Gionta skates alone; more to come

posted by Dave Stubbs at 11h01 EST on Dec 18

Rehabbing Brian Gionta skated with Canadiens head athletic therapist Graham Rynbend for at least a half-hour in Brossard this morning before the team's scheduled 11:30 a.m. practice.

More to come from Brossard this morning, including updates on his health and that of Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik.

The Grey Cup is in the building, by the way, here for a photo op with fans and members of the Alouettes, who are expected to join their championship trophy.

I'll be updating practice more briskly on Twitter. Find me here.

Help.!!---I have tried to join twitter twice now, but it won't accept my E-mail or my name. Says it has been taken. Whats up with this .??? Mr. Tubbs, I mean Mr. Stubbs.

SeriousFan09's picture

Gionta's back to skating, excellent. With his return, we can get secondary scoring going again, I miss that 5'7" dynamo on the ice.

Assuming Hamrlik is healthy, d-pairs?:

Gill-MAB

O'Byrne needs some pressbox time.  He's taking too many stupid penalties.

As tempting as a first-line paring would be, I'd hold Markov to 15-18 minutes in his first game back.

likehoy's picture

meh, to be honest gorges is not having a great season...he's getting beat down low way too often and it seems as if the puck always skips over his stick.

Bryan's picture

Oh right... forgot about him:

Good point raised above about Markov's icetime in his first game back though.

I'd definitely be in favour of putting MAB on the 4th line with Pyatt and whoever JM decides to put with them (no BGL please!)

Put Gorges on the 3rd pairing with Gill!

With Pyatt down again MAB is a 4th liner...

Hey word to wise folks, don't ever order from Sports Obsesssion. Seriously. Let's review -

-5 weeks to get a jersey. No tracking email, no news other than "oh another week or so" or "any day now" when you call.
-Jersey has wrong number, forced to wait for a replacement and had to return it to the store
-CC charged, despite error
-Had to call AGAIN to confirm, as the first guy didn't properly make the order (luckily I did)
-3 weeks, probably coming up on 4 I think
-Only news again is "any day now"

Seriously? Just give me my damn money back at this point.

jennifer1984's picture

that sounds like my last year.

My dad was getting me a Higgins jersey for Christmas (my  number is 21) and the guy said it would be in.

Then when it wasnt there for Christmas, my dad was upset. I guess he told my sister how upset he was and how he wanted to see the look on my face so bad. So he put a picture in "to hold me over" But it was just a picture of Higgins! haha

Then a guy I bowl with (or used to, and that makes me sound so cool! haha) loved the Habs as well and knew I wanted a Higgins jersey.... Comes up to me on a game night and says "merry late christmas" and it was a freakin Higgins jersey, EXACTLY the same as the one my dad was getting but this one didn't cost my dad $300. He said he had hookups.. thats why he got it for me.

Anyway.. point is.. i was disappointed too. More for my dad because I could wait. But with all the Leafs fans in the house (my step siblings) he wanted me to flaunt it for Christmas. SO this year I have a choice of 3 Habs jerseys. Ill wear one, my sister will wear hers, my dad will wear his and we'll put the damn dog in his Habs shirt. They will be outnumbered!

sorry...that was long. reliving some moments there

avatar_58's picture

Well in the spirit of things - at least my brother's jersey arrived right? Like you I can wait, I'm happy he will be able to unwrap it. :)

However GODDAMN....10 weeks? :(

jennifer1984's picture

hey i dont blame you. 10 weeks is insane. i think my dad went 8 weeks... he told the guy to shove it after. not surprising to me.

i think my dad was excited to give me my first jersey at 24 years old.... especially since ive been cheering for montreal for as long as i can remember.

i loved when my dad would let me stay up and watch the games.

ahh memories

If you want a custom jersey made, print or stitched goto Sports Experts in Fairview mall on the west island.  Stitched jeresys take 7 to 10 business days, no shipping charges, the work is done in house and you pick it up there.

HabsoluteFan's picture

That's too bad man, I hate having to wait to get my merchandise.  I got my jerseys from a shabby site and suprisingly got them in 6 days at a cheap price.  Granted it's not the 300$ ones but everything is stiched on, they have the centennial patch on the shoulder and the fight strap in the back.  Great quality for the money I paid.  Is Sports Obsession a website or a store ?

On december 18th, in the middle of a 5 game losing streak, this guy said the habs would turn it around and make the playoffs.

Chuck's picture

Just out of curiosity, which site did you use?

To be honest with you my patience has pretty much run out with these guys. Almost 10 weeks now. Frankly when they call back I'm going to give them an ultimatum - guaruntee it before christmas or else I want my money back TODAY. Not 2 weeks, TODAY. Thank-you.

:(

likehoy's picture

i liked pyatt...but he has to keep his head up...he has the speed to be a top player in the NHL...but his hands and his drive to get points is not there...he often chooses to dump or take a bad shot when he's out of options but with his speed...he could definitely create more chances.

It's hard to make an impact when you're playing with two invalids every night at roughly 6 minutes a clip.  He was much more productive playing with White.  I was a huge advocate of the White-Gomer-Pyatt line, but that didn't take for so long.

I was really excited about Gionta's return but RetroMikey says all his & Markov's return will do is produce more "offensive numbers" aka more goals.

We all know scoring more goals couldn't possibly help the team, right?

I wish I hadn't read his post. I'm depressed now.

Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

likehoy's picture

it's not the goal scoring that's going to make the difference (although it helps) it's the puck possession game...

gionta and markov adds valuable players that can control the puck in their own zone and in the offensive zone...right now it's clear how much tougher it is for gomez as he lugs the puck up the ice and then he has no option and is forced to dump or into a turnover

gionta would give gomez and obvious player to pass to and gionta is capable to gaining the zone and being a threat.

markov's legendary breakout passes will help the team's transition game...and faster transitions would equate to better puck possession, and ultimately more time with the biscuit will translate to better results

it's as simple as that...now i'm not predicting ultimate puck possession, or a 35 game winning streak...but i'm just saying those kinds of options help the team a lot more than just on the stat sheet.

- let's make it a triple crown: Impacts, Alouettes and now the Canadiens!

Ian Cobb's picture

Correct, puck control and possession is the winning style of game that we have yet to master. So we just continue to lose.

I disgree with the popular sentiment on this site.  I think the organization is in a great position!

  • Price is the franchise goalie!
  • The system is stacked with solid young prospects.
  • For once, we can be major players at the deadline (Gomez, Gionta, Hamrlik, Spacek, Gill, Halak, etc.)
  • We have the assets to package and bring in at least one, maybe two, top caliber players, picks, or prospects.
  • My question is:  Which assets are more appealing?  Koivu, Kovalev, Tanguay or Gomez, Gionta, Hamrlik, Spacek, Gill, Mara, Bergeron, Lapierre, the Kostitsyns, etc?  Please don't tell me that teams want rent-a-players (ie. Tkachuk - ATL; Hossa - PIT & DET)!
  • Gainey is in a great position to make things happen!  In essence, 2010 moves will determine the future of this franchise.  I really believe that this was his plan and I expect some huge moves at the deadline!
  • Don't expect much on the ice this season, the action will take place in the office!

Ian Cobb's picture

We have at least 6 players that will be moved by the trade deadline for first and second round draft picks. And a couple for a bag of pucks.

Timo's picture

Can elaborate of those solid young prospects we are stacked on? I've been hearing this for years now but yet to see any of them being the change agents for this club. They are ok, as pluggers and 3rd/4th liners but that's about it.

Propwash's picture

TROLL!!!!!!!

errm..... sorry, just too used to the negativity here lol. The office stuff, if it were to come to fruition, will be interesting to see.

Stubbs twittered that the Habs are practicing with Tennis balls?! Uh... what? why?

dufour's picture

it works on your passing and recieving. you cant just smack the ball because it will bounce all over the place. You have to slide it. He is definately doing this because the passing has been so bad lately.

One of my old hockey coaches went to St-Lawrence with Jacques and is good friends with him (I got to meet jacques a couple of times and he ran a practise for us before too). when we would have a hard time controlling the puck and making smooth passes we would practice with tennis balls. Jacques Martin preached earlier in the season that he wanted to play a puck possesion game, and that is what this is about.

"How would you like a job where when you made a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?" Jacques Plante

Sheesh... the famous tennis ball practice -- originated by Fred Shero -- has become a cliche for struggling teams everywhere in hockey. Sorry to hear Martin has resorted to this.

TheDagger's picture

They swing their sticks like tennis rackets so might as well give them a tennis ball.

"A month before the season I stop putting ketchup on my french fries." -Mario Lemieux on his off-season training.

Corio's picture

Probably because the balls bounce a ton and so it forces you to practice your recovery and control..

Or maybe to avoid broken feet?  lol

Since when have the NHL.com jerseys been stitched?? I ordered a markov jersey for my brother for xmas - there was a sale on free customization right? It arrives fully stitched not pressed. Huh. Really? Only took less than a week too for shipping.

Lucky SOB. If I'd have known it was stitched I'd have ordered myself one. My goddamn Gionta jersey hasn't even arrived from Sports Obsession after their screwup, yet his comes in like 5 days in perfect quality.

Funny cause a Laff fan here at work saw me and started laughing and said "even if you clowns make it to the playoffs by some sort of luck yer still gonna lose in the first round.  Martin is a garbage coach who will never win a cup.  His system is useless and we (meaning the Laffs) made a mochery of it every year we met them in the Playoffs".

I just had to take it and walk away in shame. The problem now is that I think he was right about Martin.

Habs, OLE !

Couple of reasons why the leafs made a mochery of the Sens each year... first of all, goaltending was the pits, and second, and perhaps more important, lhe leafs just intimadated the heck out of the Sens.. the blue goons were just too much for Ottawa. That changed when Chara, Neil, McGrattan etc... arrived.. That was the end of laff dominance. I actually recall laff fans complaining aboutthe Sens intimidating tactics.  Funny!!

Anyway, its likely a lesson learned by JM. He is going to make sure that we are not in a postion to be intimidated by anyone. BGL has a big role to play there. I wouldn't mind bringing up Neilson once in a while as well when need be.

Markov's return is great news. Once Gionta and Pouliot get to work, it will be like a team 're-born'!  Look out all.

SmartDog's picture

I'll tell you who the Leafs have to thank for pounding the Sens in the playoffs: Lalime.  The most choke-prone goalie ever.  Man, he killed them.  He was almost like a double-agent.

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

avatar_58's picture

Hate to play devil's advocate, but if we have to rely on our goalie come post season we're in deep trouble.

nick's picture

Tell him you'll see him around the old draft table in 2010. Oh... no you won't... TO doesn't have any first round picks. How about 2011? Oh... none their either. Huh.

They'd better do well, they sold out their future in hopes of putting together a decent season.

TheDagger's picture

Wow, your colleague has a good memory if he is able to remember the Leafs in the playoffs.  And don't forget to tell him JM has a slightly better winning percentage.

"A month before the season I stop putting ketchup on my french fries." -Mario Lemieux on his off-season training.

But not this season. We are 2-1 this season...

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey...

avatar_58's picture

Yeah because when I think of great coaches, I think Ron Wilson.

Chuck's picture

Alas, it looks like the Grey Cup is the only one that they'll see this season. When the Alouettes brought the Grey Cup to the Bell Centre, my only thought was, "First Cup to be paraded around here, and it's the wrong damn Cup!"

Lets hope Gionta can come back and help out the scoring ASAP.   While having Markov back with be really really good, I think that this team requires some help on the scoring front more immediately
