• At a Glance: The Canadiens faced one of the best teams in the Western Conference on Tuesday night and, despite missing their top scorer in Michael Cammalleri, came away with a 3-2 win. Jaroslav Halak set the tone with key saves early in the first period in his way to a 45 save night. Sergei Kostitsyn opened the scoring 5:56 into the period when he cut to the net and beat Roberto Luongo with a nice shot from the slot with Luongo's view obstructed. Mikael Samuelsson got that one back for the Canucks at the 8:26 mark on the power play, but Maxim Lapierre gave the Canadiens a 2-1 lead with two minutes to play. After a scoreless second period, Tomas Plekanec gave Montreal a 3-1 edge when he flipped the puck over Luongo during a goal-mouth scramble. But the Canucks didn't stop coming and Ryan Kesler scored another power-play goal with Mathieu Darche in the penalty box for four minutes. Luongo made 25 saves while the Canucks went 2-for-5 on the power play. Montreal was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

• Key Moments: Montreal was able to weather a storm by the Canucks at the start of every period, mostly thanks to Halak, and was able to score a key goal midway through the third period to secure the victory.

• What It Means: The Canadiens improve to 26-25-6 on the season and have 58 points, good for seventh spot in the Eastern Conference pending the outcome of the New York Rangers game in Los Angeles late Tuesday night.

• What's Next: Montreal is in Boston on Thursday and is then home for a pair of afternoon game on Super Bowl weekend as the Penguins come to town on Saturday and the Bruins are at the Bell Centre on Sunday.

Is Gainey going to trade either Price or Halak? If he does, who is the backup?

Here are some thoughts on that matter:

i think you meant plekanec scored the securing goal in the 3rd period. last time i checked, goalies don't spend much time scoring, not even halak...

gohabsgo25's picture

who thinks gainey shud grab brenden witt off waivers. i do because hes a solid veteran who can hit and is a good defence but not fast.

what do you think

Not a chance, we have enough slow defencemen that are well beyond their best years... especially for 3mill a year.

It's done, Halak signed a contract with the Habs!

Now, the Princess can be traded and get a forward to replace Cammi for this year's run to the playoffs.

It is about $$$  isn't it?

Was it this headline at RDS: " Une victoire signée Jaroslav Halak"

Hello 'penny for your thoughts'.  I heard it from the rumour mill and it made sense thus the posting, does it NOT make sense to you?

Pre Game

Who wouldn't be doing that? During RDS' opening sequence, and while everybody else at the rock concert is going insane as the band plays, there are two guys playing table hockey. Yes, of course. Reminds me of that Clapton-Knopfler concert at the Forum all those years ago, where me and my buds passed the time playing Coleco's Electronic Quaterback (TM). Why, it's all coming back to me: “It's late in the evening” boop-beep-beep-boop “She's wondering what clothes to wear” beep-beep-boop-boop...

Mise-O-Duh. Why even bother having Dave Morisette or Bergy tape the most inane 30 seconds you'll ever see on RDS, outside of some guy screaming “Birdie!” while four fat guys play televised mini-putt? Seemingly without fail, whoever of the two is unfortunate enough to draw the short straw that day breathlessly works his way through some pseudo-analysis before invariably just picking the three favourites. Why bother? Save everyone the trouble and just broadcast the Mise-O-Jeu logo, complete with a picture of Bergy 'n' The Goof giving each other a big thumbs-up and “Comme toujours!” superimposed on the screen.

Game

The Habs need to turn it on at the drop of the puck. The Habs' intensity is rarely high at the outset of a game; absence of mental preparation? If the goaltending isn't pristine right out of the gate, then the team is playing catch-up hockey, something we've seen time and again this season. Last night, in another very solid outing, Halak kept the team in the game when Vancouver really poured it on early but, frankly, if I want that kind of drama, I rent a movie. I would really like to see the Habs start hitting the jets from the get-go, rather than playing reaction hockey. Game in and game out.

When the Habs do turn it on, however. Like any playoff-bound team, the Canucks don't rely solely on talent to carry the team. They forecheck like mad dogs. Really dangerous. Obviously, the only solution to this is to make them pay with 1-on-1 D-zone intensity. Last night, and unlike what we saw on the Florida trip, the Habs proved they can discourage the efficiency of a strong forechecking opponent. By the third period, the Habs successfully regained control of their slot and were forcing Vancouver – which, at this point, was just shooting – increasingly to the outer edge of the slot and beyond.

Yeah, but what else does he bring? That Sedin guy is awesome. This dude covers so much territory, it's like he's always in two places at once. Why can't the Habs get a player like that to come to Montreal?

Pouliot trade upgraded back to awesome from previous great. Benoit Pouliot continues to demonstrate that he's the real deal; such deliberate play. In view of his two assists last night, however, Benoit was clearly concerned his 11 goals but only one measly assist in 18 games might compel some increasingly forgettable, flatulent, and xenophobic sports columnist to write that Pouliot is only worried about une grande cause: la sienne. Don't worry, Benny: You're safe.

Post Game

They make ham? God bless Lafleur's and their ads showcasing their broad, pork-based product line that includes ham, bacon, etc. Unfortunately, mention LaFleur's to anyone watching a Habs game – heck, you could even do it while one of the the commercials is running – and the only thing that will ever come to mind is beer-fueled fantasies of steamies, michigans-onions-fromage, and a heap o' fries at 3 o'clock in the morning.

They make Egg McMuffins(TM)? And god bless Tim Horton's for finally capitulating to McDonald's by introducing a novel new product, namely eggs, bacon/sausage, and cheese between two english muffins. The chalky, flavourless biscuit diversion didn't work out? Really? We knew where you were headed from the outset, Tim, so next time just skip all the BS and do like Burger King does: Rip it right off, right from the start.

WOW!!

When Ryder left our organization, there was a mob headed for Gainey's house with torches and pitchforks, screaming for his head. The backlash seemed to last forever, especially when the Beantown Boys played us and Ryder scored.

Now that Ryder's name has popped up on the available list, I really don't see anyone on here jumping up and down, demanding that we get him back.

My thoughts on last night:

POSITIVES

i)   My boy Jaro, what can I say.  He should play 20 of our last 25 games, period.

ii)  Will the real SK74 please stand up?  If last night was any indication that Sergei is healthy and back to normal, the habs' offense is in for a real shot in the arm.

iii)  OB, outstanding defensive effort, AGAIN.  He is our only defenseman who goes for the body, rather than swipe at the puck aimlessly (Gill, Mara, MAB if applicable).  Be prepared for even further improvements in his game.

iv)  Georgie, all around awesome performance. He catapulted our transitional game and recognized weaknesses in Vancouver's forecheck.  Some great hits as well.

v)  Benny, making things happen by attracting ALOT of attention, clearly the way for the little guys.  He should play along side of SK74 and Plex with his uncanny ability to create time and space for his linemates.

vi)  I know Darche screwed up on that double-minor, but he was utterly spectacular on the forecheck, ultimately leading to the Lappy goal.  He belongs on the Gomer line with Gio.

NEGATIVES:

i)  Lappy, despite scoring a goal, many errand passes and bad decisions; too many turnovers in the neutral zone.

ii)  Marky has not been himself as of late.  He's having covergae issues and not recognizing potential opponent odd-man rushes.

iii)  Hammer, stop watching Burrows' play and stay on your GD feet.  Seems like he's starting to finally tired out after a real physical and busy first half on the season.  I, for one, am glad he is not playing in Vancouver.  He clearly needs the rest.

iv)  Ben Maxwell is just not ready yet, again, many bad decisions especially on the attack (that 3-1 should have resulted in a better scoring opportunity than what occurred).  I do see alot of potential here.  He's got plenty of speed and doesn't mind rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hummmmm, I only saw the 3rd, but I thought Hammer played one of his better games!!

I'm also really starting to wonder why Markov's play is below his talent level...He came back and played 4 monster games, but hasn't looked like himslef the past few weeks.

habsguy's picture

He does look tired,  I think he'll play himself back into shape though

jmsheehy19's picture

I don't agree about Maxwell, while I agree he definitely made some mistakes, he's still adjusting and I saw a lot that I like from him: Went to the net well; has pretty good hands; was surprisingly effective along the boards; hustles on the backcheck.

I'll even admit that he was one of our 3 or 4 worst players last night, but honestly that's to be expected. I say keep him up till AK gets back, and I think you'll see him get his legs under him, so to speak.

SeriousFan09's picture

Markov's skating isn't 100% yet I believe is the issue. His speed has often let him make up a lot of mini-mistakes he's made and cover his aggressive play by coming back quickly to cover his own zone. I've seen him beat by offensive players this season that he would never have been beaten by this time last year. His speed may never restore 100% which means he may have to adjust his game, but I'd rather see what he gives next season before I am certain of that.

headbagger33's picture

It was my pleasure reading your fine analysis although I’m left wondering what an “errand pass” is. Is it when a player makes a pass right before he heads out to pick up milk? Or a pass to a teammate who is on their way to get their stick taped or skates sharpened? Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me.

lefreak's picture

markov looked tired last night.

there was a point on the pk where MAB coughed up the puck to Burrows. Burrows outskated MAB and swept easily towards Halak. Markov seemed to give up and his legs were not moving. Luckily for us, the puck got turned away by Jaro.

It isn't easy to come back mid season, and many analysts expected Markov to come out firing out of the gate and slow down a bit. I hope he gets his legs back, because he is by far the most talented guy on our team.

SeriousFan09's picture

Because SmartDog inspires all of us, 5 Questions for your Wednesday!

1. Is the problem with JM's coaching style is that he tries to take control of the team too much and doesn't let them play the looser style that our offensive players are more comfortable with when he's frustrated with the team's results or that his style is just not suited for post-lockout hockey?

2. Is Jaroslav Halak capable of playing a starting role? Stats aside right now, Halak has not played more than 40 games in a season since his 1 season with the Lewiston MAINEiacs in the 04-05 QMJHL season, never played over 30 games in the AHL and has not topped 40 in the NHL. Does he have the composure and ability to be a starting man, or is he more like a Ty Conklin/Nittymaki, capable of great games and good stretches but never often enough to lead the team as a top goaltender.

3. If the post-season is made because of grinding efforts like last night's win, should a captain be announced going into the playoffs and who should be named?

4. Should Maxim Lapierre be given a chance to turn it around next season, regardless of how this one finishes out? We often talk about how we've given up on our top prospects too early.

5. What should be the focus for the Canadiens at the next entry draft, regardless of draft position?

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

lefreak's picture

1. The problem with JM's coaching style is that it does not exist. Let the opponent shoot like gangbusters and hope that whoever is in nets that night stands on his head is not effective, nor a style.

2. Who knows? I will say that with the way he is playing now, give him the benefit of the doubt. With a save % like his, JM would be a fool not to ride him while he is hot, especially considering how many shots he faces per game. Giving Jaro the number 1 should have been Carey's wake up call. When the kid realizes that he is being outplayed for what was supposed to be his job, he should show the fire in his belly like he did when he won the WJC. Hopefully Price will show some fire in the odd starts he gets from here until the end of the year, and respond with intensity instead of the slouching and eye rolling we are starting to get used to seeing. Right now Jaro winning a few games is the best thing that ever happened to Price. Imagine if we didn't have Jaro?

Our defense has been terrible no matter who plays. Put Jaro on a team with a good defense and he can easily carry the workload i think. Jaro will get offers from other teams for sure, he is better than Ray Emery. *hint hint...i am willing to bet anything philly bids for him*

3. I wouldn't call yesterday's effort grinding at all. If Jaro doesn't make the saves, we all lambaste the habs instead of saying they played a good game. Giving up 47 shots is not grinding, grinding is playing defense. A captain should be named by the players and not management....and it should have been done a long time ago. What are you telling your players when you don't even let them make this choice? Nothing but a lack of confidence in your personel.

I'm not in the dressing room, so i won't pick one. The players should vote as it has always been done.

4. I think Maxim is gone. He has not played great, but i blame JM in not giving him a role on the team. He should be killing penalties instead of Gomez. Make him take important faceoffs, give him a purpose other than eating minutes on the lower lines. Remember when Carbo worked with him non stop on his faceoffs? He responded by good 2 way play. Without a purpose you can't expect him to invent his own. If another team gives him a role to play, he will do well.

5.[obligatory]big center[/obligatory]...now that the big center is out of the way, i will say that i don't really care as long as it is some much needed grit that we go after...unless we get a top 5 pick. When was the last time we had a player that makes opposing players keep their heads up on the ice and be nervous? I can't remember. I would love a big slab of beef that is not afraid to make opposing players keep their heads up over some "finesse" player that makes too many passes and can't back/forcheck. (too many of those already)..i thought moen would help with this, but i have been disapointed.

punkster's picture

Not bad for a first attempt. May be better if you didn't push your own viepoint within the context of each question. That smacks of SD's Gomez slants in his questions (that was a big ;) to SD). But a good start here SF:

1. no

2. yes

3. yes but I don't care who

4. yes, except if he can be packaged in a deal that improves the team

5. a bigger forward who can score (yes we need better D but they take so long to mature I'd prefer we trade for or buy one)

SmartDog's picture

Thanks.

1. JM's coaching... I think it's the style, and not just the style of play but the style of discipline. There are books writen about how culture/people/employees have changed in the post-Internet world... JM is living in the olden days.

2. YES. I think Halak is ready to be a starter.  And certianly much more ready than Price. He'll need to adjust but I think every impression is that he can do it.

3. Tough call on Captains.  I think part of the problem is a lack of clarity about which direction the team is going. We're just a little speedy and we're absolutely not tough.  So who is the sympbolic leader.. someone soft but quick?

4. Keep Lats. Don't give him the satisfaction of bering traded.  But put the SOB in the press box for crying out loud!  He's been given too much rope.

5. Next draft, I would focus on big and fearless forwards.  Centers and wingers. Agitators. Snipers.  Just go big and hard to play against. They don't have to be the most finess players, but they have to understand the game, their role, and be fearless.  Basically... the opposite of what we have.

Good questions!

PS: a little trick I use - make your first question an easy (and short) one.  ;)

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

jmsheehy19's picture

1) Not sure, there are times when you can see our breakout pattern being incredibly effective, and on those nights we look great. But most nights, it's absolutely awful, and on those nights we look horrible. I think far too much is made of the "system." Personally, other than passing out of the zone (D passes to forward on the half-boards, he passes to forward skating out of the zone) I don't see a system. We're not a puck possession team despite Martin saying so, as is evident in almost every game. We dump and chase A LOT. When the puck comes out to us in the neutral zone and we have a player trapped in the offensive zone, we just slap it back in, while a puck possession team (ala Detroit) passes it back to their dmen and restarts the rush. We should focus on being a counter-attack team, as that seems to be when we are at our most dangerous, but honestly our "system" seems to have 20 variations and few of them are effective. Soooooo, i just managed to write an paragraph with no answer to your question.

2) Maybe, time will tell.

3) I would say no. Either name him before we get to the playoffs or at the beginning of next season.

4) Yes, without question.

5) Big bruising defencmen or big bodied center.

All SK really wanted was to play in the bigs, so now that he's probably here to stay, I reckon he'll stick around. He's coming along, but I'd like to see him putting up a few more points. AK was playing great before he went down too, so here's hoping both of them will elevate their game moving forward. We'll need them to, because there doesn't seem to be a lot of offensive depth elsewhere in the organization.

But then, Bob's gonna gobsmack (Bobsmack?) us with a couple of big trades in the next few weeks that will re-stock the shelves, right?

SmartDog's picture

I just don't get it.

Can someone explain to me why ANYONE could think Gomez is "the best passer in the league" and not the guy that, while sure he makes good passes sometimes:

1. Make bad and blind passes just as often, and gives away the puck like a rookie.

2. Loses the puck at the blue line constantly.... dishes as soon as he gets in trouble.

3. A .8 ppg player and not a guy whose stats suggest that his magic makes things happen out there.

Am I watching a different guy?  91 on the Habs right?

--------------------------------------------------- Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!

twocents's picture

There's no accounting for what you see, and saying he is the best passer in the league is ridiculous so long as Joe Thornton is still playing, but the facts bear out, my dear dog, that Gomez has the 6th highest assist per game totals in the NHL over the past 10 years. You don't rate like that without being an elite passer. It's that simple.

This despite not having exactly elite scorers on his lines for most of his career.

And how about this assessment from faceoff.com "Possesses terrific vision and passing skills. Also features outstanding speed, puck-handling ability and agitating qualities."? Which I know you've read because you've quoted his weaknesses from the site. Their scouting report on him was even more glowing in this facet previously.

What are the numbers the last 3-4 yrs, which is more relevant imo. Where does he rank? What happened before the lockout has no bearing on the present.

twocents's picture

His assists per game is actually marginally higher since the lockout than it was before. As far as his rank goes, you do the leg work. Since his rate is about the same I feel pretty sure he'll still be up there.

I guess the problem is that now everyone knows he is going to pass, he NEVER shoots and as a result aware players steal the puck from us consistently.  He is a great passer but the sad thing is he is also great at several other things, skating with the puck, speed, awareness, defensive commtment.....the problem is he is hurting his own passing ability by not keeping defenses and goalies honest.  He has a decent shot but only seems to take weird angled shots....he HAS to shoot more and start threatening to take the puck to the net himself.  We all know he isn;t worth his contract evenat career best numbers let alone the other stuffwe gave up but gomez is extremely frustrating.....even tanguay who I believe had similar playmaking skills was more of a threat to go to the net with the puck and shoot.  Even crosby realized that without being a shooting threat himself he was limiting his options and allowing defenders to overplay...he changed the curve on his stick and started thinking goal more and is leading the league.  Now don;t get me wrong Gomez is not crosby but his skills are far greater thana 10-15 goal guy...twith the positions his skillset get him into he should be a 25 goal guy year in and year out yet he only has ever reached that mark once.

twocents's picture

I don't disagree krob, in fact I agree wholeheartedly, but Ian said he was one of the best passers in the league and the stats bear him out.

For the record, SmartDog, re-reading Ian's post, he never said he was the BEST passer in the league, he said he is ONE of the best, and he is, regardless of whether you can see it or not. You manipulated his words to strengthen your point, not exactly a fair move.

habsguy's picture

you should be used to that from most posters here

I wasn't trying to get into that dispute.....just saw an opportunity to harp on Gomez lol...yeah he can pass but what else does he bring!  Harping on Sergei for not shooting and getting open away from the puck seemed to work so maybe Gomez's sister's boyfriend's uncle Jimbo's cousin Rufus will see this and make a call and tell Scotty that all passing no play makes Scotty a dulll boy. PS as Likehoy pointed out it wouldn;t be bad idea if every now and then Sergei didn;t get of the ice at exactly the right time.....he passed up a 3 on 2 last night.

twocents's picture

Isn't Sergei a sight when he's on? Bucket loads of talent, that boy... I can't wait to see what else he can bring.

Hmmm ... Bruins have made Mike Ryder available on the trade market. Nah, I don't think so .....

Thought Rhino played a fine game last night. We need efforts like that from everybody, we are getting down to it.

The Priceberg, the K Brothers, Josh Gorges, a 1st and a 2nd rounder. (had PK in there, took him out, even though he would be num1 demand)

For Kovalchuk?

And have Markov make the call?

Do it, do something!

With Markov making the call, well it's in the bag!

His quote on a former teammate will add tremendously to his position.

Dreamin again, Bugsy?  Or a nightmare?

Smabs are Pretenders and have been for 2 decades!

If we were sure of re-signing him. But that can't be assured

NO FRIGGIN WAY.

wow !!!!!!!!!...you should be the GM....who would have thought it would that easy!!

Are you serious?

I may be wrong, but last I heard MTL was just under the cap limit.

Say you move Price (2.2 Mill), Kostitsyn Brothers (3.25 Mill and 825K) and Gorges (1.1 Mill)...

You end up with about a total of 7.5 - 8.0 million for Kovalchuk.

Given thats probably what he'll end up going for, how do you expect to sign Plekanec, Halak, Pouliot, Lapierre,  not to mention the other UFA and RFA's ??

The last thing Montreal needs right now are two 7-8 million dollar / year contracts.

lefreak's picture

all that for a player that will not resign with us...brilliant move.

If someone offers more than we do at 100mil for 10 years, he might not re-sign with us.

But you look to be one of those folks what can see the future so I don't wanna get ahead of myself here.

I'd prefer to keep A Kos if possible but ya I would send Price packing if we could get Kovy signed to a long term dealio...

Did you go to the Mike Milbury school of GM'ing?

Bugs, way too much for a potential free agent.

Frolov + Jack Johnson+ 1st round + plus a prospect (don't know the Kings prospect system too well) for Kovy + Kubina.

twocents's picture

If LA could sign Kovy II, that would be a great trade for them and not too bad for Atlanta either.

jmsheehy19's picture

seems to make sense, unless someone throws a boatload at Waddel. They want a top 6 (Frolov) prospects and picks. The kings and Lombardi seem like they want to be rid of Johnson and they want experience on the blueline, this does both and Atlanta exchanges a 32 year old defensmen for a 23 year old with high potential as they get younger.

the kings are loaded with youth...it makes me jealous, although they had to play a lot of horrible hockey to get them all.

thanks for the link lefreak, I knew they have one of the best prospect pool in the leagues, just didn't know the prospects individuallly besides the obvious ones like Bernier, Schenn, and Hickey.

i have not  done the math..but could we fit him in.?

I wish people would realize that Bob Gainey didn't give Scott Gomez an expensive contract, he acquired it, because he had to.

I wish they would realize that we have two excellent goalies on the NHL club and an excellent one waiting on the AHL club.

I wish they could realize that small doesn't mean soft.

I wish they could realize that there's more to contract negotiations than the words "ok" and "done".

And I wish they could see that this team has an ok present and a very bright future.

The negativity is out of control.  No team is perfect, and no team will ever be perfect.  THE STANLEY CUP WINNER FROM TWO YEARS AGO HAD CHRIS OSGOOD IN NET.
