Thrashers' Rich Peverley scores his team's second goal of the game against Canadiens' Carey Price Tuesday night. Phil Carpenter, The Gazette

Gazette Preview | Tuesday's NHL Schedule | Matchups | Mike Boone's Game Blog and About last night ... | Pat Hickey's game story

AUDIO: Jacques Martin | Carey Price I, II and III | Mike Cammalleri | Brian Gionta | Jaroslav Spacek

• At a Glance: It was a see-saw game that saw the Atlanta Thrashers blow 3-1 and 4-3 leads before eventually defeating the Canadiens 5-4 Tuesday night. Ondrej Pavelec, who was coming off a 50-stop performance in Ottawa, allowed four goals on 38 shots, but was one better than Carey Price, who was making his first start at home since Oct. 17. Price allowed five goals on 30 shots, but could not be faulted on several of the Atlanta goals. Bryan Little, Rich Peverly, Mark Popovic, Pavel Kubina and Colby Armstrong scored for the Thrashers. Brian Gionta scored a pair of goals for the Canadiens, who also got goals from Michael Cammalleri and Tomas Plekanec.

• Key Moments: Twice Montreal tied the game in the third period, and both times, the Thrashers wasted little time replying, with Colby Armstrong scoring the game winner only 34 seconds after Tomas Plekanec had scored to make it 4-4.

• What It Means: The Canadiens lost for the first time in six games at home, dropping to 5-3 at the Bell Centre.

• What's Next: The Canadiens travel to Boston for a game Thursday against their division rival, the Bruins. They return to Montreal to finish the week with a game against Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Alex Tanguay and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Oh, and the Bolts also have Steven Stamkos.

Ok..thanks Robert! wherever you are.

Chris, not sure if you will see this, but a big THANK YOU for that link to debunking that myth about the French Canadian rule! I get so tired of listening to so many anti - Hab bozos trying to pass that one by me.

Habs  'come up short' vs Thrashers.....oh my oh my LMAO

Freudian slip!

Short Ha, ha, ha, ha,

Didn't the Princess look good & both teams defense absolutely shut down the others' offence. Ahem.

What do the Leafs and The Titanic have in common?
- They both look good until they hit the ice.

Do you know how many leafs it takes to win the Stanley Cup?
- No? Me neither.

Why is the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto?
- It's the only way the Stanley Cup will ever be in Toronto.

Why don't the Maple Leafs drink tea?
- Because the Canadiens have all the cups.

Whats the difference between the Leafs and a cigarette machince?
- The cigarette machince has PLAYER'S.

The only way I see Price ever becoming a solid goalie is to learn desperation.  He needs to stop going down hoping he's got the angle , he's gotta start making some saves with his reflexes. I know he's a big boy but this whole butterfly with him....I don't think he get's it. Needs more oomph in his game....Can he be sent down to Hamilton anymore? does he need to clear waivers or anything, sorry for my lack of knowledge.

SmartDog's picture

Exactly. Price has thecore tools, and on goood games he has the little bit extra that makes him stop shots that other goalies wouldn't.  But lately he's been more by-the-book... less inspired.  It's Rocky versus the giant blond Russian robot.  Halak is Rocky.

If only the NHL would stop thinking with their pocketbook and start using their heads.

Any thoughts on the Kessel hit last night? The gloves came up high.

Personally, I think it could have been a lot worse than it was. Kessel took one right in the chops from Ohlund and he could be concussed today, but since he came back last night apparently it's not a head shot. This hypocrisy between 'good hockey hits' and 'headhunting' is what makes all the controversy a complete joke.

He let it one bad goal.  The 4th and 5th goals were total screw ups by our defence.  The 5th was lack of effort by MAB.  I can't fault Carey for this loss.  We have three regular D-Men out and its beginning to show.  All in all that was a very poor effort by the D.  I was yelling "Man behind you !!" as loud as I could on the fourth goal.  I guess I didn't yell loud enough.  When you team allows cross crease passes your goalie is dead in the water.

HardHabits's picture

He should've had the 1st goal. He went down early again and should've stood up and challenged the shooter a la Brodeur. That goal doesn't go in we're not having this discussion. But that's not the issue. Carey has no oomph. He is too non-chalant and gives no impression of being the bit determined. He's a slacker. Little talent and work beat talent with little work all the time. Is Price more talented than Halak? Yes. Is he better? No!

HABS_ADDICT_69's picture

Really, how could Price challenge the shooter when he was behind the net? LAMO

Absolutely love Chelios, but.......we need a good defencman with young legs.  One who can log a lot of minutes.  Much as I love Chelios, he would not help us all that much.

Kooch7800's picture

I would not say this game was Carey's fault. I would blame poor team defense.  I would also not say Carey had a good game either. We need to ride one goalie for awhile for confidence in the team. Our secondary scoring other thank Pleck's and Metro is a joke

sholi2000.com's picture

The Price bashing is out in full force today.

You fans are lucky the score wasn't 9 -4 Thrashers.

Defense failed.  It happens, but it just so happens it fails when Carey is in net.

I have patience, so should you.

They call me Shane

TripleX's picture

So play Price against the Bruins.  PLEASE!  The Bruins have not scored in two games so if we lose, maybe it might have a little to do with Price?

i know every goal scored on him was impossible to stop and not his fault.  I know the team always lets poor Carey down.  I know bad  bounce goals always plague only Carey.

So start Carey against a bad Bruins team that has not scored in two games.  In fact, play Price every game left this season.  Why not?  He is never at fault, makes all the saves possible and it is the fault of the rest of the team.

Makes perfect sense to me.  Woohoo, I finally am on the same page as you and Bob.

sholi2000.com's picture

You are way out of control.  Have patience young fella.

They call me Shane

I hope Carey Price is not the anti-Jack Morris. Morris was a baseball pitcher primarily with the Twins and Tigers. He didn't always have the best ERA but he was a winner. If you gave Jack 2 runs, he would limit the

opposition to one run. If you scored 7 runs for Jack he would limit the opposition to 6 runs.

Carey seems to be giving the opposition one more goal than we score. Start winnings some games Carey!!

The Price is too high. How many points is he going to cost the Habs before something is done? Three points:

1) The claim that Price should 'not be faulted' for most of the goals he lets in is pretty hard to justify in itself, but when he lets in, say, 5 or 7 goals in a single game, it approaches absurdity. What special kind of goals could Price be 'faulted' for? Are they the same kind of goals that Halak could be 'faulted' for? As many other posters have said before in this space, Price should be judged on whether or not the Habs win when he is in net.

2) Claims made in favour of Price that are based on a belief in his 'potential' are not falsifiable. To those who do make such claims - I'd like to know what Price would have to do to get you to abandon your belief in his potential. And what about Halak's potential?

3) Price lost his last seven games last season, and so his record in his last 15 games is something like 2-13, with neither win in regulation. I know it's unfair to point this out for various reasons, but it's still true, and I think it is relevant when you consider how long Price has gone without a strong win, and what impact that will have on the team.

If the defence of Price's dominant status is going to be continued in spite of his actual record, pretty soon we're going to have to start calling him a 'storied' goaltender, the same euphemism used by the CBC to justify its bias in favour of the Leafs in spite of the fact that they've been losers for over four decades. Presumably someone somewhere can be 'faulted' for that.

Mrs.Price31's picture

I'm srry but i believe that a goalie should be faulted because of his play, not if the team wins with him or not. thts like saying kovalchuck is a fail because the thrashers havent won the cup yet..... i dont agree with your way of thinking. what about halak's potential? wat about the bashing you guys give Price all the time? Halak has it easy, he doesn't have to play all the time. make him play one whole season and we shall see wat type of potential he has. he plays 4 good games and then SUCKS! when defense plays good, goalie plays good. cuz then the goalie feels more confident. whcich was exactly wat happned in the first period yesterday. but then....defense screwed up, and so did he. once again, Carey hasnt played one game this season in which he faced less than 30 shots. halak AHAS numerous times. Nuff said

Q: What did Komisarek do when the Leafs won the cup?

A: He turned off his Xbox 360

GO HABS GO

GO #31 GO!!!!! i believe in 25

sholi2000.com's picture

The thing is when Halak plays and plays poorly, hardly anyone faults him for it.  But when Carey plays poorly, the entire gang shows up to bash the fella.

We definitely deserve some diversity. Like a diverse defense. A diverse offense. Some diverse goaltending. Habs fans deserve better!!! What we don't deserve is 9th or 10th place finish. Please BG if the team doesn't look like they can go deep in the playoffs let alone make them, firesale the team and bottom out the conference. The only way to the top is via the bottom.

habfan53's picture

A couple of thoughts

1) Carey Prices problems began when Gainey let Huet go for a 2nd rounder then thru Price into the pressure of the playoffs with no mentor and NOBODY to learn from.

2) Markov will make a difference but the rest of the team HAS to be more responsible

3) LEAVE SUBBAN IN HAMILTON  over the last year most of you argured that Price, Obyrne, Latandresse and Sergei would have been better off with a years experience.

4) Leave a second line intact gor more than 3/4 shifts I liked Pleks, Lapierre and Latendresse last night

5) For all of you waiting for O'Byrne's return I wll wait to pass judgement

6) Poor off season decisions  Gill was supposed to provide WHAT?  Should have kept Schneider he would have provided the point shot on the PP and isbetter than both Gill AND Bergeron

Dintrox's picture

6) Matt Schneider just returned from off season surgery. He missed 10 games and has 1 goal no assists in 5 games played. He wouldn't have helped us out very much in Sept - October because he just returned on Oct. 25.

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.

Bugs's picture
1) Incorrect. The Kid's problems began when he shanked that play with Lapierre in the playoffs against the Beaners.

2) Really? I thought they DIDN'T have to be reponsible.

3) Ah, what are prospects for if they don't replace guys who go down in the bigs?

4) Lookin good. Well...Plecky is.

5) Ok. I think he improved by leaps and bounds. Hope the injury hasn't set'm back.

6) Gill provides Reach and goaler defence. He's come through in that regard.

I am one of those guys who truly believed that Price was the cats ***, Patrick Roy potential. Hmm after a disappointing finish last year and the games he has played in this year (with the exception of the first two) he is not living up to his potential. Golatending is an issue, but the bigger issue is the defence. They are falling down, they are getting caught flat footed in our end zone and they are not covering the slot. Our offense is working hard and scoring crucial goals when needed, the defence is letting the team down. The question is do we have the skilled players we need or is it Jitters/nerves. I think there is some skill, Hamrlik, Georges, Markov.. the rest I am not certain as it appears game in game out too many mistakes are made. I think a trade is iminent and if I was Bob I would trade Price and SK/AK for a veteren back up goalie to Halak, another strong forward and the best defencemen you can find!

Seriously?  If McQuire was the GM I would honestly stop watching Habs games.  That guy knows ZERO about hockey. Prime example, did he not pick Boston to finish first in the east this year (yes he did)?  Did he not last year pick Montreal to finish first in the east(yes he did)?  If you think he is better than Gainey, a proven GM, maybe you should be a hockey broadcaster like McQuire on TSN.

jabber39's picture

What the heck does picking a team to finish first have to do with him being a good GM or not...count how many people picked montreal to even win the cup last year? Whats your point?

Knowing is Half the Battle...

Kooch7800's picture

My point is that He knows SQUAT!  The guy is a joke, every leaf game the guy drools over Komisarek, I hate to tell you, Komi SUCKS.  Montreal should be doing the Jig since he is gone.   Think about how bad we would be with Markov gone and komisarek's bad penalties and give aways...we would be a lot worse off.  Also,  this is the same guy who has been bashing Gomez and Gionta for their size....last time I checked they won a cup in Jersey....size was not an issue then...why would it be now?

Dintrox's picture

Mcguire has no experience as an NHL general manager. He worked as an assistant GM and briefly as the head coach of the Whalers in the early 90s. I don't want a newbie GM 'cause newbie coaches do not work out very well for the Habs.

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.

jabber39's picture

No Experience? He has a strong scouting background...he was schooled at the right schools...A Scotty Bowman disciple...wokred under Brian Burke are you kidding me? He has more contacts than most in the NHL....He's far from a newbie GM...How could you compare a GM position that Mcguire would take to rookie coaches? Ask yourself who hired those coaches first!

Knowing is Half the Battle...

Dintrox's picture

He worked as an assistant coach and scout for the Pens for 2 years. He worked as a coach for the whalers for 1 season. He worked for Scotty for 2 years and he is a disciple?? By the way Burke spent a year in Hartford and was fired. So McGuire is a Burke Disciple too?

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.

Double post, sorry.

The D was terrible last night but will improve when Markov comes back and hopefully OB will continue what he showed in preseason.

We definitely are missing some punch on the second line and maybe it is time to give SK74 his last chance.

He has some grit , he can skate, pass, and score but does have a tendency to take stupid penalties.

Maybe he can help his bro out of his funk, we should find out as soon as possible, if not trade them both if anybody wants them.

It's mind-boggling because Price USED to have an amazingly fast glove hand when he was first coming up.

Why does everyone insist on Belle, Carle or Webber? Last I checked, Andre Benoit was doing better than all of them and has more experience. Not NHL experience, of course, but experience nonetheless!

We want to do better defensively? Benoit is a +5. It might not translate too much in an NHL game but maybe it would...I don't know why he isn't getting a shot.

BosKibbles's picture

Benoit was spectacular in the Calder Cup run, I always liked him as a darkhorse. That said, Belle was fine in his last callup. I don't think the Habs should be trying to bring up 4 or 5 different D's from Hamilton like a game of musical chairs.

KGB_AKA4787's picture

The PRICE is wrong, Halak would of been the better choice last night in nets, It just seems that he's overrated way above his potential liability as a goaltender here in MTL, although the goals were not all his fault, the D was weak yesterday, Carle was way nervous for his first game, i counted him fall like 3 times on his *** without being touched, they should of called up shawn belle the kid IS built with speed and he's ready to play the NHL level.

This team has scoring punch thats not really the problem, the first line will get it going every single time jacques needs to change the momentum, bob really needs to get a good scoring winger for plecky who has been absolutly our best player so far this season, too bad Kositsyn doesn't use his talent it looks as if he's to shy on the team, and i dont blame the guy, he the only russian in the dressing room right now and doesn't really have anyone to communicate with on the ice the guy bearly speaks english, we should give SK one more chance to play with his brother or trade both of em....

latest rumors Forsberg with the Habs?

crabvader's picture

To be a goaltender in Montreal, you need to be a freak of nature. You need to love challenges. You need to be a Patrick Roy prototype. You need to be amazing. Price is amazing but he is crumbling under the pressure of playing here. He does not yet have what it takes to steal some games. Of course, it doesn't help that the defence leaves him out to dry all of the time...but we've thrived off of goaltenders who can make those HUGE saves in the past and we find ways to win when the goaltender is THAT good. I have yet to see Price make any jaw-dropping saves this year. He seems to be doing the bare minium to get by... It's a shame really.

I'd say bring up SK also but I'm sure Habs management doesn't want to look "soft" by going back on their "firm" stance they took with him. I'd solicitate Shanahan...Hey 800k a year and a guy who doesn't f--- around? I'll take it.

Habs D left Price to defend for himself last night. Price needs to get away for awhile and be himself. Give him a few days off and let him go on a vacation somewhere. Man O man does Price need to find his confidence soon. His play has been sub par this season so far IMO. Habs needs to make a few changes to their lineup by calling up a few D in Subban, Belle and SK74. Send Carle back down and try these lines in Boston.

1st line- Gionta- Gomez- Cammalleri

Hamrlik- Spacek

2nd line- AK46- Plekanec- SK74

Mara- Georges

3rd line- Moen- Metropolit- Lapierre

Belle- Subban

4th line- Lantendresse- Chipchura- Paceroity

MAB

The D was terrible last night but will improve when Markov comes back and hopefully OB will continue what he showed in preseason.

It's curious to me how the "D leaves the Kid to himself" but somehow feels greater sense of solidarity when Halak is net. You know, cuz Halak WINS and all.

So assuming this is truly the case, there are two avenues to take in order to augment our winning percentages,

1) Work on the mysterious Priceberg abandonement with the whole team.

2) Nip the whole thing in the bud and play Halak who, apparently, doesn't seem to mind being abandoned. You know, cuz he WINS.

It's a dilly, no question. I am confident the right avenue will have been chosen in the end.

i dont like the idea of calling down subban either but in this context it might be a good diea to have him play here for about a month or so until either hall gill or O B show up. and i completely agree on the calling of shawn belle. he is far better defensively than MAB. habs need to worry less about offence, as our first two lines will always find ways to score a few goals. also, MAB might be a good idea for the 4th line winger and pp specialist a la streit.

I can't believe you were watching the game last night. Price was excellent in the first period and matched the other goalie save for save. but the defense was horrible. how many times were they caught banging away at the puck but unabale to clear. The Atlanta goals mostly came from scrambles where no one was covering in front of Price and he couldn't be everywhere. Many people are saying he needs to build his confidence but he really needs to have a reliable defense in front of him. without that, the habs are doomed.

"The Habs were great ONLY when they had the rights to all of the French players in Quebec. Since that rule was changed they only won 2 cups!"

So,which Cups, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986 and 1993 aren't figured into your count?

Good point Today's generation of hab fans should have to write and sucessfuly pass testing to qualify as a true certified hab fan. They finding themselves singing the na na na song far too early in games and don't know their history well enough to know when they won cups.

"finding themselves singing the na na na song far too early in games"

so stupid! 4 minutes left in a 2 goal game saturday night and theyre singing that song.  Then last night, we got this great go habs go chant going and they actually scored to tie up the game at 4! Then the fans come back with the stupid "ole ole" chant, and they get scored on! I hate that ole chant.

Im starting a petition to ban the Olé song! This isn't soccer! Lets keep it to Go Habs go, or chants taunting the opposing teams players, those seem to work well for us!

(obviously the ole chant isnt the reason atlanta scored, they scored because we're defensively incompetent, but i still hate that chant)

Like every other fan, I want (demand?) my Habs to win and nothing short of that will do. I watch the games and scream with frustration as we chase people around our end, are soft in front of our goalies, take stupid penalties (always at the worst time), let in easy goals, miss open passes and open nets.

But then, I come back to reality and tell myself that this is a team in transition, a grand experiment in the works. I (we) have to be patient with this group as it is not finished being molded and shaped to what the final product will look like. Will this team look the same at Christmas time? Will this team look the same come July? I think not. Many changes are still on the horizon. We do have a good nucleus of players but there are many missing parts still.

Many were angered at the loss of what seemed to be our core of vets this year and many applauded their departure. Aside from Koivu who was all heart, I don't miss one of the parting crowd, the change needed to happen to clear the poison out of the dressing room.

Gainey and the rest of the management live and work in a hockey crazed city that are rabid when the team wins, elevating the players to God status. This same crowd demotes the same players to something you would scrape off the bottom of your shoe when they dare to lose or play poorly.

That being said, somethings gotta give. How many times do we have to look at our D and shake our heads or watch our forwardslose the puck in 'their' end or miss open nets? I think our goalies are solid. Price is still a bit immature, IMHO, perhaps dazzled by the heaps of praise that has been thrust on him, before he was ready for it. Our forwards and D are a work in progress....period.

Patience is neede but our season absolutely CANNOT hinge on one player (Markie) being injured. For the love of God, we have to be a deeper, better team than that....aren't we?

Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

I just dont get how these fluky goals always go in on us.  The habs are going to set some kind of record at this pace.

I went to my first game of the season last night and its amazing how you get such a different perspective on players when you watch them live vs on TV.  What I dont like about price at this point is that he doesnt look fired up.  He constantly looks like he's just going through the motions.  He moves so robotically around the crease, and theres no desperation in getting in front of the puck.  You dont see him fighting to see the puck, or pushing defenders out of the way, and im starting to get the impression that most the time he, and our defense as well, arent looking to see where the puck is! I genuinely believe that Carey doesnt want to be in montreal anymore.  Such talent, but its hard to succeed when there is no drive or motivation.

THAT BEING SAID, we can't totally blame last nights loss on Carey Price.  At the end of the day, he did give up 5 goals, and other than the breakaway, didnt really STEAL any goals from the thrashers like pavelec stole goals from us.  HOWEVER, our defense is absolutely atrocious.  I cant believe these guys call themselves NHL defenseman, and as bad as everyone thinks hall gill is, the first two goals dont go in if hall gill is on the ice.  Mara is a career -100 and bergeron a career -60 and they're playing on the same pairing?! Give me a break...
