Received a great email from a Habs fan today named Ryan Stotland who has been on a 12,000 kilometre, four and a half month bike tour for charity. He has raised over $100,000 for two charities, one fighting skin cancer and one fighting climate change. His ride for charity has even been recognized by the Canadiens, with a message from Pierre Boivin included in a short video he put together. His website is www.12000km.org
From his email:
The even is called the vuelta sudamericana run by the company tour dafrique and
is the longest bike expedition in the world. It is a 12,000km haul from Rio de
Janeiro down to Buenos aires across to Santiago and the up to Quito where i will
be finished in 2 weeks.
As part of being a crazy habs fan I wore my habs tshirt through most of the
continent. Turned out to be a great way to meet people especially in the more
touristy areas or Machu Pichu and Iguazu falls etc.
I made a short music video compiling this pictures. When Pierre
Boivin found out he agreed to put the Canadiens support behind the trip and he
is featured in the middle of the video.
Anyway, I invite you to watch it and hope you will conisder sharing it with
your pasisonate viewers.
I am so surprised with P Boivin's English speaking. Wow, perfect billingual!
very very inspirational. Congrats to you Ryan, really, and keep on supporting both your causes and the habs!
cheers
Please tell me we are not wearing Toronto Blue sweaters again tonight. It was the only uncomfortable event of the whole Summit weekend.
Missing out for some of our group, some seeing their very first live Habs game. And they come out and play the game in Toronto colours. It was all I could do to just sit there and shake my head. Burn those sweaters fast please.
Cobb's waiting for the hot pink Valentine's Day Hab jerseys!!
How about the St. Patty's Day green ones? We can bring Roy back and hand out green 33 T-shirts.
All about secondary revenue streams boys.
I disagree, Mr. Cobb. I loved those, and a blue Cammy jersey is at the top of my wishlist this year.
Besides, I'm pretty sure WE had those colors before they did.
Go Habs Go!
Montreal to Dawson City and back = 10,000km, the thought of going through northern ontario, let alone along the base of the rockies, ugh... Machu Pichu is way up in the... damn I forget the range, the Andes? But at any rate if im not mistaken you can suffer from oxygen deprivation up there.
***Warning***Tongue in Cheek Comment bellow***
Its always nice to hear about people motivated enough to do things such as these, but come on... skin cancer and climate change? Maybe he should just create his own foundation against solar flares.
I am almost inspired to have a charity walk for Asteroid and Hemorrhoid Awareness.
Gator
The only inspiration from you to others would be a long walk under deep river with cement boots on.
Well, I am currently taking pledges, Ian.
Maybe I should explain a little... I am not taking anything away from his acomplishment, I am merely poking fun, much like the person I replied to, at the "fight against climate change".
Regardless of the reason for raising the money, although I don't agree with your comment, this is about giving your time for a good cause and giving back to the community. When did you ever raise $100,000? My point exactly!
When did you ever get struck by lighting, or bit by a shark?
my point exactly...or maybe not exatly, maybe a convoluted attempt at sophistry with a touch of hyberbole exactly.
Which brings me up to my next point. Take it easy. We all have our worth. lets not start measuring who is equal.
damn.. another point. and don't let that attempt at humor distract you from what I originally wrote: The trek is long and arduous and I admire anyone with enough tenacity to take on such a journey. Thats my plain english paraphrase.
an amazing life affirming trip...inspiring for sure.
...MANY years ago ...I was 'a boy' in Vietnam ...at that time, an extremely alien-disconnect to a soon-to-be young man still wet-behind His ears from Montreal
...I lessened that 'disconnect' by wearing a very well-worn Hab sweater (wool) ...underneath my fatigues in the field
...it served Me well ...though, from especially those of My peers from New York, Philly and New England, I obviously was a target for disdain ...But, those were the Glory Years of Our Team, and I met their disdain with My own Superiority Complex
...except for a few close calls, It provided Me a reassuring sense of invincibility ...naive though I was
...from Hawaiii, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, Cambodia and the Philippines ...I was inevitably asked by the curious what This, then, unfamiliar Garment represented ...I gladly explained, feeling quite similar to a Mormon missionary ...spreading The Word
...THAT, as I said, was a Long Time Ago ...and it is reassuring to see the continuing messianic spirits of some Habs' Fans are still goin' strong
Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY

Chris--the quality of our colours have served a lot of us very well in many ways my friend.
Great post!
Let me firstly say "thank you" for your military service.
I suspect we are about the same age (1944) and if and when I am back on the coast,I will give you a call.
Glad you posted this.
Oh dear... piggy-backing on another man's good cause...

Oh. and there's a free beer with your ticket.

That's good because that stuff will rot your brain :)
Good luck with the fundraiser - wish we could be there but there's a limit to how many trips I can drag Mr. Secretdragonfly on.
Congrats to Ryan! Awesome scenery and an even more inspirational effort for great causes! Your butt must be like an old worn strip of leather!!!
Determination.. inspiration.

Pasisonate viewers we are indeed.
I'm sorry. I couldn't resist. I'm ashamed.
Anyways, that's incredible. You don't have an appreciation for 12,000km until you've ridden 50. 12,000km is insane. That's gotta be like Winnipeg to calgary and back 6 times, or something like that.
Go Habs Go!
like going from BC to NS and back!
Which border to which border? Impressive either way.
Go Habs Go!
what the hell, Boivin's english is way better than i thought it would be, im used to him having like a typical strong quebecois accent then he throws in a deep sophisticated english. I love language.
Of course he's bilingual, he works for a corporation that is one of the biggest in Quebec and deals with other corporations in Ontario and the United States that entirely english speaking. Rhetoric and charm are important parts of developing positive business relationships and speaking proper english is important to cross-provincial relationships and especially when dealing with the NHL, which I am sure does not have a large contingent of french speaking administrators. Oh yeah, and he's well educated...
He's perfectly bilingual.
Worked in California for Weider, if memory serves me, before coming back to Montreal in the mid-90s.
