Flashback: NHL's first helmet/visor

posted by Dave Stubbs at 10h35 EST on Jan 21

Canadiens great Elmer Lach had his jaw broken in 1948-49, one of three times he was so fractured during his career. So he invented a helmet/visor combination to protect himself, an invention that was banned from play by NHL president Clarence Campbell.

Here's Elmer, who turns 92 tomorrow, with his invention – which apparently was slightly ahead of its time.

A lot of the posters on Habs I/O in 2010 would probably crticize him for not being tough enough and demand he be traded. That's the prevailing mentality here these days. Whatever happens, they all know better!

Elmer Lach is a classic.

looks very football-esque!

would that be because its actually a 'football' helmet from that era retrofitted with a jaw protector?
