Game 17: Habs can't solve Tampa's Niittymaki

Tampa's Ryan Malone scores game's first goal, beating prone Carey Price and defenceman Josh Gorges.

Pregame: Price regains a little swagger

Postgame audio: Jacques Martin | Brian Gionta | Mike Cammalleri | Tomas Plekanec | Ryan White | Alex Tanguay

At a Glance: One game at a time, Canadiens coach Jacques Martin said after his team's 2-1 shootout win over Boston on Thursday. True enough. The Habs gave up backbreaking goals late in the first and second period Saturday night to drop a 3-1 decision to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Key Moments: The Habs came out on fire but Tampa Bay opened the scoring when Ryan Malone took advantage of a fistful of Canadiens standing around goalie Carey Price, watching. If Price had no chance on that one, he was largely responsible for Tampa's second goal, yielding a huge rebound that was buried late in the first by former Hab Alex Tanguay. Montreal finally got on the board midway through the second, on the power play, when Brian Gionta swatted a rebound past Lightning goalie Antero Niittymaki. But huge Habs momentum evaporated with a Tampa goal two minutes before the end of the second, James Wright poking home a puck, one that Price should have smothered, from a wild scramble.

What It Means: Price had a superb game against Boston on Thursday. On Saturday, not so much. With the Canadiens thin on an injured blue line, it needs a standout performance every game from its netminder. Even moreso when the Habs run into a superb goalie at the other end of the rink, as they did Saturday vs. Niittymaki.

What's Next: The Habs practice Sunday morning at the Bell Centre for 20,000 or so fans in an annual grocery-chain promotion. They're back in action at home on Tuesday vs. Calgary, wearing throwback 1910-11 red and green uniforms, then hit the road for games Thursday in Phoenix and next Saturday in Nashville.

Might I make a comment, The ducks of 08-09 struggled badly and they had a top defence. I know we miss Markov badly but Id rather we struggle now than after look if the Ducks can do it so can we remain positive Habs faithful

The picture in the article shows something that I think should be addressed.

Malone was able to stand in front of Price and get 2 whacks at it.... 2nd one going in.

In many games this season, the same scenario has played out... Pittsburgh did it to us all night... etc...

No matter who's in goal when you opponent can keep their "bigger" forwards standing around the crease.. your chances of winning are much lower.

Even with Markov and O'Byrne in the line-up, we will still finish in 10th place.   Believe it.

Injuries are a lame excuse to use for our team's demise.  We're supposed to win against weaker teams like Tampa Bay, right?  Wrong!  Teams like Tampa Bay are better than us and will continue to improve.

Everyone has to face the reality that if we do improve, other teams will improve as well and that includes  teams like the Islanders and Toronto.

The truth hurts Habs fans, we are headed for mediocre times for our team.  Everyone hopes for the best for their favourite sports team, but I don't see anything to get excited about for our team and for the future.

The truth hurts, it really hurts.  You don't have to wait until 20 games to analyze this team we have.

Bobby has failed and so has Trevor Timmins.

"We will win the Cup one day only with a mature Carey Price in the nets"

I agree 100%, and i think Tampa has a decent team, they won the cup a few years ago,

St Louis and Lecavalier are sleeping giants, and if stamkos, hedman , ohlund and a few others have a good year

they could finish well, plus i think the players like tocchet.

BKAK72's picture

I bet nobody can name a player ont he HABS roster better than LECAVALIER or identify future (present?) prospects like STAMKOS and HEDMAN.  Tampa is in a much better position and direction than the HABS.

--Carey Price meet Jim Carey --

sholi2000.com's picture

lol, yes because their scouts are much better than ours (sarcasm).  Stamkos, and Hedman?  Products of finishing next to last!

They call me Shane

BKAK72's picture

What exactly is the benefit of not finishing last for HABS fans?  The ability to say "we're average!"

give me a break.

--Carey Price meet Jim Carey --

BKAK72's picture

I believe that a more accurate statement is that this CANADIENS roster is good for a position anywhere b/n 7th to 10th in the EAST.  Basically they are stuck in an AVERAGE position, nothing more than a playoff team at best.  The advantage the HABS have however is playing in the EAST which is quite weak once you take out the PENS and CAPS.

--Carey Price meet Jim Carey --

JM is still tweaking with the lines and should have an idea what lines will be in the coming weeks. Habs problem is that they are not getting any secondary scoring from 2nd,3rd & 4th lines. Goaltending has to be at its best in order for Habs to have a chance to win each night. JM system is to play for the one goal game right now and it should change once the defence gets healthier.

Habs problems right now is on defence and it showed in last nights game. Take the man that is going to the net looking for a rebound. Plain and simple. It does not matter who the Habs have in nets cause the defence clasps on top of the goaltender like the 1st and 3rd goals instead of taking the man. Habs needs to play a tight box when killing a penalty and that would limit great scoring chances for the other team by keeping the play outside the perimeter.

The officating has been sub par and man what do the Habs have to do in getting a penalty called against the other team. Matt Walker gets away with 2 penalties with the stick between AK46 legs and The ROCK knows when Moen gets body slammed to the ice it should have been called holding.

Here is how I would like to see these lines for a change and stick with them for awhile.

1st line- Gionta- Gomez- Cammalleri

2nd line- AK46- Plekanec- SK74

3rd line- Moen- Metropolit- Lapierre

4th line- D'Agostini- Pyatt- Pacerority

Spares- Chipchura- Latendresse

Put Laraque on waivers and send White and Stewart to Hamilton.

It's true... Price knows it or should - how come posters on here don't?

Lats should be in Hamilton. He's been getting a free ride from day one. Enough with this experiment.

Don't want to give up on the Kostitsyns just yet. Bring up SK & let the 2 play together. If Laps & Lats get multiple chances to stay with this team, the brothers deserve the same opportunities.

SK has skills, Lats does not.

I'm not sure the Bulldogs are in Hamiliton right now, so yeah, Lats probably couldn't hurt anything there.

Hartley and Bergeron said some good things on L'Antichambre last night that I agree with. Put your best line against their best line especially in front of your fans; something JM doesnt do. And, signing Leach and playing MAB didnt send a good message to Weber and Subban. The youth need to have some hope that theyll go up to the big club. Now you have a couple in Hamilton thinking 'thats it for this year'.

Bob Gainey just isnt a good GM.

I suppose Hartley and Bergeron were available to say those astute things because they aren't employed by any NHL, AHL, ECHL, or even junior, midget, or house league teams.

When the Habs are done with MAB (oh please please time come) he will be waived down. He knows that. If they need him again he will be waived up. If someone grabs him up, good for them. At a quarter million Leach might work out. He might play in that dreaded and sacred area that no Habs forward whose name begins with "L" dares go. If it doesn't work out, well he knows that. Weber and Subban need to get a lot better before they come up, and stay up. They need ice time to do that. If it doesn't work out the Habs will still try and make it work somehow. They know that.

Remember Reggie Leach? like Lafleur he could crank them in from the edge of the faceoff circle. Most players then couldn't beat an NHL goalie from there. They still can't. Any big defenceman to make up for some forwards lack of work ethic is likely welcome by the Habs.

The Cat's picture

Bergeron wont take a coaching job because of his health. Hartley is still under contract with Atlanta and can only take certain offers from US teams and not canadian teams because of citizenship issues.

It still amazes me when the Canadiens lose a game........THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING.

Relax people, you can't win every single game.

There will be nights when the Canadiens lose.

There will be nights when out first line doesn't win it for us,

and there will be times when the other team wants it more.....

Relax, it's a long season.

Lord, am I the only one over 30? :)

Hey Ian....stop making sense, it may catch on. haha.

I love the Canadiens!

These things you wrote are true. The Habs have won one single game in regulation.

I guess it depends on your expectations ...mine are probably set a little higer than yours , because, the way I see it, they have been losing for 16years.  I personally am interested in actually having a team that will challenge for a cup, not a playoff spot.

sholi2000.com's picture

You have to get over the fact that it's 2010 and there are 30 NHL teams now.

The glory days are over, and they aren't coming back.  You can't walk into a draft and pick three solid players that will be heroes someday in the future.

Now with cap it's even worse.  Example, lets say Halak and Price win every single game this season.  How on earth can the Canadiens pay them fare market value when they are already built near the maximum?  Chicago is a perfect example, next summer they have to sign 4 big names.

Speaking of Chicago.  I would gladly give up three picks for Toews!  :)

They call me Shane

so the fact that its 2010 and there are 30 teams now means that we shouldnt have a goal to win the Cup ? You kidding me ? Glory days ???? Buddy, its been 16 years we have had a lousy team ... 16 years ... thats the problem, too many excuses from the fans and the management. With that attitude, the next 16 years are going to be miserable.  pick 3 players in a draft ... if you look at our first round pcks from 2002 thru 2007 ( who by now should be playing on the big club ... and contributing significantly)  we are a disaster

Shane ... you dont have to explain the cap to me ... but. the difference between the Hawks and us ... they have cap issues because they have SUPERSTARs ... we have cap issues because we overpay for mediocrity.  Gill > 2.5 laraque > 1.5 seriously, we gave 2.75 for Pleks after the miserable season he had ... I will give him credit tho, he has stepped up this season, and I hope management doesnt wait until July 1 to negotiate ... otherwise, he better be traded by the deadline ... oh, and guess what, next season is Markov's last ... do you think he will come back with the crap we have here ? My guess is NO.

The only thing I will agree with you on, is Toews ... he definitely brings it.

The Cat's picture

I know. The melodrama is astounding to say the least, very little reason behind some comments. Conversely, when the team wins and player X has a good game, youll hear player X is back finally living up to his promise etc, or my personal favourite, where are the player X bashers now? Its ridiculous.

We need to call up Sergei "GTFO of ma grill" Kostistyn from the AHL.

Castor's picture

Get rid of MAB

Bring up PK

Bring back Sergei to play 2nd line with his brother.

Alternate Pleks and Gomez on the 1st two lines.

The Triple M line is a good checking line

Have the 4th line be Lats, Laps and Pyatt or White.

Done and Done

WindsorHab-10's picture

I agree that MAB sucks. I panic each time he's on the ice and the puck is going towards him. As for PK, I think we should learn from the Price experiment & just let the stud develop in Hamilton.

For those of you who want to get a view of Mac Bennett, the 3rd-round pick of Montreal, 79th overall this year who's playing in the USHL for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders he's on the US Junior A team, playing Canada West for the World Junior A Challenge Gold Medal on TSN2 at 4:00 PM tommorow. He has 1G, 3A and +2 in 8 USHL games this year, 1 assist in the four Tournament games so far.

Some of us seem pretty desperate about the present, might as well get optimistic about the future I suppose.

I seriously have complete confidence in what this team is doing...it will be exciting

i have to say that this team has one line and 1/3 of a second line tommy pleks needs help on that second line realy bad! i was thinking why don't we trad halak to the blackhawks for patrick sharp and the k-bros to l.a. for frolov, there would be our second line! then i think we can actaully win enough games and stay in a playoff spot until markov gets back.on the coaching of this team i still can't figure out for the life of me why jm hasn't woke up and put mab on the first p.p unit with spacek ,with the cannon he has and with cammy, gionta and gomez that would be awesome to watch,at least until markov gets back then i think you put mab with markov and spacek on the second unit in no way ws it carey prices fault tonight not in the least when you score only 1 goal after out shooting them and out playing them it just get frustrating! the refing was brutual tonight as usual ,they (the refs) have it in for us,i wish jm would go on a profanity laced tirade when they start latting the opposition get away with everything and call us for everything! i think he needs to kick a door off of the refs dressing room and blast them but proper then and only then would you see them call it fair, and he has to remind them during that profanity laced tirade that there 2 teams out there! last but mot least this isn't about the hockey game but if i were the allouettes i'd be scared, very scared because the saskatchewan roughriders are coming to beat you and kick your *** in the grey cup game!

Habs aren't much with out Markov but Pits are the pits without Malkin. They seem to do better when Crosby is out and Malkin is in.

still experimenting, I think so. another 10 games will decide this teams fate...

i am not a Mr Gainey hater, but, DEFINITELY not a lover.  Actually, I believe he has failed miserably at the task at hand.  After 5+ years here in Montreal, where are the impact players to come out of the draft to support our talented , yet STILL small first line ? Where is the BIG Center ? Where is the stability in the coaching ranks ?  Where is the secondary scoring ? Where are the DMen ? After 5 years the only DMan to come out of the system and to be playing here is O'Byrne ? 5 years and the only forward to have made an impact today is Pleks ( whom I dont even believe is a Mr Gainey pick ) and arguably A. Kosts.  I dont think we need to be told its only 15 games, because its 5++ years and 15 games, and this team has changed moderately in that time.  Yea, the names are different, but the reality is the same.

There was an opportunity at the start of this season to really lay the groundwork for a great team within a 3 year period .. we had the cap space .. we have a goalie who , down the road, I believe will help us compete ... we had some talented DMen coming into the system ... what did we do ... we added 3 more small forwards when we have nothing else to surround them with .. can anyone besides the little 3 and pleks do anything ? We added 3 DMen who were best suited as support for a solid defensive core and not the main ingredients

What else can be said when enough folks out there have there heads in the sand and believe this is a good team, when in reality, its a bottom 10 team in the NHL.  I mean, when someone here tells me that this team is better than the Blackhawks for instance, it makes you shake your head. My only hope is when the Molson family comes in, they meet with Mr Gainey, and his resignation follows closely behind.

What' worse is that we are bottom 10 but probably one of the highest payrolls.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture

Don't worry folks, its not 20 games in yet, Martin is still tweaking and we are missing our best defenseman, that said, LAPS/LATS are not 2nd liners...its time to move KOSTY back with PLEKS and give them GIONTA, then move PAX with GOMEZ/CAMM... thats how you spread out the goodness, the bottom six can be setup as you please, they all play that role well.

as well I want to see BELLE/NIELSON/WHITE/CARLE/PYATT/PAX/D'AGS/OBRYNE/WEBB/HALAK and STEWY in there getting good minutes... long live the NAG Youth Movement!...it is our only hope.!!

1.The N.A.G. (North American Grit) Youth Movement will bring us respect...

2.The NHL-Ref-Syndicate will never allow the HABS (or the Leafs) to win another Stanley Cup.

3.Take it easy on the boys, they are going 110%, lower your expectations.

The closests we came was a few year back when KOIVU got his eye taken out by UNJUSTINE and then when KOVY lead us past the bruins and we fell to PHILLY because of Pricey being burned out... thats it folks...

we had SOURAY with 109 mph rockets, RYDER with his game winners and stellar attitude, a solid old core with CUBE/DANDY/STRIET/LANG/TANGY/KOIVU/KOVY, heck even BREEZE... what the heck are we expecting this year? after 12 guys left?...give them time, we are on a 5 year project and we need to see the YOUTH MOVEMENT fill the gaps and develop.

we are on the right track, toughness and grit with a sprinkling of high end talent... don't worry!... it takes time.

Pavelec allowed 5 goals on 11 shots at one point, letting the Islanders cruise to a 6-3 victory over Atlanta.

Clemmenson in Florida, 7 goals on 32 shots, Caps won 7-4, Knuble and Fleischmann each got a pair of goals.

Fleury allowed 3 goals on 14 shots, yanked and Brent Johnson is now in, Sharks lead 4-0 right now.

There were times when there were six teams competing for a Cup, no NHL Draft and Montreal literally owned the Senior League in Quebec.

There were times when there were more than 3 real French Canadian stars in the NHL, (Lecavalier, Fleury, St. Louis) in an NHL that wasn't consisting of 30 teams and isn't horribly racist towards French Canadians anymore.

There were times when the city's fans didn't make me ashamed to be associated with them for turncoat attitudes, anti-European racism and mindless devotion to 4th-rate French Canadian players who wouldn't last 30 games on any other NHL club.

There were times when a GM didn't have to come in and undo the ****-show that had been 1979-2003 in the Management section of the business.

QMJHL does not really teem with NHL talents right now, in fact it's the league where the least number of players are taken in the first round of the NHL draft each year among the QMJHL, OHL and WHL. Louis Leblanc was a great choice for a first-round pick this year but that's a rarity where Quebec has the player Montreal needs. 19 Players were drafted from the QMJHL this year when 211 players were taken and a few of them weren't even from Quebec including the highest drafted player, Dmitry Kulikov, who I'd take in a second looking at his scouting report over any French Canadian drafted this year.

Quebec hockey seems to need a boot in the *** right now for developing better players, is the coaching in the Midget and Junior failing? Does the QMJHL need an upgrade? Are not enough kids getting the opportunity to skate with the prohibitive cost of playing hockey these days, equipment and registration fees considered? Should the Canadiens sponsor more youth hockey to help replenish future ranks? I'd love to and I mean love to see a new Guy Lafleur on the ice, along with a Richard, Cournoyer, Savard and Lapointe all skating for Montreal but right now? I don't see how you could say all 5 of these guys have equivalents in French-Canadian players in the NHL right now.

Montreal needs guys who know the jersey, but they also need guys who earn the jersey every night they play, right now I see ten times the competitive fire in a man from Rochester, NY called Gionta than a local kid called Latendresse.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

matraque's picture

I know what the LHJMQ has problems... But French Canadian talents are all over the place in the CHL, and US Universities.

I don't know why Latendresse is not parking his *** in front of the net.  No one really knows... All we know is that it's what he should be doing.  We all know that when he does that, he scores.

He has as many goals as AK.... He must be doing something right for a 2nd round draft.

THE ROCK's picture

1st goal: CP made a great save but was mugged by his D-Man. Not CP’s fault.

2nd goal: CP should have had the blooper shot. No question about that!

3rd goal: The puck squeezed through & was sitting 5" away from the goal line till Super Man Georges flies in at full force & knocks the puck in his own net. CP would have maybe got it, his glove was almost on top of it.  We will never know now. Another bad bounce for CP, what else is new this year for CP.

Montreal seems to make ordinary goalies look outstanding. 90% of Montreal’s shots on Tampa’s goalie tonight were into his belly. I’ve been watching hockey for over 40 years & I have yet to see any shot pass through a goalies belly into the back of the net. Maybe Montreal is trying to make it a first this year. I rather see Montreal miss the net trying to pick corners than to shoot directly into the goalie all the time.

It doesn’t matter if CP let in 10 goals tonight. The Team can’t score. I finally get Martin’s system: "Score as little goals as possible to get the game to O.T. or a shootout"!

Price is not doing to badly in his career thus far according to Dave Stubbs facts: Price & Patrick Roy both hit the 50th win mark in their 102nd NHL game. Martin Brodeur his 50th win in 93 games. Roberto Luongo got his 50th win in 150 games & Marc-André Fleury got his 50th win in 143 games

"If ya smell what The Rock is cookin"

1st  goal  georges  was  on  his  *** right ontop  of Price instead  of  taking  the  man  infront of the net

Chuck's picture

Scary stat:

In 11 games, Habs have scored only 18 regulation-time goals in front of Price... and 7 of those came in two games (against Toronto and Atlanta). Yikes!

Toronto: 3 goals

Buffalo: 1 goal

Vancouver: 1 goal

Edmonton: 2 goals

Colorado: 2 goals

Ottawa: 1 goal

Pittsburgh: 0 goals

Chicago: 2 goals

Atlanta: 4 goals

Boston: 1 goal

Tampa Bay: 1 goal

That means that in 5 games, Carey would have had to get a shutout for the team to win in regulation. And in three others, his GAA would have had to have been 1.00.

Did your survey, and happy to help out a fellow Habs fan...some of the questions were specific to Montreal though, and since I live in Shanghai, i hope I don't skew the results...

Tomorrow I am going to bring young teenagers to Dogs game in Ottawa. Our seats are ice level close to Dogs's bench. I am going to shout at Sk: Sergei, be patient!!!

SK74 will not understand what you are trying to say to him. He does not understand your language and the only way for SK74 to understand you all is to cheer for him when SK74 has the puck on his stick.

I  don't  think tanking  the season  and  getting a top  5  pick  would  help  the habs. Cause  the  dumb asses who  draft  the  players   would  probably draft  a US  born  player  who is  planning on spending the next  4 years going  to college, instead  of  a player  who could  actually  impact the team right away.  They would  be  better to package a player or 2  and a first  round  pick  for a proven player.  But then  again most proven players  have  no  trade clause  and  probably  would not waive them  too come play in Montreal  thanx  to  some of  the jackass fans who  insist  on  booing  the team  and the  stupid  media   and  there  hunger  for  french  superstars. Damn  even  the french  superstars in the leagyue  don't want to  come here,  Hence  thats why  we are stuck  with Latandress and Maxim Lap!!!!!!!!

It scares me to think who BG might give up in a trade

LOL  there ain't much  too  give  up!!!!!!

Is it true that Leach is another left handed dman? How many left handed shots do we have on D now - 8? Gainey is useless. Molsons needs to wake up and get rid of him.

lavie's picture

You mean Gainey is like Nortel's former GM?

You mean John Roth?

lavie's picture

John Roth was good.  Those GMs after him, destroyed Nortel.

punkster's picture

Whoa. John Roth was what? Ah, no...not the forum for this.
