• UPDATE, 5:22 pm: Canadiens recall David Desharnais, Brock Trotter and Ryan White from Hamilton

So who's in the lineup Saturday to kickoff the Super Bowl matinée weekend?

The Stanley Cup-champion Pittsburgh Penguins at the Bell Centre Saturday at 2 pm, the badly limping Boston Bruins paying a return visit to Montreal Sunday at 3 pm following the Habs' 3-2 shootout win last night in Boston. Thank goalie Jaroslav Halak (again) for last night's victory. There's no sign of Jaro cooling off, any time soon.

Four Canadiens took therapy days, and late this afternoon the team confirmed it was recalling forwards David Desharnais, Brock Trotter and Ryan White from Hamilton. One or more of them will see duty today, Bergeron declared out for the weekend with a lower-body injury after having stopped a shot against Boston on Thursday.

Pat Hickey reports this callup puts Bergeron on injury-reserve; he cannot play until next Friday vs. Philadelphia.

The other three clinic patients might be game-time decisions, or they might have been in for regular maintenance.

The only call-up we've had that has had any impact is Darschle,a 31 yr old career minor leaguer..What an awful pipepline to Hamilton this year. BG must go

Hello from Kathmandu!  Sounds like I'm missing watching Halak save our season!  I may also be responsible for 100% of this site's traffic from Nepal right now. : )

A long way from the Bell Centre

Most sincere condolences to Brian Burke and family. Maybe an enemy in the small world of hockey but certainly a wish to extend friendship in the larger world of life.

Bogie Man's picture

Hmmm I smell something in the works. Pouliot and Plekanac sitting for unknown reasons. You recall 3 players from the minors. Your top point getters are Pouliot and Plekanic and we are playing the penguins today. Unless JM is getting really soft with these players and really giving these two guys a break (rest),  which I doubt we are going to make a trade and soon. If we give up Pouliot and Pleks and I suspect Price or Halak, we best be getting something extremely good in return such as a very strong Back up to Halak and an amazing goal scorer and perhaps some leadership.

The Cat's picture

What? Pouliot and Plekanec arent going to play today?

The Cat's picture

I guess the upside to this is Halak is more than likely to face 40+ shots, if not 50 lol

If you think Gainey is going to make a trade, throw away your joint, and think clearly.Gainey couldn't make a deal to save his life. And if he does make a big deal it will be a disaster.Look at his trading history.Get Real.

G-Man's picture

Hey, Jack Todd, stop worrying. It's only a game...nah! Are you having a bad time at work or have the meds run out. (Joking) BG's latest has worked out for both teams. Chipchura is doing fine in Anaheim and the Habs lost a slow-footed soldier.

'nuff said. 'nuff written. 'nuff posted.

Chips,a 1st rder ,traded for a 4th rder..Now he's turned into a tough defensive center. I'd take him over Laps any day. Another brilliant move.BG must go.

It obviously is very important to get some talented players in a trade where you are giving up other talented players. However, in habs' case, who they GET RID of is probably even more important.(i.e. gill, mara, and perhaps spacek)

SeriousFan09's picture

No way is Pouliot getting moved just after we got him, we're just getting a hint of what this guy's potential could be. Call-ups were made because with the 2 PM start, there's next to no window if some of these guys have to be game-time scratches and if replacements are needed we need White, Desharnais and Trotter on deck rather than in Hamilton ready to go.

I don't think we'll see any significant trades this week moving such high-value assets, Price, Pouliot and Pleks are a gigantic package which would mean a swap of top assets between two teams and I just don't see that kind of deal happening.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

Bogie Man's picture

I know and respect what you are saying however if we are trying to attract (that is "if") a major impact player how do we attract that with the Likes of Mara, Spacek etc. It will not happen. However if we place Pouliot and/or Pleks not only does it free up cap space to make room for an impact player, it makes it more attractive for the team on the other side of the trade. You cannot expect to get something with a lot of nothing. I am not saying this is going to happen this week, however think about what we can get and maybe it would be giving away the farm depending on what we get in return of course.

G-Man's picture

BG isn't Waddell. He won't trade his #1 scorer and playmaker for an "impact" player. Pleks already is one. The first developed by the Habs in many a year (besides Markov and Halak).

MY CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE BURKE FAMILY..

Although I do think McGuire is a complete tool, and obviously Plek's agent just used him to put pressure on BG by letting him go public with that statement, I doubt very much BG will sign pleks. They want too much, and as has been seen repeatedly over his tenure, if you go $1 outside the price BG has in mind, bye bye.

light_n_tasty's picture

I also think McGuire's a tool...but did he really need Plek's agent to tell him that?  I mean, it seems pretty obvious.  Gainey said that he is working on getting a deal done with Plek's before July 1st.  Therefore, if Pleks is not signed by July 1st, the deal did not get done, and he's going to get some great offers from better teams.  Pretty much a no-brainer.

smiler2729's picture
I'm not enamored of Plekanec like most here. Trade him and get something before he bolts as a UFA and signs a huge contract with New York or somewhere and disappears into mediocrity.

smiler2729's picture

Is there some kind of trade about to come down? Calling up three Bulldogs for one injury is odd.

My heart goes out to Brian Burke and his family. Brings back the horrible memory of Bob Gainey losing Laura five years ago. Tuck your kids in a little tighter tonight.

Fargo Habs Fan's picture

Yes there is Smiler, and I am so glad you asked.  I actually have inside info on this from my boss' maid of honour who happened to marry a former player who may or may not have been scouted by Bob Gainey back in the Dallas days.  Here is the skinny: Edmonton will send us their first and Brule in exchange for Price, Pleks.  Then they will continue their ugly season and win us the #1 overall pick, where we will draft Taylor Hall, rush him to the big show, call for his head, trade him and Danny Kristo to Minnesota for Cal Clutterbuck and Guillaume Latendresse who will, upon landing in Montreal, instantly revert to the form that made him so popular on Habs Inside/Out and will curse our very existence until the end of time, or, until a savior (preferably French) arrives to deliver us to the promised land... in 2067.

I <3 Stoli.

-Dustin-

On a sober note, may God be with the Burke family and give them strength in their time of tragedy.

Halak the way you thrill the fans,
Halak the way you give your team a chance,
Halak the way you grab the puck from the air,
Halak the way you never seem to despair,
Halak the way you stop the puck,
Halak the way you rarely suck,

but most of all....
yeah..
most of all....

Halak the way you move.....

who u guys think gonna be between the pipes tomorrow HALAK OR PRICE,

and what u do with the back to back situation let halak play both or split them???

keepthefaith's picture

For once i agree with everyone.  Halak tomorrow, price sunday.  We have to ride the hot hand but also not burn the hot hand out, while keeping our backup plan sharp.   Its a fine line which i am sure we will screw up. :)

Bugs's picture

Burn a 24-yr-old? Please.

If he wins and he's good to go, you put Halak back in.

keepthefaith's picture

So sorry masta, we do as you say.

habrez's picture

Maybe if he wasn't facing 40 + shots a game he could play back to back and not worry about getting burned out halfway through the second game.

Eliisa's picture

I am in agreement with Oshawahabsfan. I think Halak starts tomorrow and then Pricey on Sunday. It would be very tempting to put Halak in for both. He is a given for tomorrow (in my opinion of course) but he played so well against Boston last night. He does need to rest though. So therefore I would be inclined to put Price in for Sunday.

bostonantifan's picture

Why does a 24 year old goalie, a professional athlete, presumably in top physical shape, need a rest? You've got to be kidding! Roy, Dryden, Hasek, Vachon, Fuhr all used to be able to play 10 - 20 games in a row without needing a rest. I would bet that if asked, Halak would laugh at the notion he needs a rest.

christophor's picture

Agreed with Halak on Sat and Price on Sun, unless Halak pulls off a shutout on Sat that doesn't require him to exert himself to the extreme. The team will have to do better in front of him for that to happen. Gotta go with whats working. Price says so too.

Habscat's picture

Gotta go with Halak again. We need to win and he is the hot hand right now.

oshawahabsfan's picture

I think it should be Halak tomorrow, Price Sunday

SeriousFan09's picture

Probably so, Halak gets the tougher game, then a rest while Price plays the one team he has solidly dominated this season in his two starts against them.

Stan Bowman took over from Dale Tallon, who was shuffled in the Hawks organization. Upper management got tired of his cap management and the gaffe over the RFA qualifying offers didn't help him out. Huet at 5.6 million, Campbell at 7.1 put that team in a lot of trouble cap-wise.

doug's picture

If they trade with us, which I know you weren't implying, they'd probably want Halak for the now rather than Price for the hypothesized future.

SeriousFan09's picture

I actually talked about that trade to start the year thinking it might be a possible move by Chicago, but who would come back I wonder? Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson are untouchable, Campbell's an albatross, Sopel's not worth it and Barker isn't what we need with Subban coming up and Markov around. Most of their forwards are already on big contracts aside from a couple guys and their Bottom 6 guys aren't anything particularly outstanding. Don't see how we can swing the trade unless Bowman really, really wants Halak and gives up something juicy for him.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

HEY NON SERIOUS HABS FAN;DID THEY LET YOU OUTTA THE HOME -AGAIN???!!

In order to escape the boys in the white jackets i want you to write and repeat(like a mantra) they following statements(every 5 minutes until you know them by heart)

1)Halak is our #1 goalie. He is much better than Price!

2)Nobody in his right(or wrong) mind will trade Halak.

3)Halak can get us into the playoffs.

4)Halak is just getting better the more he plays.7 big wins ,ZERO loses on 40 shots or more per game-incroyable!!!!!(7-0 just in case you forget)

5) Halak is closing in on league leads in Goals against, save percentage, and won lost percentage.

6) Halak is a great team player;never a harsh word or gaze at his defense-only positive.

Repeat these facts and you may avoid some ECT.which i garantee will burn those confused neurons to never never land, and OH YEAH-make sure the straps on the straight jacket are not too tight! One day you may even learn how to properly assess talent.

SeriousFan09's picture

While I have been accused of being somewhat eccentric in my behaviours at times, you calling me the crazy person is rather suspicious I would say say. You get far too overly sensitive about Jaroslav Halak you know, relax, count to ten and think about if trolling everyone who questions Jaroslav Halak's ability, trade value or possibility of his being traded is worth all this time you put in to it.

I offered my opinion about why a trade with Chicago isn't really something that would work out, unless Chicago was set to overpay Montreal greatly with a high-value asset which I don't think they will. I stated I don't think there's anyone on the Chicago roster that helps us out due to the cap hit involved coming to us and we wouldn't likely get a good return unless Chicago is really, really desperate or Gainey can manage a robbery like all the recent big trades in the NHL. I stated that below as well, I don't think the trade is happening, I thought the trade might have happened at this time when the season started had Price been a superior goalie than he has been this season but that did not occur.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

Sorry, ain't biting....At this point and time only a Moron would even think about trading Halak....so I know you are just trying too sturr the pot (nice try)

SeriousFan09's picture

Wasn't trying to stir the pot, just noting that I don't see how a trade could be swung with Chicago. They have a number of big contracts and we can't take any of them on really, I thought it would be plausible early on in the year had Price had a full comeback from last year's problems but that obviously hasn't happened. Not everything is a sneak attack on Halak you know, give it a rest.

habs4ever2894's picture

If some how the canadiens are holding down a playoff spot by trade deadline and BG is willing to upgrade our 3rd line and our D we could potentially be very dangerous IF everyone is healthy.

I would be like to see our roster look something like this.

Pouliot- Gomez- Gionta

Kostitsyn- Plekanec- Cammalleri

S.Kostitsyn- Koivu - Torres

Moen- Metropolit- Darche

Markov- Niedermayer

Hamrlik- Spacek

Obyrne- Georges

Gill- Mab

We trade Lapierre, Dagostini , Maxwell and a 2nd rounder to anaheim for Koivu and Niedermayer

We trade a 3rd rounder to columbus for Torres

This is assuming that anaheim and columbus drop out of playoff contention.

sm00re's picture

You have 2 too many players (you can only dress 20, including goalies). I'd love to see koivu back, but I'm not a big fan of Niedemayer or Torres.

ooder's picture

that sounds like a good idea bu tno way will that work.

i don't think we can afford neidermayer...

also i don't think anaheim will take garbage for thier captain..

but if we can get saku back i will be very happy

habs4ever2894's picture

They took Chipchura.......

ooder's picture

for a 4th round pick...

i meant that you can't give garbage and expect something good in return

habs4ever2894's picture

Niedermayer is way past his prime and so is koivu. They are also both ufa's at seasons end so if anaheim isn't  in a playoff spot then i dont see why anaheim would refuse making a trade for some young players and picks.
