Cabbie redux

posted by Mike Boone at 10h42 EST on Nov 23

A fun Monday morning at practice.

The Score's Cabbie – last seen joking with a surprisingly loosey-goosey Carey Price after a Canadiens' playoff loss in Boston – dropped by Brossard to do a shtick with Mike Cammalleri.

Turning to the Montreal media, Cammy delivered a critical appreciation of Van Morrison. Check out the audio.

Jacques Martin had praise for:

• Carey Price, whom the coach lauded for hard work;

• Cammalleri, praised for his "bon éthique professionel", his shot and his obvious delight in playing in a passionate hockey market;

• Andrei Kostitsyn, lauded for commitment to winning battles, puck support and net presence;

• Tom Pyatt (speed and versatility) and Ryan White (size, physicality and positional play). "They play the game the right way," Martin said of the kids. "They make good decisions."

AUDIO: Jacques Martin | Mike Cammalleri | Tom PyattCarey Price | Ryan White

Carey Price: NHL's second star of the week. GAA of 1.89; save percentage of 94.0

Scott Gomez Not on the ice.

"Day to Day" is the official word.

Pat Hickey: "Is that day Dec. 12? Jan. 6?"

Therapy day for Jaro Spacek.

BGL had a 10 a.m. hearing, by phone, with NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell. He's skating in Brossard.

Quip of the Day, from Team 990's Denis Casavant:

"Campbell is considering a four-game suspension, but Bob Gainey has asked for six."

And if the Canadiens have to make a call-up because of the Gomez injury, Sergei or David Desharnais?

Hopefully, answers to come after practice.

HI/O is spending a sunny morning in Brossard.

First on the ice for 11 a.m. practice: the goalies, Max Lapierre, Tomas Plekanec

Lines the same as Saturday: Plekanec/Cammalleri/AK46; 3Ms; Lapierre/White/Pyatt; the Oil Painting

PP Unit: Cammalleri and MAB on the points, Pleks, Metro and AK46 up front

•  â€¢  â€¢

Saku Koivu is 35 today.

Also Team 990's Tony Marinaro ... who's old enough to get a real job.

KIDDING, Tony!

Love ya, man!

Pouliot was drafted 4th over all in 2005 one selection before Price.

HOLY COW!!!!!!

NEVER IN WORLD THOUGH THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!

GUILLAME LATENDRESSE HAS BEEN TRADED!! SERGEI KOSTITSYN HAS BEEN CALLED UP!!!

MORE NEWS!

Sergei's been called up!

Pouloit 6'3 200 lbs and a 1st round pick forth over all mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I think this is one player who is not performing traded for another player not performing. The difference in this trade is Pouloit is a first rounder who can skate now if he can learn the rest of the game this could be a steal for Gainey. I wish Latts all the best but the truth is this kid just can't skate well enough to play in the NHL.

MikeL's picture

I'd say Bob realizes Gui! is just too slow, and will never be what everyone thought he would be. It's simply an overhyped player for a huge underachiever. It's a good gamble, I think.

SeriousFan09's picture

I know Gui's short on fans these days, but does anyone else think this trade looks a bit one-sided considering Pouliot's got 18 career NHL points? I certainly hope Bob and Jacques see something in this guy. Seems like a guy who's going to have spend time with the Dogs and this drops us another roster player when we're rather short on personnel.

I know Gui's been mostly an empty uniform this season, but I seriously hope Pouliot is more of a steal than his numbers suggest.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

... Obviously you know little about Benoit Pouliot but your making a judgement just on stats. Think about his ice time under the Lemaire era and their style of play. Sergei just been recalled.

ooder's picture

how many points would Gui have gotten had he not been playing along side Saku Koivu?

and don't forget, minnesota is avery defensive team

Could have been just another one of those "I don't personally like you so you're gone" trades. Happened before, will happen again.

Timo's picture

Sigh... First Breezer, now Gui! Timo sad.

Fant-HAB-ulous's picture

OMG...I never thought they'd trade him.

This is crazy. Any info on this Pouliot guy? 4th overall in 2005, but doesn't seem to have done much since.

Wooaahh Latts traded!

Lats traded to the Wild for Pouliot

... What am i going to post about now?

At least he has the "right" last name, so media can't complain.

Bob bring up Desharnais he will Denis Savard the hell out of CBJ all night long. Don't bring up SK until his brother starts fighting for the puck and stops giving up on the play.

THIS JUST IN !! GUI ! GOT EXCHANGED TO WILD MINNESOTA!!!!!!  !!!!

----- Go Habs f*kin Go - AMEN!!! -----

Awesome! (Not that I hate Gui!)

We're basically trading an underachiever for another underachiever. But I think Pouliot has much more potential than Gui! so I'm very happy! Plus he's gone to the Western conference so he won't come back to bite us in the butt too often.

I can't read French, but it's just for Benoit Pouliot straight up?

Are you for real or are you just pulling our legs. I been checking all the sites I seen nothing yet.

Yes!!! CKAC says he's much faster than GUI.....for those interested, Gui will be talking to CKAC about it in about 10 min

I have some thoughts on Gomez:

If Gomez went on long term disability would we get cap relief?  Groin injuries can linger for a long time. Say he is out for two years, we could continue to pay him and then try to trade him. If his injuries are not serious we could send him to Hamilton and let him play there for a few years.  That could be dicey since if he is claimed on waivers we are on the hook for $3.5mm dollars. I am wondering if anyone would claim him for $3.5mm. Lastly is it possible to trade him and absorb part of his contract?  Just trying to be helpful to Bob.

mjames

pic1983's picture

Ill answer you hypothetical questions, but you're getting a little ahead of yourself, and gomez isnt THAT bad.

If he went on LTIR then yes we would get cap relief.  Theoretically, we could send him to hamilton (as far as i know he doesnt have a no movement clause) if he clears waivers (which he certainly would on the way down) but he would certainly be claimed if we ever called him back up mid-season, and 3.5 million is a steep hit for a player not playing, not to mention it would be degrading and no player would ever want to play in montreal ever again.  As for your last question, the current CBA does not allow for teams to keep a portion of salary on the books when making a trade, nor does the CBA allow for renegotiation of an existing contract.

To conclude, Gomez is here for the long hall, just ignore his ludicrous salary and Im sure you wont be as disappointed in him.

Fant-HAB-ulous's picture

That will never happen. Imagine committing 3.5 million$ a year to a player not even on your team? That'd be ridiculous. And of course he would be claimed.

What's with all the hate for Gomez? Is it his speed through the neutral zone, or his ability to make clean passes. Ask Cammelleri or Gionta if they'd want Gomez gone. Majority of their goals he assists on.

ooder's picture

i think this is the first time andrei kostitsyn finally got some good press explcitly going his way.

it`s very nice to see, and should hopefully motivate him further

pic1983's picture

Well pleks said it, hes the type of guy who needs positive reinforcenment to succeed.  Some players need to be lambasted to light a fire underneath them, while other players are their own harshest critic and the only way to get them out of a funk is to concentrate on the positives.

Timo's picture

Why do people care if Laraque gets suspended? I mean, how can it possibly negatively affect the team?

I think you are missing why most of us care Timo...we are HOPING for a long suspension to keep him out of the lineup.....I am crossing my fingers for 5 plus....

lavie's picture

No, Gainey asked for 10 plus...

lavie's picture

The Veggie Laraque will be more focused on skating and scoring than on fighting.

Timo's picture

He was focused on fighting?

lavie's picture

I wanna to be a new BGL, being veggie, fundraising for charity, once in a while playing hockey, but no fighting, no more...

lol

HardHabits's picture

I think that's BGL's delusional new self perception. He thinks that becoming a vegan has somehow transformed him into a hockey player. His new braided hair look is another step in the direction of flakiness. I am waiting for him to wear a rasta cap and start sayin, "hey mon" and "iray" in his interviews soon.

mjames's picture

I was glad to see AK46 get some recognition. It is better than being contantly slagged by the press , the coach and our famous Habs fans on HI/O.

Dintrox's picture

What the heck? Habs go for 5 out of 6 pts last week and TSN has them drop in the power rankings. I think they borrowed Campbell's dart board.

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.

Bryan's picture

I know I'm biased, but TSN always has the Habs way too low on their power rankings.  5th worst ranking in the league?  Really?

_______________________________

Not sure which Gainey bandwagon I'm on right now.

Iceberg84's picture

I agree. I guess we dropped in TSN's ranking because Gomez is injured. I think it's based on each player's statistical performance on the team along with some other strange math formula Scott Cullen pulled out of his a**. So since we lost one of our alleged-best players we go down a spot in the ranking.

I can't be bothered to read his article because it's long-winded and boring, but you can check out his 'logic' here http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/scott_cullen/?id=294742

mjames's picture

It could be because even though we did take 5 out of six points we were outplayed in each of those games, save for Washington where we played them about even.

mjames

andrewberkshire's picture

Pretty tough to outplay Detroit when they spend half the night on the powerplay. Although you're still wrong, we outplayed Carolina all game, outplayed Washington for long periods and outplayed Detroit at even strength.

habs being outplayed...that never happens

nickster13's picture

on the bright side, we got 3 out of 4 points from guaranteed playoff teams/stanley cup contenders.

Dintrox's picture

good week last week 5 of a possible 6 and carey gets NHL's 2nd star. on the downside the injuries are piling up with Gionta out and now gomer.

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.

nick's picture

Can someone tell me how Laraque's hit on Kronwall gets reviewed by Campbell. Where as Ladd's hit on D'Agostini, which resulted him in getting thrown out of the game doesn't?

It appears to me theres a lack of blatant inconsistency.

SLONCOLD's picture

hitting to the head is fine by the NHL, not the knees.

Hits to the head are way more dangerous in my opinion but that's the NHL. Plus would be hard to suspend someone for a hit to a head and then allow fighting... but then again i think fighting is pretty dumb in the nhl too

whose side are you on? throw the book at him.....

mjames's picture

Good point.

mjames

Because the clique running the NHL are a bunch of imbecile's

Dintrox's picture

Matt Cooke got away with a knee on knee on Donnovan on Thursday. hmmm

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.

nickster13's picture

Because i guess Ladd's hit was grey area, im not condoning it, but yeah i guess thats the reality of it, while laraque's hit is not in any way possibly clean, though i do agree both were uncalled for, but seriously laraque, come on man everyone saw that leg stick out and the foot come off the ice for extra leverage the tv dont lie

nick's picture

A buddy of mine at lunch said the same thing about Ladd's hit. What truly stumps me, is that he was thrown out of the game for the intentional hit. If a players thrown out of the game, shouldn't that warrant an automatic review? If it doesn't... why not?

habs-hampton's picture

Gui would have been 1st on the ice, but a bunch of guys blew by him in the hallway on thr way to the ice.

and then he missed the open door and walked smack into the boards.

THIS JUST IN.... BGL REFUSED TO ATTEND TODAY HE DID EVERYTHING BY PHONE.....HE WAS DEAD SET AGAINST "MEATING" WITH CAMPBELL!

SBAH's picture

whats your point?

the meeting was still considered an in-person hearing by the NHL.

lol....he was against "meating"!.....he's vegan...you can do it...2 plus 2 is 4, hamster spins wheel very rapidly, lightbulb appears over head!...there doesn't always have to be a point ..sometimes posts can just be really bad jokes when things are slow....I was expecting a very exciting news day in Habs land with possible callups and the BGL verdict....instead this is what we get.

crabvader's picture

Meating? He's a veg! No wonder...

McPhee35's picture

I think it's pretty funny that Gomez, our 7.5 million dollar player, went down and not only do we not have an official update... there aren't many (any?) posts who even seem to care.

If you think about any other player of that dollar value, and their importance to their respective teams - with all due respect to Marky and Gionta - you'd think this would be the lights out moment... kind of funny (and sad) if you think about it, how unimportant it feels in the scheme of things.

----------------------------

"C" is for Captain Cammalleri

mjames's picture

Good point. It just confirms that the press and fans in general know that Gomez has very little impact on how the team performs. Even the Pollyanna's who continue to support this trade are silent. Their silence in fact speaks volumes.

 mjames

Habsrule1's picture

We're not silent we just don't like to beat dead horses. I believe the trade was a necessary evil as Cammalleri said the fact that Gomez was here affected his decision and you can't make me believe Gionta was not a little happy with the idea of playing with the guy that helped him score 48 goals.

Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

you are beating the dead horse.....and trying to convince us with no more evidence than there is to the contrary..he toom the money and the opportunity to play in a hockley mad market that wasn';t in his backyard, he has an appreciation of history and some speculaate he always wanted to play here....http://blogs.dailynews.com/kings/2009/02/lombardi-cammalleri-regrets-no.html

What makes you think Scott Gomez attracts players....his 60 - 70 points a year? I guesss we'll be able to get anyone now because we have Scott Gomez right?

lavie's picture

You would see the difference if Plec was "injured" (hope never).

RiverviewCanadien's picture

So did George get a suspension? Didn't they already meet, or was that so Laraque could give his side of the incident?

SeriousFan09's picture

I think Campbell's in his office with the blindfold throwing darts at the suspension chart right now.

It's taken him a while though, he was probably facing the wrong wall.

So who thinks a Captain will be named at the Centennial game? Will they name him if he's injured or wait for him to come back (Markov or Gionta) or give it to a "sleeper" who we never would have expected at the beginning of the year and proves they were smart to wait (Pleks).

I don't think there's one fan that sees any value in George Laraque at the moment. OK, maybe a few, but they're in the serious minority. Put him on waivers or buy him out, trade him out west if possible.
