Audio: Habs enjoy fun day with adoring fans

Canadiens' Maxim Lapierre tosses his stick to a lucky fan at the end of today's Metro Family Practice at the Bell Centre.
John Mahoney, Gazette

• POST-PRACTICE AUDIO: Glen Metropolit  Mike Cammalleri  Brian Gionta

• Metro steals show in practice named for him

Head coach Jacques Martin ran drills, nothing fancy, for just over 40 minutes before his team returned for some fun in the way of a target-shooting and hardest-shot contests, then a 10-minute 4-on-4 game. Some 19,000 fans took in the action.

Lines used in the practice portion of the morning: Gionta-Gomez-Kostitsyn; Lapierre-Plekanec-Cammalleri; Moen-Metro-Pacioretty; White-Pyatt-Latendresse; Chipchura the extra. Defensive pairings: Spacek-Hamrlik; Gorges-Carle; Leach-Bergeron. Gregory Stewart was home feeling under the weather, while Paul Mara took a therapy day.

As for the skills competition, let's just say that an investigation ought to be held if Glen Metropolit isn't used in the Canadiens' next shootout. And as a shooter, Jaro Halak makes a good goalie.

From the skills contest:

Glen Metropolit won the target shooting, obliterating four targets on as many shots, all on slap shots, the final one a one-timer. Mike Cammalleri also took our four on four, but figures that Metro won based on style points. Metro agreed and said he also won based on his better looks. Max Pacioretty hit one target with eight pucks while crowd-pleaser Scott Gomez took our four with six, as did Tomas Plekanec. Brian Gionta hit four on five.

Hardest shot: Marc-André Bergeron, with a best-of-two blast of 104 mph. He was 4 mph faster than Andrei Kostitsyn.
For those who say that goalie Carey Price lacks consistency, he hit two at 85 mph in full goaltending gear, but with a regular composite stick and a forward's gloves. Halak: 63 and 73, falling down on both attempts.

The Whites defeated the Reds in the 4-on-4, with Cammallieri, Guillaume Latendresse and Maxim Lapierre scoring on Price. Kostitsyn and Jaroslav Spacek solved Halak as time ran out.

The Habs will take Monday off (Sunday is their usual day off) before returning to the ice Tuesday morning to prepare for that night's Bell Centre game against the Calgary Flames.

FIRST THING To realize is that the montreal canadians of today have no relationship to

the montreal canadians of yesteryear. almost everything is different. you all know wat the differences r,

but the fans expectations r way way too  high. the NHL is much much different than it was.

The montreal canadiens of today are not and cannot be the special and fantastic team they were in the past.

Bob Gainey as good a player as he was and as bad a GM as he is, has many constraints.  It is a big big

disadvantage taxwise to be situated in Quebec.

SmartDog's picture

You'd think that Martin's tried on enough shoes that he can find a pair that fits.  If he keeps swapping players in and out the guys are going to get Carbo flashbacks.   Price is already half ruined (recovery possible but uncertain).  Martin needs to decide which guys to back, where to put them, and get some consistancy going fairly soon.

Or else... my mind... may vell SNAP!!!  Unt my life vill be lived....for the thriilllllsss!!!!

Sorry - broke into song there!

Dave Stubbs... you are a great writer.

I used to get angry when the habs lost, but not anymore. Now I just expect it,  looking at the kind of players we have.

I don't expect this team to make the playoffs, and would be shocked if they did.

It seems we've been "patching" for years, but the holes just keep getting bigger and the deficiencies are ever so blatant. Feels like the titanic going down with no chance for survivors.

Hats off to Yeats for some awesome clevery comments and to17 cups (why 17?) for his review of the Dogs game. Great to see they turned Sergei around, and this years smothering Dogs defense is 2011-2012 smothering Habs defense (once Gill is gone and Mab is a distant memory). I love this line:

With Cam Ward out for 3-4 weeks, it's pathetic how most of Leafs fan think that this is their chance to get rid of Toskala and get Canes' first round draft pick. LOL!

Oh boy..more like 3rd or 4th round draft pick. It's funny how Leafs think that their players are worth that much..I remember during the Draft, how Leafs fans passed around their comments on TSN for trading Kaberle for Kessel and a pick.

Some idiotic rumours on other unreliable sources..."Canes might be interested in Halak/Price".

I think Canes will either go for Gerber, or trade for Biron. Or just stick to Leighton..

Some interesting rumours like Sanford, the stellar prospect of the Canucks organization to be traded. He obviously won't get a job in Van City as Luongo has signed a 12 year deal.

It's possible, as Canes need to go into a rebuilding mode as they're also one of the oldest teams in the NHL.

Gerber already played out his time in Carolina.  The stellar prospect, Sanford, that you speak of is in our system playing (quite well) for the Bulldogs

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

Whoops sorry I meant Schneider ...Cory Schneider

Bugs's picture
Gerber??? Isn't he in Ruskova?

As for Biron, I heard (just recently but I forget who and where) that he has a deal with L.I. management that they will trade Biron to a "contender" the second DiPietro re-enters the picture. I don't know if the Caners fit that profile for the moment...but...we all know the Caners. It'd be foolish to write'em off.

doug's picture
It's telling that Stubbs is writing an article about what a dummy Walsh was with the Twitter nonsense (stubbs said on Twitter it's coming soon) but that no one actually does an expose on Gainey and what a disaster he is turning into. Guess there are no repercussions to attacking a dumb lawyer/agent, but journalism takes a back seat when it comes to writing about the Habs top brass, their coached, or anything else. Got to be careful with your sources, after all. Need that locker room access. But what about the total frigging mess this team may be becoming? What about The Contract we took on? Not newsworthy?

I wonder if people would be as concerned if SK's agent tweeted about how he can't understand why Lats is in Montreal and his client is stuck toiling in Hamilton? As far as Gainey is concerned, doing an expose on what a disaster this team has become would not exactly be newsworthy. I mean hell we're into our 17th year.

punkster's picture

You know, a year ago I would have thought you two to be far too negative about all this. 6 months ago I would have mildly argued for a more positive outlook. These day I rather feel a dawning of understanding. Suckage...a word you bandied about last year...enters my mind more and more these days. Am I being sucked into the vortex of suckage? Or do I simply submit to the inevitability of suckalicious? 17 freaking years.

doug's picture
I was frustrated but not negative. Check the transcripts. Everything changed when Gainey let everyone and everything he had appeared to build go overnight. On the eve of free agency, he made it painfully clear he had zero plan. That day I jumped ship. I can't believe in a man who admitted he didn't believe on his own ideas.

Last season's motto was "History is Played Here." This year's campaign has two: "Embrace the Suck!" and "Tank for Glory!"

Habs fans should have been at least eligible for parole seven years ago!

punkster's picture

Not to mention the statute of limitations under which we should have filed a grievance and begun legal proceedings ages ago.

I was all for blowing up the team after last season. Those guys were never going to get the job done. Their best shot was 2007-08 and we all know how that ended. It was better to get a crew cut and just start from scratch. However, this year's performance to date -- I don't think the next few games until #20 is gonna show us anything different -- makes me truly believe that the only hope is to tank. It worked for the Caps, Pens and Hawks. The argument against it, that the fans won't stand for it, is just flat out laughable. Won't stand for it? What the hell have they been doing for the past 16 years? Sitting for it?

punkster's picture

I have trouble with the tanking part but I fully understand the sentiment, both for and against. I personally don't care what other fans think of the idea but for me it's defeatist. I know, I know...better picks and all. I'm kind of old fashioned in that regard I guess. Never say die and all that, even if the Cup continues to be nothing but a dream. Bah...too depressing to consider. Pour a single malt and enjoy a night with the family. That's what I'm doing.

doug's picture

I agree. There's no asterisk for those horrific teams' championships. It's the only way to compete in a cap environment in which you lose talent as it blooms. Course Captain Gainey wouldn't sign Crosby until he low-balled him June 30th the day before his impending UFA and then shook his hand and wished him well. He's completely out of date and out to lunch. Screw being loyal to him.

Price, from draft day to keeping up to forcing him to be played to everything he isn't today an might have been. That's all on Gainey. I can't stand Price's game, but it's not his fault.

punkster's picture

Oh crap...all that and my beloved Giants blew another one. Hell of a weekend.

The only argument that I can come up with against tanking is that God only knows what group of uderperfoming knuckleheads Timmons and Gainey would chose with their early-round picks. I mean we need a big centerman, they chose Price. I don't even want to think about AK. And, everyone is sporting wood over a ninth-rounder Halak. Absolutely pathetic! Not the Yankees? Hell, these guys aren't the Devils!

punkster's picture

Bottom line seems to be Gainey, and Timmons to a lesser extent I suppose. Whether we tank or not these two will decide who gets chosen in a draft or a trade. It follows that they are the problem. Chances of improvement will increase with a changing of the guard? Depends on who takes over from them but at this point almost any other choice may be better.

HURRICANES' WARD OUT AT LEAST 3-TO-4 WEEKS WITH CUT LEG

17Cups's picture

My son and I just saw the Bulldogs defeat Binghampton 1 - 0 in Ottawa.  Without doubt the best player on the ice was Sergi Kostitsyn.  During the warmup he showed intensity and was one of the last players off the ice - praticed one-timers with PK till the Zamboni came on the ice.  SK's backchecking was terrific, he was always in position, made excellent passes, had several shots on net, scored the winner in the third period and was on the ice for the final seconds when the Sens had pulled their goalie for the extra man.  He has his coach's confidence.  He was picked as third star after the two goalies, got a tremendous ovation and gave his stick to a kid waiting to congratulate him.

So do we need a player like this? At least three players now in Montreal would not have shown what he did tonight.

Other observations.  The Bulldogs have a great defense - PK and Belle are great unit and with Weber and Henry look exceptionally strong.  They shut down a Binhamton 5 on 3 for almost two minutes.

Desjardins was great in net.

The team's does a lot of ice communication and there is lots of chatter on the bench.

Guy Boucher runs the bench well - excellent line changes, has the players full attention when there is a stopage in play.  Seems to have the same system going as Martin only it's working.

Mikael Johansson was not dressed and my son asked the trainer where he was saying he ws a favorite player.  He was told MK was injured and a few minutes later the trainer came back with a signed puck from #85.  Nice touch.

Good to see the lads on the farm.

Buaidh no bàs

Skill-wise, I don't think anybody questions that SK belongs in the NHL - he does.  Attitude-wise, however, I think he's still in kindergarten.  He's doing the typical kid/teenager thing when they get scolded..."I'll try for a bit, Mom/Dad will be happy, and I'll get my PS3 back".  Sorry, SK, it doesn't work that way - everything you do has consequences.  There are too many players in Hamilton that would give their eye-teeth for a chance with the Habs (most of whom will never make it)...we need to see more than the token change.  SK needs to grind it out with the Bulldogs until the New Year, at which time his effort and attitude should be reviewed; if the change is consistent, then by all means bring him up.

It's great to hear that Sergei is working hard in the minors. He was one of my and many others favorite players when he first stepped into a habs jersey a couple seasons ago. He truly has a lot of potential to be a big solid hockey player with tremendous vision of the ice. Will he ever reach that potential? Only time will tell I guess. But unlike a number of poeple on this board I am not yet convinced that Sergei has learned his lesson and has finally become a team player. I wouldn't recommend calling Sergei up for a while even if he is playing well. He needs to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he's willing to put in the work even if he gets frustrated and believs he should be called up. But if he can prove that and I certainly hope he can then by all means call him up and lets see if he can regain that rookie form which so greatly ingratiated him with the Montreal fans.

I too found myself at the game.

SK played with a lot more intensity by the 3rd and certainly showed that he can play a level above the rest at times. (To me he looked injured and floated a bit in the 1st.)

PK can skate, no question about that. But seeing him beside Belle, you realize he could fill out a bit more.

Conboy and Henry sure like to crash and bang around the boards. Conboy's board play reminded me of Laraque's puck handling.

Guy Boucher certainly did have the bench's attention. I noticed that the Bulldogs were always in a huddle during breaks, while the baby Senators were chatting amongst themselves.

Mr.Hazard's picture

So when and under what circumstances is mgmt finally going to recall him?

Glad everyone seems to be catching on to my "play Halak at home" mantra.  Now if only JM can get with the program.

All kidding aside... Price WAS a good goalie... now he seems to be LESS than he was.  Too bad.... but let's see him as he is NOW and not as we wish he was.  And give him time to regain his form.

Canada Protects Home Advantage at Olympics

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/21/sports/21olympics.html?_r=1&pagewanted...

Canadian officials said they were following rules of access to competition sites, as set by each sport’s governing body. But they also intend to protect the Olympic host’s home-field — or home-ice, home-snow or home-track — advantage.

I heard about this on the Colbert Report, and now Stephen Colbert put Canada on notice lol.

I didn't expect Canada to act in such an unsportsmanlike manner, I agree with U.S. speedskater Dane Parra, as he said: "It just doesn’t seem like it’s in the Olympic spirit."

Same here. I don't how well defined 'canadian identity' is but this does not seem Canadian to me. I was sort of pissed when I heard about this, also via The Colbert Report. I hope that this moderate public outcry will convince Canada to change their minds. If we're going to win I want it to be a fair fight.

lavie's picture

Just came back from Dogs' game.

Desjardins enjoyed a shotout (1:0), and he played super good;

SK74 played his NHL level hockey (scored).

I was also impressed by Belle, Benoit, Darche and Webber.

SmartDog's picture

Price can't even win an inter-game competition.... yeah, that's a cheap shot - just joking.

I kind of like those lines...a lot depends on whether AK shows up to play.  He seems to be getting some confidence so I'm hopeful.

Would anyone like to see Metro play with Pleks?  Not sure if Metro has played much wing or if you would put Plek on the wing but if it can be worked out it might be interesting.  I hate when people posts their lineups, but just to give a rough estimate...

Gionta     Gomez     Cammalleri

Pleks     Metro     A.Kost/S. Kost

Moen     Lap     (anyone but Latts)

(one of kids) Chip   (one of kids)

matmacat's picture

Ok then, I'll answer your question. Yes I'd like to see it. But can metro play all those minutes for a whole season? I think maybe not, so this could only be a short term solution.

idle's picture

I don't really know too much about him from his past.  Is it that he is just having a good year so far or is that he has never really had the kind of chances he is having in Montreal.  I think I heard that he has played for 15 different teams in 15 different years in 7 different leagues or something outrageous like that.  Maybe he is just taking all that experience and settling into a comfortable situation here.

matmacat's picture

He's only recently played a full NHL season. And if you consider he's in his mid 30s now, that's kind of late. I think he's a terrific player, just don't know if Bob will sign him next year when he'll be 36. I would definitely sign him for 1 year, and you can tell he's enjoying it here. Gets plenty of ice time, and it's well deserved too. And he's got hands! Probably the most underrated player on the team. And Plek is another fantastic player, so I wouldn't mind seeing them together with AK. The only problem is that Moen is doing really well with Metro and Pac, so I'd hate to split up that line.

matmacat's picture

I don't know why you're bringing up s.kost all of a sudden. Not like he's been playing with us this year. And where is Pacioretty? He's been playing much better lately.

idle's picture

"I hate when people post their lineups, but just to give a rough estimate..."

I included Sergei simply as a possibility.  You can put Pacioretty in any one of my open ended spots (such as "anyone but Lats".. Pacioretty would be included as an anyone or "one of the kids" Pacioretty would be included as one of them along with Dags, White, Pyatt or anyone else you want in there.

Instead of worrying about the finer points of the "rough estimate" why don't you answer the question, which was do you think it would be a good idea to try Metro and Pleks together?

HalakisBetterThanPrice's picture

Plus he's so cute.

idle's picture

did it make you feel good to write that?

_koopy_'s picture

Our third line has looked amazing the past few games imo; I wouldn't split them up. I say we bring up Sergei for now so that we don't have to shuffle the first or third line:

Gionta     Gomez     Cammalleri

S.Kost      Pleks       A.Kost

Moen       Metro       Pacioretty

Gui!        Lapierre    Pyatt/White/Chip

CHasman's picture

Make the last line Pyatt White and Lapierre and I'm in.  The third line is definitely playing too good to split up.  Stick with what is working.  Has Sergei earned a spot though?

idle's picture

I'm fine with keeping the third line and yes they have been playing well, but Gomez, Gionta and Cammalleri have played very well together and they are always being moved around.  As for Sergei... he has earned a spot through the lesser of two evils theory.  At this point I would even be willing to play him over his brother.  The truth is there is no benefit to having him play in the A.  Either move him for whatever (if anything) you can get for him or let him go to the K if he wants or outright release him.  Otherwise, bring him back up and accept the fact that not every player is going to be the most brightest and well grounded bulb in your string of lights.  Do you think that Sergei is the only prick in the league?  There are lots of idiots and partially delusional players who get ice time because they are better options then the more stable less productive players.

S.kost may not get a ton of points but he is better defensively then he gets credit for, he hits and plays with a pout, and he can skate and more the puck well.  He is a good forchecker and can help create offence on a team that has very little outside of it's top line and second line center.

i agree. our top and 3rd line are our best this season. they're not the problem. keep them as they are.

and you can keep AK on the 2nd.
