• Stubbs column on Markov's return
Andrei Markov will celebrate his birthday weekend by returning to the Canadiens lineup on Long Island tomorrow for the Habs game vs. the New York Islanders.
Markov, who turns 31 on Sunday, was given the green light last night by Habs doctor David Mulder and now it's up to head coach Jacques Martin to determine how much to use his all-star, given the fact he's missed 11 weeks as of tomorrow's game.
Markov looked like a very happy man in the dressing room after today's short but high-spirited practice in Brossard that began with 10 minutes of slapping around tennis balls.
If Roman Hamrlik returns to the lineup tomorrow – he didn't practice in Brossard today – expect Marc-André Bergeron to move up to the fourth line.
Both Yannick Weber and Tom Pyatt were farmed back to Hamilton today.
This Markov Conspiracy greatly interests our Services. For the last couple of weeks, we have been roamng closer and closer to the nub of it all and despite managerial interference and bureaucratic stumbling-blocks, we feel confident that our pending report will not only shed some light on the whole matter but indeed, douse it with the brilliance of a million Alpha Centauri suns. You will be surprised, nay, amazed at what we have discovered. We also feel confident of avoiding any libel charges.
So don't miss the Sunday supplement.

double post
To Jimmyshaker: This is the first time I have ever done this, but your reply to me appalled me so much I am going to re-post it so I can post my reply, as this conversation is currently on the 4th page or so. Anyways:
"You reallly think Martin is going to come out and say "Price is going again because he shat the bed and I'm trying everything I can to get this kid going". No, he's going to say all the right things to the media and dress it up and give us that nice flowery statement. And how does your logic work? "He played all the goals correctly, but one got lucky" How does going down 5 min before the shot came, on top of going down in that civ stance with one leg flat along the ice totally exposing himself playing the goals correctly. You must be new to this thing called hockey. Spend a little time in the AHL before you come up to the big boys. Maybe that league is better suited for your taking"
No, I do not expect him to say that, but I would not expect JM to say (if price had been playing badly recently) something along the lines of "Price has been solid and consistent and we expect the same from him tonight". And honestly, are you THAT unaware as to a goalie's positioning/butterfly techniques? "He went down 5 minutes before the shot" seeing as the shot was the skaters only option and price was tall enough so that at that angle the player couldn't put it over him, he played that correctly. And one leg flat along the ice is what you do!!!! It's so that you can use your upright leg to push yourself over in the case of a cross-crease pass and slide on that one leg down, and at the same time prevent him from going far corner with your stick and pad! No, I am not new to this thing called hockey. I have played hockey for 6 years. I am a ref. I have watched hockey and read about it for the past 5 or 6 years. Maybe you should spend some time in say, junior A,B,C, pewee, midget hockey to watch the goalies and see what they do, and if you're lucky maybe you could watch AHL, let alone NHL. Was that "suited to your taking"?
Go Habs Go!
Could everyone PLEASE STOP the conspiracy theories about Markov's return!?
Seriously, you can't just be happy that Markov returns? So many of you actually have to put a NEGATIVE spin on this too? It's getting to be a talent at some point.
Sometimes people heal faster than the conservative estimates at the beginning of the injury project. With advances in medical science, with advances in rehabilitation, sometimes you get good results. Sometimes you heal faster than was anticipated.
THIS IS GOOD.
Dr. Mulder is a VERY reputable doctor. All of you who are saying that Markov is rushing himself back are questioning his reputation, if you think about it. Mulder cleared him to play so he is medically able to.
If Markov were Canadian and wanted to play for the Canadian Olympic team would his motives be questioned less? I feel like they would be, given the tone of some of these comments. European players are soft. Or they're not. Or they're committed to their country over their team. Or they're not. Should we question Mara for playing against Minnesota because Hamrlik couldn't go or is he just a good team guy?
Markov is frustrated because he wants to play hockey. He's one of the best in the world and hasn't been able to play. He's anxious to do come back and help.
Silly stuff, guys. How about you just enjoy the early Christmas present, a well-needed one for the team.
Unless of course, you just want bad things to happen to the Canadiens, that is. But I guess no one here could ever be accused of that...

GO HABS GO!
Good post Mike. I would also add that the original timeline of four months for Markov's return was based on the average person, not an elite level athlete like Markov. Also this type of injury is not common like a sliced achilles tendon is in hockey. Plus Markov worked VERY hard at his rehab to return as quickly as possible. That is dedication and commitment to the organization and his teammates. Personally, I had no doubt that he would return before February, but I never dreamed that it would be before Christmas. It's the best Christmas present we could all ask for.
I'll second every word!!!! Let's get it goin Markie!!! Welcome Back!!!
Amen to that!
Some of these posts were reallt starting to piss me off.
It's already been stated that the estimate for Markov's return was largley based for a non professional athelte. It was a conservative time line. Imagine if they had said beginning of December but it didn't turn out that way. Then there would be a push to rush him. I find that in most cases the players beat the inital estimate for a long term injury, I'm not surprised.
Have a Merry Cammalleri and a Markov New Year!
Could not agree more, man. Excellent post.
HA HA HA.....u posted my thoughts to a tee......half the peple on here need anti-depressants.....it would do wonders for them!!!
We had up to 23 some odd million dollars on the I.R. over the past 2 months, and now were down to just GIO being out and there still whinning. Markov IS going to make a HUGE difference.....thats why hes the best of the best.....and we got him!!!
Whenever I get depressed about our current standings, I think of 2 things:'
a) The East isn't as good as the West. A solid winstreak (5-6 games) will have us back comfortably in a playoff spot.
b) Look at St. Louis last year. Around Christmas they were well out of a playoff spot, yet they were on fire in the second half of the season, and finished 6th or 7th in the conference. Why not us too?
Not saying either of these scenarios will happen... just sayin' the season ain't done yet. I think we all agree that being 2 games under .500 without Marky all year is probably what was expected of us, if not much better (based on last season's record without him).

Great news about Markov... could just take him a while to get back into it.
I'm not worried.
Heard a rumour (I might be years behind on this) that we're looking to pick up Claude Giroux from the Flyers. Anyone knwo anything about this/him?
---Hope Springs Eternal---
There were rumors that Gainey offered Halak to Philly, but they werent interested
I agree with comments on Markov, originally planned to return in Feb now back before Christmas...hmmmm me thinks Olympics have a lot to do with his speedy return. I just don't like it....smells.
I watched the dogs game last night and for sure Poulliot needs some time in the AHL. While not everyone played last night I hope Bob works on moving Weber as part of a package. I see no future with Habs (too small). Also, other tiny dogs that have no future with a winning Habs team are Trotter, Russell, Desharnais & Johansson. Go big Bob or get out.
We need players who don't get pushed off the puck and are fierce competitors, not spectators. Some of our small players are hopefully moved by trading deadline when the writing is on the wall for this year, although it will take a lot of luck to move any of them.
Something to ponder Habs fans.
What is more important fror European players? An Olympic Gold medal( IIHF World Gold medal every year) or a Stanley Cup for their NHL club?
If there were no Olympics coming up would Markov come back so quickly to help our poor team?
I somehow feel Andrei’s mind is winning a gold for his country with his Russian brothers than to bust his cullions for trying to salvage our poor season for an 8th place spot, if that.
Welcome back Andre, but you know, I know, that 1 individual will not make a difference in winning games with you back in the line up or the mighty hardworking smurf in Gionta which I admire his grit and character..
The season is over, we will be a very beat up and physically drained team heading into the playoff if we make it.
Bobby has alot of decisons to make on who to trade for teams wanting their services.
I just can't see this team performing with consistency from here to the end of the season, even with a healthy lineup.

You crazy, how could a defenceman who has 213 pts in the last 4 years and a plus player 4 out of the last 5 years possibly help this team this win games? (sarcasm). Even having gionta back who was on pace for 35+ goals this season wouldn't help either. Especially with 12 one goal loses, there is no way these guys would have made a difference.(once again, sarcasm)
They'll make a difference. The question is will the difference they make be enough?
good thing gainey signed camm and gion and did get gomez otherwise we would have two offensive forwards plecks who is more of an assist master and ak46...the pyatts, whites, moens, maxpac, dags, lapps can be usefull players on a team but not all on the same team...and we have bgl, maxwell, stewart and many others ..the organization is full of the same type of players grinders/checkers/shut down players ...2 wildcard we have is sk74 and pouliot but the jury is out on them if they can become anything more than 3rd or 4th liners...the d and goaltending is not in issue
Well kinda. More like 1.5 offensive players. You have to have SK on the team to explain to AK what Martin, Muller, Pearn and Groulx are babbling about to actually get the 2 out of last yaers non-free agents. Now if the Habs could find a team that had a great Bel-russian player they didn't want they'd have three. Well, two after Pleks signs his new contract and disappears again.

this is a result oriented business ..gainey gets a very large salary...we can write of this season but there is minimal hope for having a good team next year or the year after...horrific drafting, evaluation and philosophy by the gainey gang...so bob this team will not be a contender even when your your great picks mature into the 8 goals a season talent they have ...i am sure you can draft more non scorers next year..
What is Gaineys salary?

Nice little article, thanks. Like the stats, reminds me of the old NHL where the visitors always only had one assist per goal at best:-)
we are 27th in the nhl with almost every team ahead of us games in hand...sabres 11 points ahead 3 games in hand ...this team will win a few games but because the overall talent level is one of the worst the nhl it will have losing streaks to follow 2-3 wins in a row ...we really over evaluate the talent on this team...very few teams if any would trade their roster for ours...the sad news is that the future for this team is now...there are no collection of young dynamic players that will gel in 2-3 years and make this team a contender,,,
Does anyone know where entire games can be downloaded these days? Center Ice Forums used to be good, but they don't seem to exist anymore. justin.tv and adthe.net are only good for live games. I live in a remote BC town - 1000 folks - and missed the Habs Bruins Dec 4 game. Looking for a good copy, ideally about 700MB to 1GB in size.
Thanks.
Hockeystreams.com is a pay site but they stream all of the games live and they have them all archived. You cannot download them but you can watch them as many times as you want. They have two sometimes three levels of quality.

After spending about $500 on Habs stuff for Christmas gifts I would ask that everyone allow me to remain on the mythical bandwagon.
That said, tomorrow night I'll be watching the NFL for fantasy football rather than the Habs, with or without Markov. I hope he doesn't disappoint but he deserves some time to round back into shape. I'll check in again following a two game win streak. . . regulation preferred.
In the event. . . Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate and, well. . . in the event that that is not long ago, Happy New Year and, hell, Happy Valentine's to boot.
NOOOOO doug, dont give in to the darkness that is fantasy football
If we don't have a two game winning streak by Valentines I won't be watching hockey until October.

Gabriel Dumont is coming off of 2 consecutive games with two goals. He's got 20 on the season. 31gp, 43pts.
Brock Trotter and David Desharnais both had a goal and an assist, beating the Adirondack Phantoms 4-0.
Cedrick Desjardins picked up his 5th shutout of the season. He faced 26 shots on the night.
He has a 9-4-1 record with a STELLAR 1.34 GAA and 0.948 sv%.
Gregory Stewart got himself a goal (something I doubt Laraque could get even in the AHL).
Ben Maxwell also tallied for the 'Dogs.
Impressive night yet again for Cedrick Desjardins. I remember going to watch him (two years ago I think it was) in Pierrefonds for training camp and I thought it was Price or something cause he was stonewalling everyone... Turns out it was Cedrick and I thought to myself he might be good. Who would have thought he'd turn out this good so far?
Brock Trotter has been a favorite of mine since we signed him up. I'm glad to see him producing. I call him the future Plekanec: North American.
David Desharnais continues to shine and now has 18 pts in 15gp with the Bulldogs. 10 of those points are goals.
Now, if some of our farm team's success could rub off onto our big club, that would be great.
The time is now to trade Jaroslav Halak.
The Xmas trading freeze began at midnight.
Nice to know that Montreal has solid goaltending depth through the farm system that is being well developed, Desjardins is becoming quite a success story for an undrafted player, good for him.
Greg Stewart tallying a marker is nice, perhaps more shades of the Stewart I remember seeing in his first call-up several years ago, he had a fair scoring chance on that play and I thought 'hey, maybe he'll be a full-timer later on'. Hopefully he is developing well enough that he can be used as a reliable 4th-line plugger.

On the bright side, it's nice to see a sense of humour being displayed here. Lord knows we all need more than a few chuckles to make it though this morass. I swear, this team threatens to become more frustrating than last season. Oh well...At least they put some effort into games. Last year's sad sack bunch just never really appeared engaged. It's too bad that Markov's first game back is the first of a seven game road trip. It would've be nice for him to get a very warm reception from the Bell Centre his first game back on the ice. I wonder if he fully realizes just how much he was missed?

Last question of the night...
Who would have been your first choice for coach? I would have loved Larry Robinson to take the reigns and second would have been Crawford. Don't like Martin at all, never have. I think it's because of his hair!
No one loves Big Bird more than I, but he could never be a head coach in Montreal. He could not handle the pressure. He had meltdowns in both New Jersey and Los Angeles when he was their head coach. Robinson would be a fantastic assistant coach, but I do believe there remain some unresolved issues between he and the Canadiens organisation. If Gainey could somehow get Robinson to be an assistant coach, I would be elated.
------------------------
”Playing goal is like being shot at.”
--Jacques Plante
Agree with that take, but what were the meltdowns? I only remember him going nuts on how the league has basically banned hitting. He was so pissed one interview about the horrible calls and all the non hitting that remineded him of a woman's league. I also agree about the animosity between he and the habs. Sort of like what Patty went through. Don't understand or know why. I can't see him being an assistant, even though I know he has been in the past...I want his take no shite approach from anyone, the fact he was an icon here, also that he's won as a coach and player and he'll get all the players going or they will be going right to the press box. I bet he could have lit something under Kovy's arce last year. Good take, cheers!
He really lost it in Los Angeles. He went on an extended public rant to the media just before he left coaching about how lazy, spoiled, and indifferent players are today. No doubt Robinson is right, but a head coach has to find a way to motivate the players. Partly it is a generational thing: Big Bird never took a night off, and he expects his players to play with the same heart he did. That's why I love Robinson, but today's players appear to think coaches should stroke their egos. I doubt Robinson would ever do that.
------------------------
”Playing goal is like being shot at.”
--Jacques Plante
Robinson is dead on when he talks about players today being lazy, spoiled and indifferent. Coaches should NOT have to motivate the players because their effin HUMUNGOUS paycheques should. Each and every player on every NHL team should want to win the Cup. Most prima donnas we're watching today want the season to end the 1st week of April so they can party for 4 months. It's also why, as a whole, the level of talent available is so low. Too many teams with big roster holes using stopgap measures to complete their rosters under a cap forced onto them by shitty southern US teams with no revenue.
I agree,i find it so dumb that coaches have to motivate their players to play the game they are being payed big salaries to play.If a player can't come to the rink self-motivated to play, then there is a problem with the player, not the coach. At one point these guys had to be motivated or else they wouldn't be in the nhl in the first place. I guess once you get the nice contracts, the motivation is not as great as when you were trying to crack a nhl roster. Well until its their contract year anyway.
The one, the only.....Scotty Bowman
Robinson would have been my choice as a defensive assistant coach. Wont be long before Patrick Roy is calling the shots.
Based on his experience turning the Ramparts into the Philidelphia Flyers of the QMJHL?
No coaching experience in the AHL or NHL and I think Montreal has exhausted the experiment of choosing head coaches with no professional league experience.
