Canadiens' Travis Moen and Flyers' Scott Hartnell crash into
the net behind Carey Price during the first period Monday night. Dave Sidaway, The Gazette

• At a Glance: The Canadiens trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes against the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night at the Bell Centre and Montreal had only one shot on net. But the Canadiens found their legs in the second and third period for a 3-1 win over the Flyers. Daniel Brière opened the scoring in the first period, his 11th goal of the season. But that is all Carey Price would let get past him, stopping 14 of 15 Philadelphia shots. In the second period, the Canadiens beat Brian Boucher twice, with Andrei Kostitsyn scoring his third of the season and Michael Cammalleri scoring his 16th of the year on a nice pass from Maxim Lapierre. It was Cammalleri's fourth goal in the last two games. Marc-André Bergeron, who started the game as a forward but was used on defence after Paul Mara left the game with an upper-body injury, scored his sixth of the season with a bullet on the power play. In all, Boucher stopped only 10 of 13 Canadiens shots. Montreal killed off all four of the Philadephia power plays while scoring on one of their three opportunities with the man advantage.
• Key Moments: The Canadiens scored two goals in only six shots in the second period, and those were all the goals they would need for the win.
• What It Means: Montreal moves back to .500 with a 14-14-2 record for 30 points in 30 games, tying them with Tampa Bay. The Canadiens sit in ninth place in the Eastern Conference however, because Tampa Bay has played one fewer game.
• What's Next: The Canadiens get right back at it Tuesday night in Ottawa against the Senators before returning home to play the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. They then play in Atlanta on Saturday.
Well I think we all agree that Gainey screwed up on Gomez and Laraque. But he did ok with Bergeron! Lets hope Pouliot is also a great addition. GO Habs Go!
Well one thing we can look at, we did get some sweet goals last night! Go Habs Go!!
Hey Bash....you must understand that most Hab fans are passionate, really, really passionate, unlike fans from other teams. No, we cannot accept a loss. No, we cannot accept poor play. No, we cannot accept anything but all out effort on every shift no matter what the score. Weakness of any kind, regardless of the player is unacceptable. After victory we can sleep well and be happy. After a loss, we are miserable and grumpy until the next victory.
We expect our Hab players to produce all the time, no weaknesses, no excuses, and when they don't we will vent the only "safe" way we know how.....HERE.
Love those HABS
Passionate I understand....total lack of faith I abhor. And this team has the passion!
A loss for a team that is simply one of the parity gang does not mean we have to burn the house.
Constructive criticism is worth reading.
This crew "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)
Where have all the doomsayers gone?
A win over Philly and only 175 comments?"
Oh well, the few hangers on can still dump on Gomez's salary and Laraque's lack of contribution...until another target pops up.
I wonder if Pouliot will become the whipping boy. Perhaps it will be a debate about his worth vs Sergei's and who should play with Gomez. One bad shift should just about finish him and Bob will be called to task for giving up Latendresse.
Another day with the Habs fans pretenders!
"If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)
Is it not okay to critique a guy (who happens to be making 7 million) for making horrible passes to the opposing team late in a fairly close game? or is he off limits?
Is it not ok to critique an enforcer who does not stand up for his teammates when they get run at?
I am really excited about the 'new' Habs (team and century), but no one is off limites to be called to the carpet, and this is a forum to share the thoughts on the team, for better or worse. Being critical of players does not make us any less 'real fans' (ie: pretenders).
You sir, are a turd.
----------------------------
"C" is for Captain Cammalleri
Nope, it's not okay to critique a guy based on his salary -- only on his play. If Gomez were making $4M, he wouldn't be attracting nearly so much criticism, and you can hardly blame the guy for signing on the dotted line when Sather offered him a ridiculous contract. I know I would have.
As for his play, he has consistently been one of our best, most energetic and smoothest-passing players this year. He's not exactly a giveaway machine either, with just three more giveaways this year than Plekanec. Does he need to get more points? Absolutely. But the criticism here of him has reached Latendresque proportions, and the man has done nothing to deserve that.
Touche.
I'm not an avid Gomez basher, just defending my right to vent. Overall, i'm fairly pleased with his game, just surprised to see those two giveaways last night at such an inopportune time, for a guy notorious for perfect passes.
----------------------------
"C" is for Captain Cammalleri
I'm fine with accepting that Gomez is a setup guy, and not expected to score 30+ goals...
But as a $7+ million dollar passer, he should not be making giveaways like the two (in one shift) last night in the third. yikes.
----------------------------
"C" is for Captain Cammalleri
Laraque is the biggest waste of space the Canadiens ever had. A desperate fight for no use in the first period, and he lost again, just like in Washington. What does Martin see in him? I mean Pyatt is a player, take him. He is an insult to the jersey. It's not his fault, but why play him.
Tell me what makes you think he lost the fight? because he lost his balance and fell? He hit Cote many more times then Cote hit him.....after that fight the flyers "Physical Presence" was non existent, so tell me again how Larocque is a waste of space. I like Pyatt but he would have been pounded by Riley Cote...
I dont state this as fact, but I wish someone that could would state them, but, I bet the habs winning percentage is higher with Laraque in the lineup than without. It seems that way anyway.
with him in the line up habs are 6-5-1 that includes that horrible 0-5 run in oct. in his last four games played the habs are 3-0-1.
"The Future Belongs to Those Who Believe in the Beauty of Their Dreams." Eleanor Roosevelt
Thanks a bunch soflohabsfan, youre the man.
I am too lazy to check the stats as well, but agree (as much as i HATE to admit it!). The team plays fearless just knowing BGL is on the bench - we look pretty timid when he's not in the lineup.
----------------------------
"C" is for Captain Cammalleri
He did help with the puck on the boards, leading to the second Laps and Cammalleri 2 on 1. (The one they scored). That play was worth an assist. So he does contribute in some minute way.
Let's hope this is the start of a good streak for the month, the numbers are starting to work against the team if Montreal can't build above .500 hockey this month, basically, if we project Markov getting back around Janaury 10th, we need to go for 2 wins for each loss by then, .667 hockey upon his immediate return to the lineup for a guaranteed playoff spot, since the team's OT record has done so well, I doubt we'll get a lot of OT loss points in that mix.
I have faith in the team right now, I do but this month is the true make-or-break for avoiding early April tee time.
By the way, if you open your sports section tommorow and check league top scoring, that's not an illusion, Tomas Plekanec and Mike Cammalleri are both there, at #'s 25 and 30, been a while since we saw two Canadiens on that isn't it?
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
hopefully the goal by A. Kosts will unblock him. So far his grand total of 3 goals have all been flukey. I want to see A. Kosts score a real goal scorer's goal.
Yes but he zipped one off the cross bar as well...he's palying SO much better than earlier in the year...he's a least a threat now...
DD...
I'd settle for two of those tonight.
Habs played good tonight.
Flyers need a goalie....Halak? The flyers have a few Quebecois players ,so that would satisfy the brutal french media. I wouldn't mind taking D or O player from them. Give me a call Gainey.
As for those of you who have fallen In love with Mab, He scored tonight and played we'll, but he scares the poo out of me whenever he's on the Ice. He looks and plays like my nephew, way toooooo small and Is not my type of D.
I can only hope Kovi doesn't put on another show tom. In a way I want him to just so I can see that stupid look on Gainey's face again, you know the one where he looks like Homer Simpson. THe Habs would be a much better team If they would have kept the double KK's, especially the Captain.
Please win tommorrow.
I LOVE the Habs!!!
Too many shots to the head, Kordic buddy. The English media is just as brutal (as a generalisation) but without the justification of ethnicity.
And I'll take our current lineup over Koivu, Kovalev & Komi, no problem.
.
MAB, Metropolit, Moen. All three have 2 more goals than Kovalev this season.

I can't stand Brier's goal celebration. Talk about cockyness. So glad we had the last laugh. How sweet it is Brier, how sweet it is.
What do you guys think about the Souray rumors? I don't see how he can fit in our salary cap....
"The NHL was going to test the Stanley Cup for lysteria, but then they realized it hasn't touch a Maple Leaf product in over 42 years!"
Sheldon will never wear tricolore again....he was what -29 when he left? PP? fine...even strentgh? MAB is our man for the money

We already have a Sheldon Souray, only he's scoring more with a better +/- and he's being paid 7.2 times less. I'm talking about Bergeron in case anyone didn't get it.

Souray scares me less than Bergeron. He is also bigger and tougher and he can skate backwards, Bergeron can't.
as well we have weber on the farm who may fill that role in the next year or so.
December 4, 2009 - Elmer Lach's jersey took its rightful place with the Rocket's in the rafters.
Weber's massive regression this season worries me a little bit. He needs to get his act together.

I liked Sheldon when he was a hab and I watched him as an Oiler a lot. He is a leader in the room and stands up for his team mates. He seems to be getting better defensively over the last season or so. The knock I have concerns his injuries. He missed almost 60games his first year in Edmonton and was on the shelf every second season in Montreal for surgeries. He missed 15 games or so earlier this season with a concussion. I would love to have Souray back but not at his 5M or so per. I just don't see the cap numbers line up as we would need to send a heck of a lot of salary back. Edmonton has a lot of younger cheaper D on the backend that I would consider over Souray.

Habs already have a sufficient number of pylons on defence.

I agree, the only way i'd take souray back was if edmonton ate 85% of his salary, and only wanted a player like Laraque, Wyman and a low draft pick. Giving up the Kosty bros like the rumors are stated to, I feel that is a very steep price!! The only salary trade that makes sense to me is Souray for Gionta. Which I'd rather have Gionta back when healthy.
"The NHL was going to test the Stanley Cup for lysteria, but then they realized it hasn't touch a Maple Leaf product in over 42 years!"
Yeah, I agree. It's not just the cap issues, he's also brittle and on the wrong side of 30...and, heck, who needs Souray when you've got MAB! Congrats on the icon btw, from a Tux n00b
This is the first I hear of it, guess I've been busy. But I think we had him at his best and he is very injury prone, besides now we have MAB:)
I said it before and I will say it again..We don't need him..Loved him when he was here, but we have enough old/slow/injury prone d-man with inflated contracts...MAB can do the job just as well as Shelly on the PP..
It seems to me our PK has been doing well the last few games. Currently we are 12th at 81.8% but I'm sure there has been a steady improvement. Our PP is still a woeful 16.8% 25th in the league.
btw congrats to BGL who earned his 100th career point.

100th career assist i think

asked strombo a question once about predictions for last season which he answered on a Q and A thing at CBC. I don't know if it was a jinx but the season did not go as either George nor myself predicted.

stop asking george questions! lmao

Strombo is a BIG Habs fan. Did you see him at the ceremony on Friday?

yep i knew that and i did see him there...very cool...i saw him interview bower last year i think and bower snuck in his office and trashed his hab jersey...too funny
“Talent is a gift from God, but you only succeed with hard work. Yvan was proof of that.” Jean Beliveau
from the numbers game on the Canadien home page
4 – Number of times in Canadiens history that two teams have combined for just five shots in a single period in a Habs game. The last five-shot frame came on March 25, 1993 against the Boston Bruins.
hmmmm ---- could it be ----- lots of similarities with 1993 and this year ..... just one more of those "things"
One shot in the first period was very distasteful. I do not think I have ever seen a one shot period before.
Two big points and we didn't have to give one to them. We are inching closer to respectability every game. This is going to be the month that will separate the better teams from the pack.
Going to Ottawa tomorrow morning and meeting up with a bunch from this HIO site at a local watering hole. Then off to the game. Another two points will look very nice in the standings.
Actually, the Habs only had 1 shot in the 3rd period against Buffalo on Oct 3. We won that one too.
good luck and have fun in Kanata Ian.
December 4, 2009 - Elmer Lach's jersey took its rightful place with the Rocket's in the rafters.
Great game! And about Hal Gill - maybe that injury was hurting him more than we knew... Whatever the reason, he's played well since his return and has been a real asset. Nice shot at the empty net - almost hit it from downtown.
WELLLLLLLLLLL DOGGIES!
Anyone else notice that the time left on Laraque's suspension was never really mentioned? I know I didn't care when he came back, apparently neither did anyone else.
He is not a deciding factor that's for sure. But Hey he did get an assist! ( after the amazing play by Lapps and Cammi)
BGL was the man who won the battle and the puck and made the pass to Laps. he also made a huge statement avec Cote early and that did set the tone that we weren't gonna take any crap.
“Talent is a gift from God, but you only succeed with hard work. Yvan was proof of that.” Jean Beliveau
actually I think George lost that one.
I think you've been corrected by those of us that actually saw it
“Talent is a gift from God, but you only succeed with hard work. Yvan was proof of that.” Jean Beliveau
Cote scored a takedown, but he was desperate to do it because Georges was beating the tar out of his face.

The other guy managed to get Georgie on the ground, but not before getting many of BGLS fists directly in his face
??......what.....??.....He played last game also......
Yes, but I thought of that now.
Great game I thought. Nice to see them get back into after that silly goal by Briere. 3 Habs all over him and he manages a weak shot through the pipes.
Very nice goals by the Habs, very good stuff. That assist by Lapps was terrific!
Thought the Habs sat back too much after the 3rd goal. Was this planned?
I wooldn't call it a weak shot. He placed the shot there. I just think Price overplayed him there.
I whish one of the other 3 would have played him a bit more.
But we won in the end so I'm happy!
That too, or when OB drew the penalty, he should of made sure he didn't get a qaulity shot

If Mara is out for a good chunk of time, will Carle be called up? Would be nice to have another right handed D in the lineup.
if Mara is out for a good chunk of time, we get a whole lot better, what ever happens.
weren't there a bunch of Gill haters saying similar things when he went down? Hal sure has looked better the last two games.
December 4, 2009 - Elmer Lach's jersey took its rightful place with the Rocket's in the rafters.
Heck, they started playing better as soon as he was off the ice. That must mean something.
My guess is that they will just move MAB back to the point and put Pyatt on the fourth line. But I wouldn't mind having Carle back up. I thought he showed great poise for a young player during his brief stint
From the Gomer Nation to the Gomophobes: let's agree on giving Bob Gainey credit for his creditable moves.
Lots more (handling O'B & SK right, for instance), but I think we'll all agree that this above is a lot of credit for a GM.
"Can't we just all get along??!!"
Forgot about Gionta, Only thing, i wish we could do, and i know im dreaming, was prepare to get a guy like Kovalchuk, you get a guy like that, and PRICE becomes a superstar goalie, then you would not have to pay big for a player like Cammi, they will want to flow in here and win, then you have somehting to build with.
“Well, he’s a thoroughbred, and maybe your wife doesn’t recognize that, but then again, I can’t bake bread all that well. We all have different skills.” ...Bob Gainey "Classic"
Agree with all posts except for the Price one. I still beleive we should roll both goalies. The only time we need a No.1 is during the playoffs. # straight jennings with Roy and Hayward played almosr as many games each
disagree. if you have a guy like price, you don't roll two goalies.
What do you call Roy then, when he shared duties for his first 4 or 5 seasons.?
I hope Price becomes what most of us want from him, but he's not there yet.
He could have handled it, but we'll never know.
They call me Shane
His play over the last month has been nothing short of spectacular. As long as the rest of the team can pot a couple of goals, he always give us a chance. To deny this is nothing other than blind hate.
Ridiculous.
He shared duty his second year and never again.

You may be right, but that doesn't change how Price has been playing recently. And based on Jaro's last couple of starts, it would be crazy to play him as much as Price. I agree that Price shouldn't be playing nine in a row, but Jaro should't see more than every fifth or sixth game. Price can easily play the rest, and gives the team a much better chance at victory.
Another crazy way of looking at it is this.
The Canadiens can't afford to give both goalies big contracts, you keep Halak's numbers down and his salary will be the same. If we had two great goalies then one would have to go, and it won't be Mr Price....most likely the best drafted Canadiens goalie since Patrick! hehe

I really don't think Gomer is that Bad, just stop thinking about the money. Wait till Gio comes back, then JM will have the option to put that line togethor when needed. Gomez works in that situation, that's been proven earlier this season.
Absolutely! With the AK46-Pleks-Cammy line putting up big points, having Gionta-Gomez-Whoever will give us two very good scoring lines!
AGREED!
Let there be Peace throughout the Land! And mead in every cup! Whatever mead is!
I agree, these are all great signings... well one I'm still not sure of (I don't want to say who but it's the last one). But I was impressed when Bob landed Hamrlik, and equally so when he brought in Spacek. When Markov comes back we're going to ahve a VERY strong D unit. Now if we could only get TWO lines rolling up front..... Dang! There goes peace again!
