Update: Markov aims for early January return

A happy sight for Canadiens fans: a recovering Andrei Markov in front of his locker, talking to journalists.
Pierre Obendrauf, Gazette

• AUDIO: Andrei Markov (14 minutes)
• UPDATE: Stubbs column on Markov

Andrei Markov, sidelined with a sliced tendon in his left foot since Game 1 this season, skated briefly at the Bell Sports Complex this morning, for roughly 10 minutes. The Canadiens' all-star defenceman turned a few laps earlier this week, too, but playfully wouldn't say where.

Markov spoke to the media on a quiet day of optional practice. The 30-year-old, in excellent spirits and carrying a little more upper-body weight – all of it muscle – said he might be a little ahead of rehabilitation schedule, and is aiming for an early January return. He said he'll definitely be playing before the Olympics, but his participation in Vancouver 2010 "is my secret." That and much more in the audio posted here.

Today noon, Jaroslav Spacek skated with molded plastic shells over his boots, nursing a right foot that absorbed a Detroit shot last Saturday. Matt D’Agostini (concussion), Scott Gomez (lower body), Benoît Pouliot (hand) and the suspended Georges Laraque also practised. David Desharnais was returned to Hamilton, which suggests that Gomez will be ready to go Saturday vs. Washington.

An update on the clinic's patients, including a limping AK46, should come at Friday morning’s Brossard practice.

WOOO cmon markov we need you bud

To the beer talkers below.....this was in today's Star...lol where was this two weeks ago when we really needed it? http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/731656--this-32-per-cent-beer-is-as-strong-as-whisky

Hayward4Price's picture

If Gomez returns do we pair him up with Cammi again?  I'm inclined to say no as a reward to Pleks and to take advantage of their chemistry...but Pleks has proven he can play with anyone this season and still look good.  Gomez really has to get the monkey off his back and get some points on the board...maybe he needs Cammi more than Pleks at this point.  On the flip side, maybe a little extra adversity for Gomez is what he needs to pick up his game so saddling him with "lesser" wingers will force him to up his game.

Comments/thoughts?

SmartDog's picture

I agree with lavie below. Cammy and Pleks are like peanut butter and jam. They just go together.  The magic is there and in their interviews you can tell they like playing together.

Gomez and Gionta is a pair worth keeping. Gio knows Gomez's moves; so that's a astrong pairing. For their third they have LOTS of choices so Martin should be able to find a good fit - Maxpac whose play is coming alive, SK74 who has the vision and passing, even the new guy Pouliot (sp?) is an option as is (less likely) Moen for his physicality.

About your comment about 'saddling Gomez with lesser wingers'... this is part of what's wrong with him that no-one talks about.  He needs stars on his wings to be good.  Pleks doesn't.... the really good players don't.

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

lavie's picture

As I mentioned so many times previously, Cammi cannot find chemistry with G-G. We will have fewer chances to see Cammi-G-G line for the rest of the season.

If Gomez plays tomorrow, I recommend giving him two Big and Fast players, say MAX and SK74. Gomez is a set-up guy, and has fewer chances to make SOG so far this season. SK74 may help him with good stats.

lol....Markov speaks a foreign language and learns passable English and he can be captain? I agree he should be but the ironic thing here is .....that is pretty well the story of Saku Koivu....only in Montreal....

Bash's picture

And now we start to wonder what our lineup will be with everyone healthy.

Markov - Obyrne

Hamerlik - Spacek

Georges - Gill

MAB, Mara, Leach...someone has to go down but Mab and  Markov on the PP could be very good.

Pleks - AK47 - Cammi

Gomez - Gionta - Pouliot/Sk74

Metro - Moen - Max

Laps - ? - ?...Pouliot/Sk74, White, Pyatt, BGL, Dags, Stewart, MAB ...depending on the opposition

CRIPES! This looks like a team!

"If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

joeybarrie's picture

I don't think AK47 belongs on the first line, especially given this season so far.

Cammi - Pleks - Gio

AK47 - Gomez - MaxPac

SK74 - Metro - Pouliot

Moen - Laps - D'Agostini

The problem is in fact our Defense.  MAB would be great 2nd line PP. That would make us very dangerous. But we cannot get rid of our top 7. Markov, Hamr, Mara, Gorges, O'Byrne, Spacek, and Gill. I see Gill being the 7th. But I would like to see how he does when he isn't playing injured. I love Mara, his attitude, ethic and personality is something that really helps us. His stats on the other hand...

Good problems to have. However I anticipate with the open ice game, and the tighness of the East, we will continue to see injuries. Can we even send MAB to Hamilton. He will have to sit. What do we do with Laraque? White and Pyatt are also looking pretty good. I haven't seen anything with McDonagh yet, so it looks like maybe we did pretty good in the whole Gomez thing. Valentenko is useless to anyone in the NHL. Higgins (I was sad to see leave) not doing anything considerable, and Janik was a FA who is an AHLer anyways.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey...

Ak works best with Pleks...Gomez works best with Gio from what we have seen....the question becomes..who gets the reward of Cammi? right now I'd be inclined to say Plek's line gets him and Sergei or, Maxpac or Pouliot (we'll have to see what we have there) should be tried with Gomez and Gio...Pouliot or MaxPac would provide some size although neither is a very physical player.  Both are quick though and might work...I think I like Sergei with Metro and another capable scorer...I actually think he and MaxPac work together fairly well as MaxPAc has a decent shot and Serei will ensure he gets it off...Metro will be the stability....that would be my preference.  I have no idea what we'll do on d...gonna be tough....there are a lot of guys who may or may not have spots on this team anymore....some kids who have worked hard are going to get sent down just uot of sheer numbers and a couple of guys are either going to be traded for c prospects or waived outright....many, many tough decisions and the evaluation is already underway....

SmartDog's picture

It's AK46!!!!!

And I think he does belong up front.  The last couple of games he's come alive and he's been putting up points.  He plays well with Cammalleri and especially Plekanec. They all seem to like each other - ALL are good passers and all are scoring threats when they are on. No way that line should be changed.  Plus... Gomer and Gio is a better pairing, with a whole list of guys who have now had 2nd line minutes and can help.  I'm betting on Maxpac because his game has also started to shine and he has some weight to throw around.  SK might be possible for his passing and vision.   It'll be intersting to see.

I'd like to see Mara traded. To me he's been the worst bust on the D. Even worse than Gill.  With Markov back we have more than enough guys - almost too many. Mara would be worth something as a rental to a team that's lacking some toughness on D.  And for us he's the biggest minus of our D core, and seems to make foolish decisions, take penalties at bad times, things like that.

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

I think the third should eventually have Metro and the two who aren't in the top six of SK74, Pouliot and MaxPAc ...that would be a third line also capable of putting pucks in the net...but with Metro I would feel responsible defensively.  Lapierre would then be back where he belongs on an energy, defensive line with Moen and possibly Pyatt or even MAB ... the addition of MAb and the emergence of Pyatt and White sure ahs made thing interesting though as Dags could be on the outside looking in...Chips is pretty much an after thought.... there deos look to be hope for offense though with the Kosty's playing, Maxpac finding some confidence and Pleks meshing with Cammallerri.....very interesting indeed....disappointing that we won't see this lineup in action for sometime but something to look forward to.

Many tough, tough decisions ahead....it will be something to see who fills the spots.....who is dealt or waived and who is just in the wrong place att he wrong time and is sent down....I think all of them have to happen by the deadline on some level.

SmartDog's picture

This seems close to right...

There's a real problem with SK74, MaxPac, Pouliot all potentially able to fill that other 2nd line spot.  I'd put my money on Max though.  And you don't have MAB in there.  He might be useful as a third line and PP guy.

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

lavie's picture

Even though I like SK74's style and talent, I agree with you on betting chips on Max. There are uncertainties with Pouliot and SK, but MAX is a stable guy.

http://www.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/story/?id=299735

interesting stats from around the league on TSN.....Hammer and Spacek are leadingt he elague in turnovers but despite that I am super thankful we have them...Chips and BGl are among teh worst plus minus per minuters in the game and no other Habs appears on a list but there si still some good stuff on there. Malkin is the worst faceoff guy in the league! who knew? Kostopolous in 3rd in the league for roughing minors lol....I guess htat is what he gets when he hangs on for dear life after dropping his gloves and knowing whats coming....still a fan of the Kosto though. They give no consideration to Gaborik as MVP? weird.....at this stage he would be vote...we'll see if he lasts the season but as of right no...I think I give it to him..even over Ovechkin or Kopitar.  They also include Del Zotto and Tavares as runner ups to JVR for the Calder ...and who knew James Van Riemsdyk is actually the best point epr minute guy in the game....as a rookie!! interesting stuff....

Ed's picture

Interesting stuff indeed. Noticed that Brian McGrattan is up there in Points per Minute Production, & 5 on 5 Goal Differential, while been way down there in ice time. Obviously he has been making the most of his limited ice time.

Streit is 7th in takeaways, while Grabovski is tied for 2nd in penalty differential (his speed), & 1st in 5 on 5 shot differential. Chipchura & Laraque are 5th & 6th from the bottom in goal differential.

I never really liked the turn-over stat.

Obviously puck-moving defensemen who play over 25 minutes a game are going to lead the league in turnovers.

I agree....they can play for us any day.....it is interesting though because wiht the emergence of OByrne, Gorges and possibly a guy like Leach who seems adequate as a 6th dmane and MAB actually playing better.....all of these guys are very, very, affordable....makes for interesting decisions....they can help offset our overspending on the big little three.  So, if an opportunity to upgrade the scoring presented itself this year or next...who goes? Gill? Spacek, Hammer? Mara? Two of them? We have a serious logjam on the back end of our d and this isn;t even considering all of the other kdis who are knocking on the door.....crazy actually....

hey can anyone tell me if the brossard facility is open to the public everyday. I want to go to this mornings practice.. But just wanted to know if I can lol.. Also if it is, when should I arrive? And is there a fee?

You can watch, but it's from behind a glass wall.  Anybody can go, and there is no fee.  Not sure what time exactly they start at though...

Here's a funny Friday topic...Does anyone else have a six beer rule during the week when they watch a habs game.  In my house my dad and I had to impliment this rule especially because of the those nail bitter games when the stress level gets high.  We get so stressed that all the beer always dissapears no matter how many are in the fridge...So now we only buy six each so we're not total bags of s**t at work the next day...

The rest of our family thinks we're nuts especially when there's a family dinner and we turn the TV around to watch the game!!

Anyone one else with some funny habs habits ??

PrimeTime's picture

My brother and I phone each other during every intermission but rarely during the game unless an out-of -this world play or obvious missed call. After a win, we continue the conversation for about an hour but rarely phone after a loss....probably just to subside the pain.

IT'S A TEAM GAME - Go Habs Go!

HEINEKIN or STELLA Tallboys.

The rule is one per Period.

It becomes quite an internal dilemma when overtime comes around.  Yes, Les boys could lose a point, but the rules do state that I get that extra beer !

Obviously its worked out pretty good this season except for the Red Wings game.

Habs OLE !

Jocko's picture

I can't say that I have any weird habits, as the kids are to young and the wife could care less.  I do have a few interesting stories about the last two Cup victories.  In '86, a group of my friends and me all cheered the next morning, riding through town on our bikes.  In '93, we were a little older and brought our travelling road show to another town that was predominately Leafs Fans.  Sweet Victory!

I don't want to see Maurice tonight, I want to see The Rocket!

Xtrahabsfan's picture

6 beer every period ,hicup..............

artgagnon's picture

on week nights I have to ration the beer to 2 per period...it gets tough

Habsrule1's picture

Nice!

I had requested a Habs traditions thread last season, and while some thought it was a great idea, it never quite took off. I did get a pretty good list of them though, which I still have and planned on putting it onto the thread eventually. Perhaps if enough of us let the HIO guys know we'd like one, they'll do it...??

For me, it's fairly simple. I always wear one of my jerseys, and have at least one beer in one of my Habs glasses or mugs, using a different one each time, but in order of their placement on my beer glass shelf at my bar. I also always light my neon Habs logo. Now I'm slowly getting my boy in on some of my HABits....not the beer drinking yet though.

If I forget any of those things, and the Habs lose...I know why.

travelsized's picture

My boyfriend and I *only* drink Heineken when we watch the games. It's kind of tradition, and it's our favourite beer. We also have a little candle that we light only for games, and a particular brand of chips that are "game night" chips. lol yeah we have a few weird habits too.

Corio's picture

I am always amazed how many people like Heineken, it's honestly one of the worst beers ever created by man, almost as bad as Beck's and Corona..

No offence of course  :)

Habsrule1's picture

In my experience, I find people who drink Corona, Heinekin, and the like, generally are not beer lovers. These beers, along with Bud and a few others, are very watered down and way too smooth.

I think we should all drink beer brewed in Quebec when we watch the Habs games....preferably from a Quebec micro-brewery ;-)

Corio's picture

I really like Unibrue(sp?) beers like Les Trois Pistoles, it's all natural and has a full flavor.  My wife who isn't a beer drinker told me that was the best beer she ever tasted!

I detest Molson products with the exception of Molson Canadian which is actually a decent lager.  To say Heiniken is better than Molson Ex is like comparing the flavor or urine with that of waste water.. :)

Hayward4Price's picture

Don't ever tell that story to BG - else he'll tell you that he doesn't bake bread ;)

pic1983's picture

I can definitely agree that Heineken isnt as good as its popularity would suggest, but I would hardly say its one of the worst beers ever created by man.  Definitely better than Molson export, or labatt IMO.

In fact, seeing as beer and hockey go hand in hand, heres my top 5 beers, and I would love to hear everyone elses favorites:

1 - Holsten (German import, Available at SAQ)

2 - Guinness

3 - Moosehead

4 - Rickards Red

5 - Alexander Keiths India Pale Ale

HardHabits's picture

I don't why, it's like those mini Coke bottles, but Heineken tastes better in a can.

Some  of my faves in no particular order:

Heineken

Stella Artois

Kilkenny

Boddington Cream Ale

Boreale Blanche

McAuslin Cream Ale

Hayward4Price's picture

Never tried #1 but given your apparent impecable taste in beer I may be inclined to pick some up this weekend.  I'm with you for #2 - 5.  After softball games in the summer those are favorites.  About 10 years ago...maybe 15 at this point, I was all over the Sleeman's.  So much so that I bought shares in the company.  Eventually they got bought out by Saporo (not a bad beer either) from japan and never had one since...no real reason to have stopped...I don't even know if they still sell it in fact.

Corio's picture

I like buying the beer called 'FAXE' from the SAQ.  It's a Danish beer and wicked good!  Tuborg is also really good..

Turn the TV around to watch the game?  How about a 32" LCD on the wall in the kitchen above the table!  As for the beers, no limitations.  Retired, no work in the morning. ;)

artgagnon's picture

those little things we all do during a game make it so much fun!!

I hate going to weddings because I try to watch everygame and I usually miss just 2 or 3 a year because  someone's getting married on Saturday...I've actually seriously considered skipping some but wasn;t allowed too :S

We also we never talk about Carey Price's play during the game...any word good or bad can jinx him....as soon as the game is over we starting yapping about Carey's play...all good talk as of late!!!

A habits thread would be cool!!!

"We also we never talk about Carey Price's play during the game...any word good or bad can jinx him....as soon as the game is over we starting yapping about Carey's play...all good talk as of late!!!"

Its like when people drop the S-Bomb in the third period when a goalie is on a shutout bid.  Huge Faux pas.

24 Cups's picture

Markov's English isn't half bad.  I wonder if we could kill two birds with one stone by making him captain when he returns from his injury.  That would set the stage for his staying and signing long term.  I realize you're not allowed to re-sign a player until he is in the last year of his contract, but surely some kind of unofficial discussion could go on about dollar numbers and term.  Markov will be 32 when his contract is up, so some kind of front loaded deal could be worked out and we would have a real captain who is worthy of wearing the "C".  If not, then we risk losing Markov which means we would have no hope of a Cup run in the near future.

The same goes for Carey Price.  Lock him up the way all the other teams do with their young stars.

huge_polar_bear's picture

I think Markov mentioned at the begining of the season that he was not interested in the captaincy.  I think Markov is a good leader on the ice, but can you really see him standing up to a ref on the ice when there is a bad call.  Or standing up in the locker room and giving an inspiring speach to pump up his teammates when their down a goal going into the third?  I just don't see him wearing the "C".  That does of course by no means mean that I do not see him as a leader on this team give him an "A" but I still would prefer Gionta or Cammallari as captain.

From the various good feel news stories out of the Habs, have mostly come from Gomez.  And Gomez, as opposed to Gionta or Cammy, actually stands up to the other players, or you will see Gomez chatting it up with the refs.  Gomez is a natural leader and would wear the C with pride.  Imagine if Gomez had the C, what other great players would agree to sign with the habs?

The Cat's picture

The guys english improves and suddenly the guy is captain material? How knee jerk can you get. Captains got to turn it up in the playoffs, not disappear. Gionta, Moen, Metropolit and Cammaleri are all better choices.

Hayward4Price's picture

I don't think he's ever dissapeared aside from when he was injured.

Jordio-oh's picture

For what its worth, Markov has 14 points and is +3 in 41 playoff games. Not the type of point totals he accumulates in the regular season. Again, stats are only one part of a measuring stick.  We were clearly in trouble against Boston last year without him.

pic1983's picture

Yeah I never got that either.  If anything Markov has been our most consistent player over the years.

Very impressed with Markov's interview. I agree that he should be captain. Now if the team can just keep around that .500 mark until he gets back. Then, LOOK OUT!

I dont know why Markov said his participation in the Olympics is his secret. Just how stupid are we supposed to be? Thats what I dont like about this whole thing, he may rush himself to play before the Olympics just so no one says that playing for Russia is more important than playing for the habs.

Kooch7800's picture

The Cat, I thought the same thing about rushin back for the olympics.  Carey Price did the same thing last year for the Stupid All-Star game and look what happened.  He went from playing great to being a goalie who lost all confidence and could not stop a beach ball.

Highly doubt Markov would be that unprofessional.

Playing for their country is very important to them. Its understandable. Its like if I was in some storied ping pong league in China itd be hard for me to attach it with the same importance as the locals if I didnt grow up with it, and hence playing for my country would be more important to me on the heart scale.

I agree about soccer.  Most people that dont like soccer just dont get it.  It is a very slow and tactical where very often you have to move back before you can move forward, and thats what I believe annoys the casual viewer.  Playing EA Sports FIFA series gave me huge respect for soccer.

As for baseball....Maybe if there werent so many overweight and out of shape players, and they didnt take a minute between every pitch so the batter can do their little routine, I would enjoy it more.

Hayward4Price's picture

Love baseball...huge softball player (not in stature but in enjoyment).  What's left a bad taste in my mouth and really tainted my baseball watching enjoyment is all the juiced players.  Ignorance was indeed bliss.  If ever something similar happens in hockey, I think i will cry :)

Steve Yzerman played with a wrecked knee in the 2002 Olympics, and had to withdraw from the rest of the regular season that year (save for the very last game). Was it wrong that he put more importance in playing for Canada (and being very, if not the most, important piece in capturing the gold) than his contract with the Wings?

Yeah, thought so.

As some of you may know, Hollywood actor Viggo Mortensen is a big Habs fan, and here's what he had to say about the centennial game in Montreal.

Mortensen, already wearing a navy Montreal Canadiens jersey over worn jeans, pulls a Canadiens knit cap onto his head. Like that he’s transformed, not just into everyman but into every hockey fan. He may be an acting chameleon - crazy-sexy in one movie, scary-dangerous the next, then slumped-over broken - but there is nothing pretend about this performance. Aragorn from “The Lord of the Rings’’ trilogy talks trash, and today his target is the Boston Bruins, who play his team next month in Montreal.

“Good luck, Boston,’’ Mortensen says, sounding utterly insincere. “It’s Montreal’s 100th anniversary celebration on Dec. 4. You’re going to be at the Bell Centre. And I think it’s going to be a very difficult night for Boston. ’’

On his IMDB page, it states that: For his role in Eastern Promises (2007), he stated that part of his performance was inspired by Russian hockey player Alev Kovalev. I think he's also the English narrator for the Habs 100th season DVD set.

Anyways, I'd love to see Aragorn kick Lucic's ***.

Yay.

Mike Myers in a leaf jersey; that's a story. Aragorn giving insight on the Cammaleri signing, that's a story.

But a PR moment with a supposed Hab-lovin actor who DOESN'T EVEN throw in his two cents on the Boys, no matter how incendiary the view, when a glorious opportunity to do so arises??? That means two things: 1) He ain't a real Hab-fan (pow!) and 2) That ain't a story. (socko!)

I'da said "Keep the rosey, shmosey sh*te to yeself, ye Hobbit-lovin summamabastich."

Ayan_SB's picture

Bugs, you're just wrong on so many levels. Viggo grew up in Upstate NY and apparently has been a Habs fan since he started watching the great teams of the 70's.

This ain't no PR moment, this is a man who went to a Toronto Film Festival appearence waiving a Habs flag, was at the Oscars couple of years ago, and showed the Habs shirt that he was wearing underneath. There's a video of him during a movie premiere (in which he's wearing a Habs pin) and a fan gives him a Habs puck signed by the players and he's sincerely surprised and shakes the guy's hand out of gratitude.

Mike Myers? Mike F. Myers? He's been delusional since that movie The Love Guru, in which the Leafs are in the Stanley Cup. Hah, talk about fictional.

OMG you just shook me up there. I clearly remember reading HI/O that night but prior to registering and commenting (that came later that fall). I was home, recovering and between the debut on the ice and the posts that night I was pulled in, completely hooked. Thanks for this.

Best news I've heard all year.

Get well soon but not too fast Andrei. We miss you.

Okay boys, 25 games have already gone by. What has been your favourite moment so far this season? On or off the ice. Or maybe both.

Clay4bc's picture

Not exactly one moment, but...I loved seeing some of our Bulldog players making real impacts on the games - and not negative impacts. Leads me to believe there may be hope for our future yet!

Honorable mention to MAB for his 2 goals the other night and overall great game, after all the flak he takes in here...

The play of Tomas Plekanec. Who knew he had it in him!

Eliisa,

Here are the 2 most important points that happen so far during the first 25 games that changed Carey Price's game around. The off ice comments made by Halak's agent that woke him up and his 53 save performance against Nashville on the ice. Keep up the good work with your post on HI/O comments.

Price makes 53 saves but Canadiens lose 2-0 to Predators

Maybe not my favourite but my most important has been the play of O'Byrne. I have a feeling he'll be THE tower of strength on the blueline for the habs for years to come.

i'm torn really... two moments stand out for me.

  • Price's shootout win - the glove save / stare down AND the skate save / clearing the puck off the line  made me jump out of my seat . I was excited and relieved at the same time . Happy for the Habs ,happy for Price(finally a Bell Center win) . It was so many emotions all rolled into one . GREAT moment altogether!
  • Cammalleri's overtime winner - Our Montreal Canadiens showed alot of fight in that game .They were down 2 goals on 2 different occasions (3-1 & 4-2) but never gave up.Cammy ties the game 4-4 with his second of the night ! Overtime underway. Cammy gets the puck by his own blue line ,makes a turn and gathers up speed, flies past the benches and makes a move at the Rangers blue line, cuts to the middle of the ice and surrounded by 4 blue shirts BAM! TOP CORNER!  Place goes nuts , I go nuts ! Cammalleri gets his hat trick ! HABS WIN HABS WIN HABS WIN

I'd love to say the victory over the Leafs to start the season, but that was tainted by Markov's injury. Maybe because it's so recent, but I'm going to say Tuesday's victory over Columbus. Why? Because it was a game where we were outmanned against a better team, but still found a way to win. We came back from a deficit twice.

I think that will be the underlying theme for this season - through perserverance, determination, competitiveness and a JM system, we will find ways to win games.

Not as flashy as a hat trick or a 53-save performance, but a solid testament to this team's character.
