Bob Gainey's statement:
"Benoit Pouliot and Guillaume Latendresse are two players at the same stage of their careers who were still looking at making a place for themselves with the teams that drafted them. Often times a different environment, new teammates and a new situation can be beneficial for a player. Benoit Pouliot is a skilled player with good size. He is a very good skater with excellent skills and we intend to give him the opportunity to earn his place on our team"
The team's announcement:
A native of Alfred, Ontario, Pouliot played 14 games with the Wild this season, recording four points (2 goals, 2 assists), serving 12 penalty minutes with a even plus/minus rating and averaging 11:56 minutes of ice time per game.
The 6’03’’ and 199 lbs forward entered his third NHL season in 2009-10. Since he first suited up with the Wild,
Pouliot played 65 regular season games recording 18 points (9 goals, 9 assists), -1 plus/minus ratio with two tallies on the power play.
Pouliot who played his junior hockey with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves recorded 136 points (66 goals, 70 assists) and 243 penalty minutes in 122 games from 2003 to 2006. In 2005, he was voted Rookie of the Year in the OHL and selected on the League’s first All-Star Team. His efforts were also recognized at the national level with a selection on the Canadian Major Junior Hockey All-Rookie Team. Pouliot was Minnesota’s first selection, 4th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
...at first look it seemed that Pouliot ...an under-performing Francophone 'coming-home' would be a promising project to turn-around ...including Our needs for size at centre ...and a trade-off for another under-performing Francophone of the same age
...but from what I read ...it seems like Pouliot has had at most one or two seasons of not overwhelming results ...AND That was in junior ...apparently, Another Enigma ...with His head up His rear-end
...I will be pleased ...but surprised ...IF He turns it around

Enough of this Latendresse stuff, he's gone, the majority of the fans here are in favor of his departure. We'll probably hear Brunet accidentally mention his name while commenting on the game.
Now next year RDS has to get rid of Brunet, he's the only reason I hate watching the games on RDS.
I'm really wondering what the RDS broadcast will be like tonight.
I'll be watching!

5th best day of my life after the birth of my 2 children, my wedding day and the 93 Cup win....It is about time. I wouldn't have even cared if we had gotten a bag of poo for Latendresse. I am so happy he is gone. I can honestly say without ever meeting the man I hate him as a player and a person good riddance you piece of crap.
Well, we all know where you can shove your handle.
Hate him as a person? Could you elaborate on that? Sounds pretty stupid.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
He's a jerk of a person. He once pushed a kid out of his way, just because the child wanted his autograph.
Lats showed flashes of being a very good 3rd liner with 2nd line potential. Unfortunatley, he regressed this year and never did learn to go to the net. Not wanting to get his nose dirty got him shipped out of Montreal.
I'm dissapointed that he couldn't understand his role, but not really dissapointed that we finally gave up. I guess they didn't see any chance for change when it became obvious to everyone but him was his role was supposed to be.
Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy
Latalentless will end up in the minors where he belonged all along, man ,I am so happy they finally got rid of that big stiff...there is a God and not a Gui....thank you Jacques and Bob, you did the right thing.....FINALLY!!!
Anyone notice how Latendresse has taken zero responsibility for his reduced ice time? Like he didn't think there was a reason Martin shouldn't have liked him?
I'm sure that attitude will do just fine in Minnesota...
Whatever the outcome GO HABS GO!
Yea, I don't think I have ever seen Lats score a goal of that nature...lol(In the vid)
Totally disagree, Bidds. That comparison is like apples and oranges. There's absolutely no upside in Latendresse's game, none. You have Minny being a very defensive minded team, no worries there from La Tenderness. Then equate that to what Philly had before and since getting LeClaire. They could pop 4-6 goals every game, or, they could have punted a few field goals because of their football like size. Nuff said!
My God people, whether BP will be a bust or not, Latendresse brought absolutely NOTHING to the Montreal Canadiens!!!!
Besides being the top 3 in the team for hitting over the past 2 seasons right?
10% were real hits, the other 90% were bumps
James C wrote: "No surprise from a non-Gui fan. It'd be great to see the Wild send him down to the minors to learn the basics... say, had he ever seen or heard of Hamilton before?"
Yea, too bad Lats would have to be put on waivers for that to happen...He doesn't have a 2 way deal..Unlike Pouliot...
Ever think Gainey was trying to make room for SK? Gui couldn't be demoted and would have been a healthy scratch to make room..We free up a spot for Pyatt/White on the active roster so SK could get promoted..Pouliot will be sent to HAM for the remainder of the year...
It's Basically, Lats or SK..Who would you rather have right now? I know who I would rather..
LMAO @ Dean and Kerri
To answer that - "partner".
The television crew, forgot which one, did a feature on Latendresse last month. They interviewed him in his home with his girlfriend and new born baby.
Sorry Lats, me bad!
Is Pouliot francophone? I always figured he was, just wondering because it says he was born in Ontario.
that part pf ontario is east of the 417. Mainly francophones but some anglophones, near hawksbury. 50 or so klicks north of where Big Bird is from - Winchester.
Latendresse said. my partner is here.
Does that mean he's Gay?
You might have missed the part where he just had a baby with his girlfriend.
Not that a gay man has never fathered a child, but there you are.
I'm engaged to my girl and I have NO IDEA what to call her. So I sometimes call her partner.
You could call her your Woman, Ole Lady or Fiancé
Having met her, C, I'd call her engaging, thoughtful, and interesting.
And your biggest fan/booster.
But you already knew that. Happy for you both.
JD
First thing that popped in my head to. He played like he was.
Pff. What does that even mean? You buying into the whole gay-guys-are-wimps stereotype? Lame.
Every bit as lame as the plays-like-a-girl or kostitsyn-sisters comments we get around here.
Lame, prejudicial comment.
Lats played like he carried a purse. Under all that facail hair lies a make-up wearing purse holdin jock.. Have fun in Minnie (mouse) I`ve been waiting for this day since they drafted the @#$%%%.
I have never seen many Chuck Norris type gay guys. Damn, I just broke one on my rules of sticking on topic. But it is so hard to do that. It is so much fun in here.
"I haven't had so much fun since the Pigs ate me brudder"!
Again, not even sure what this means.
Oh, groan. Political Correctness on Habs I/O. Keep it on your own time, mate. Can we get the ice hockey back please?
Oh, feck off. How's that for political correctness.
While you're at it, read this piece about Burke's gay son. Might teach you something about Burke and gay people as well.
Arse.
And if it did?
Because Bob Gainey traded away a francophone, he had to get one back in return, otherwise the french media would have been all over him like a bad suit.
It's a roll of the dice on a player who may respond - probably a much better player than SK, about whom everyone's excited. I'd like to see Sergei show some maturity and score some goals with a decent work ethic in full view. Pouliot may show the same things. It's a gamble - Latendresse for a highly ranked prospect with downside. If he can skate, maybe he'll be a solid pick-up. People turn things around. Sometimes.
We aren't afraid to hope for Sergei Kostityn, so let's hold out hope for Pouliot. SK has a rep of being lazy and obnoxious, while Pouliot is just reputed to be lazy. If he can score, he opens possibilities.
As for the bashing about the injury - yeah, two weeks is friggin big.
2 words folks: John Leclair.
For all the naysayers, who will doubtless say this is a stupid comparison:
John Leclair's stats as a Hab: 224 Games Played, 49 Goals, 69 Assists, 118 Points
Guillaume Latendresse's stats as a Hab: 232 Games Played, 48 Goals, 37 Assists, 85 Points.
Keep in mind, John Leclair didn't play a regular shift in the NHL until he was 22 years old. Guillaume Latendresse is 22 years old now, and already has fairly comparable stats.
Realistically, Gui will not have the career numbers of John Leclair, unless he is given top six minutes, and has a very long, and fortunate career, but he has the tools to have a long, and reasonably succesful NHL career. I like Benoit Pouliot, but I think 5 years from now, we will look back, and realize Bob Gainey lost this trade, and probably badly.
Ha ha ha! That's very funny -- keep up the excellent comedy! This goes to show, even the most outrageous and implausible comments (Latendresse is comparable in the same hemisphere as LeClair!!!!) are still good comedy.
Hee Hee: Gui is like Marmaduke! Ha Ha! HAHAhAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
I just can't stop laughing!! ha ha ha ha ha! Bob Gainey lost this trade badly: Stop it! You're killing me! Ho ho ho ho he he he!!
Except Leclair showed up every game, and improved while he was here. Gui basically said in his interview that he was phoning it in this year, and had no interest in playing for the Canadiens.

Man, I wish this had happened on Friday so we could kick this around over beers. ;)
I gave up on the John LeClair outcome.
If you look at the points-per-game progression, LeClair showed steady improvement with the Habs, achieving 0.6 in his third and fourth years. He also visibly improved as a player. Most importantly, he altered his style to fit his physique and skill set, likely as the result of doing what he was told.
Made him an OT hero in the '93 playoff run.
Guimauve's PPG progression was closer to flatlining until last year, but still well lags LeClair's; and Guimauve saw plenty of ice time last year. This season he fell way off, largely through a blatant lack of effort and an incredible unwillingness to do what he was being asked to do.
Oh, and when LeClair was unfortunately traded, he didn't *** on the Habs.
In any event, see you at the funky l'il Second Cup on boul. St Jean, November 23, 2014. We can shoot the breeze.
JD
Book the date. Let's make it November 22 though, it's a Saturday. Call it 4pm? If Benoit Pouliot has more points between now, and then than Gui, I'll buy the tickets, and we can continue our conversation at the game. I'll be the guy in the Habs jersey, with "84" on the back.
If in five years, you're still willing to wear a Guimauve Habs jersey in public, you name the price.
Come to think of it, make it five months.
heh, I live up the street, I'll play fly on the wall for THAT convo
I hope Gui's a Leclair, for his sake, but every big guy who has difficulties is not Leclair. Sorry.
I remember Leclair falling more than any Habs player before or since. He couldn't stand up. But I hated the trade because he seemed to be getting better and better, and he played with heart and guts. Poor young Gui couldn't grasp the "go in front of the net and look for rebounds" instruction. He didn't want to hear it. He wasn't progressing very well, and he seemed like a hard guy to coach.
Pouliot out of Minnesota - big talented and underachieving so far. I have two words folks: John Leclair.
Well, maybe not, but just as valid. Russ Courtnall?
This is a gamble. It will either be great for Montreal or just the same. Lets face it Lattenderness was not really doing much out there. He is a big guy who can hit but rarely ever does. Pouliot (sp?) has great hands and speed and might flourish in Montreal. I would like to see both players do really well for their teams. A change of sceinary might be just what the doctor ordered.
Do you think John LeClair would have had the same career if he stayed in Montreal?
Do you think John LeClair would have had the same career if he stayed in Montreal?
Only if Eric Lindros played for the Habs.

I've been wondering if the Habs would trade for this guy for some time now, but I thought SK74 would be the one dealt for him.
If he ever lives up to his immense potential, this is a steal for the Habs. I worry, however, how much the pressure of being a French-Canadian (even if he is from Ontario) will do to him. I've often wondered how much Latendresse was held up by the fact that the french press had already annointed him the saviour and were constantly lauding his play.
Still, Pouliot has had a couple of years in a non-pressure-cooker environment (Minnesota may like hockey, but it still isn't Montreal). Maybe playing under all those banners will light a fire under his *** and with all these people hoping he will succeed will get him going.

Under the category of be careful what you wish for......
Yet another stupid move by Gainey, can somebody not fire him before he does any more damage to this franchise? Eesh.
Watch the Lats interviews on RDS, and then try to convince me that this kid didn't phone it in every night this year on purpose.
The team needs that kind of shite like a hole in the head.
I'm with Andrew here; at worst, this is a buck for four quarters.
Curious to hear your rationale.
Can you explain why you think this is such a bad move? As far as I can see Lats clearly stated he didn't want to play for this team anymore. Size is the same, attitude between the two is similar, both have reputations for being lazy and unmotivated, however Pouliot has much more potential and compared to Lats has dimensional skating ability. I call that a win no matter what. Latendresse wasn't going to do anything in Montreal, no matter how long we kept him.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens. Granted Latendresse had more goals and more points last year in an injury riddled season than Pouliot has put together in his entire career. We're picking up a kid who apparently refuses to back check, and is labeled as a bad attitude with no heart or work ethic (read Chouinard if anyone even remembers him anymore). At the very worst, at least Latendresse was able to play in a checking role with Lappy, if this kid refuses to back check, he won't even be able to play 3rd or 4th line duties in that role. He's clearly not coming in with an offensive resume warranting putting him on the top 2 lines either. So in effect, we lose a roster player at a time that we're hurting for roster players, one of the few guys with any size at all for that matter, and replace him with a guy that likely has Hamilton written all over him.
I don't see that as an upwards move, I don't even see it as a sideways move. Like I said though, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Latendresse backchecked? When? Latendresse had heart? When? Latendresse had work ethic? Maybe in preseason. Latendresse is only a roster player BECAUSE we have so many injuries. Every criticism you're throwing at Pouliot can be given to Latendresse, except Latendresse can't skate at all, and he's been given numerous shots at top 6 minutes on a dynamically offensive team, which Pouliot hasn't. You don't see it as an upwards move? Well Lats has 2 goals and 1 assist in 23 game, Pouliot has 2 goals and 2 assists in 14 games, so that's almost double Gui's production this year, on a TERRIBLE team.

We'll agree to disagree and see what happens I suppose. I see this as being a terrible move, I saw potential in Latendresse in becoming a desperately needed power forward for this team, I don't see any such potential in Pouliot. Time will tell.
I agree with you 100%. It is a win win for both teams. After hearing Lattenderness radio interview, he obviously was not happy. He should not have been happy...he was sucking the hind tit
I wish him well despite his classless exit, I hope he can score 20 goals this year alongside the younger Koivu, but I doubt it. As I've said several times, I don't see Latendresse as a player who wants to play, it's a job to him and nothing else. Doesn't help that he's going through personal turmoil as well.

Wrong. Best move ever.
No surprise from a non-Gui fan. It'd be great to see the Wild send him down to the minors to learn the basics... say, had he ever seen or heard of Hamilton before?
*Do as Sam Pollock would do.*
So is pouliot considered n.a.g or verteran youth?
HE IS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE!!! HE IS THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS!!
Or something.
Veteran Youth, North American Grit and is from the Region of Alfred. You are right, he is the complete package. He is clearly V.Y.N.A.G.R.A. Not to be mistaken for the little blue pill.
VYNAGRA?!
Awesome. Nothing better to revitalize an old european like me.
Hopefully that pill doesn't end up being a suppository.
Maybe his VYNAGRA will help our offence with its 'performance issues'...
He is also the "gros bonhomme".
Word is Pouliot was integral to Sergei missing the bus.
Stay tuned.
Is Chelios his father too?

LMFAO
Oh. You KNOW. You know.
Tell Dad I says hi
Whoa...open up a can o' whupass for this man!
He has already accomplished his mission which was to keep the proportion of francophone players constant. I can see it happening sometime down the road: What the hell will RDS do if there are no players to interview without having a translator present?
After watching White and Pyatt play against the Wings I was thinking to myself that Lats days were numbered. Laps better get his *** together or he will be gone bye bye as well. I hope that he can become the player that he was not too long ago. Hope SK74 can play some good hockey as well. Looking forward to the next game. Hope BGL beats the crap out of someone.......Oh right he wont be playing. Looks like we got a whole lot faster. GO HABS GO....
big fan of this scouting review
Pouliot is a very talented player who has yet to put it all together at the pro level. An explosive skater with a good handle on the puck and a hard, accurate shot, he has the tools to be a top-line forward in the NHL. Questions about his attitude, commitment to playing defense and consistency have dogged him since turning pro however. If he can master the mental side of the game and learn a more disciplined approach to the game, he could be a top talent. If not, he could find himself playing in Europe.
so at least he can skate, unlike gui
9 goals in 65 career games, the kid's got pure sniper written all over him, of course he's on IR with an upper body injury right now. Who cares if he's written off as a head case with no heart or work ethic and won't back check? That's exactly what this team needs isn't it?
He will be good. He has actually spent time in the minors developing. Lattenderness didn't. You will see.
AND does have talent, was ranked higher then Price in the Timmins book of '05
Commitment and Attitude ? ask SK74 - if the Habs can break SK74 - Pouliot will be a breeze compared to SK74!
Time will tell, but I like the odds of the fact the Habs won this deal.

Holy carp!
I actually go to WORK for a full day and all hell breaks lose! SK recalled.... Lats traded... VGL benched.... what's next? Gomez lost at sea? Forget I said that. All good news I think...
This is interesting (from the Wild press):
Although Latendresse's season has been sub-par, his production has been historically better than Pouliot's.
Ah well.. in this case probably worth a roll of the dice.
-------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!
Considering the fate of our GM's daughter, the choice of words there probably wasn't the wisest.
It clearly wasn't meant to invoke memories of that incident, only unfortunate wording. No need to even bring that up.

I would agree on all counts. Except for the inevitably dig at Gomez, which, as per your request, I've chosen to overlook. ;)
So is Sergei coming back chastised and remotivated? Or will he sulk? Is he being showcased, or is this a bona fide shot at redemption?
C'mon, a little jibe at Gomez is fair game surely. I musta gone 4-5 posts without saying his name. I missed it! :)
And I think Sergei is going to play his a$$ off. I think we'll see a revitalized rookie trying to show he needs to be taken seriously. To quote Spock, it should be "fascinating"
--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!
Well, to quote Bones, I'm a doctor, not a pro scout. But I hope the good attitude Boucher referred to carries over here in MTL.
What I'd like is for SK to force me to change my avatar. Come on Sergei. Show me the system. SHOW ME THE SYSTEM!!!
Gomophobia is a terrible terrible affliction indeed ....
