Monster blizzard might strand Canadiens

Today in Washington, with as much as 60 cm to pound the city. This is why it's called the White House.
Yuri Gripas, Reuters

"Is there bad weather coming?" The Gazette's Canadiens beat writer and resident meteorologist Pat Hickey repeats the question put to him over the phone then roars in laughter.

There's no change in the schedule for tonight's Canadiens-New York Islanders game on Long Island – yet – but stay tuned as a monster storm working its way up the Eastern seaboard is about to pound the area with as much as 45 cm of snow driven by heavy winds. That's almost 18 inches, on the Imperial scale that some of us learned in school.

The storm is expected to hit around midday ET and it's going to be a mess. The Canadiens have made contingency plans to stay overnight if they can't get out to Atlanta immediately after the game, as planned. And that's a distinct possibility, given that the Habs charter is due to fly out of a small, private airfield in Farmingdale, L.I.

Jaroslav Halak will start in goal for Montreal, and defenceman Andrei Markov will return after missing 36 games with lacerated tendons in his left foot. Marc-André Bergeron is to move up onto the fourth line.

About a dozen players skated this morning, including forward Brian Gionta, who wore special foot protection to take part in his first workout with teammates since suffering a broken bone in early November. But he won't play tonight. Nor will defenceman Roman Hamrlik, who didn't skate and remains out with a lower-body injury. Coach Jacques Martin didn't even go to Nassau Coliseum for the session.

Trade Price right F*$@king now!

dre1744's picture

Wow tough  crowd!!!!! Yes Halak played solid tonight as he should have  cause we played the Islanders. But one solid  game  doesn't make him Patrick Roy!!!!!!!!   Remember how  he played against Pittsburge...

I say  ride him until he loses this time  let price sit on the bench it will do him good. If halak wins 4 in a row  that  would be awesome.

lavie's picture

Price is simply a CHILD STAR who has already past his prime time.

slapshot777's picture

What a load of bulls&*t. Why do we constantly bash our goalies. Why cant we be happyfor both to do well and both to win.

CHCanadien's picture

Because the Price is wrong.

sh00n's picture

Yeah, oookay.

habs12345's picture

right now id say give florida gomez and price and for Nathan horton make halak our franchise goalie and call up ben maxwell or pouliot too replace gomez as our secondary center. after thats done sign plekanec who should earn simular money too a david bolland or a david kreichi

That's a start.

slapshot777's picture

One game don't make a starter, but I would play Halak again on Monday.

slapshot777's picture

WOW, just wow how Halak is playing tonight.

Hopefully Price is paying close attention to Halak's performance tonight. Anybody who thinks Price would keep the habs in this game is out to lunch!!

sh00n's picture

Get over it. Price has won us a fair share of games this year and kept us in many more. Both goalies have had off games and both need a break after 4-5 starts. You guys should be embracing that we have two great goalies - not trying to pick between them. It's stupid.

We have 2 good goalies. Price is far from great and if i had to pick one i'd take Halak in a heart beat!

lavie's picture

Key player is the key to play well. Welcome back Markov!

SmartDog's picture

MARKOV - 2

ISLANDERS - 0

Go habs!!!

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

CHCanadien's picture

MAB + BGL = CRAP!

WE ALL KNOW THE HABS HAVE MANY PROBLEMS,  ONOTHER ONE WAS HIGHLIGHTED IN THE FIRST PERIOD WHEN COMEAU TOOK DOWN HALAT, NOT ONE PLAYER WENT AFTER HIM.   ONE CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN A SIMILAR SITUATION IN THE DAYS OF FERGUSON OR NILAN.

ANOTHER PATHETIC  PERIOD FOR GILL, MORE TURNOVERS IN HIS OWN END, MISHANDLING THE PUCK AND FLOUNDERING AROUND LIKE A ELEPHANT

Markov making a difference right away. Great news!!

CHCanadien's picture

Too bad no one other that Markov and Halak have bothered to show up!  The way they're playing now it's going to be up to Halak to steal one.

I agree. They look lost out there. Could this be a coaching problem?? Something just isn't right with this team.

slapshot777's picture

They all bunch together in the middle of their own zone and they can't get to pucks along the boards and they when they do get the puck they can't make a good pass.

Please Go Habs Go.!!!

WestHab's picture

I might as well give this a try.

I'll be in Montreal during the Jan 16 game vs Ottawa.  Anyone interested in selling one or 2 tix?

Have a Merry Cammalleri and a Markov New Year!

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

Scott Cullen (TSN expert analyst) is pathetic.

Players to watch out for this week includes Francois Beauchemin. Can someone slap these gofers and inform them that even Bergeron has more points than that baboon. They have mentioned Stajan as one of the players to pick up for "Fantasy Pools" and I haven't heard anything about Cammalleri or Pleks..

dre1744's picture

its because the habs  play all road  games this  week  and  we all no Cammy  doesn't perform  aswell on the road  as he does at home

habsfansince91's picture

that would be because they never made it to the free agent list and got drafted :p

That pro Leafs cr@p makes me SOOOO MAD! What makes me even madder is when they win! UGH!!

Oh.

Say, doesn't the NHL Rulebook specifically state that any games lost by an act of God are to be marked as Hab victories, since He's on our side?

I'm sure I read that somewhere...

Thanks Nick.

... side bar: The Predators have 13 million in cap room and are missing Jason Arnott and in their last 20 games they are 15-3-2, go figure.

likehoy's picture

there's a reason why barry trotz still coaches in nashville.

- let's make it a triple crown: Impacts, Alouettes and now the Canadiens!

nickster13's picture

why cant we have a coach like him.. instead we go hire either a former player, the best francophone recently fired coach available or a former francophone nhler with no experience. It just baulks me how we cant hire like any other team does for any position in our organization

Meh. It's only snow... frozen water. If Washington want's to get rid of it, simply have all of the politicos in that town talk at the same time.

Sounds like the snow we get in Revelstoke...

I hope they play tonight, it'll do all us Habs fans good to see our boys take home a win.

Headed all the way to Montreal to catch some games the week of March 8th. If anyone wants to sell their tickets that week (for any game) please let me know! :)

daveho29's picture

Heading out of Squamish during the Owelimpycs on a ski trip, Revelstoke/rogers pass is my first stop I hear they have done some nice upgrades opening some nice terain. Whitewater,Red,Fernie(lived thier for 7 years).

Hope they get that kind of snow then:) :)

WestHab's picture

Got a feeling you may get an offer for one free tix.

Revelstoke...eh?

5cm of snow is a disaster in Washington DC. Visiting my uncle there once when that happened. Traffic halted, people putting chains on their tires... we were laughing all the way. The "snow" melted in an hour. This? This could very well be the apocalypse for them.

dudurules's picture

could be worse... like the equipment catches fire

... BTW for Chris Lee fans, he's been located and doing or destroying the Detroit / Dallas game this afternoon.

spoonfullofjelly's picture

MUST win tonight. I believe we're on a 7 game road trip right now, and I think we need to take atleast 10 out of a possible 14 points.

Possibly a good time for Gainey to take the team Tobogganing. They'll probably be good at it since the season has all been down hill!

TommyB's picture

Now who could not laugh at that one?  Good one.  But you know, not such a bad idea, as they would have to collectively learn how to get back to the top of the hill before they all freeze their butts off.

Brian Eliott makes his case for worst goal against of the year as well.

I still think the biggest blunder is probably Brodeur's where it goes off his stick and through the five-hole. Mainly because it was in the Stanley Cup finals.

Washington vs Vancouver was such an upset, albeit it wasn't the most exciting game. I felt bad for Jeff Schultz and Jose Theodore on that one. Too bad they couldn't have called it a "distinct kicking motion" on their own player (this is a joke, don't take me seriously). What a bad break. I hate the Canucks.

LMAO

Mattyleg's picture

Hmm... I don't really get it.

Both teams are IN Long Island.

They're not playing OUTSIDE, so they won't have to push a shovel around between periods.

If they postpone this game because FANS can't make it, then they should, by the same logic, postpone the rest of the season in Phoenix. And perhaps Atlanta.

Don't forget NJ, attendence is down, a winning team but the most boring winning team you'll ever watch, fans should protest by sitting in the seats with their pajamas on and sleeping caps.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

MikeMcLaren's picture

Attendance is down in NJ?

Was it ever UP?

They "protest" by not showing up.  Paid attendance was 12,178 at Wednesday's Devils game.  I was there, they're lucky if they had 2/3 of that actually in the seats.

It's such an apathetic fan base.  While boring hockey isn't the greatest thing in the world, I'll take wins any day.  There are many Southern teams whose fans deserve a team when compared to how much support the spoiled Devils fans show their team.

Tonights game isn't the issue, the problem will be traveling to atlanta tonight while there is a blizzard that wont stop until after 4 am

habsfan reduxit's picture

... let's see now: according to the team story this morning, "... a slew of injuries ... has shelved defencemen Markov, Ryan O’Byrne, Jaroslav Spacek, Hal Gill and Paul Mara, and forwards Glen Metropolit, Brian Gionta and Matt D’Agostini for a total of 118 man-games." And that doesn't even include Roman H. Does anyone know if this is already a team record? ... or a league record? And doesn't this litany of games lost say something - even a little bit - that the league has a problem with injuries?

daveho29's picture

You think we have it bad. I think Edmonton has the most man games lost so far this year.

And then there is Detroit, their injury list looks the an all star game lineup.

likehoy's picture

we've lost something like 500 in 1998

Does anyone know how to post a photo on this blog? Is it at all possible? I made a montage yesterday that some of you might enjoy.

You can't. If you wnat to share you need to post a link to it. Only Boone has the powah to post images.

You need to post the image somewhere on the web, and then link to it here. Like this: me in 1956 (I think) in an odd looking CH sweater -- the blue and red seem reversed.

Does anyone know why PK Subban was a healthy Scratch for the Dogs last night as per the Hamilton Spec?

"I went to see a fight the other night...And A hockey game broke out!" ~Rodney Dangerfield~

B's picture
With Weber sent back they had too many D on the roster (Weber, Henry, St.Denis, Belle, Benoit, Carle and Subban) so Subban was sat as a healthy scratch. I would not read anything into it, they have 3 games in 3 nights and it was simply a roster size related thing. Subban is ok and not in any trouble or anything. I expect him to play tonight in Hartford.

habsperspective's picture

As, I posted early, and will continue to post till the final siren of the season is sound, the habs will not me making the post season this year, unless they win 70% of there points.  Some people have speculated that the playoff bar will be around the 82-85 point area, due to LOG JAMMING(as people as put it), however these points are unfounded mainly cause were not through the first half of the season yet, and some teams will step up, and in the last 7 seasons we havent seen anything under 90 points making the playoffs, not to mention every year since the 3 point games have been introduced we have seen more, and more of those type games, which drives the bar up!!!

Regardless of how weak a certain conference may appear to be, close to 90% of the games are played inter-conference, in other words there will be close to no difference in total accumulated points in each conference...In fact, with such parity regardless of strength of conference, you could see more total points by virtue of more 3 point games.

Heres a link of the showing points from this season, and the past 2, http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/teamseasoncomparison.htm, youll notice we are 15 points behind last years mark...when we stumbled into the playoffs, mind you on a terrible second half, but it still doenst change the fact, that it will take close to mid 90s points to make the postseason, meaning roughly 70% of our 92 points in bank.

This team, currently, does not have that capability, this is not a better core then last years group, even healthy, for just one reason only, Gomez does not have the ability to change the outcome of a game, like Kovalev did.  Period

Happy Holidays

I think the others appreciate your opinion, and nod along to it. They are just saying they get it, you don't have to tell them over and over. They know the score, and don't like having it jammed in their faces because it is the players who can have an effect on the outcome, not them.

adesbarats's picture

We don't mind your argument. Just tired of seeing you post it over and over. Move on, let it go. Don't obsess....it's not healthy....

Mattyleg's picture

Well, there you go.

Now stop watching the games and stop posting.

Thanks.

I can have an opinion, watch games, and still yell at the TV.

Or is it just better to hope, pray, and be ignorant.

Why dont you post an argument instead of a useless comment!
