Coach Jacques Martin provided a host of medical updates after the morning skate.
Hal Gill will be out for several weeks but it's not related to the shot he took in the foot at practice yesterday,. Martin said Gill has been playing through a leg injury for the past three weeks and doctors have advised him to shut it down. He'll be replaced by Mathieu Carle, who makes his NHL debut tonight against Atlanta.Carle will be paired with Marc-André Bergeron but Martin said both players could find themselves with different partners in the course of the game.
Matt D'Agostini has been diagnosed with a concussion, resulting from a hit by Chicago's Andrew Ladd last Friday. The diagnosis means that he must sit out for at least a week.
Ryan O'Byrne, who suffered a strained knee on Oct. 3, has resumed skating on his own. The team is expecting him back at the end of November but he's hoping to come back sooner.
Georges Laraque remains day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
And defenceman Andrei Markov is making progress after tearing tendons in his left leg in the season opener on Oct. 1. He has been working out on the bike and doing weights and remains on schedule for a return in February.
On D'Agostini, has there been any indication about a suspension to Ladd ?
Any news at all ?
Attention Hal Gill Haters:
Is a player playing through what sounds like severe leg pain still a coward because he cant hit or skate etc..
Get Well Soon Hal, we need the big healthy body back on the blue line.
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
we really dont need him back anytime soon, he cant handle the puck and he is way too slow and takes way too many penalties because he is so slow.
Does anyone notice that everyone's injuries are stated pretty specifically, but Laraque's are always "an upper body injury" or "a lower body injury". I don't get it.
...........
"To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high."
I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.
Everybody knows what he has, so they dont even have to identify it anymore. haha
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
MAB and Carle together? That can't last very long. I tend to agree that spliting Hammer and Spacek would be smart.
Hammer-Gorges
Spacek-Carle
MAB-Mara
This is the PERFECT season so far.
We know this is a transition year. Do we know what that means? Enough has been written about blowing up a core like Bob did last year. I promised myself no expectations of this team this season. All these inuries would hurt any team in the NHL, and we're not the only ones with stars out of the lineup... so I don't see that ask any excuse for sucking. We dumped 1/2 the team last year, nothing says we can't dump another 1/4. This team has nothing to prove to me until next year.
AK46= new kind of cement, dries in 5-6 minutes!
Gill, props..
While i make fun of AndreiK I hope he starts to pick it up... maybe Andrei's injured too, Havlat also has 1 goal..
Anyway, this is my last post about the team this year, I'll stick to nodding and shaking my head at everyone else that posts..
HIOers you rock.
playing injured for three weeks...gotta respect Gill for that. I wonder if it made Gill even slower than he normally is.
I Agree, leg injuries are the worst. A charlie horse can almost be unbearable let alone muscle damage or knee issues.
2009-2010 Return of the Habs
Gotta agree, Gill we all no is not the fastest man on the back end, but a leg injury to a defenseman especially really limits his mobility. Like you said gotta respect a guy for trying to play through an injury. Gill, hopefully returns fairly quickly and plays a better and hopefully a faster defense.
Maybe we can sign Briseboise and Dandy :P
Hey whats up with Belle? I thought he played alright. Would he not be the best candidate to fill Gill's absence? Just curious.
I think Belle deserves to be here, but it also speaks to our depth at D on the farm. Carle is getting his shot to proove he belongs now. Is PK next; personally I hope not!
I rank Belle ahead of OB on my depth chart, but fortunately for OB he was drafted by BG and not received in a trade for draft pick that GB never did like.
Seems to be a rotational call-up schedule on defense.

carle and bergeron? do we want to be scored on?
- we need a MARKOV.
Don't you guys see? This is all great news! The Habs finally realized how to win in the NHL! Instead of having a great start to the season and then tanking in January followed by injuries in the late/winter early spring thus eliminating any chance of success in the post-season, they're doing the opposite! By sucking hard in October and getting the injuries out of the way NOW, we can't possibly fail in the second half of the season! Surely this means the habs will excell well into the spring and not suffer any more injuries! Huzzah! Let's start the parade early folks! Rub it in everyone else's noses!
I like the news about Markov.
He'll be fresh and full of force for the Olympic games.
uhhh with all due respect to Russian hockey and to the Russia vs. Canada rivalry, I'll kill Markov if he goes and wastes himself at the Olympics, UNLESS...he uses the time to condition himself, where in that case i wouldn't be against the idea.
Anyways this season is a scratch for Habs.
On the other hand winning the Olympic gold is a kind of historical opportunity which appears once or twice in a player's life. Why not then?
I don't know if it's the number of NHL injuries this year or just the fact the big names are getting injured. Whatever it is, it's bizarre.
Even stranger is the degree to which the league is dragging its feet on the headshot issue. They don't have to start with an outright ban, but the blindsided hits to the head - i.e., where the player has absolutely no ability to defend himself because the hit is emanating from outside their peripheral vision - have got to stop. Not the checking, just the checks to the head. Nobody, other than your average sociopath, gets any satisfaction out of them.
(Unless the victim is Darcy Tucker, of course. He would fall under subsection 4D of the new rule regarding headshots; i.e., Headshots - Subsection 4D: Bla bla bla...with the exception of Darcy Tucker.)
Headshots where the victim is in a position to protect himself is a much more difficult rule to work around. In effect, you'd be encouraging players to skate end-to-end with their head down. Moreover, it would put taller players at a distinct disadvantage with respect to physical play. There will be a line drawn in the sand with regards to this debate.
The NHLPA's silence is even more deafening.
I'm no NHL expert, I just play one on the Internet. Show some leadership on the issue, Bettman, cause all I'm reading about these days is the really sweet deal the league's owners have fashioned for themselves in Phoenix. Even the most sophisticated hedge fund out there couldn't triangulate that kind of sugah.
JD
I agree that head shots need to be taken out. I couldn't believe what Grapes was saying on HNIC about it not being a bad hit on Dags. He even said it was the benches responsability to warn the player. Sure, warn him if you have a chance but I think it's the player's responsability not to hit someone on the head with their shoulder, elbow, arm etc... Gionta the other night had someone lined up and let him off the hook to avoid a headshot.
Hockey Canada has it in their rule book. Check to the Head is a 2 min minor and a 10 min misconduct or a 5 min major and a game misconduct. Works for me.
I would like to add Scott Hartnell to that exception. Otherwise good post.
Agreed, what's with the non-stance NHL/PA... where's the respect...
and how can you even think to treat Gretzky like that, shame on you NHL.

Looks like Hammer, Spacek, Gorges and Mara are going to be eating a LOT of minutes tonight, with both Carle and MAB playing in the mid teens, if not less. Which means, I bet Mara and Gorges are going to get double shifted. Hammer and Spacek might see minutes moving closer and closer to 30min...that's a lot. OB, we can use you buddy
oy oy oy oy oy.. Gill, Rhino and Markov down..
All right - now we lack size. Why not call up Shawn Belle instead?
Hamrlik - Spacek
Mara - MAB
Gorges - Belle
thoughts?
They already know what Belle provides, so if Carle doesn't cut it then Shawn can get the next game.
So far they've called up Weber, Belle and now Carle...3 young guys sitting on the fence. In the cases of Carle and Belle, they need to prove themselves this year.
Down the road, Martin and Gainey will have a better understanding of who to call up in the case of injury, or maybe even who to include in a trade. This will also help bigtime come the trade deadline.

And I thought he was pretty solid out there, despite his +/-
His +/- in Hamilton has always been pretty impressive; plus-19 last season if I remember correctly..
So let's see what Carlo's got.

My guess is their looking for a right handed stick Carle possess. I like Belle's size and speed. I think he would also be an asset on the PK. He may be up if Carle does not impress.
Good observation with the RH shot! Didn't think about that one.
I just worry about Carle + MAB together out there.
I'd rather go with Hamrlik, Spacek, Mara, Gorges, Carle, Belle combinations, but I guess we will need MAB on the PP ..
Markov, O'Byrne, now Gill... sheesh. That's half the starting defence corps from the season opener.
Does O'Byrne's return spell the end of MAB?
The Olympic starts on Feb. 12. We'll be seeing Markov after the Olympic. The Olympic break will give him a bit more time to get up to speed.
Personally if he is able to I hope he plays in the Olympics ...no better way of cathing up on the missed time than playing the top players in the world. He will be several months behind everyone else as far as conditioning, timing, etc goes and given the importance of the stretch run I would rather him do his "conditioning stint" while playing for a rival of us during the Olympics. Maybe he coughs a few pucks up while palying us and at the same time he works himself into shape and should be ready to rock once the stretch run begins.
Question: He was expected to be at the Olympics, does he play while he is is in the prime of his career? Or skip it to recover... I'd expect him to try to play if he can..
He's already said that he desperately wants to return in time for the Olympics. With the team that Russia has on paper, this could be the best shot at a Gold Medal that he will get in his career.
Any league word on action against Ladd for D'Ago?
if we haven't heard anything by now, it's severely doubtful that we will.

Gionta - Cammy - Gomez
AK46 - Plecs - SK74
Moen - Lapps - MaxPac
Chip - Metro - Laraque
Hammer - MAB
Spacek - Mara
Gorges - Carle
Price
I see things pretty much the same way. If SK74 remains healthy and produces we should see him here at some point. You can't really tell who he is playing with in Ham but from the theahl.com my guess is with Maxwell. I like how Laps has provided speed and grit on the right side, and it is timed with what I see as a much improved game from Chips over the 10 games. Having these 2 players contributing to our 3rd and/or 4th lines for many more years will be just as important as our top 2 lines producing.
Camm - Gomez - Gio
AK46 - Pleks - SK74
Lats - Metro - Laps
MaxPac - Chips - Moen
I interpret JM's comments about MAB and Carle that they will see 5th/6th dman minutes and may not really play much together.
Why Richard Gere? Kinda hard to take you seriously with that pic... oh and SK74 and BGL in the lineup.
Ummm
Laraque is hurt.
Metro has been the stabalizing force for MaxPac.
SK74 is hurt and doing time in Hamilton
And MAB on the first line pairing is justa bad idea.
Sergei is no longer hurt. He's played the last two games for Hamilton.

Ahh..my Hamilton knowledge betrays me again!
MAB should be paired with a good D player (not necc first pair)
SK74 hurt is better then Latts healthy
Laraque is DTD
Swap Metro with Moen and have Chip FO
This would be nice
I would call up Le Bon Serge, but not at the Tenderness' expense. he played a great game on the wing with Lapierre and Plekanec and i'm glad that he's getting his shot, especially on the powerplay with Gionta and Gomez.
With Travis Moen in the lineup, and seeing our new team toughness evolving in a splendid way (see Gorges, Josh, and Chipchura, Kyle), I'd send down Greg Stewart so that he can actually get some ice time. I'm pretty sure he's still eligible to be sent down without riding the waiver wire.
Cause SK74 is tearing up the AHL with his 6 points? Actually, I would like to see him back up here, I think.

Last year I would never have said this, but I am really hoping for O'Byrne to be back sooner than the end of November!
Don't build him up too much. High expectations are what kills young players like O'Byrne who haven't proven anything yet.
In JM we trust.
Wonder if he'll be good for the Olympics? That'll be a great level of competition for him to get back into the swing of things. Of course I hope he scores in his own net, and not Canadas

he's from BC....
G-I-O
When he stole the purse in Florida, there were concerns he would not be able to travel into the states to play. So how can he play for the USA Olympics?
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey...

You still plagiarizing?

Carle AND MAB?!?! Looks like a recipe for disaster in our own end. Poor Pricey...always has to make up for stupid mistakes. Several weeks for Gill? I think this will hurt more than we expect it to. I'm telling you MAB cannot play 5-on-5. And it will ultimately drain out Hammr and Spatch. I would rather call Belle back up and dress 7D.
