POST-GAME AUDIO: Jacques Martin | Tomas Plekanec | Glen Metropolit | Mike Cammalleri | Carey Price

• At a Glance: Note to Bob Gainey: re-sign Tomas Plekanec now, if not yesterday. The Canadiens snapped out of their offensive lethargy in Phoenix tonight, after a slow start, beating the Coyotes 4-2 on a three-assist night for Plekanec.

But at what cost? Workhorse Montreal defenceman Jaroslav Spacek left the game in the third period with an undefined injury. He's the fourth Canadiens rearguard to go down in the first quarter of this season, after Andrei Markov, Ryan O'Bryne and Hal Gill.

Another sort-of snakebit night for Montreal goalie Carey Price, the first goal eluding him after he'd been speared in the throat, the second a skate deflection at the edge of his crease.

• Key Moments: The Canadiens had scored all of two regulation-time goals in their past three games, and they hardly poured it on early against the Coyotes. Three shots in the first period? Not going to get 'er done, boys. But Mike Cammalleri took his team's goal-scoring lead with his eighth of the season, on the power-play, midway through the second on a marvelous pass from Tomas Plekanec, who had been nicely fed from behind the net by Brian Gionta.

Former Canadien Robert Lang tied the game a few minutes later with his fourth of the season, cashing a scramble after Price had been accidentally harpooned in the throat by the stick of Habs defenceman Paul Mara.

Marc-André Bergeron, with his third, put the Canadiens back on top with a nice snap over Bryzgalov's shoulder early in the final period with the teams playing 4-on-4, then Plekanec set up Glen Metropolit for his fourth on an absolutely gorgeous pass. It was Plekanec's third assist of the night, his 200th point coming on his assist of Bergeron.

The 'Yotes drew to within one on Paul Bissonnette's first NHL goal, a point shot which pinged off his skate (read: was kicked) past Price. Gionta iced the game with an empty-netter in the final minute, his eighth to pull him even with Cammalleri.

• What It Means: The Canadiens finally won a game against a Western Conference team, their first in six tries.

• What's Next: The Habs head into Music City for a Saturday night game against the Nashville Predators. Then it's back home to play Tom Kostopoulos's Carolina Hurricanes next Tuesday at the Bell Centre.

For Captain I am going to vote Gionta, Gomez to me has been a little disappointment for me. I was hoping for more goals from him. But I love that line, what's not to like about that line right? My first time posting here just signed up. Been a Habs fan since 1970. Grew up in Boston got to rub a lot of Bruins fans the wrong way. LOL

Habs are stagnating.  They have left Egypt and are wandering aimlessly in the desert.  They must obey the commandments of God in order to finally make it to the promised land and fulfill the dream of Eastern Conference Finals.  First step to repentance: reintegrate Sergei "GTFO of ma grill" Kostistyn back into the fam.  I've said it before and I'll say it again: Mafia Bros. Andrei the Lion and Sergei GTFO are integral to the dream of Habs resurrection.

Priceberg needs to spend more time meditating under the lotus tree.  Halak needs to work on his swordsmanship.

Is it at all possible that Gainey is fishing for Brunnstrom?

We were, after all, one of the three teams it came down to for his decision...

jmsheehy19's picture

I hope not, aside from his first game, I haven't seen anything impressive from this kid. If we're getting someone from dallas I'd rather give up a little more and get Neal or Benn

crabvader's picture

Those two are untouchable on that team. I guarantee it.

Worst case scenario...he realized that he needs to mature and just play hockey if he wants to become a tradeable asset as per his request.

Best case scenario...he realized that he needs to mature and just play hockey if he wants to become an asset for the Canadiens as per everyone else's request.

good news about the lack of penalty minutes. I think he's gonna be back on the team by the end of the month if he keeps this up.

EDIT: let me rephrase, I think he'll be up with montreal by the end of the month, or both he and his brother will be on another team.

BeachHabFan's picture

marketing, baby. "what a catch, you'll love this guy, check out this report. And his brother is pretty good too. And all i want back is Giguere"

SeriousFan09's picture

Troubled French-Canadian goaltender whose best days might be behind him with a massive cap hit to play in Montreal, yeah, I can't see that situation not working out for Montreal.

If Sergei gets moved, it's for a forward, same with Andrei.

I would like to inform you that the french media are now "officially" Latendresse case.

That should please a lot of people here.  I have a feeling he'll get traded.  Too bad... he cannot seems to get his game going with the Habs.  He will probably end up scoring 25+ on another team.

crabvader's picture

You can add that Komisarek is also out for 3 weeks.

forskis's picture

It is not a question of French media this or that...I think what people are annoyed with is that no one on the team should be getting a free pass from anybody...Latendresse has shown glimpses and has not been able to get over the hump and doing especially bad this year but no one has brought it up.  That's all...and he will not be traded, he has the size and we have seen the skill occasionally, he will be given the same patience and opportunity as AK46 has so far.

BUT if you want to make it a linguistic media thing...then why in the world would Michel Bergeron say that JM is stifling Lats' creativity on L'antichambre?  He, as a former coach, should know that Lats' job is to shoot the puck by forcing his way to the net or standing in front of it...he is no puck dangler...Bergeron should stop making excuses for him.

"Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

matraque's picture

I think what Bergeron was refering to the fact that JM is playing his better players during the PK... taxing them. What he is saying in the article you might be refering to  is that any player in Montreal have to play a system... Preventing the offensive player to be creative. Yes, Lats always been a Bergeron's favorite, but it seems over.  I doubt he said that Lats should dangle the puck.  He keeps saying that he should go park his big butt in the goalie's face and collect the garbage.

forskis's picture

Latendresse will be fine....he is in a funk, it may last the whole season, it may not...but the key will be to be patient and let this funk run its course.

Also, I thought he was working on his skating...there was a play in the Calgary game where he was in the offensive zone and there was a Calgary breakout and Calgary was in the Habs' zone for about 5 seconds on 5-on-4 before Latendresse managed to catch up to the play and help out.  Did he do anymore skating work in this off-season?

"Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

crabvader's picture

Lats has an even simpler job than shooting, and that's hitting. He turns away from hits! He never finishes his checks on a regular basis.

I think Timmins learned from his mistakes and got two good youngsters from the Q. Gabriel Dumont will be our Maxime Talbot and Lefebvre is following closely.

And that would be me. I am not afraid, who is going to pick on a girl?

Yep, I just played the girl card. Sue me.

forskis's picture

Gomez is trying, the effort is there, I think he is trying too hard...he seems a bit snakebit, he has stolen the puck a few times and hasn't been able to get it past the goalie.  I think he will be fine.

At least the worries about Gionta and Cammaleri and their future point and goal totals seems to have abated.

"Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

HardHabits's picture

You chicken!!! I was wondering why you omitted him. ;-)

BeachHabFan's picture

have they played on a line together this year? it would be like having a special ed class (no offense to my fellow special ed alumni out there). and of course, just to piss everyone off, they'd be a huge success...

HardHabits's picture

That is a great idea. The underachiever line!!!

Watsatheo's picture

I don't undertand why Bob wants Pacioretty in the roster. He clearly not ready for the NHL speed. He barely dominated in the AHL. He's only 20...I don't understand the rush to play him on the 4th line. This is the same thing that happened to Latendresse. I just don't understand the rush.

SeriousFan09's picture

I suspect by the end of November, Sergei will get called up considering Guy Boucher performed an exorcism of sorts on him and Montreal can send Pacioretty back down for development purposes. D'Agostini's return in another week or two (I estimate anyway) should fill out enough forward spots that he can be added to the lineup. Gomez/Gio/Cam, SK/AK/Pleky, Laps/Metro/Moen and Pyatt/D'Agostini/White would make a good lineup.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

Olay Olay Olay's picture

Sergai has obviously been promised a trade in the near future or else he wouldn't be playing at all, I doubt he'll be back.

SeriousFan09's picture

I have a feeling if he is called up and performs to reasonable expectations, he wouldn't mind hanging around. NHL is the ultimate goal for these kids so if he's asked to show up and he plays well with the team and he starts going with brother Andrei, a sharp Top-6 would be present and there'd be no reason for him to want out. He wanted a trade because he figured he'd get to play in the NHL with another team but if he plays for Les Canadiens, his objections I imagine would go away.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

jmsheehy19's picture

I think he's fitting in pretty well for a third liner, but if he's supposed to be a future power forward, than I completely agree that he should be getting first line minutes in Hamilton.

If all the stories of SK turning around his attitude are true, they should call him up and let him play on the second or 3rd line.

NHL salary cap revenue sharing

definition: a model by which successful Canadian teams prop up unsuccesful American franchises when the Canadian economy is stronger than the American economy and where Canadian teams are moved south to new American locations when the American economy is stronger than the Canadian one.

A. Berke's picture

there's not much anyone can do until the owners of the successful teams rise up and say no more.

IMO the cows will come home before this happens because the money suckers are in the majority and they go along with buttman.

I think the key is to get rid of the commish for a new and decent order in the NHL.

Ali B.

Think of the revenue sharing like income tax...the successful people (the evil rich) pay thru the nose, while the poor get to collect.  There is little to no difference - it's all for the "collective good".

Kind of a slow news day... so let's have a survey:

1. We'll make the playoffs or go golfing early?

2. Who have our top 3 players been to date?

3. Top 3 dissapointments?

4. Bergeron is getting better, or last night was a fluke?

5. Pleks for captain.  Yes or no?  If not, who?

6. Trade BGL, buy him out, or just forget he exists?

7. If Bob dumps one player mid-season, who and why?

1.  Playoffs

2.  Plekanec, Cammalleri, Hamrlik (honerable mentions Gionta, Metropolit, Georges)

3.  Markov, A.Kost, Lap (o.k so the first one is not fair but it is so very true)

4.  Neither.  I think he has always been capable of what he did last night.  Not good d but good o when he gets his chances.  3 of our last 5 goals have been direct resluts of his point shot

5.  nope, let him be just who he is now.  Cammalleri for captain.

6.  any of those

7.  no idea

VancouverHab's picture

1. Playoffs, two rounds minimum.

2. (i.) Gomez (unsung hero) -- gives the goods to Gio & Cammy, takes the heat off for Plecs to shine; (ii.) Hamr-Spach -- without them after Markov goes out, we're TO; (iii.) Plecs - Duh!  Honourable mention, Metro, Moen, Cammy, Gio, Gill, Halak.

3. AK, Gui! & Lats -- No Question.

4. Getting less rusty -- so better. Ever be solid? Think Beezer.

5. Nope -- too much. Gomez, for sure.

6. Trade

7. AK & SK: EJECT EJECT EJECT!!

Eliisa's picture

Good post SD.

1. I think we will barely make the playoffs and then last two rounds.

2. Plekanec, Cammalleri and Gionta.

3. Hurts me to say this but LaPierre (he started playing really well halfway through last year!), Gill and probably Gomez (I wasn't sold on this deal as soon as I heard about it, but I was hoping he would prove me wrong).

4. Fluke, I am still not impressed.

5. I don't think Pleks should be captain, he has great skill but I think there are other players who display more leadership, I would go Gio still.

6. Haha, does he still even play for our team? Useless, utterly and totally. I like watching games better when he is not playing. I don't care what they do - just don't let him play with the Habs.

7. AK46 and therefore probably SK74 too. What happened to these two? Ship them out as a package deal. I am done.

Smartdog, are you going to tally the votes up and give us some official numbers - like a real survey ;) ?

SmartDog's picture

Good replies.

I wasn't going to package them up... but I do sometimes post a concensus with some interesting follow-up.  I'll do that on the next thread.  The two things that most intrigue me out of this one are that 90% of people picked the same poor performers (Lats, Laps, AK)... and everyone seems to have different ides about who should be captain with Gionta and Cammalleri named most.

-------------------------------------------------- Pleks for Captain. He proves leadership on the ice every night.

SeriousFan09's picture

1. Playoffs, there's enough effort with this team to get wins, even with the depleted D-roster.

2. Plekanec, Gionta, Cammalleri

3. Latendresse, Lapierre, AK46, really disappointed in the last two, the first one I predicted.

4. He's flashing hot and cold, could be a sign of things to come though.

5. No, he's been a great on-ice worker but I think he's like Markov, likes to play his game and stick to that.

6. Trade him if we can, buy him out if not, either way, get him off the cap so we've got the cash to sign other guys.

7. Latendresse, 4th season and still nothing to show for it.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

Natrous's picture

One comment SD - Pleks can't be captain for one obvious reason: the way he handled his slump last season. There was a man that was a shadow of himself, completely drained and calling himself names. Yes, he has more or less completely redeemed himself after 19 solid games, however a captain doesn't come down hard on himself over and over and not turn things around on the ice.

That said, Bob still needs to re-sign Pleks ASAP as he is an invaluable member of the team and I like what he brings to the Habs A LOT.

Gionta or Cammalleri for captain (IMO). Perhaps co-captains together a la Chelios/Carbo back in the day.

SmartDog's picture

That's a good point you bring up re. Pleks.  It's a testament to how honest the guy is... really it is... but it was tough to see him so hard on himself knowing that he was probably hurting his own confidnece.  Still, I bet that drove him to work harder this past summer... he's come back strong.

McPhee35's picture

3 pm on Friday.. i needed this distraction, so, thanks.

1. We'll make the playoffs or go golfing early?

Playoffs - 2 rounds.

2. Who have our top 3 players been to date?

Cammi, Plecks, Gio (really loving Metro and Moen as well).

3. Top 3 dissapointments?

Lapierre! I had really high hopes for him and loved his edge. Latendress (this guy really could be the next Lucic if he just decided he wanted it). AK46 ---very sad.

4. Bergeron is getting better, or last night was a fluke?

It depends on what you've thought of him to date ;)  I don't see him getting much better defensively - but the occasional goal like last night's will continue to happen and string viewers along thinking... "is he getting better?!"

5. Pleks for captain.  Yes or no?  If not, who?

No.  Gionta or Cammi

6. Trade BGL, buy him out, or just forget he exists?

If someone would trade for him... TRADE HIM! if not, buy him out to free up dollars

7. If Bob dumps one player mid-season, who and why?

AK46 and/or 74.  they are an attractive package that could get us something nice in return, and don't seem to have what it takes to hang with the 'new habs'.

SmartDog's picture

Good answers.  I can't see Gio for captain anymore... not sure why because I was one of the fist to say he should be (based just on interviews and pre-sesaon play). But I think Cammi has what it takes... he's outspoken and he plays with not just fire, but flair.  So does Gio but Cami has the kind of glue that teams need... he's the kind of guy you want to win for, like a kid who goes after a girl even if he knows she won't give him the time of day... he has that kind of charisma.

Making Pleks captain before re-signing him may make as much sense as making Komisarek captain last year would have. The point is that nobody on HIO knows if Pleks even wants to play for the Habs next year! If he doesn't want to re-sign here I doubt that making him captain will change his mind.

SmartDog's picture

My answers:

1. We'll make it.

2. Top 3: Cami, Pleks, Hamr. (Gorges, Spacke, Gio honourable mention)

3. Bottom: AK46, Lats, Laps (I'm ignoring the fact that BGL exists)

4. Bergeron is getting better. He's still going to be a little soft on D but he's showing why he's here.

5. I think Pleks can carry the weight of Captain. I think he's made of that kind of stuff.

6. Drop him in a deep hole.

7. Gomez. I'm praying. But realistically, AK46... he needs a new start and there's bound to be a similar struggling player elsewhere in the same boat.

Sign Pleks now.  Give him 3 or 4 million and make as long a deal as he'll take.  Habs would have about 4 points this year if not for him.  As for Price, what kind of a raise would a <25% winning percentage get him?  Sign him at what he's making now or let him go.  Halak can carry the load until another #1 prospect comes along.  I remember when Hasik was a back-up in Chicago.  No chance he would be a starter either until one day...................you know the rest.

I have watched pleks in Hamilton with the dogs and since he has been with the habs.  He is definetly more engaged this year that I have ever seen him play.  He has always been noticable for the most part, minus last year.  But this year if he had people to play with he would be lighting it up.  Hopefully we get him someone to play with.  I would actually switch up GIO with Plec's and put Cammy with Gomez.

I have to admit I had my doubts about pleks this year but I am more than happy to eat crow on this one.

I sense repressed memories... Probably a sensitive subject.

...And now he leads the team in points with 17. Cammalleri is not too far behind with 16.

Plekanec is playing like a monster. I compared him with David Krejci and said when Plekanec is at his best, he makes Krejci look like an amateur. I'm glad I was right.

I'll go a notch in the other direction and say: "Bob, if you have any sanity, sign Pleks BEFORE the end of the year!"

Well a lot of people are talking about signing pleks. He is UFA next year... if he continues his good play you would have to think he would test the market. He could be 3.5 - 5 million a guy next year. I don't know if the habs will have the cash to go after him. We also have to look into goaltending as well beacuse both price and halak will be up for some raises and you'll want to sign them for about 2-3 years each otherwise they'll be unrestricted the following year(one of them is likely to be moved prior).

I remember hearing the cap might go down next year... When ever those figures are released, i would expect Gainey to start making moves then and not before to ensure he doesn't overspend.
