Canadiens forward Michael Cammalleri is paying tribute to Quebec-based soliders who have recently returned from Afghanistan by providing tickets to 21 homes games for the troops and their families.

Called Cammy's Heroes, the program will allow 21 members of the Canadian Forces and their families take in a Canadiens game at the Bell Centre. The contribution is being made through the Military Families Fund.

“I wanted to get involved with our troops and come up with something for the soldiers, because I have a great
deal of admiration for their courage and commitment,” Cammalleri said in a statement.

On each of those 21 game nights, Cammalleri’s guests will have the opportunity to meet him before the game, have their photo taken with him and receive a souvenir gift.

“On behalf of the 2,000 soldiers from Quebec in the Forces who have courageously served our country
overseas and who have returned from Afghanistan just a few days ago, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Michael Cammalleri for his gesture towards our valiant troops by inviting them to be part of the game,” Brigadier General Guy Laroche, Commander of Land Forces Quebec Area, said in the statement.

We'll have audio of Cammalleri following today's pre-game skate.

There's your captain right there.

It's taken awhile for this process to play out but Cammalleri is the team's best player, the one most likely to be here until the end of his contract (the drumbeats for Gomez and his hefty ticket to go will begin in earnest in short order) and the one who seems like he would embrace the notion of being named captain.

Classy move by a Classy guy on a classy team - can you say embracing leadership responsibilities ?

I was relieved of my duties in Afghanistan by my brothers in arms from Quebec about seven months ago and this gesture is really amazing. I hope the soldiers enjoy those games and enjoy being home. I missed most of last season and now I am so happy to sit in my living room and watch the Habs play win or lose it doesn't matter to me. The Afghanistan tours that I have done have really made me enjoy life and our freedom here in this Great Great Country of ours. Please remember the sacrifices that our soldiers past, present and future have made on behalf of our Nation. Also remember the wounded soldiers that many here in Canada never hear about. We are doing very good hard work overseas but unfortunately it comes with a heavy price. Have fun watching the game folks Go Habs Go......Pro Patria.

Class, class, class...

And this might finally give Don Cherry something good to say about the Habs!

Always good to hear about such gestures.  wonder how they'll decide who the lucky soldiers will be.

Classy move by Cammalleri.  And props to Carey Price, whose helmet always features a yellow ribbon in support of Canada's troops.

By the way, if any of you follow the OHL, the Kitchener Rangers and Mississauga St. Michael's Majors will be playing the 2nd annual Remembrance Day game in Mississauga tomorrow morning (special School Day game).  Both teams will feature special jerseys that will be auctioned off to raise money for veterans.  Here is the nice looking St. Michael's Majors commemorative jersey, while the Kitchener Rangers jersey can be found here (apologies...could not find a better picture of the jersey...they really look awesome!).

The Rangers have been doing the jersey auctions now for the last 4 years, and have raised over $100 000 for veterans' groups.  It's nice to see other teams getting in on the process.

habfan53's picture

Carey has a new special helmet that that has poppies onlong the bottom just below "Lest we forget" on one side and " On souviendra" on the other, there is a veteran laying a wreath on one side and a piper on the other. It was featured on HNIC last week after he wears it he is going to donate it for auction with proceeds going tothe same fundas Mike's

I am going to buy a No. 13 Jersey.

What a fantastic gesture by Cammalleri to those brave soldiers who serve us so well! I am sure that they will appreciate it greatly. Way to go Camalleri.

habaddict_andy's picture

Classy indead.  Cammy is my new favorite player along side Markov.  But suddenly his a captain material after this move?  Don't think so.  I still say Gionta for captain.  Leave the scoring and skills to Cammy, and leave the responsibility of captainsy to Gionta, or possibly to Gomez...

NightRyder's picture

Gomez won't be here long enough to be a captain.

No hate for BOB here, he was one of our best Captains ever.

Pierre McGuire for GM. Time to join the new NHL. You are in our hearts forever Bob.

Bill J's picture

When you suggest that Pierre McDumDum is a better candidate then BG as our GM - you kinda make yourself a liar by saying "No hate for BOB here"

IE your saying BG is worse then McDumDum... and on THAT point you are wrong in many MANY MANY MANY peoples eyes (including MaxLap)

I love Cammy :)  What a great thing to do, it speaks volumes about his character and what a classy guy he is!

So happy he is a member of the Habs :)

This is a very tasteful and classy move by a very tasteful and classy player. Kudos to Cammy for taking a moment for the men and women of the Queben Armed Forces. We don't see enough of this type of behaviour anymore.

Very thoughtful and principled gesture by Cammy ahead of Remembrance Day. Man, does this ever speak to his character.

Let's all remember to take the time tomorrow to honour our soldiers past and present, if only by setting everything aside for a couple of minutes at 11am.

What are the chances of Cammy making Team Canada for the Olympics? or really what kind of tear would he need to go on from now unitl the 23 man roster is named on Dec 31st to be named? he is 8 points behind canada"s top left wing Rick Nash and then you have Danny Heatley and Ryan Smyth above him with 5 and 6 points repectively. i know that for team slike this most of the time you swtich left and right wings to get the best roster but i was just wondering what you guys thought? what if he starts tearing it up from now until then????

I'm glad one of these new guys gets involved in something else than hockey from their own will and interest...not through the Organization

by the way there will be a skating event at the Bell Centre this month, where funds will go to Enfant-Retour Quebec, an Org that helps families in the search of their missing child....METRO will be the one Hab (or one of them) skating with the general public...

100% class!!!

As a member of the Forces, I find this to be a very classy move on the part of Cammalleri.

This also reinforces my belief that the Cammalleri, Gomez & Gionta line should be nicknamed the CGG line in honour of the Canadian Grenadier Guards infantry reserve regiment here in Montreal.

The CGG line was first proposed by the l'Anichambre crew on RDS' post-game show, they created a poll to come up with a nickname for the line, and the CGG line was one of the selections. The l’Antichambre crew impressed me with their knowledge of the regiment, you can see the video captured on Facebook video here: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=164478989218

As a member of the CGG I can tell you that this regiment is top-notch, with the regiment having served in WWI & WWII with 21 battle honours emblazed upon the Colours. Many members have also been serving in Afghanistan.

Given now that Cammalleri has decided to honour Canadian Forces members, this now reinforces my belief that the line should be called the CGG line. I think it’s a perfect fit.

Great sentiment. The only problem I see is that line doesn't really stay together and it may never be a full time line.

I said this before I don't want a captain on this team there are too many guys that can wear it. lets them all come to the rink knowing they are all leaders and show the guys that are not doing the job it's time to set up.

Corporate's picture

Although this is funny... 2 weeks ago it was Gionta for Captain. Now it is Cammy... I am sure if we wait a few weeks it will be Gomez.. I personally think any of those guys would be good. I also think this would be the best time to name a captain because the team is not doing too well and Martin needs a guy in the room that can take the lead.

StevieRay's picture

Gomez .. 2 goals .. 7 mil + ..  I sure hope not .

B's picture
Gomez: 17 games 2 goals 9 assists
Grabovski: 15 games 3 goals 9 assists

I hope Gomez can do better than that.

StevieRay's picture

Me three ! Ouch ...

Grabowski doesn't have near the talent playing with him as Gomez does !

Habscore's picture

Gomez is great to watch on the ice....although he does not score as much, he is fast and he does create chances/opportunities to score goals..he does smart plays...the opponent team needs to run after his butt for that....the scoring will come eventually

----- Go Habs f*kin Go - AMEN!!! -----

Habsrule1's picture

I don't care about his salary. He's playing very well and is more of a set-up guy than a goal scorer.

Corporate's picture

Finally some good news regarding the Montreal Canadiens.. Who would have thought it.

Thank you Cammy for supporting the real heros of Canada. These brave men and women put their lifes on the line while wearing our flag and I salute each and everyone of them. I am so proud to be a Canadian and live in a country with true freedom of speech and where no one dies because they can't afford to go to a doctor. I thank our soldiers for giving that to us eveyday. Cammy your heart and your head is in the right place go Habs go.

StevieRay's picture

I saw on HNIC the other week that Carey Price was putting up for auction one of his game worn Goalie masks..proceeds I belive are going to the injured soldiers ...That is also a classy act ..

Atta boy Carey !

here is that story you can see Carey's mask at the end it looks great really nice tribute to the soldiers and vets alike.

Corporate's picture

I do agree that is awesome... But I think for a little while Carey should think about the product on the ice and not changing pads and masks every 10 games..

Chorske's picture

Attaboy, Cammy.

Classy move.

thats is awesome!!!!! he gets my vote for the C

now maybe the habs will get a little coverage on coaches corner if Cherry does not cover this the he is really full of it.

As someone who's significant other is deployed in Afghanistan as we speak.... this really touches me to see someone recognize their strength and courage especially when I know how much the men and women oversea's admire the strength and courage of many NHL players.

I send stats and magazines every few days for the guys to keep up with. Hockey means a lot to these guys.

Such a class act from the moment Cammalleri has arrived here in Montreal.

Really classy move.

Thanks for posting this!

Good enough for me on the "C" (although he doesn't speak french).

Habsrule1's picture

That is an awesome gesture by Cammalleri. I love it.

How about a vote for for Captain on this thread?

For some reason, I still vote for Gionta, though there are other choices that would not dissapoint me:

Cammalleri, Gomez, Hamrlik, Markov, Metropolit

We can tally the votes tomorrow at 10am.

Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

24 Cups's picture

Metro - hey, I understand the love of the past few weeks, but this guy is 35 and is strictly a secondary level player.  He could be gone in a year or two.  Choosing him as captain would be an indirect way of saying our team is hopeless.

Hamrlik - there is a strong chance that he is traded by the end of next year.  Just like Metro, he's a solid guy who contributes a ton but we need to select someone who is going to lead us for the next five years.

Gomez - simply put, there are three more worthy candidates in front of him so he doesn't merit consideration.  He can drift away on a cloud at times and doesn't always bring his A game.   Good, but not good enough.  Worthy captains don't get moved three times in five years.

Markov - the obvious choice but doesn't appear to want it due to communication issues.  I can respect that fact.

Gionta & Cammalleri  - No questioning their spirit, leadership, or effort.  They both seem dedicated to the new team that is being built. Gionta has reached his peak as an NHLer while Cammy still is on the rise.   Cammy has more of an offensive flair but I guess the two big issues would be the respect they garner in the room and their ability to connect and influence the younger players who are still developing.  (issues that none of us on this site are privy to in any real way).  Cammy also seems to be more personable and is three years younger.  He is very well spoken and seems to understand what the role entails, especially in a place like Montreal.  It would appear that he could handle the pressure.  (that may also be true for Gionta).  If he can pass the two questions I have posed, then he gets my vote.

Habsrule1's picture

I respect your opinion, but just because a guy is a "secondary level" player should not negate him as Captain....I do agree our Captain should be younger with potential for a longer future with the club though.

I'm not predicting trades, etc here. I'm simply throwing out some names that may make good Captains.

Gomez would make a good Captain. I see him as working hard every game and doing a pretty good job out there. He has also said all the right things when he has spoken to the press. There are many Captains that have played for multiple teams in their career...that's not a breaker for me.

All that being said, my vote would come down to Gionta or Cammalleri and I just see Gionta as more of the "give 110% every single shift" than Cammalleri. They are both very well spoken. To me that's a wash.

Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

Corporate's picture

Very well written... Good post as always.

Castor's picture

Cammy is my favourite, but I'd still vote for GIO for Captain. He has the skills and passion needed no doubt.

Bryan's picture

I think Cammi and Gionta would be the most deserving.  I love Metro, but he's too old to be a future face of this team... Cammi and Gionta are here for the long run.

Agree that Hamrlik should get at least an A though until Markov comes back... he's been outstanding.
