• At a Glance: Things didn't look good early on for the Canadiens Saturday night as the Washington Capitals took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period. But as has been the case for the Canadiens lately, they battled back and had a 3-2 lead with 11 seconds to go before the Capitals tied it and eventually won it 4-3 in a shootout. Niklas Backstrom scored the winner in the shooout, the only one of six shooters to score in the bonus format. Eric Fehr and Alexander Ovechkin opened the scoring for the Capitals, with Ovechkin's goal coming on a bullet of a shot that Carey Price had no chance to stop. Jaroslav Spacek, Tomas Plekanec and Travis Moen scored for the Canadiens, with the Spacek and Moen goals coming on the power play. Fehr scored the tying goal during a 6-on-4 power play in the dying seconds of regulation time.
• Key Moments: Early in the second period, Price made two great saves on Ovechkin to keep the Canadiens in the game and set the table for the comeback that allowed them to at least earn a point against one the NHL's top teams. Price ended the game with 20 saves, while his counterpart, Semyon Varlamov stopped 21 Montreal shots.
• What It Means: The Canadiens have taken 8 out of a possible 12 points in their last six games and lost for the second straight time in the shootout, dropping their record to 12-12-2. The Canadiens have earned 3 out of a possible 4 points against the Capitals so far this season.
• What's Next: The Canadiens now embark on a tough month of December that sees them play 17 games, the majority of which are on the road. Up first are the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, the Sabres in Buffalo on Thursday and the Boston Bruins in town for Dec. 4, the game that will wrap up the team's centennial celebrations.
Lats could learn something from this kid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3ak8oigIZU&feature=related
I thought that was Lats.
The loss of one point was a downer. How we lost it sucks. And why Paul Mara is out there in the final seconds I have no idea... Mr. -10 compared to Cammalleri's +10, the guy is our own miniature version of Komiserik.
But despite that black mark on the game, I'm feeling optimistic.
It's quite something that our team is playing as well as it is with who we have sidelined. We held the Caps to their lowest number of shots this season last night - without Markov, and without a handful of other regulars. Our call-ups actually are looking like quite a strong set of role players and not like the lazy premadonas (let's be honest) we had earlier in the year.
Players are finding their rhythm - guys like Spacek and Hamrlik, Obi and Gorges, even MAB, are stepping up. The play flows smoothly most games with good break-out opportunities and lots of good 2-way play.
I'm impressed as always by Cammalleri's comments, his no-quit attitude, his will to win. To me he's that heart and soul guy that will kick butts in the locker room, and get the boys going when they need to. Plekanc is more the on-ice leader who commands the play, gives a tap now and then to a rookie to let him know he's doing well. I see these guys as our leadership pair. Pleks with his smart play and quiet confidence; Cammy with his in-your-face attitude and dramatic goal-scoring ability. It might not be Gretzky-Messier but it's as close as we've had for awhile and if left to grow, these guys could just become the core of a team that can become one of the elite in the league.
I hope so anyway, and hope doens't seem so bad, or so unwarranted now.
One other side thought.... Despite Price's strong performances most of the last few weeks, Halak needs to play. There are teams and circumstances where Halak does well or Price doesn't do as well. Surely getting Halak some ice time would be good for everyone. If Martin waits for Price to have a real stinker before putting Halak in it's just going to be worse for Price's confidence. Let the kid ride the pine for one or two games within cofidence, knowing he's done well, it's just the other guys time to block a bit of rubber.
--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!
"Oh, terrible pickup, no size, weak defensively, stinks in the corners, a 7th at best, put'm on waivers."
Took'm five less games than the Spaceman to lead the D in poins. 6th leading scorer on the club. Eats peanuts.
The new Breezer, what!

MAB stands for Missiles After Bungles. He bungles the puck a few times, then fires some missiles.
It's a MAB MAB world.
We can't put the blame on no one but Price in letting 2 goals in the first. We had as many chances as Wash.on the power plays.
I'll go with the majority here.Completely unfair to say Price is to blame.
If it weren't for him the Caps could have easily walked away with this game, but Carey gave them a chance to get back in it, then almost win it. Ovechkin was stoned at least three times after they were up 2-0, don't forget that.
If you want to blame Price then blame him for not scoring in the shootout, that would be a fair assessment lol!
They call me Shane
Last night, same thing. I'm not laying blame or getting into the stoppable-or-not angle cuz both are beside the point regardless even of the fact that I thought he played great again (I have confidence with him in net now). Point is, he let in the tying goal with seconds left in the contest.
Last night, we lost. So he could not have "stolen" the game. But if we had WON in the OT or shoutout, NEITHER could we have qualified it as a "stolen game" by the Priceberg because had he closed the door earlier, we wouldn't even be there, win or loss. The time to "steal" has passed since the enemy leaves with at least a point he never should've had.

Thanks Bugs!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hate to be a nit-picker, but "We can't put the blame on no one but Price...", actually means, "We can put the blame on everyone but Price..." which actually might be a tiny bit closer to the truth;)
i hate to be negative, but unless something really drastic will be made with the team in the near future - this year's league is lost!
Although I can't quite decipher your comment "this year's league is lost", I will respond to you with a question: Are the returns of Gionta, Gomez, AK46, and most importantly, Markov, drastic enough changes? That's the equivalent of inserting 3 top-six forwards and 1 all-star defenceman into the lineup...
Only in Montreal would fans consider a player with 2 goals in 24 games "a top 6 forward".
Every player goes through slumps. Gomez has been a top-six is whole career, as has Gionta. AK46 was not playing well at the beginning of the season, but had 5 points in 4 games before he was injured. Spezza has 2 goals this season...is he considered a top 6? What about Getzlaf with 4 goals? Drury 2 goals? Havlat 2 goals? Backstrom 4 goals?
it sure is! however, you mentioned Markov and Gionta. do you know when it will happen? i don't! 1 month? 2 months? they say at least 1 month! you are so sure about their quick (and efective) return. well, i really hope you are right.
I'm not sure what kind of impact they will have...it was more of a question rather than an opinion...
But I highly doubt that any big trades are coming...Gomez's salary prevents any upgrades...
you honestly have no hockey sense whatsoever! who lost the face off at the end of the game which if we had won it we would have won the game, who took the stupid penalty at the end of the game causing there to be a faceoff in our end when we were just clearing the puck, how is this prices fault? ITS NOT!
Seps,to say I have no hockey sense, because I blame losing the game is on Price (That is my opinion). He let in 2 goals in the first with 4 shots.Sure he played good in the third with 9 shots.Than when he tried to clear the puck out of his zone he gave it away in the last min.causing a mixup to the defence.
Saying someone has no hockey sense is outright ignorant.
But you do have no hockey sense, look at what you said he gave the puck away causing a mix up but did he make up for give the away, yes he did he scrambled back and saved it. Then off the faceoff he stopped ovies one-timer which almost no goalie can control and no d were found to stop the guy going in for the rebound so yeah "the game was prices fault" right?
Right. It's a team game and any of those guys could've made the better play to preserve the win. In that situation, faceoff win or lose, you have to prevent Ovechkin from shooting!
----- Their defenses are broken! Let the slaughter begin!
Why does there need to be a blame??? It's a team game.
Thank you for your rationality, Smiler. Coach's job is to correct mistakes, not to assign blame. Players' job is to constantly work on improving your game. Assigning of blame is a useless and counterproductive process, though very human. It must make some people feel better though, because it happens a lot. Just for the record, though, when a team has two extra guys on the ice, and the puck is bouncing around the goaltender, chances are it's going in the net. With video replay it's easy to say, "If he'd just done this, or that, he could have saved the puck." We're very fortunate that we don't have video cameras following us around all day at work. I imagine the feedback we'd receive wouldn't all be positive.
Get real my friend. Sure the second goal was ugly but Price kept us in the game & gave our team a chance to come back from a 2 goal deficit & take the lead. The whole team played well and considering the good players we are missing, last night's game was a victory in my books.
I love this team.
Huh? Wow Can I vote this most senseless post of the year? Or is that now taboo?
Senseless post ,you get real.I have been a Habs fan for 50 years and I love this team.I also love Price and know he has been playing well and it is his job to keep us in the game.Make all the excuses you like he let in 3 goals .It was the team that kept us in it the game, not just Price.
Whatever you are smoking, keep to yourself. Obviously you were watching a different game. We all know the whole team played well but if you don't think Price's KEY SAVES in the 2nd & third gave us the point, then so be it.
come on, Price did his job to keep us in the game when he robbed ovechkin on a breakaway and the made a great save off the Ovie shot when the score was 2-0. Price has nothing to do with highsticking an opponent in the last minute or losing the draw in the defensive zone with 15 seconds to go. Not blaming anyone, just sayink Price played well and the team as a whole deserved the 2 points last night
your posts are nothing special either ,although you probably think they r.
Nah, me special? get real!
who were the canadian shooters in the shootout?
c-a-n-a-d-i-e-n-s
Listening to the audio I noticed that no one, from the coach on down, is blaming the refs for that last call. Everyone is giving that consistent message, "We have to stay out of the box." Although I think Mara was victimized, and that a lot was let go, including a spear to White's manhood, it is always a loser's game to blame factors beyond your control for your loss. It becomes a habit which can quickly turn into a "poor me" mentality, and that's never a good thing for a team. I'm glad no one is whining, even though in this case they might be justified in doing so.
No one might be blaming the refs, but it was a week call especially in the final minute. The Habs played a brilliant third period and there was nothing for the refs to call and I can bet once the Habs got the lead they were looking for any little thing to penalize them and in the final minute Mara gave them just what they were looking for.
I been watching all the games and the one thing that pisses me off the most is when we get a penalty no one on the coaching staff or the players ever yells or complains to the refs about it being a bad call. Last night for example didn't anyone notice on every penalty that was called on Washington, Boudreau as letting the refs have it. To me he was letting them know that their officiating ucked and was probably trying to get the next one for his team. Martin and the rest of the coaching staff doesn't do this and I guess the refs say well we must be right he didn't say anything and the keep right on dinging us for 4-5 pealties a night.
Last night is the only night where I think the opposition had more penalties than us in any game. I can't wait till we start getting our regulars back. We should be nly that much better.
Sorry, can't go along with the "all the refs are against the Habs" thinking. I would agree that I seem to be seeing more games this year that are generally poorly officiated. I doubt very much, however, that chirping at the officials does anything other than get them pissed off at you.
Actually, when White was having that discussin with the ref about what happened, White actually said, and I quote, "He had his stick up my ***-hole!" and then skated away quickly.
I never knew that part of his anatomy was called his manhood lol.
P.S. A far cry from having a player who slashes someone after a perfectly legal body check and White, don't you think?
Sorry, had to step out for a couple of hours. Not sure who you're referring to about the slashing comment, (maybe Gui?), but if you're complimenting White on his restraint, I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Hehe, not Gui. A player from last year now on a different club who was in the penalty box when a goal was scored last night :)
Ah, the Komosaur.
"For us, it's not good enough," Cammalleri said. "A lot of guys in here are upset. I don't really care who doesn't expect us to get the points. In this room we expect to get the points and we think that the way we've been able to play as a unit has been an effective way to get two points in a game and once again we put ourselves in position to do it tonight, so this group here is not happy with the one point."
Gainey may have made some controversial moves but he sure got this team ''character''
they'll need to think like this for the month of december
ps- could it be possible to replace chips-wyman-leach with pouliot-gomez-d'agostini on tuesday or is it too early for their returns ?
Gotta love Cammalleri & the new attitude of this team. Worth every penny.
Though Tuesday might be too early for all three, I believe we'll see them all next week. Next to return after that should be Gill, followed by Gio, then Marky in Jan. If we can finish Dec. within 6 pts of a playoff spot, I think we'll be in good shape for a playoff run.
so , i was reading some of the comments, and saw some from this dude named Jeff ... noticed he ruffled alot of feathers, personally, I dont understand why people get all uptight over internet comments ... obviously, he comes from timmins which only has 1 great thing to offer, Ms Shania Twain so, there isnt much for a kid to do ..right ... then I saw the picture .. lol ... wow .. talk about a shocker ... so, Jeff the Kid is a middle aged ( ok ... a little past middle ... ok .. alot past middle ) man who comes onto Habs boards to taunt .. yea, its pretty sad ... but hey, if the guy has nothing better to do in Timmins .. cant we let a balding , slightly past middle aged , rotund man have some fun ... he has nothing better to do on a Saturday nite ... so go at it Jeff .. your team sucks .. our team sucks a little less ... 2 decades 4 decades .. whatever, enjoy ..
on another note, man, is Shania Twain HOT clearly not the same DNA runs in your family eh Jeff ...

Another Gainey in the making! The more I see of this White kid the more he reminds me of Gainey when he started. Man he is good defensively! I remember when Gainey broke in with Murray Wilson, Chuck Lefly, Jarvis, etc. At first I thought what is this?? Than later we know the Russians called him the best hockey player in the world when Lafleur was dominating hockey. Too early to compare but this White kid has a great stride and plays his position like a veteran. I hope he stay around for a long time.
So you're saying White is a future Hall of famer???????????????????Talk about overrating our players.
i'm like you .. i think he is an effective NHLer ... plays a hard nosed game which I admire, but I just cant get overly excited over players like White, Chipchura & Pyatt ... they remind of players like Begin, McPhee, Skrudland ... nice, but expendable.
Chipchura really needs to step it up to be considered in the class of players you names. They all had effective careers, he has not.
White is awesome, reminds me of the 80's when we had guys like Skrudland, McPhee, and the like.
LOL no! It reminds me of the 70's. We only won one cup in the 80's!
Our team was fun to watch in the 80's though.they were competetive and had alot of guys that would make the other teams pay for beating them(Nilan,Kordic,Corson,Momesso,M.Hunter,Robinson, maley,Ludwig, mcphee) Wow that was a tough team,I could have kept typing.!
But it was a GOOD Cup!
By the way, how did SK not get an assist on Plekanec's goal? Didn't he tip the puck on goal just before Pleks put in the rebound?
It's a MAB MAB world.
Somehow I am so much more content after a loss this year then last year. The goal is obviously winning but this team is just more entertaining and when they do loose it is never because of lack of effort (well only 2 games this year due to lack of effort IMO) and they never seem to be out of it. It's really encouraging that we can compete with some of the better teams in the league even with a makeshift lineup.
MAB is mezmerizing to watch. He is so... odd.. he scares the hell out of you but fascinates you at the same time. He makes you cringe but then wires one when you don't expect it. He is bizarre. It is a MAB MAB world and I love it.
Any logic on having Chip out on the power play?
It's a MAB MAB world.
Thats the effort everybody wants to see. Extra thumbs up for White + Pyatt.
The tying goal with 11 sec to go though...
Great game!!! Habs played very well and officating at its best again. Imho, Laich should have been penalize too. The Refs should have called both for roughing. How the Refs allow a player to be in the goalies crease with no puck is beyond wonders. The Habs deserved better results tonight and Mara did his job but got a penalty on the play. Better things to come Hab fans and when this team is healthy who is going to sit?
Stop it.!!!! We lost.Again. I am so sick of the excuses. grow up. People here are as bad or worse than the Leaf fans, which BTW this team will soon be like if we don't get a real G.M and a real scouting dept. We gave up another last minute win. We have 3 top 4 d-man when markov gets back, and the rest are #5 at best,or #6 dman.there's still enough experience not to choke in the last minute.
Latendresse scored. The Wild are giving him the ice time, even on the PP.
Well that's good for him. They gave him the same here and he did nothing.
Jeff McGlynn, I know this guy, he lives just down the street..........
Price is a really good young goaltender but he needs a counterpart(Halak ) to elevate his game (Like Huet did) and every time I've seen Price start with the no.1 position, his passion dimmers a wee bit....Start playing Halak more to keep the competition hungrey.....
I agree. It cant be easy for Price, people have associated such high expectations with him that in a way, he'll never be good enough in their minds until he steals the cup like Roy did...He recently had a good 7-8 game stretch, and people were annointing him number 1, were ready to start him for 70+ games, he had earned a spot for the Olympics etc...Things dont change on a dime, it takes time. If the habs gave other young players on the team half the vote of confidence they do Price instead of putting them in the doghouse, we wouldnt be trading away potential 30 goal scorers like Ryder and Latendresse.
Ever since I read this about NBA refs...I often wonder if it applies in the NHL too.
excerpts Blowing the Whistle, by Tim Donaghy.: "we would make a wager on which of us would call the game's first foul. That referee would either have to pay the ball boy or pick up the dinner tab for the other two referees. Sometimes, the ante would be $50 a guy.....There were occasions when we would hold back for two or three minutes — an eternity in an NBA game — before blowing the whistle. It didn't matter if bodies were flying all over the place; no fouls were called because no one wanted to lose the bet."
more here: http://deadspin.com/5392067/excerpts-from-the-book-the-nba-doesnt-want-y...
thats crazy! i read as much as i could, long...but good read
"I went to see a fight the other night...And A hockey game broke out!" ~Rodney Dangerfield~
I have noticed that Price usually gives up a goal or 2 early in the game and then usually closes the doors after that. If only now he could close the doors right from the get go we would be fine!!!!!
once all the boys come baclk from injury the team should be fine
Pretty annoyed with the officiating. For over 59 minutes they let the battling in front of the net go. With 15 seconds left, all of a sudden it's a penalty. So, Max Pac gets tripped with a minute left in OT, but its not called... It's pathetic how bad the officiating in the NHL has become. I guess Gary Bettman and Co. have low standards like the leaf fans do...
It's been pathetic for a good long while.
I'm with you. My thing is that I just want refs to officiate the game BY THE PRECEDENTS THEY SET!
If you're not gonna call something all game, don't go ahead and do it when there's less than 5 to go in the game. It's insane.
down by two and the never say die attitude kicks in and we storm back to tie, then take a three two lead shows this team has heart. with an attitude like that we can go far. again, once we get gionta, gomez, markov back well be alot better. all we had to do was dump the puck out of the zone down the ice with 30 secs in third and we had it. so close ,so close, got one point, thats good. carey didnt fold after two goals thats great too.
i dont believe pro athletes should compete in the olympics, isnt the olympics supposed to be for amateur athletes only? when did this change? the allmighty dollar changed that im sure, big names draw more tik revenue.not right. markov shouldnt go to olmpics thats totally insane, he's hurt, then he'll come back and risk more injury ,crazy stuff.
