Price to start, Spacek to play

posted by Pat Hickey at 12h56 EST on Dec 10

Jaroslav Halak may have been spectacular Tuesday night when he made 45 saves in the Canadiens' 4-1 win over Ottawa but Carey Price gets the start tonight against the Penguins.

And a bit of good news on the injury front: defenceman Jaroslav Spacek will play tonight. He left the Ottawa game in the first period after a shot hit him in the right knee.

you are right on buddy i am getting sick the ref every game is same  our pk got to be good we are always on pk e last time the leafs won the cup it was still just a bowl!!

HabsMitch's picture

I love the team this year. Tons of character.

So the NHL is going to Fine the Habs for using a ineligible player and I say no problem a rule is rule. Now while the NHL seems to be on the ball, not letting this slip by how about your Habs HATING REFS. Why isn't the NHL wondering why every GD game the Habs are on the short end of the penalties. The Flyers and Sens got away with murder and the Leafs last night no probem two nice fat powerplays in the frist period for them. The reason the Habs are number one in PK lately is because they get so much practise. You really have to give the guys a pat on the back because they are being put in the hole game after game. Its time the Molsons stand up quietly behind close doors and say no more. The fans going to the game now need to stand up for the team by bring signs. The refs need to be called out and the fans do it with booing but now it time to protest with signs. Its time for a movement to stand up to that idoit Bettman and his hatred against the Habs. No way does Bettman ever want the Habs to win another cup he only wants a U.S. team to win. If the Montreal Canadiens and their 100 years of history was losing 25 to 50 mil a year and a American interest wanted to buy and move them to the States they be gone in a heart beat. My proof Winnipeg and Quebec . Anyone going to the game tonight bring a sign asking the refs to treat our team fairly and for the Molsons to stand up for their fans and players. GO HABS GO

Ridiculous conspiracy adherent. Didn't you see that great skate-pass from the ref to Plecky on last Cammy goal?

Sometimes you eat the bar; sometimes it eats you, mate. Crying serves no purpose except to expose weakness. Shan't put up with it.

Sticking your tail between your legs and running and hiding from the big guys seems to be your answer. A coward like you will always stand up for the boss. I base my comments on proof and if you took the time to look at the stats it clear this team is treated differently by the refs. now you be a good little Bettman boy and go sit in the corner with your thumb stuck in your mouth. Real men stand up when the line is draw and cowards like you would rather just bend over and take it.

Bugs's picture
Sorry, what's your "proof" that the refs hate the Habs? That due to the inferior dollar and higher taxes at the time, NHL teams in Winnipeg and Quebec were no longer economically tenable? (whereas they could be now) THAT'S your "proof" that a league-wide referee agenda to sabotage the Habs has long been fomented???

Sorry, Nova. Epic fail.

But please carry on spewing at me. Your character amuses me more than your reasoning.

LOL Bugs, your problem is that you don't take yourself nearly as seriously as novahab does.  Now go to your room and think about how you might make amends to the dear boy.  If you can't see that there is a referee conspiracy going on here, you need to give your head a shake.  The truth hurts Bugs. ;-)

Well as they say the truth hurts but I call it like I see it. I rather us fans stick togher but if I make a comment and the repy is I am crying then that person should be willing to except a repy back. I you don't agree then states some facts why you don't instead of calling names. I respect all posters if they stick to facts. The facts in this case clearly shows game after game the Habs are getting the staft by the refs. I don't want to call out the refs I rather enjoy the game but really this isgetting way out of hand and the Molsons need to address this. If not the fans then need to stand up.

Novahab... your credibility is sagging like a thong full of bowling balls. You're coming upside of Bugs (the coward stuff is really out of line) and you have nothing. The bad calls even out over the year. Sorry, there's nothing to this.

Maybe I should explain the facts of refing to you. First the refs are not out to get the Habs and second they really don't care about the Habs. The truth is the Montreal Canadiens mangement will never complain so it easy just to call the Habs penalties and just the outrgaeous ones on the other teams. Its not the calls they make on the Habs its the no calls they don't make on the other team. Why because they really don't care because they will never be called out on it. Why the hell do you think baseball managers complain and basketball coaches and most hockey coaches. Its how you keep the refs in the game and on their toes. There was no one better at it in hockey than Scotty Bowman and if he didn't do it I doubt the Habs would have won four in a row. This is the reason the team never gets more powerplays than the teams they play. This is why the players can't complain or the coach. Its better if it comes from the top from the Molsons. Either way someone going to have to step up and the fans have with the booing but its time now to bring the signs. If someone doesn't step up this team will be in the box more than the other team all season. As the saying goes nice guys finsh last.

Hayward4Price's picture

9/11 was an inside job too didn't you know? :)

I gotta side with the little Bugger on this one Nova.  If we are getting penalties it's because the team is drained and they stop skating and use their sticks.  It's not like refs are making phantom calls.  Besides perhaps it's the way the pendulum swings sometimes.  Ask opponents of past (like Don Cherry's Bruins) if they felt the reffing was fair when they played the habs of old.  Sometimes you get the breaks sometimes you don't.

I saw the game and it was also on the 11pm news highlights

the part on the bench i 'obviously invented' lol

but, he was quite messed up. i wouldn't be surprised if he's concussed. He looked like a whirling dervish when he got up. and it took some effort to do that. he had that glazed over look.

he went in behind the goal and glanced back and saw the guy coming in and turn to the glass at the last split second, as if he thought he might draw a penalty because he knew he was gonna get pasted. what a rat

And once again the game is on the NHL network in the states, which means its blacked out by my NHL GameCenter package. Because I have to pay the same people twice to watch all the games.

$150 dollars to watch every Habs game in sparkling HD! (except the 12 or so that we show on our other network, which you have to pay us more for).

I feel like one of those movie characters who signed a contract without reading the extra 30 pages of fine print and accidently sold myself into servitude.

Thank god for atdhe.net

Fred D's picture

My cable company does not and will not carry the NHL Network even as a pay channel. When I get blacked out, which is often on Gamecenter Live, I have no alternative but to use Hockey Streams. It is very frustrating. I emailed the NHL people with an expanation of my predicament and asked them to review their policy, since they seem to be able to know where I live by my zip code etc and they know I can't get the game and should therefore allow it on Gamecenter Live. They never answered. I am frustrated with them, to put it mildly.

What about the NHL Network?

joeybarrie's picture

How awesome would it be to get RDS... I have Direct TV I have a few options for the game tonight. Check around, you might get lucky. I have some obscure networks like Madison square garden, and a few others I dont understand, but I get alot of channels. Center ice isnt showing it. Hope you can get it.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey...

jmsheehy19's picture

It would give me a reason to actually pay for a dish/cable service. My parents get the NHL Network, and honestly I'm considering just driving home to watch the game. They only live an hour away and I've already had to do it for the last toronto game.

good for you man for getting your money's worth. I will definitely try that if I go back to Center Ice. But sadly I don't have cable/dish in my new apartment and so GameCenter was my only option. I don't know why I even posted honestly, I just get really annoyed when I feel like I'm being ripped off. Especially since my money is really tight (the reason I don't have cable or Dish is because I chose GameCenter and tickets for when the Habs come to Atlanta over TV)

soflohabsfan's picture

I am happy with center ice the only games that get blacked out are the ones vs the panthers so its like 4 games a year not that bad.

any news on Pouliot?  I am so anxious to see that guy and what he can bring to our team.

With any luck, Sameer, he will mature this year and next, and be able to make a solid contribution.

Thanks vaya..well I am also very eager to see what he has to offer..but perhaps he will show more desperation to score knowing that Latender has already scored 2-3 times in MN...and I am sure here he will eventually get a chance to play with better players and be that big center we have always wanted...:-)

What does everyone think of throwing the Pleks line out head-to-head with Sid?  We are at home so we get the match up we want...if I remember correctly Laps was pretty good against Sid last year as a checker, but he's hardly having the season he did last year.  Option B could be the Metro line who have been great.  Or we could match salaries and have our 8 million dollar man skate against theirs...

Also, I chipped my tooth on Thursday night before this winning streak started.  I'm getting it fixed this afternoon....is that a bad idea?  Should I leave it for the rest of the season?

Harani's picture

My take on the Halak/Price debate is that the Habs are lucky to have a really good back-up and thats's something other teams don't have the privilege in their roster. For instance let's look at the goaltender situation in Anaheim. Jonas Hiller was the clear starter after his superhuman performance in the playoffs. J.-S. is equally a capablee No.1 goaltender but his age might be getting up to him and he needs to fight to stay alive. If you look at the duo of the Habs an this duo, there is a similarity

Jonas Hiller : 19GP  7-9-2 with .906 SV% and 3.13 GAA

J.-S. Giguere: 12GP 4-4-4 with .913 SV% and 2.64 GAA

Carey Price: 22GP  9-10-2 with .913 SV% and 2.69 GAA

Jaroslav Halak: 11GP 6-4-0 with .907SV% and 2.13 GAA

However, any given day when your back-up plays, it's either beecause your No.1 is injured or he needs to rest or becasue he's having a tough time stopping the pucks. In those situations, the back-up is called upon to do his best and if it's not a win, it's not that big of a deal. The problm arise in Montreal because Jaro not only gets wins but plays well when he does. I feel that that is why there is a hesitation and budding controversy. If eveytime Halak subbed for Price and he lost or was mediocre, none of this would happen. We have two good goaltenders. Period.

SLONCOLD's picture

halak will be gone at the end of the season habs can't keep him cause he'll be up for a nice raise form the 750k a year he makes now ( also i would think a few teams might submit offer sheets for him if he is still a RFA beacuse they wouldn't have to give up 2 many draft picks if they offer 1.35-2.25M a year). He also will probably want a chance to start somewhere too.

You should know that last few years giguere has been very inconsistent and during that time hiller was given a chance to take the #1 job. The thing in montreal is halak will never be given that chance for the #1 job regardless of his play; maybe halak will get more starts if price is slupping but only eventually to go back to Price (as has been the case)

Price_31's picture
Nice post! I have nothing against Jaro- he's an excelltent goalie and I've supported him a lot...but I'm SOO TEAM PRICEY! He IS THE FRANCHISE and he's a very bright spot on this team. Halaks performance shouldn't start another debate because I think we all know Price is The Franchise!

PrairieHabber's picture

Showing my age but I remember Patrick Roy with Doug Soetaert then Brian Hayward in his first 3-4 seasons with the Habs.  Halak doesn't fit the same criteria because those goalies were more experienced but they provided a cushion while allowing Roy to become more consistent.  For Roy's first 6 seasons he played 45-54 games.  I don't expect Price will be held back as long but considering the HOF Roy took till his 7th season to play over 60 games, I think it says something about having a competent back-up while your franchise goalie matures.  Having said all that, I expect Halak will be someone else's number 1 guy next year.  He's too young and too good to be held back indefinitely.

t1tan5's picture

Halak's GAA is 2.80 according to ESPN.

AndyF's picture

Is it just me, or is Spacek really a bad d-man? Every time I look at his play (passing, body position, point shot, ... ) he disappoints me. Has he even hit the opposing net once with a slapshot this year?

I also feel he likes taking the long way around, and making the more dangerous of two plays, sometimes needlessly so.

Anyone else think this?

AndyF's picture

Ok, it was just an impression I had. I clearly feel outnumbered in my opinion, however. Thanks for the feedback... even the cheap shots were deserved, I guess. :-)

Ghosts of the Forum's picture

That game he and Hamrlik played against Ovechkin sold it for me.  I am worried that  all the extra ice time the two have received in the absence of Markov combined with playing in the Olympics, they won't have anything left for the end of the season and the playoffs...

That's right, I said the playoffs!!

I think he has been extremely overworked and expected to fill roles that do not play to his strengths at his age....he has been thrust into being our top pairing guy and he is ideally a second pairing guy at this stage but I love what he brings...his game agaisnt Ovechkin fully demonstrated to me his ability...he has missed the net waay too much and at times has appeared sloppy but I think that may be a result of his expanded role personally.  He has by no means been ba d or anything close to it but he hasn't lived up to his offensive billing yet but then again he hasn't an opportunity to. If you look at him like a second pairing guy it gets much better...we did slightly overpay there too but again that is the cost of bringing guys to Montreal....

"Spacek opened the scoring 8:30 in and Boston, which hadn’t lost in regulation in seven games (6-0-1), was unable to tie it during a 5-on-3 advantage for a full 2 minutes after Spacek and Maxim Lapierre(notes) were both penalized for roughing 5:34 into the second."

slapshot, goal. and first goal to boot. it kinda helped the MO

crabvader's picture

He and Hamrlik have easily been our best d-men. Gorges is great aswell but as for pairings, the Hamr and Spatch one has been the best bar-none. He's a +6 so he can't be that bad, right?

Ayan_SB's picture

Yeah F. that guy!! Patrick Traverse>>>>Jaroslav Spacek.

But seriously "Whatchu talking about Willis!?"

Howie55's picture

For a 35 year old Dman, logging around 28 minutes a game on a regular basis, he's doin a hell of a job. He has hit the net with his slapshot numerous times, 53 times actually this year with 3 goals, dummy.

Don't knock his play, him and Hamrlik have saved our asses big time this season in the absence of markov.

Rob's picture

not gonna say it's ONLY you....but pretty sure you're in the minority.  I concede that he is not an EXCEPTIONAL d-man, and really should be a 3-4 pairing player, rather than a 1-2 pairing.  However, injuries have required he take on more ice time, and he has filled in admirably.... all factors considered

budachris's picture

I have been reading this site since the start of last year but i just now decided to join. so here are a couple of thoughts on the 09-10 canadiens.

for all the grieve Bob gainey gets in this city ( some deserving) I don't think he is given enough credit for the job he has done this year. Yes the Gomez cap hit may very well hurt in the long run, but it has been often said that gomez being in mtl was a HUGE reason cammy signed and we all no gionta would never had come if it was not for #91. And i completley understand that plecks is a ufa at the end of the year,( and halak and price are rfas that need to be locked up long term) Assuming that mara, Mab and metro walk plus the expiring contratcs of pleks, price and halak) we will have a little over 9 mill to sign the 3 of them. lets say the cap for price and plecks is an identical 4mil that leaves a little over 1 mil to sign halak. once you factor in the rest of the rfa witch wont be much of a bump and assuming that a combo of p.k, webber and carle will be there in 2010-2011 you have a cap hit 56 and change assuming that the nhl keeps the cap at 58 we have 2 mill in insurance.

I know its all speculative but what i was getting at is the gomez factor may be a bit overhyped, that maybe just maybe this is team is not screwed royally for the next 5 years.

sorry if i put anyone to sleep or thanks if anyone read it...i will keep my posts much shorter

I wish Gainey had spent that Gomez money on Gaborik.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

Ghosts of the Forum's picture

good post.  At the end of the day,  like it or not we have Gomez and his contract.  Every time a trade is mentioned on here, his name comes up.  No one is going to take on that contract.  So we may as well make the best of it, accept him for the player he is (a solid second line centre and great on the PK) and all move on...

HardHabits's picture

It's so much fun watching posters twist and turn over the "contract" though.

Ghosts of the Forum's picture

haha....good point. If it wasn't for Gomez I'd say there would be about half as many posts on here.

And think, if Gainey consistently made great moves and we won the Cup every year, we wouldn't be able to gripe about how we could run the team better (and as much as we joke about it, secretly most of us probably think we could) and then, what would be the point in being a fan??

Ayan_SB's picture

Supposedly Goligoski will end up playing tonight.

Harani's picture

I find that whenver we played the Pens, the guys just looked around waiting for soething to happen instead of taking it to them. They were admiring the passes an plays and most of the goals were scored on beautiful passing plays. I have both Crosby (it was on autodraft, if I were there I would have picked Getzlaf!) and Staal in my pool and I won't be playing them. Just a superstition I have of benching guys who are playing the Habs. Usually they get nothing because the other team's fourthl line which gives fits to the Habs (Mike Rupp, Matt Cooke (!)). Expecting a strong game from every from start to finish. And I guarantee you that the Pens won't go 0-for-7 on PP opportunities. Discipline and smart hockey on the menu tonight.

Getzlaf over crosby????  Man i wish i were in your pool id trade you Getzlaf for Crosby Right now.

Jordio-oh's picture

It's admirable that you bench Crosby when he plays the Habs in your hockey pool. But its a tad foolish since he has 11 goals, 13 assists in 16 games vs our boys.

I only say this because I'm more dedicated to my own hockey pool than i should be.
