Update: Markov on C: He'd probably say yes

Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov says he's not been asked about the vacant captaincy of his club, but if he were, he'd probably accept it.

Obviously, this would be a massive life change for Markov, a private man who does his best work a little off the radar. But that he'd consider it shows how much he understands what his leadership means to the Canadiens.

I definitley do not want a Captain who would PROBABLY say yes as Markov has stated.

Either it's a DEFINITE yes or a DEFINITE no to accept the Captaincy.

Merry Orthodox Christmas to all the people who celebrate on this Holy Day!

AWW....are you sad that maxim lapierre isn't going to be captain like you said he should be?

Not as sad as your Roughriders who lost  the Grey Cup to the Alouettes.

In the mean time, HIO has not mentioned that the most recent (and in my opinion, still current) captain just scored his 200th career goal, in a Maurice Richard-type play.

"Just because you are wearing a new Maple Leafs sweater, does not mean you make the rules around here, young man."

Worst thing they could do is give the 'C' to Markov.  They really don't need anything interfering with his play.  Not all great players are great captains, nor should they be.

Give the 'C' to Cammy or Gionta or Hammer.

Go Habs Go

Hi all, I rarely post on this site, I'd just rather sit back and read and post a comment from time to time.

I'm going to be in Prague tonight, so, it would be cool to sit down at a bar and watch the game somewhere. Does anyone know where they'll be televising a game there? I believe there are some people on this site from the Czec Republic, so, it would be great if you could give me a heads up.

Thanx

Some pretty scary stats here. 4 of our D rank in the top 10 for giveaways.

As per TSN.ca

Giveaways
Most
Jaroslav Spacek, D, Montreal - 55
Sidney Crosby, C, Pittsburgh - 52
Tyler Myers, D, Buffalo - 52
Roman Hamrlik, D, Montreal - 51
Chris Phillips, D, Ottawa - 46
Joe Thornton, C, San Jose - 45
Hal Gill, D, Montreal - 44
Mike Ribeiro, C, Dallas - 43
Josh Gorges, D, Montreal - 42
Ian White, D, Toronto - 42

At his current pace, had Gill not missed 14 games he'd have 64 giveaways.

If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

Jordio-oh's picture

I posted this exact same stat about 3 weeks ago and Chris made an interesting comment about how although we do clearly give the puck away alot, the high amount of our giveaways could also possibly be attributed to tendencies of the staticians at the Bell Centre to call more giveaways than any other arena.

I'm not saying thats the sole reason for our high giveaway totals, but its something to consider.

Oh and last i checked, not only do we have 4 guys in the top 10, we had 6 guys in the top 20 and no other team had more than 2 guys in the top 20.

That explains the high shots on goal and all our penalties

Ayan_SB's picture

Sidney Crosby has more giveaways than Hal Gill.

Gill>>Crosby

OK lets absorb Crosby's 8 extra giveaways and trade straight up for Gill!

HABZ24's picture

i think the captaincy should go to gointa. an ol vet who has experience and leads by example.  markov deserves it but hes a quite guy and itd be out of character for him to be assertive and out spoken as a captain must be. best pickup: bergeron by far.goalie id trust right now in the final game if we needed the points to get into the playoffs: halak for sure.

Bugs's picture

Markov gets first dibs on the C, no matter what.

If he says he's ready, guess what? He's the captain.

Like I said: within a week.

Perhaps this family issue is what has been affecting O'Byrne's game lately.

Reminds me of when Komisarek was constantly flying back to New York to spend sundays with his sick mother during his first year with the big club.

Harani's picture

The Habs website ran a poll for midterm marks for the season. Here are the people's choices. Agree or disagree?

Best Forward: Tomas Plekanec

Best Defenseman: Andrei Markov

Unsung Hero: Glen Metropolit

First-half MVP: Tomas Plekanec

Best rookie: Tom Pyatt

Most Improved: Tomas Plekanec

Biggest Revelation: Tomas Plekanec

I add to that

Best Acquisition: Marc-Andre Bergeron

Most Useless Hab: BGL

Mostly hit by opponent: Max-Pac

Remember this is taking into account only the first half of the season.

Pretty sad organization when your best rookie has 0 goals,0 assists 0 points, 2 pim, and 7 hits and is -8.The guy is awful

light_n_tasty's picture

I think if you are taking into account only the first half of the season (41 games), then I would have to say that Hammer was the best D-Man.  I agree with everything else though...

davecessna's picture

Trade Plekanec and you will pay dearly for it. Dearly.

Bugs's picture

What is this, a word from our sponsor? Where'd this come from?

Ok, Dave; thanks for the tip.

Oh, and Pitt? Don't trade Crosby; you'll pay for it dearly. Mark my words.

Edit: oh, ok, I get it. Sorry, Dave. I wasn't expecting madness further down. You're absolutely right.

... Robbie Schremp just scored one of his trick goals to put the Islanders ahead of the Avs. The sick goal started when he leaped to bring down a deflection with his glove way over his head and then with a baseball swing at waist level and roofed it from an almost impossible angle. A highlight for ever. (i see i'm a little late).

Castor's picture

Let's hope that the players all talked Martin out of his "system" because we all know how it's working out.

Also, to those who are saying to trade Pleks for a first rounder. Look at it this way.

Pouliot is a 1st rounder. Pleks has 46 points in 44 games he's playing like a first rounder. What exactly are you looking for here?

showey47's picture

anybody watching the islanders/avs game? Robbie schremp just scored a freaky goal. At first it was waived off but after review it was deemed a good.

kempie's picture

Freaky for sure. Great hand/eye on the guy. But a goal for sure.

showey47's picture

great game by the dogs, classy of chelios to stick around to sign some autographs for some bulldogs fans.

So is Yvon Lambert! Talk about a guy who turned one big goal into a lifetime of free drinks at Ye Olde Orchard Pub!

showey47's picture

I really like that pub. Had some great laughs there with some fellow HIO posters at the summit.

It's a great place! Because of coaching/playing commitments, I can't make it up to Montreal for get togethers beyond October. I'm sure you hooked up with a few of my friends there at the Summit. I enjoy your posts and look forward to meeting in person in the future!

showey47's picture

Hopefully next year the summit game will happen in october and you can make the trip. After the game when we were at hurley's your name actually came up often with regards of your posts and how they are both intelligent and damn hilarious all in one. Had some really good hockey chats with tommyb, punkster and hardhabits. I'm probably forgetting a bunch of people cause i was so freakin hammered. I do remember taking some pictures at the bar with some russian girl who was attending concordia, lol.

I hope so as well. I don't see the need to join the TBS (Toe Blake Society) when I post. There are more than enough people who feel compelled to disect every single on-ice fart. I'd rather just be entertaining like Cedric!

ParrySoundHabber's picture

He's A+ )except for his yrs in wing town when the won the hardware) lol

Who is "Cedric the Entertainer's" backup? Let's start an AHL goaltending controversy!

showey47's picture

it was curtis sanford but he is out with a separted shoulder,so right now it is robert mayer. Let the fireworks begin.

I don't know about you, but I think Ced was a tad slow going East/West this evening. And, he should have had that Chicago goal and the five the Wolves scored before coming to Hamilton!

ParrySoundHabber's picture

there is no controversy. Jesus Price will be on the cross before Easter and Cedric will be up and Hamilton will win the Calder with our nest 2 saviours.

I like that.

Are they wearing Cooperalls too?

I still have a moldy pair...can't find a landfill site  closer than Philly to take em.

Just another symptom...

Doesn't mean the Habs will make the playoffs though.

Nick_Habs1's picture

true but if we dont .... the leafs better not!

To be honest, it would be better for the game if both teams were stronger. I'm still pissed Kerry Fraser prevented the Habs from playing the Leafs for all the marbles in '93. 100th year of the Cup. It would have been one for the ages!

showey47's picture

This would be a great year for toronto to hold the draft.Their fans booing burke every time the bruins go to the podium to draft in the leafs spot, especially the first round pick which could easily be a top 2-3 pick.

ParrySoundHabber's picture

could you imagine? after all his BS in the press for getting dogged out of Montreal....while wearing a live mic....lmafo

“Talent is a gift from God, but you only succeed with hard work. Yvan was proof of that.” Jean Beliveau

Maybe it's because of my age (48), but I never viewed the Leafs as our rival. For me, it was always the Bruins. We usually beat them, but they brought out the best in the Habs.

showey47's picture

Very true,we usually play better against the bruins then we do against the leafs. But i live in ontario and having to listen to leaf fans brag about "the monster" and how great they are now (28th means your great?) and going to be makes me enjoy watching them lose.

We used to do these customer hockey games at Maple Leaf Gardens and the ACC when I worked as an economist at Salomon Brothers in NYC. The guys organizing the skates would ask us to rate ourselves when making up sides and, given where I would be playing, I always rated myself as average. Man, what passes for an A player in that town left me speechless.

slapshot777's picture

Philly smoking the Laffs so far 6-2 The monster looks awful. He can't even catch with his glove hand. His rebound control is like shooting on a shooter tutor.

I was going to comment on it but i let it go.I'm sure the dogs would be a good team in the ohl as well, lol. I like boucher's 5 on 5 full pressure offense. Not crazy about the 1-3-1 powerplay, its a high risk, high reward system. I think overall boucher has done a great job as a first year pro coach.

FIVE QUESTIONS PARTLY ABOUT THIS: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=304929

1. Will Halak be traded by the trade deadline?

2. When Bob (TSN article) talks about 'making it work' with signing Pleks and says "Whether it's a player who leaves through a different fashion to open up space...there's always a way."... who and what is he most likely talking about?

3. If Bob signed Pleks for 3 years and 18.75 million would you approve?

4. Will VGL still be a Hab by season's end?

5. What kind of contract will Price get this summer?
