the D can't clear the puck unless it is off the glass or boards which leads to a delay of game penalty.

CP don't trust his D. The D don't trust CP. Well the later have no one to balme but them selves. CP has made more than enough saves to allow the Habs to get a good lead to win a game.....

Re BHG: I 100% agree...

The man is this years scapegoat and through not much fault of his own.

While he is much maligned for his apparent lack of hitting, I imagine that most hits would be deemed illegal as he'd need to be on his knees most times to make a legal hit. Yes he's slow and yes his +/- is not where it should be, but he's broken up plays more times than I can count and is a good penalty killer. He does need to be managed both as a stay-at-homer and minutes, but he fulfills his role... when his minutes come down.

... the 'A' on his shirt doesn't stand for Awful.

No Kovalchuck and CP to shut-out tonight.

Habs 3-0. Gionta scores a pair.

Bugs's picture
Disagree. Goalies are sometimes better than the teams in front of them (sure there are examples) and sometimes, they're worse than the teams in front of them (sure there are other examples). This even line of talent spread across the whole roster seems kinda narrow-minded to me. Lots of players are MUCH better than other players in the NHL. Some of those players are goalies...

Agree about Gill and Mara, though.

Mara's not that slow actually... no speed demon but prolly around team average (factoring Lats, Gill, Hamr & BGL)

I play goalie and my best defencemen are the stay-at-home types a la Brad Marsh/Hal Gill, I love those guys, they live for playing defence. We have a smooth skating offensive type defenceman but he is so quick he never gets caught up.

As for CP31/JH41, Marc-Andre Bergeron would give me gray hairs on the spot, he's so undependable. Gill, Mara, even O'Byrne, the big guys are DEPENDABLE.

Yeah but he won. That's the thing with the Halakanator. We've seen it with our own eyes for nigh on three years. He may not be the best, may not be as technically sound as the Priceberg, but he WINS.

Halak's career record : 35-23-2 = .600

Price's career record : 49-33-13 = .584

Difference is statistically insignificant and your argument that Halak WINS is refuted.

Bugs's picture
To refute means to defeat an argument with unassailable facts, Smiss. You just proved I was right.

Am I missing something?

Well... I guess I did prove that Halak wins because he has 35 wins so in a way I proved what you said was right... touché.

I also proved that he doesn't necessarily rack up more points than Price. If Halak loses his next game and Price wins, they have the same win %. (.590 vs. .589)

Yes, but OB's was one for the ages. Komo will have to put 10 in off his head to equal that one.

Good to see Ryan back on ice though. If Steve Smith got past his epic brain cramp in 86 to become a good D-man, there's hope for OB yet.
