Laraque, D'Agostini to sit

posted by Pat Hickey at 12h17 EST on Jan 20

Carey Price will be in goal tonight against the St. Louis Blues and it appears that Jacques Martin will dress eight defencermen with the return of Ryan O'Byrne.

Georges Laraque and Matt D'Agostini are targeted as healthy scratches and Mathieu Darche, who was called up from Hamilton on Tuesday will play with Michael Cammalleri and Tomas Plekanec.

Can the Habs lose enough games to be last in the league....  Then maybe  we can get the 1st pick.

We should dress Price on the 4th line  to fight for us  cause I'm sure he is more willing to drop the gloves  then BGL.

We need to revamp our defence  cause they  just plain suck. Gill, Mara  and Spacek are just plain terrible. Georges and O'Byrne  not to great either.

We need Andrei  back!!!!

Well we can see what kind of night Price is going to have:

Huge rebounds

Vintage puck handling

How much longer?

This team is going down the crapper. O'Byrne on 4th fw line? LoL. I want Carbo back, I miss our team being aggressive. We already got rid of the big egos in the room, I actually miss Carbo's system... At this point i'd rather have Komi on the team instead of Spacek or Gill

TR33's picture

Okay, so why is everyone obsessed with Ryan O'Byrne? Cry me a river! He should be sat for the year, traded, then tarred and feathered. He's brutal.

That's all for now.

Good in pre-season, had a couple good games before he was injured in Buffalo and was pretty good when he first came back then became erratic because of his family issues, I'm sure the Canadiens organization will send out a memo asking all players to tell their families that they should kindly make sure they are only seriously ill in the off-season.

A question for Mr Boone and the other Gazette journalists.

Given that the Canadiens make way more money than most NHL franchises, and that they can't spend that money above the salary cap, I would hope that they have a huge scouting contingent. Is this in fact the case?

Because if you can afford $1.5M for BGL, I would hope you are blanketing the country with talent scouts, since better information can only yield better draft picks.

Also, given the lack of interest in Quebec players by NHL hockey, you have to think there is an opportunity to spot talent in your own backyard that many other teams might not take. How is the Habs' intelligence network in Quebec?

Thanks.

SeriousFan09's picture

Montreal should not just scouting Quebec hockey, they should be sponsoring it. Habs should be funding youth hockey in this province, equip kids, sponsor some arena repairs, get better facilities and help teams/players meet the high registration fees so they can play. I went some night classes last year with some teenagers from middle-income families who couldn't afford double letter hockey registration.

We want the Flying Frenchmen again, Montreal should be helping them get a chance to play.

HabFanSince72's picture

I agree  completely with Serious.

It would also be a great PR move.

I don't usually agree in any way shape or form with Rejean Tremblay, but he has a point that the team needs to reconnect with the grass roots.

Yeah, but they'd be playing in Dallas or somewhere. You're right though, it is sinful expensive everywhere. No more Gordie Howes coming off a frozen pond.

They're not likely to answer that question. The Company exists to make money for the owners and shareholders. Fans are not shareholders, and not usually owners. Fans are one source of revenue. The owners return enough to ensure an adequate return on their investment. See Gillette.

If the fans were to stop buying the incidentals and tickets the team would move, not get better.

HabFanSince72's picture

Very hard to move a team in the NHL, especially the Canadiens I would think.

In the long run it might be easier to increase profits by increasing success. I should point out that in recent years the fans have not been buying tickets  (and $10 beers) to the middle and late rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Nor have RDS et al. been paying the Canadiens for the right to televise those games.

HabfanRoy's picture

I really don't understand all the animosity with the decision to put O'Bryne with our forward lines.  Think, JM might be on the verge of changing hockey as we know it. Imagine the possibilities,  Chara playing with Savard, White playing with Kessel, Green up front with Semin or how about Crosby with Gonchar, I tell ya, the possibilities are endless.

Call up Desjardins, list Price and Halak alternately as D-Men, and let them play up front as well.  Plus they'd get a chance to play with MAB and a couple of the other guys they never see down their end.

just a thought on Cormier and the others and I am not defending their actions. One has to wonder was there anything done to Cormier or another player that the refs just didn't call. We all seen the *** that Avery pulls and truefully I wouldn't care if someone elbowed him in the head and ended his career. Darcy Tucker is another one I have to laugh at Ron and Don we love the Leafs comments on Burrows but yet Tucker is one hell of a hockey player. I agree with suspending big time for these hits but I also believe a investigation on the refs in the same game to make sure they were not letting things go that lead to this. If they find this the refs should be gone too. We all seen how a ref can make your blood boil with no calls and its time to blame all parties for actions on the ice refs included.

They must be letting a lot of stuff go against Cormier because he has done this more than once. The guys who are letting things go are the coaches.

T-roy West's picture

It all falls on Gainey's shoulders and rightfully so.

Maybe his best decision was to hire Carbo?

You spelled fire wrong.

They just interviewed The Breezer on the radio and man did he sound pissed off. He said, "I am better than half of their forwards and d men and not one of them on that squad can match my glorious outlet pass. Gainey swore to me that they would not suck so bad this year as to require my services and just look at them. Now, it would take a least a week for me to get back into game shape if asked.

The reporters then caught up with Mathieu Dandenault piss drunk at a bar not far from the Bell Center. When asked what he thought of the current squad, he broke down in tears saying how disgraced he felt not to have made this team. They bought him a few rounds, but couldn't buoy his spirits.

badbalance's picture

Well Change the team apparently means get rid of hard workers with heart also. Dandy broke his arm last season, Didn't skate off the ice. He stood in front of the net with his arm broken and tried to defend... Wanna talk about Heart? Who on this team would do this for the team, I mean out of the heart not just to show how cool you are doing it... Begin Had lots of heart for the team also... We don't have that player who can give it all he got when the team is down and never give up on the play. Some players on other teams are ready to lose their eye for their team during the playoffs. Last year playoffs, was so heartless... Noone stepped up, All the girls were scared to get hit......

Who's "they"?

The reporters of course.

If we need a real goon on the 4th line, why not recall Neilson from Hamilton and send back down Laraque?

God I hope the plan is not to put O'Bryne up front to fight. He a d-man and he has a chance to be a good one. JM going to leave Mara and Gill together and ruin O'Bryne and this is why I think it time to say good bye to JM.

Mezzy's picture

JM and BG gone would be wonderful news for this organisation. Time for the Molson brothers to do something.

So I want to get this right spme people say we don't have NHL players to replace injured players . So please tell me what team has NHL players down on the farm to replace top 6 forwards.  Christ can anyone on here name the top six on Jersey or any of their d-men. How about the Rockies , all team have injuries and the kids have to step up. I don't think the talent base is all that bad for Montreal but I do believe there has been coaching problems. Will be interesting to see how Darche plays tonight after spending the year with Boucher. If he plays well then send Dags and Patts back down and let him work with those two guys. The farm is suppose to develop future players not have guys that can step in and replace a top six player. If a guy on the farm can do that he wouldn't be there.

G-Man's picture

You're gonna have to ask Don Cherry about the Rockies.

Another thought. If O'Byrne will challenge the cruiserweight arseholes, isn't he an upgrade on Laraque in that spot?

Habitants 4 -  Blue Balls 2

Goalscorers: Markov, Paccioretty, Cammy, and Pou-Pou...  *wildcard pick- O'Byrne

Karyia, and Perron (every single French player scores in MTL)....*wildcard pick- Cam Janssen

Bold Prediction: Carey Price will make a crazy save on Brad Boyes. Pierre McGuire will ask JM if he can interview his family and then talk about them on TSN.

My hopefully wrong prediction, Habs will come out like men on fire, totally outplay the blues but not score, then they will give up the first goal on some odd man rush, or softie. I hope I'm wrong. Is it true that in 50 game this year, habs have scored first goal 10 x

Bash's picture

The fourth line will see 6-7 minutes, probably less. Metro will also kill penalties and see some PP.

O'Byrne will see some shifts on D.   Bergeron will  play D on the PP.

There is no mystery here. We are essentially a three line team in this, "our darkest hour."

Help us Obiwan!

linp's picture

The problem we don't have depth in the forward position is Bob's fault and not Martin's. Once we have injury, we don't have NHL forwards to step in. Martin is trying to use the best players available to him. Since D'Agostini and BGL can't do the job, he'll dress O'Byrne. Martin plays BGL on an average of 4 minutes. The risk of playing O'Byrne for 4 mins. is quite low.

G-Man's picture

It's up to JM to get the best out of who is playing, despite injuries. DO you really think he is?

SeriousFan09's picture

Getting the best out of D'Ags and Laraque? Bowman would scratch his head on that one.

I don't think so Bowman would make hockey players out of them or they are gone. They get a couple of months under Bowman contribute or your gone case closed.

GuyDoon's picture

This is what I've seen on a few sites, but you shouldn't expect it to stick long if they get behind.

Gionta-Gomez-Pouliot

Pacioretty-Metropolit-Moen

Bergeron-Lapierre-O’Byrne

Markov-Gorges

Hamrlik-Spacek

Mara-Gill

Price
Scratched: D’Agostini, Laraque

NOTE that Boone has Metro and Laps interchanged but OB and MAB are together on the 4th line.

naweed235's picture

so u r saying plekanec - cammaleri and Darche are all healthy scratches? hehehe

GuyDoon's picture

LOL. Indeed! Hopefully miss Shangadoo noticed the error of my ways too.

the sad fact with the habs is that they are not poised to be any better next year...the players between 21-24 in the organization have limited talent..most of our young talent is on d and in goal...i think i read somewhere couple months ago that in young talent we are ranked pretty low vs other nhl teams...we have a collection of young forwards that have no ability to put the puck in the net...many fans were unhappy with latts production(even if he had no off ice issues) yet at 22 he has 61 nhl goals(not great but okay)..maxpac seems like a nice guy but he has never ever been an offensive talent(60 goals combined in 6 years of organized hockey) but we keep saying he can be developed into a 30 goal scorer,,watching him play i can say he has no natural goal scoring abilities...

he had 9mins againts the rags and zero shots.......not really scary

HABWARRIOR's picture

Screw all the nay sayers ,the price bashers, the JM bashers, the Gainey bashers, the D'agHoudini bashers, the ''why is OB playing forward tonight bashers, the Darche call up bashers, the ''we should tank '' bashers.....Screw u all!Screw u all for bashing the habs.Lets support our team.No matter what.I'm sick of the negativity i read on this site. Some may be warranted but its ridiculous. Why not speak and think posiively about the team????We will win tonight. We will make the playoffs. And when we do make the playoffs, anything can happen.Absolutely anything. When u look at our team its more or less built ,in my opinion for the playoffs. So from now on lets be positive, people!!!

---btw,the halak/price talk is a dead issue as far as i'm concerned. As a team our save percentage is 6th in the entire NHL.6th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thats f'in good if u ask me.So,stop talking about our goalies....we are solid in that position.

Chuck's picture

I like your optimism. It's sure a breath of fresh air considering alot of the Negative Nancy posts that you have to wade through lately on here.

Carey and Jaro are 19th and 20th in GAA for goalies that have appeard in at least 17 games, and their in the top third ove the league in SV%... yet overall the team sits 24th in the standings.

Plekanec 1s 17th in league scoring, Cammalleri is 41st, and Scott Gomez is 91st. That's all that we have in the top 100. Time to score some goals, guys!

Built for the playoffs?  Really?  It what way are they built for the playoffs?  Is it their mental toughness, physical size, strength of defense, or maybe the system?

The team is in 12th place and soon to be 13th.  That means they have to jump over FIVE TEAMS to make the playoffs.  FIVE TEAMS!  Forget getting the points which is doubtful, jumping that many teams under the current point system is fanciful.

Optimisim is one thing, but blind faith in the face of irrefutable facts and logic is dumb.

Habsone's picture

I think Martin doesn't know what to.  He now has two defence playing forward.  Only in Montreal.  Oh well I guess it's well worth a try.  I just feel for the fowards with the dogs waiting for there chance to play with the Habs.

G-Man's picture

If the Habs' collective failure goes exponential; after 4-2 and 6-2 losses, I expect an 8-2 drubbing tonight.

Playing MAB and O'B as forwards shows that JM has no system or clue as to what to do. After 1000 NHL games, the coach has gone Carbo! And we all wanted "someone with experience." Guess what? Tonight's going to be an "experience."

habsfan321's picture

Not to sound like a math nerd or anything, but that's not exponential...

G-Man's picture

No, it's crapotential.

SeriousFan09's picture

You mean you want MAB on D? I guess that makes three people, you, MAB and his mother. Unless she's a Montreal fan, then she probably prefers him as a winger.

G-Man's picture

MAB should sit until there's a PP. He's utterly useless as a forward, but only mostly useless on the point during a PP.

SeriousFan09's picture

He's on for 5-6 minutes of even strength and how much PP time really? It's not like his ice time could be reduced any more than it is playing 4th line winger.

Earlier today, I mentioned that management knows better that us what to do. I mentioned that they must have spoken to the "future coach" about who to call up. Then I found this little gem. Go figure!

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

Guy Boucher has been a good addition. I wouldn't mind if he stands behind the Canadiens bench someday. Cool avatar by the way.

dufour's picture

Some people seem to be a bit upset or curious as to why Darche was called up, instead of a younger player. I am actually a little anxious to see what he does. He has to know that this is most likely his last shot. He is a hometown boy and you know he is going to give it everything he's got. He has nothing to lose at this point in his career. What more can you ask of a player?

I don't understand this call up.  Darche is 33 yrs. old which means he is a man playing with a bunch of boys in the A.  And he only has 16 goals.  Alexandre Giroux is only 28 and put up 60 g's in the A last year and doesn't get a whole lot of credit at the pro level for it because he's much older than most guys out there.   I know it's a factor that he's in the Caps system and they're not in dyer need of scoring but still.  Shouldn't we be giving guys that are supposed here for the future a chance to see what it's like at this level that way when they go back down they know what to work on to make back and stay here?  And he's not even a fighter.  I expected to see him with 3 times as many PIM's than Pts and he only has 4!  Guess we'll have to wait and see what he's got.

I can understand the call up but see your point, what I don't understand is O'Byrne playing forward..lol
