Markov could play Saturday: Stubbs

posted by Kevin Mio at 11h54 EST on Dec 18

RDS reported Friday morning that it has learned Andrei Markov will make a return to the Canadiens lineup sometime next week. But our Dave Stubbs reports via Twitter that Markov hopes to play on Saturday in Long Island and the final decision will be up to head coach Jacques Martin. If Markov had any say, he would be on the ice Saturday.

In other news, Tom Pyatt and Yannick Weber were returned to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday morning.

More to come.

I think Gomez would never have thought that he'll be playing with D'Agostini and Moen on a line when he was traded to Montreal.  Not even Crosby nor Malkin can produce with those two!

I'll be at the Coliseum to see my boy come back.  I hope Stubbs is correct in his proclaimation of Marky's return.  Maybe now the place with have hundreds of fans, instead of tens of fans.

THIS IS SO SICK!!!

Wasn't last night the last one of the month?

Last night was the last home game of 2009, they have 7 road games left this month/year.

WILL WE MAKE THE PLAYOFFS?

Consider this.... even with Markov and Gionta (and Hamrlik??) back, can we win TWO-THIRDS our games?  That's about what we'll need to make the playoffs. And that's at the level of the elite 5-6 teams in the league. Which may come down to:

1. Will Gio not only pot more goals but help to spark Gomer and SK?

2. Will the D be that much better with Markov back that it will be a difference maker?

3. Can/will Price be more consistant and not give up so many bad goals?  The kid has stolen some games but his weakness is the softies he gives up.   (My view... since last year... he needs to site every couple of games... but no-one seems to listen to that so I'm guessing things won't change.)

4. Can our first line keep up its scoring pace?

5. Will we be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline?  Will we make the playoffs?  Place your bets today - we'll see who's right later.

SD - After reading your claim that 2/3 of the remaining games was necessary to qualify for the playoffs I was a bit skeptical, but after further anaylsis, I quantified that this in the only scenario where the habs have a chance of making it.  Based on prior years' standings, 95 pts is a good threshold for making the elite 8.  That's means we need to acquire 62 more points in the remaining 46 games, yeilding a 28-12-6 record, where the OTL may vary, but will have a negligible impact on the totals.  Wow, possible but not probable.

1.  Yes, pot more, and yes spark SK74 and Gomer.

2.  Yes, ten fold.

3.  If Price remains in net for 75% or more of our games, we are doomed, period, like it or not Halak is the key to our playoff push, circa 2009.  Not to mention his efforts in the 06-07 season.

4.  I believe so, if secondary scoring contributes upon the returns of Benny and Gio.

5.  Neither.  It's difficult to pin a label on this team at any capacity.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MARKOV'S NAME TO BE ANNOUNCED SATURDAY AT THE COLISEUM

Eastern conference right now:

14th place: 31points

5th place: 39 points

This is with between 48 and 51 games to play for each team. No need to catch the "elite." Just making the playoffs after all the injuries and coaching miscues will be something of a miracle.

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

3. No. His focus is a real problem. Since the Halak rumour exploded the other day, he's been a model of non-chalance and complacency.

4. Yes, but not on the road until Gionta gets back.

5. Neither. If the Habs make it, they will be at best 7th or 8th.

You're probably right about #5.  In previous years I think if it was touch-and-go, Bob became a buyer... which to me is a mistake.  Why buy (at a premuim) for a play-off you may not make.   I'd rather he gamble and be a seller if he's going to gamble... in other words... gamble on NEXT year's team.

Laraque gets to play, but Pyatt is sent down. Is there some reason he can't be a healthy scratch? Cap issues?

how long has it been that a call u[p from hamilton actually helped the team or provided a spark?

since ak74 came a couple of years ago with some moxy, not a single call up has really helped.

in fact, they have sucked.

i will be very happy when this team is fully healthy, if only to see some pros on the ice.

I know OB changed numbers but Andrei too?

Oh, please, please, please don't let him return for the Dec. 26 game against the Leafs - I was at the game where he sustained his injury and will also be at this game- the hockey gods are not smiling upon us right now.

Oh no! Mail me your tickets, I'll go instead and save us all!

please stop going to Habs games.

Come to think of it, I was at this season's "Markov Injury Game", as well as the one at the end of last season. I'm starting to see a pattern...

right... i'm still thinking early Jan or jan 15th

didn't rds say he would be back this week... plus if i were the habs i would get him some action in hamilton first so he can get in game shape and test it in a league that is less physcial

G-Man's picture

You don't send Markov to the minors to "get in shape." He is an elite performer who will be ready to play when called upon.

SLONCOLD's picture

uhm it's not a punishment. BUt as an elite player he will be targeted and hit hard in his first game back in the nhl, it's more to protect your elite player

I was so excited about Markov coming back......

then Peterstone said it wouldn't matter. I guess Markov's return is irrelevent. Maybe he should take the year off.

Cause Peterstone knows everything.

Please don't return against the Leafs.  He'll suffer a spinal cord injury at the rate he gets injured against them.

XMAS MIRACLE.

If this were a 5 game win streak instead of the opposite I wonder if it would be next week? Assume so and great to have him back.

meh....i'd rather taylor hall/tyler seguin.

ManApart's picture

Forget Seguin, didn't he get cut from the Juniors? It's Taylor Hall the whole way. Finishing 2nd last overall is not a stretch, actually it's almost probable. It's finishing last, behind the Canes that will be tough. I know about the lottery, but A last overall never lost it's 1st pick before, so we need to finish last. I have faith in the guys to go all the way!

RGM's picture

That is not true. A couple years ago Philly finished 30th but Chicago ended up winning the lottery and selecting the guy that Carey Price stopped 3 times in the shootout.
