Price to start

posted by Pat Hickey at 12h11 EST on Nov 17

Carey Price, coming off a 53-save performance in a 2-0 loss in Nashville, will start tonight. He'll face Michael Leighton, whose shootout victory snapped a 14-game winless streak for Carolina on Sunday.

Ridiculous, Halak Still has a winning record, price shouldn't be allowed to start untill he's at least .500

Seriously though, I think this was pretty obvious. I don't know why Martin wont announce his starter untill game day.

Danno's picture

It's not unusual for coaches to keep their choices secret until the last moment. There are good reasons for this. For one, their choice goalie may wind up with the flu on game day - for example. Also, it's a good idea not to even let the goalies know because it keeps them both sharp and at the ready. You wouldn't want the non-starter to go missing in action by slipping away to go to sleep in his hotel room now would you? But that just wouldn't happen with professional athletes now would it????

I wonder if the other name in the trade to Edmonton is BGL?  His best years were there and he is doing nothing for us but eating up cap space.

don't know if edmonton would be interested in big georges and his big contract, especially when they have stortini.

Allot of talk here about how much time Gainey has here. Maybe it's time to flush the toilet in upper management. The thing that is amazing is how Lou Lamoriello can get the Devils to bring it consistently. What ever this guy is doing gets the job done. It's seems to start with the GM.

andrewberkshire's picture

However, when is the last time Lamoriello got the Devils past the second round? Isn't that the mark of failure we give to Bob Gainey every day 100 times over? All we've done since Gainey came in is bomb out in the 1st or second round is all I hear from people on this site lately. When's the last time the Devils did anything in the playoffs?

The Canadiens haven't made it TO the second round in 16 years? I must have been very drunk in 07-08 then, and several other years pre-lockout. The bottom line is that since the Devils won the cup in 2003 (Gainey's first year as GM), They've done absolutely nothing in the playoffs (according to the standards of many on this site). They haven't made it out of he second round a whopping ZERO times. I don't care about what the Devils did in the 70's, 80's, 90's or even early 2000's. The NHL is a sport of "what have you done for me lately", and lately the Devils are a dominant regular season team, and a middle of the pack flame out team in the playoffs. It's also not looking to get any better as Lamoriello the genius has done nothing in 10 years to try to find a goaltending prospect to take over for Brodeur when he retires.

Any criticism of Gainey's playoff record while pointing to the Devils since the lockout is a JOKE.

Do you see what's going on in Boston?

It's a good thing that only a few don't represent the majority!

Not surprised to see that many are panicking and calling for everyone's and each other's heads...can't blame them at all...I will continue to have faith in the team, be disappointed in the losses and bad efforts and glad for the wins.  I think they will be fine in the long-run (and before you guys get snarky, I mean long-run as in this season, not years from now or when more massive changes are made)...individually the players are or can be good, we have seen glimpses and flashes.  This is not a question of gelling or # of games to get used to each other...but a rough patch of win 1, lose 1, look good 1, look bad 1....I have faith in this team but I understand all the lack of confidence in this team and the reactions and words of the downtrodden.

They will make the playoffs and be good for at least two rounds...despite the evidence SO FAR saying otherwise.

And before you put me down, this is not rose-coloured glasses....rose-coloured glasses would be saying that this year's team is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that the team is full of potential superstars who will all breakout this year...I'm just saying that they will be fine and we will be satisfied with their performance for this season as a whole.

Well Mark, as your favorite player is a 7.3 MILLION dollar 18 goal scorer, I find it easy to understand your love of Bobo.  I am confident the rest of the season will be satisfying, and will exceed your obvious high standards.

I want to see Gionta in DC on Friday! :(

Despite JM's lack of steady lines, I like Plex back with AK46, it's just a matter of finding that ever elusive 3rd linemate to solidify a halfway-decent scoring line.  JM cannot gauge who can step up into this role with all of the indecisiveness that so evident to opposing coaches.

what a nasty ugly environment it will be if habs lose tonight. this is a game in which we have to win and show domination. hoping for some trades if things don't turn around. that being said martin is not going anywhere and the only way gainey goes is he is asked to resign by molsons.

No more trades please.  The last thing we need is more unfamiliar faces flying around the ice.  Then we're gonna have to start wearing last names on the front of the jerseys too.

Please Bobo, do NOTHING, try not to do more damage.  Just stay in your ivory tower away from the press, the fans and from critical assessment on your management.

SeriousFan09's picture

Gonna be a looooooong night with Gionta away, let's pray for a speedy recovery.

Still hold out some optimism, Lapierre/Lats finally wake the hell up, AK starts shooting, team moves their feet without Gionta to get them going...

lavie's picture

PleKosMetro line or PleKosKos line.

This will be one of those games that the Habs get outplayed but pull off a lucky 4-2 victory.  They will probably be outshot 2:1, will be out-power-played, but get a few key shots from unlikely sources and then Gomez will end it with an empty netter.  JM is clueless with the line combos, 20 games in and no stability, this isn't the culture this team needs, this team needs a real coach with fire in his gut, like Patrick Roy.

------------------------"Let this be a reminder that this organization will not tolerate failure." Dr. Evil

SeriousFan09's picture

Great idea! Then under Roy's guidance we could had Carey Price run out and assault Roberto Luongo when the team lost 7-1 in Vancouver earlier this year! That would've set everything right!!!

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

Man I was hoping that he might be named head coach after him and the habs kissed and made up last year. I'm sure in the future he will be, but not right away

habfan53's picture

Don't go there,  the last thing this club needed was ANOTHER head coach with NO NHL experience

I was also disappointed with JM.  I was hoping for either Robinson (said he was never talked to) or Ted Nolan, both proven winners

anotherhab's picture

We have enough of that type of player --- why would we be looking at Cogs! We need to get bigger and grittier! Maybe O'Sullivan would be a better choice - a bit bigger with more upside!

Also in watching the Edmonton game last night it sure would be nice to get Hemsky from them, a fellow Czech for Pleks to play with. Come on Bob Trade the Tits, Lats and a high draft pick - whatever they want! Nice to dream - I doubt if he's available though - first line player and all.

Also Souray sure looked good for his second game back --- like his confidence grit and shot. (just what were missing!!)!

TripleX's picture

If the Habs lose tonight to the WORST team in the league by far, I hope Bobo makes the honorable move and resigns.

The mood at the Bell will be ugly I think, with the crowd waiting for the worst to happen.  I bet Bobo will be nowhere near the Bell.

nick's picture

Just outta curiosity...

Two years ago, everyone thought MTL was going to come in last place.

Some how, Bob puts together a group (perhaps out of sheer luck) that win first in the East. They were good team who worked, and exceeded their potential.

Last years team was a good team correct? I mean everyone had us set to win the East, Contend for the cup.

Players underacheived, and there were some key injuries. MTL stunk the season out.

This year, Bob for the most part upgrades alot of the players (depending on who you ask)...

Again, players aren't playing up to their potential... Again, MTL is  facing injuries.

Can you explain to me how Bob could have done things differently? Or better perhaps?

Habsrule1's picture

Some posters do not think Bob has done a very good job, and that's fine. I'm just wondering what he should have done instead. The only thing I can get from what I"ve read on here is that he should have left the team more or less as is after last season...just tweaked it a bit. The fact is we don't know what went on behind closed doors. What we do know is Saku was ready for a change, and BG did try to keep Kovalev and Komi, to an extent.

What I wonder is do these people think anyone before Bob in the last 30 years did a better job? I don't and remove Patrick Roy from the equation, and there would have been no Cups in 30 years! The job is not easy and the fact that no GM has done very well at all with this team in 30 years is proof of that.

I, for one, really like that Bob managed to get Gionta and Cammalleri. Am I thrilled we picked up Gomez's contract? No, but it sure seems to me that it helped in getting the 2 UFA's to sign here....something that was not easy to do for a very long time.

Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

TripleX's picture

Who says this team is an upgrade?  I sure don't think so.  The team that won the East was a good not great team, that benefited from a weak division and an incredible PP.  Bobo dismantled that PP in his wisdom.  The following year the team was devastated by injuries, sub par performances, terrible coaching and bad management.

Instead of fine tuning, Bobo panicked and tore the team apart. He took the reckless and unprecedented move of trying to build a team out of UFA's.  This IS the team Bobo hand picked.  If he is NOT responsible for what we see on the ice who IS?

Do things better?  How could anyone have screwed things up things worse?

forskis's picture

You are correct in that this is the team Gainey hand-picked....it is hard for us to consider the UFA move reckless when MANY on here and in the fanbase wanted most of last year's team out the door...it is hard for us to criticize the move when he did what we wanted and that was to gut last year's team...so you cannot say he did not fine-tune the team:  adding Laraque and Tanguay WAS the fine-tuning...the whole team fell apart, so how do you fine-tune THAT?

If you want to complain that he did not get the UFAs that you wanted then go ahead but take into account the other factors.  If you were one of the VERY few who wanted to try again with last year's team, then I find that hard to believe because you were not thrilled with that group either....

"Even Roy can be run out of town after 2 Stanley Cups."

TripleX's picture

Again, if you doubt the veracity of my comments simply go back and read my postings.  I called for the firing of Carbo, as I believed that he was the single biggest problem with that team.

I never called for the dismantling of that team, and I never believed that there were so called "bad apples" infecting the franchise.  I never believed Saku was a bad captain, in fact he is my fav player.

You will find the ONLY people I criticized were Carbo, Gainey, Breezer and at times Price.  I hated the Gomez deal the moment I heard about it, and stated such.  I like Cammy and Gionta but they are not what we need, which is SIZE up front.  I admit to loving the deal for BGL and I don't know what happened to him.

Timo's picture

Like he said above - he could have resigned. But the only way things would get better if the Habs brought it competent hockey people interested in winning, not full of personal agendas, buddy-buddy way of doing things.

TripleX's picture

Hahaha, good old Timo gets right to the point!  Exactly, the BEST thing Bobo could have done last season was resign.

Why, which position is Gainey going to play?

I cannot understand the hate-on for Gainey.  He has to make management decisions, yes, but there are thousands of factors out of his control.

Players that he may want have to be available.  They have to want to play in Montreal.  He has to respect the salary cap for the entire team.  Etc etc etc.

Habsrule1's picture

I think Bob has until the end of the season. If no playoffs, he's gone. We see a slight improvement on our play without Markov, but that's not good enough. He has to find a way for this team to win with or without excuses.

Habsrule1's picture

Let me start by saying "in my opinion" and I'm not saying I'm right.....

No playoffs = Gainey should be gone. Any other scenario would take a little more thought. If they're just plain bad in the first round and lose, maybe Gainey is fired. If they play pretty well, but Price has a meltdown like he did a couple years back against Philly, then it's a judgment call. Or......

No Eastern Conference Final minimun, and he's out. I'd be ok with those scenarios. I'm not sure I'd say No Stanley Cup and he's out though.

afik's picture

i agree! however, i think we cannot wait until the end of this season. something has to be done before that in regard to the coach. to be frank - i had a bad feeling about him from the start (taking into consideration his "success" with florida in the last few years).

Habsrule1's picture

It's hard to really judge Martin. He was very good with a very good team in Ottawa, and not so good with a crappy team in florida. I personally think he's a pretty good coach and I doubt he's the problem with the Habs.

That being said, I'm getting a bit anxious to see Guy Boucher up here from all I've heard. The players need to care and give their all every game.

I still have some hope this team can get it together, but only time will tell for sure. They've shown some very good flashes and 6 of their losses were by 1 goal. The world is not ending yet.

How about Dustin Penner instead?

i have a good trade, how about sergei from hamilton to montreal.

Hayward4Price's picture

Aside from the fact that Tony is always biased to having more Italian players on the team, his sources are usually bang on.  I am lukewarm on this one though.  Another smallish, middle of the pack talented centre.  I guess it would be an upgrade on SK depending on who the other player is.  He is young, hungry, somewhat established and will probably pot 20-30 goals and 60-70 points when he reaches his prime.

I guess it all depends on what we give up for him.
