Canadiens to honour legends

posted by Kevin Mio at 17h46 EST on Dec 4

As part of their ceremonies Friday night, the Canadiens will retire the numbers of Émile "Butch" Bouchard and Elmer Lach.

Bouchard's No. 3 will join other legends in the Bell Centre rafters, while Lach will see his name added to the No. 16 already retired for Henri Richard.

Happy 100th anniversary Habs.

Figured this would be a good time to show off my Habs "wall of fame", autographed 8x10 collection I have hanging in my office.

Tears boys tears.

If we loose after that tonight. The boys have no soul.

Wow...what a ceremony. Congratulations HABS on your 100th Anniversary.

I have lived in Toronto for many years but all my life I have been a HABS fan. Yes, they have peed me off for many years but during my younger days I loved going in to work after yet another Stanley Cup and my co-workers were quiet as if nothing had happened yet I know they were at home the night before cursing and swearing at the HABS on TV as they skated around with the Cup. I always waited for the right moment then would calmly say "Hey did anyone watch the game last night".... They were so pissed off I`m sure they hated me but I didn`t care I would stick it up their butts every chance I got...Thank you HABS for giving that to me. I now tell these guys not to feel bad there will be a huge celebration in a few more years to celebarte the Laffs 50th Anniversary.

The rest of the league could only dream of what we have been treated to over the past 100 years boys and girls.

What memories we keep with us.

haha, Serge looks like a grumpy bastard

If I was O'Byrne, I'd tell them where to stick it.  I wouldn't change my number unless they bought the number off me or when I left the organization.

bostonantifan's picture

You have the type of character the Habs wouldn't want in their organization, you wouldn't have to worry about leaving.

aemarchand11's picture

Yes, O'Byrne would tell the team where to stick it.. You my friend, are ignorant, a three year NHL player has no pull in any deicison.

Cheers,

Andrew

You're either being sarcastic or have the same intelligence or less than the person represented in your avatar.

Best news I've heard in a long time. Can't think of two more deserving candidates.

I only hope a second firing comes this week from the new ownership in Montreal. I don't mean the coach either.

Instant Karma's picture

Well, I'd fire the coach as well! The game has passed them both by I'm afraid.

O'Byrne may have to double it up to #6.

Already taken, Jaroslav Spacek.

No disrespect to Mr. Bouchard and Mr. Lach who are both deserving but ....

Toe Blake, #6

T.C.

saskhab's picture

Yeah, Blake was my fav of the group of non-retired numbers as well.

Of course, now we have only 2 single digit numbers available:  6 and 8.

SeriousFan09's picture

Cool, I always personally found it a bit surprising before that Bouchard didn't have his # retired. O'Byrne will have to get creative for his new number I believe, doubling it won't work and neither will reversing it as #30 seems to be a special goalies-only number around the league.

saskhab's picture

#8 is available.  It's a good number for both forwards and D.

xaverian001's picture

It certainly isn't going to be honoured for Komisarek.

doug's picture

Hilarious that they're retiring surprise numbers tonight.  These guys are just so cute and clever when it comes to non-hockey-related product.

Now, about this year's edition. . .

I don't tend to care if the Canadiens win or not any more.  The uniforms and celebrations and reflections and statues - they make it all worth the price of admission.  They should change the tickets to be "double features" - Act 1: celebration of oldest living fan and panel discussion of greatest games in Habs History, Act 2: Hockey match.  In the second Act, they should re-enact old games rather than play new ones based on the one identified as most interesting in Act 1.

Excellent news and most deserved accolades for two legends of the team.

Elmer must be beside himself. Should've been done years ago but thankfully it's not too late.

Natrous's picture

So does O'Byrne change his number then??

Robert L's picture

Number 8?

Any guesses?

aemarchand11's picture

Ryan O'Byrne #20

Cheers, Andrew

Maybe the newly vacated 28..? A little Desjardins, a little Dykhuis..

HardHabits's picture

LOLZ!!!! That would be awesome!!!

habsgirl87's picture

Wonder what number o'bryne is gonna take?

In Gainey We Trust!

Dintrox's picture

Finally ... Lach will join the Rocket!!!!!

Elmer Lach's #16 jersey should join the Rocket's #9 in the rafters.
