• At a Glance: The Canadiens were missing two more key players thanks to injuries and played with a fourth line made up of three members of the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. But they found a way to defeat the defending Stanley Cup champions 5-3 at the Bell Centre, a third straight win for Montreal. With Benoit Pouliot and Marc-André Bergeron placed on the injured reserve list, David Desharnais, Brock Trotter and Ryan White were called up and played on a line together Saturday, arguably the best one on the ice for either team. Tomas Plekanec opened the scoring 29 seconds into the game when Marc-André Fleury was knocked down behind the net by Mathieu Darche, leaving the net wide open. Pascal Dupuis got that one back 33 seconds later on a rebound given up by Jaroslav Halak after a great save on Jordan Staal. Brian Gionta scored on a breakaway in the second and Scott Gomez made it 3-1 midway through the second with a power-play goal. Bill Guerin made it 3-2 before the period was over, but Darche scored seven minutes into the third with a slapshot from the faceoff circle, chasing Fleury. Gionta scored his second of the game with nine minutes to play on Brent Johnson, who took Fleury's place. Evgeni Malkin made it 5-3 with three minutes to play with a shorthanded goal seconds after he left the penalty box. It was the first time Montreal defeated the Penguins this season, who had outscored the Canadiens 12-4 in the previous three meetings.

• Key Moments: With the game tied 1-1, the Canadiens killed off three Pittsburgh power plays and Gionta scored 13 seconds after the end of the third penalty in the second period.

• What It Means: Montreal solidified its hold on sixth place in the Eastern Conferece with 62 points (28-25-6), three points ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning. That could change later Saturday as both teams are in action.

• What's Next: The Canadiens play the Bruins on Sunday in the second half of their weekend matinées. The red-hot Washington Capitals are in town on Wednesday and then the Canadiens play a home-and-home series against the Philadelphia Flyers Friday and Saturday before heading into the Olympic break.

THIS IS WHAT IM TALKIN BOUT! One of these days I'm going to have to catch a Bulldogs game when they play the Marlies. Gotta see for myself what Boucher's team is all about.

in light of all the positivity today, i'll see you all at the parade

Rainrocket16's picture

Very Happy for the Habs recent Success, but don't think that the B's will lay down tommorrow. That will be a good game. Also about the Price comments below....I am a Halak fan and always have been ever since he started backing up Carey and proving his potential last year. I feel that Price made his own problems, remember the playoffs against the Flyers. Yes he is young and he will get much better, but don't you HAB fans forget what Roy proved as a rookie and following years. Price has been labeled the next great one, give him some time and he may be the next Thibault. Halak may be, just maybe be the next Hasek.

The Cat's picture

I ran into Jocelyn Thibault at a girls hockey tournament, he's not as small as I thought hed be.

light_n_tasty's picture

Was he the backup?

PLEASE, Mr. Martin, keep the "kid line" together! That line has some juice! Loved White's fight and the 2 consecutive penalties they drew.

Go Habs Go!

christophor's picture

yes, the trotter-desharnais chemistry got the gomez-gionta chemistry going again via the powerplay.

aemarchand11's picture

Congrats to the Leafs on the 5-0 Win. I dont like ontario teams, but they stopped the win streak and gave Brian Burke a nice win in these hard times.

-Halak it alot because the Price is right-

daveho29's picture

Agreed.

"All year in Hamilton we've been used to creating offence," Trotter said. "It's the same ice sheet here, so we just tried to do what we're good at. We didn't end up getting one tonight, but I think we created some momentum for the team."

They sure did. Those three together showed more in three periods then D'Ags has shown all season. Let's hope Habs management gives those kids a serious look next year. Sometimes good things come in small packages.

I was dead certain Trotter had scored in the 3rd with that nifty move thru the 5 hole in close. It hit the post, but that was a goal scorer's move.

Mattyleg's picture

Right on, DP.

But I have to say that it must be a helluvalot easier for three guys who normally play together to come up and play together in the NHL. No worries about deferring to the established players, no worries about keeping their jobs safe...

I agree totally that they played great. But I wonder if bringing them up one by one is such a good idea, considering...

dpthehabsfan's picture

Sure enough about bringing them up together..... but Desharnais and Trotter showed good puck sense. Hopefully JM will try the  the same experiment tomorrow.

At this point it can't hurt.

Wow Hamilton just keeps rolling along. There top forwards are all gone and they still keep on winning! Subban 6 points last 3 games.

christophor's picture

I was at the Bulldogs game tonight. Here are a few interesting things:

-Only 12 shots allowed by the Bulldogs; the Marlies' first was a goal but the next 11 were kept out; only 6 shots against with 10 minutes to go.

-43 shots for - Macdonald was good.

-Pacioretty looked average; he's still trying to find it, though he did show some flares of hope late in the game.

-P.K. set up Glumac twice in a matter of minutes; two VERY pretty passes: the first on the PP behind his back, across the face of the goal, and the second from his own zone, just past the reach of the Marlies' D, to Glumac's stick for a breakaway.

-Weber played, which was odd because I thought he was listed as scratched from the Habs and not sent down.

-Though the Dogs are far more skilled than the Marlies, they got pushed around a lot. It seems everyone in the Montreal organization is either small and very skilled or big and very unskilled. No hybrids.

-There was a bit of a mess between the benches after the final whistle and Boucher was losing it. fun to watch.

THEY HAVE TO PLAY HALAK TOMORROW AND TRADE PRICE ON MONDAY.

Chuck's picture

I'm sure that Bob will get right on that.

Tonight's outcome only confirms the old adage that it isn't the size of the player but his heart that counts. I hope the trio from Hamilton will stick around. A couple things seem clear to me. One, I hope to God we have seen the last of Matt D'Agostini in a Montreal Canadiens uniform. I did not believe an NHL player could make George Laraque look useful, but D'Agostini succeeded. Send him to Hamilton. Second, if I were Max Lapierre I would pull my head out of my sphincter to see the future clearly. I don't know what happened to him, but Lapierre's attitude is deplorable for someone who has little innate talent. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will see the spunk and desire tonight tomorrow against the Bruins.

Everybody knows its not the size of the wand, its the wizard who does the magic.

or for you fisherman out there!

Its not the size of the tackle, its how you wiggle your worm.

I think you're referring to the Mark Twain Quote,  "it's not the size of the dog, but the size of the fight in the dog."   I to hope the "kid" line sticks around...it seems that this team needed an effective 4th line all this time....it really seems to motivate the top 2 lines when you have a 4th line that gives it their all every shift....

the sad thing, Hippo, is that once MAB is healthy JM will put him back on the 4th line and will break the hard working clicking group. I don't believe in his ability to grab the good thing and keep it going. I was really hoping that Molsons were watching today's game and realize what Guy Boucher did with the "talent" handed to him by Timmins. And that perhaps Habs should give him a shot behind the bench rather than the dinosaur JM whose The System did jacks$it for us.

Da Hema's picture

It was so good to see a line on this team that finished their checks and caused problems for the opponent. Given MAB's comparatively low salary, he certainly can sit in the pressbox when healthy. I wouldn't mind seeing Lapierre join him there too.

G-Man's picture

The New Kid Line has played 1 game. Let's see what they bring tomorrow before every veteran gets traded, shall we? Last time I looked, JM let the team play like they are able.

Besides, Timo, it's tough to fire management when they're on a roll this week. Wait until they have trouble with Washington, then you can go hog wild like usual. :)

fine, fine...

matraque's picture

Why MAB is playing on the 4th lines anyways... He lost all his mojo since playing F.  Just put him back on D.

keepthefaith's picture

Holy crap i agree with this guy for once. JM sucks, Boucher has players playing the way you have to play when you dont have the top notch talent.  MAB was a perfect band aid but with everyone back healthy and these kids emerging ( i hope) he' expendable. Why not SK74 on the point on PP?  Why doesnt JM have him out their at all ?

bostonantifan's picture

One reason, (IMO, since I don't know what Martin is thinking), that Kostitsyn isn't on the point is that he doesn't have a great shot.  The shot MAB has is the only reason he's on the team.  He can blow it by a goalie, but lately all he's been doing is faking shots and passing back & forth.

G-Man's picture

He did break a Bruins leg the other day. That has to count for something.

Habscore's picture

Oh man! If he puts MAB on the 4th line, and send the kids back to the Ham...I swear I'll ......!!!!!

marshx's picture

big home and home series with the flyers!

so... who's starting tomorrow?

I hope there were no new injuries (except for Spatch) out of today's game. And they better come out a bit sharper against the B's than the last time.

lavie's picture

What's wrong with Spacek? I just didn't get it. Spacek has been playing decent games.

ooder's picture

dude... wishing for an injury is not cool.

oh whatever... as if anything I say actually happens. If it did, i'd be owning the habs right now and you can bet your house Bob Gainey wouldn't be the GM and JM wouldn't be coaching for me. I would keep MAB though... he is cool

ooder's picture

just saying... it's not very classy.

you are a classy guy... aren't you Timo? :)

I second that, but it has to be remembered that not everyone knows who Ali G. is. :)

daveho29's picture

Who's Ali G?

love the avatar...your dog is cute...

slapshot777's picture

I know that we have been complaining all season long about the teams play, our goalies, our top 6 forwards, our d-men, our coaches, and Bob Gainey.

Well we have 62 points with 59 GP with all of our injuries and all the other intangibiles that has made this season what it is so far.

Yet the Detroit Red Wings who "other " teams use as a model and a measuring stick to success, have only 64 points with 58 GP.

I know that they have injuries as well, but does that make Detroit's GM a bad GM for letting his team drop this far down the ladder in points? Does it make Detroits top 6 forwards suck? Does it make their d-men lazy and soft? Does it make Mike Babcock a bad coach who looks lost?

So when I look at Montreal compared to Detroit in the standings if it's fustrating for us just imagine how fustrating it must be for the Wings fans who by now usually see their team with 70+ points.

I feel that the Habs have been doing fairly well in the standings considering all the injuries to top 6 forwards and a top 4 d-man this season.

There you again with the logic.

smiler2729's picture

I agree with you but here, on Habs I/O, well... they eat their young. A win doesn't make any of 'em happy.

Crap! Rangers and Lightning won.

naweed235's picture

yes but Boston, Phili, Florida, Ottawa and NY Islanders all lost... not to mention we WON =D u cant always have everything right?

slapshot777's picture

Ak46 was said to miss 4-6 weeks with his knee injury, well now it's 5 weeks, I wonder has he started skating yet or how close is he to returning?

he's listed as out at least six weeks (he was earlier listed as out indefinitely)

ThirtyThree's picture

The non-NHL-ers were outstanding tonight. They had some real fire in their butts and it energized the whole team. Bravo boys!

Very solid performance by Halak. The team is coming together. Once they get 6 or 7 games above .500 they can actually start playing without a gun to their head. And boy do they deserve it. It seems like from the beginning of the season they've only had "must-win" games. It'll do them (and us!) some good to start having a little less pressure and a little more fun.

And now it's time to rip those bears a new one. GO HABS GO!

pmaraw's picture

lol, way to add more games with the gun to the head

maybe it was 75, not 25 games to gel.

slapshot777's picture

I know that Pouliot was injured, but what was the injury? I hope it wasn't his wrist again.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

Dennis's picture

Mathieu Darche's long minor league career reminds me of Johnny Bower's. Both played for years in the minors before grabbing a regular job in their 30's. Bower proved it's never too late. Great game for all concerned today. http://dennis-kane.com/

Eliisa's picture

I know I always watch the games so late, the joys of PVR. I can't believe that win! Amazing.

Darche was on tonight! And how about Trotter, Desharnais and White? I thought for sure one of them would find the back of the net (kept my fingers crossed for Trotter especially). They deserved all the ice time they were getting. I haven't seen that much fire in a long time. Canadiens definitely deserved this win. The Habs absolutely out played Pittsburgh. It would've been nice to score number 6 on that 5 on 3 though.

Also, another note. What is with PJ Stock? I hate complaining but when he was recapping the game he kept calling Fleury Luongo. Does this guy even follow hockey?

Oh! Can't forget to mention the chemistry between Gionta and Gomez (5 points between the two of them!) or our superstar number one netminder - Jaro Halak!

how is that you have 2 different pictures in this thread?

Edit: hnmmm... not anymore. nevermind.

Eliisa's picture

I am skilled. Nice "change" by the way Timo. Very creative ;).

I put a lot of effort into it.

andrewberkshire's picture

Stock is completely out to lunch. Great game though! I think we might see Desharnais or Trotter hit the twine tomorrow against the Bruins, especially if Tim Thomas plays.

He is completely out to lunch. It's incredible really. Can I have his job? Please? I definitely want to see more of that fourth line. I was very impressed. Any thoughts about the outcome against Boston?

slapshot777's picture

Have to laugh at CBC and Mclean and Cherry, they are talking about everyone who pretty well played tonight except for the Habs. If the Habs would have lost tonight though it would have been different. What a bunch of homers.

Man, I wanted Guy Boucher to go with the Marlies there at the end.  Almost a big brawl there . . almost.  They are great - or well coached - giving up a team record low 12 shots against the Baby Laughs.

wow and their best line was in the NHL, and it was againts the marlies!  and they dont have help coming with a #1 draft pick (marlies)

What a great day...we beat our nemesis the Junior Hurricanes...then watched the game on DVR...Nice to see the "Hamilton Bulldogs" beat the defending Cup champs!

White taking down Guerin was the highlight of the game...these kids have showed up to play...Maxime better watch his Ps and Qs or he'll be out of here...

Penguins are looking average all of a sudden...Sidney wasn't slapping anyone silly for a change...

What a great win...need to keep this momentum going into tomorrow and hand it to the Broons...

We need Halak tomorrow...he can rest over the Olympic break and he is hot...we need every point we can get...

Go Habs Go!!!

The great Mike Milbury on the hotstove thinks the Kovalchuk deal was a terrible, big loss for Atlanta. I'll just assume the exact opposite. In other words: Atlanta is the big winner in the deal and will lift the Stanley Cup in 2 years.

This coming from the guy who traded Luongo and Jokinen for Kvasha and Parrish.

The pot shouldn't ever call the kettle black. Milbury's an ***.
