Habs, Plekanec's agent talked during break

posted by Kevin Mio at 17h45 EST on Mar 1

According to a report on Ruefrontenac.com, Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier and the agent for Tomas Plekanec, Rick Curran, held discussions during the Olympic break on Plekanec's future in Montreal.

Gauthier used the talks to find out what Plekanec, who leads the team in scoring, was hoping to get in his next contract.

"We talked during the Olympic break and decided to talk again after the NHL trade deadline," Curran said.

Montreal will never do things like the Thrashers or the Panthers. Bob can't trade away our FA's. I can't see PG has what it take to do it. We'll be fighting for the 8th spot forever.

TRADE between Habs & Leafs! Youppi for Carlton the bear & a #1, 2010 zambonie driver!

Nick_Habs1's picture

Plecks....see you later man. You are not worth more then 4 mill per year.

Trade him for a #1 draft pick. Let the rebuild begin.

SO! Price starts tonight. If Price gos on a tear & wins five in a row, what do we do with Halak? JM can't sit his best goalie(Halak) of the season. Jm can't sit Price while being on a winning streak. The way I see it, one goalie suffers while the other one is hot!

"Don't worry, be Happy"

Nick_Habs1's picture

That's right man. There is no #1 in Montreal. Play who's hot. Look at the Sens....they are playing the "backup" because he's hot right now.

Xtrahabsfan's picture

This year the Habs were built with a large amount of smallish athletes as well as veterans ,putting into account that they would most certainly get injured and they would get 20 days to recoup due to the Olympics. Now the drive to the play-offs is on ,no trades have been done (so far) and we have a crappy team,again!Tabernac.....................

RetroMikey's picture

We are indeed a crappy team heading nowhere this season and for at least 3 more seasons signing players to fat lucrative contracts (Thanks Bobby, you blew the ship las summer!)

Well at least there are optimistic fans ion this site quite content to get 2 games at the Bell Centre if we squeak into the playoffs  and then make lame excuses saying "hey, we were at least in the in the playoffs, Toronto is not!"

What is Gauthier (and Bobby) waiting for?  Trade, trade, trade!

I don't know if this has already been asked but today on Sportscentre I saw that the Flyers put Lw Riley Cote on waivers and I was wondering if anyone thought it would be a good idea to pick him up?

This is just a random question I don't know the price of his contract or how many goals he's scored this year I'm about to go check that out, but I do know he's a "tuff guy" and probably more useful than BGL.

Unfortunately, he is a "punching bag".

coachdoug's picture

While he is not the best fighter he will stick up for teammates and has some skill and can skate well enough to keep up...might be an inexpensive experiment for a year since he would be coming off waivers...

"Vive le col roulé! Le système, C'est le col roulé!"

HabFanSince72's picture

Riley Cote's fighting style is to hurt the other guy's fists with your face.

The Cat's picture

I perhaps would do it but the habs wont. The JM philosophy is to take your lumps and sting em on the PP. Players that take penalties are benched with JM.

pmaraw's picture

funny theres not more guys benched being we're the highest penalty taking team in the nhl

SeriousFan09's picture

About half a million this year and next, 1 goal and 6 assists in 153 career NHL games. JM wouldn't like him though, so forget it, he'd be benched for getting rough.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

24moreCups's picture

Thanks for the update on his contract, but I wanna how you guys would feel about having him on our team not how JM wouldn't play him.

Just because I know we need some toughness on our team, and unlike BGL Cote won't always ask first to fight if I'm not mistaken and will usually stick up for his team mate regardless the oponet.

SeriousFan09's picture

He would stick up for our guys but I think about all the guys that just don't play tough under JM. Travis Moen was a hitting machine to start the season and jammed his way into goals, when's the last time he scored? JM just seems to take the fight OUT of people with his style. He could be a useful guy at his cap hit though if PG grabs him through waivers.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

Agree 100% about Jm taking the fight out of players. He did it in Ottawa.Cote would stick up for his team, but isn't really feared. It would be a good start though

HABZ24's picture

its obvious now that price was rushed too soon and givin the title as number one without earning it at the nhl level. we latandressed price. now if we give up on price we all know that with his background of junior gold metal and winning past he will prevail and be a patrick roy in the future.ok not that good but close.price needs ice time and plenty of it. fleury in pitts sucked the first few years ...now look at him.  halak has talent but i still think hes a number two playing waaaay over his head like huet did. halak wants to do what huet did get traded get  the number one job with number  one money. but huet eventually faded back to his normal level and now huets career could be done soon. like theodore huge money, big pressure, washed out.  untradeable too because of the huge dollar contract.have some sense gauthier trade halak who is a number two playing over his head, sign price for less and give price 65 games a year.

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

I said this before too, unless Price starts playing consistently like Halak, he won't be the no.1 goalie of this team. Halak has been the more successful goalie (both stats and no. of wins wise) and let's play him while he's hot!

Let's not trade either for now, and go with the hot hand. plus goaltending is not even this team's weakness it's 5 on 5 play and defense

king ddd's picture

price and p.k are to us what kane and toews are to hawks.. what getzy and perry are to aneheim..what staal&ward are for canes..what crosby&malkin for pits... carter&richards for philly...stamkos...well stamkos for tampa...o.v and and the rest of the bloody washington team.. MY POINT IS ..Price SHOULD NOT BE TRADED!!

.::moen & georges for co-captains::.

G-Man's picture

Price should be out of a Habs uni as soon as possible. Halak is a young #1 with top 5 numbers. Price has displayed nothing since the All Star game of '09. Thinking he's a cornerstone for the Habs is weird, since Halak has displayed over and over that he's a quality goalie.

What has Halak done so far in his career? What has he won? Montreal already screwed up big time by letting Roy go which may have cost them another 2 Cups. Montreal will not do that again! Price will stay in Montreal if Prices wants to stay in Montreal.

"Don't worry, be Happy"

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

Hey hey Halak is not 35, he's 24. He's a rising star as well! He should definitely be on the list and I don't want him traded either. Unless Price starts playing consistently like Halak, he won't be the no.1 goalie of this team. Don't get me wrong, Price is my favourite player, but I am saying what's best for the team. BUT goaltending is not the problem - Habs won't go anywhere until they improve their 5 on 5 play. Hopefully that improves with all the injured players back...minus Cammalleri and Bergeron.

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

We have 19 games left. Let's hope we finish with more than 12 wins...or else..no playoffs.

Post-Olympic Habs : 0-0-0

Price - 8-2

Halak - 5-4

EricInStL's picture

Not really, just saying Price has an opportunity to play and shine. It's his opportunity to take.

To me the key is what does Guy Boucher think of Desjardins. If he says the kid is a go then don't be surprised to see either Price or Halak get traded if Gauthier gets a great offer. Chicago anyone ????

In Guy Boucher I trust.

andrewberkshire's picture

I didn't mean to call you out specifically or anything Eric, I'm just joking around. That said I think the Hawks are very interested in Halak. He looks like a gamebreaker right now, which they do not have in goal.

EricInStL's picture

I know that Andrew, I was just bringing back to the top of the list. It's a great opportunity for him, but will he make the best of it.

I still think his future is out west. Edmonton would be a great fit, especially if you can get a #1 out of them, but Price's value is lower than Halak right now. But Edmonton's #1 is juicy stuff.. They are going to sell sell sell....

In Guy Boucher I trust.

andrewberkshire's picture

I have a feeling that if Price goes anywhere, it'll be NJ. He's the perfect guy to take over for Brodeur, and they have absolutely zilch in the cupboard for goalies.

Fire PG?

Fire JM?

Not enough Quebecers on the team?

Choose a captain?

Gomez is too expensive?

Etc...

The list goes on!

EricInStL's picture

In due time the Molsons will decide after the season.

Fire PG ? Gie him some slack, lets see what he'll do at the deadline or not do.

Fire JM, make the playoffs stay, lose and... well he'll get a second chance...

Quebecers ? It would help is some would like to play over here, but if you have a chance to get a top of the line player then you must at least try. Don't over pay, but try.

Captain, we'll it goes without saying, but it says a lot about what management thinks of certain players that are NOT captain by now....

Gomez too expensive ? Gas is too expensive, but then again people pay 2.00 $ for a bottle of water...

Etc, love it.....

In Guy Boucher I trust.

Now is the time to move up in the standings....

Boston had a couple of players in the Olympics, so we can go after them and win it as they'll be still reeling.

Now is the time for Price to take over. With Halak probably bummed out for the next week or so, he has the opportunity to shine. If he doesn't take it. He'll never make it in Montreal. He cannot lose tomorrow. It's as simple as that.

In Guy Boucher I trust.

Clay4bc's picture

So Halak proves himself one of the elite goalies in the world, and you say it's time for Price to take over. You aree dreaming in techincolour, my friend. Halak is the number one goalie on this team.

The elite goalie who allowed 3 goals against Norway or dropped a 3-1 lead for his team in the Bronze Medal game? The two elite goalies coming out of the Tournament were Luongo and Miller.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

usversusthem's picture

I think you mean Miller and Hiller. Luongo only needed to be good for Canada to win Gold. Hiller needed to be fantastic for Switzerland not to get destroyed in every game, and he was. The fact that it took an empty net goal for the U.S. to beat them 2-0 in the Quarters says a lot, to me. If Hiller had been playing for a team with any offensive weapons, you have to figure they would have spoiled quite a few Olympic dreams.

SeriousFan09's picture

True enough, Hiller was quite something in nets, full credit to him.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

crabvader's picture

He still beat two elite teams in Sweden and Russia. I think he showed up against the tough teams but kind of got sidetracked against the weaker ones. His team also seemed to play the same way.

EricInStL's picture

Did you get the feeling that Luongo had MAJOR problems catching the puck ?

He seemed to fight the puck most of the time.

I still say  Fleury would have been the best choice, but hey we won, so it's moot.

But Luongo was still fighting it.

Guy Boucher I trust.

teamplayer's picture

Don Cherry was on sportsnet and cherry was saying how it looked like luongo was fighting the puck becuase he may have had new equipment. Sportsnet guy said that Luongo had new pads for the tourney... dont know about his glove but yeh lu was nothing spectacular but he was solid enough

SeriousFan09's picture

Fleury will likely need to go deep in the playoffs a couple more times to cement his status. His WJC 2004 gaffe is still following him around for International play.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

EricInStL's picture

You can add Brodeur... He didn't look too thrilled did he ?

In Guy Boucher I trust.

EricInStL's picture

Sorry I have no interest in either Halak or Price. But in a dog eat dog world of Professional hockey, if there's an opportunity to shine and to get back in the good graces of the team, you have to take it. Yes Halak should be the #1, but he probably won't play the next 2 games. Why not win them and make it easier to get traded (if Price is unhappy to be in MTL), that's a big IF..... but not entirely impossible.

In Guy Boucher I trust.

Clay4bc's picture

Sorry, but I do have an interest in Hakak and Price...that interest is that I want the Montreal Canadiens to win as many games as possible, and they are the two goalies on the team. In that light, I want Halak to play, as he is by far and away the better goalie of the two.

EricInStL's picture

You know, I truly believe that Desjardins will be in the NHL next year, replacing one of the 2. There is a very good chance that a trade will be done at the draft.

Halak might even be delt if they get great value. If Chicago wants to go far they should go after him.

In Guy Boucher I trust.

CanadienBoy's picture

check out story on Parise dad being a menber off the summit serie 1972.

Can someone please explain to me what happened between the breezer and hartley?

Olympic observations: Best team won, unfortunately for us. Habs had zero medal winners, closest was Saku's Finns. It's not a coincidence that the two North American teams played for gold. And I hated Milbury as a player and coach, but his Euro trash comment regarding some of the russians was bng on. He was talking hockey, not cultural. I'd put the Kosti sisters and Markov in that category, they are immensely talented but are not winners. Markov for captain is a friggin joke.Move all 3 and get some hockey players back. Pleks,Hamr,Spacek, and halak don't fall into that category.

ooder's picture

hockey has evolved and the europeans bring much more to the table than you like to give them credit for.

unfortunately you, Don Cherry, Mike Milbury all didn't get the memo.

Markov is not a winner lol, ok.... one of the best d-men in the league on a piss poor defensive team.

Carries dead weight with him like Souray and Komisarek (but they are born here so I guess they get a pass right?).

I guess Sergie Fedorov is euro trash to, and Gonchar, and Malkin (the winner of the Conn Smythe trophy) are all euro trash as well.

SK74 had a great tournamen on a team that has no skill. Ak46 is a beast physically and skill wise.

but i guess there last names aren't Smith or Johnson so they are no good

------------------

"enough said" is never enough said

Kosti is one of the most gutless players in the league considering his talent. He 's a copy of Andrei Kovalenko. As for the Euro trash comment,I see the usual PC crowd has their panties twisted. The Habs played like Euro trash in their two games vs. the Flyers before the break. Pleks,Spacek,Halak and Hamr DON'T play like that. Markov and the Kostis do.

CanadienBoy's picture

Well well Ovecchkin today said Canada was the better team and was happy for Crosby to score the winning goal ,i take this euro trash on the habs anytime

SeriousFan09's picture

The Russians didn't win because their team was not up to par, KHL players were selected ahead of politics rather than who was best suited to play for the Russian national team. It was an insulting term to use that he got away with because biotry towards European players is an accepted practice with the old-boys club of NHL knuckle-draggers and the Cult of Don Cherry. Calling European players the 'sisters' just identifies you as another of those cranks.

Sergei Kostityn posted 2 goals and 3 assists in his 4 Olympic games at the Tournament, Andrei Kostitsyn couldn't play due to injury and Markov was playing injured. Markov has played internationally before and done well, he has kept this team going for many years when they should've failed. He has playing through a year where is trying to recover from sliced tendons in his foot and that's messed up his skating and it's obvious and right now a back injury, we're not seeing him at his best right now, or close to it really.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

crabvader's picture

Nobody ever seems to take in account the fact that Markov started playing early... About 2 months early.

Did he REALLY recover that fast or did he want to play and help the team out?

ooder's picture

can't be that.. he's European remember... the whole "no hear thing".

man don't you ever listen to Don Cherry, Milbury and Marinaro

------------------

crabvader's picture

Lol, good old douche bags.

ooder's picture

I think coaching had to do more with it than anything.

Look at it this way. The best Russian players all play here...Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk ....

The Canadaian management had great scouting on those players and knew how to shut them down.

The Russian management team didn't come over seas and watch the best Canadian players so they had no clue what to expect.

Canada knew it's enemy... Russia didn't.

I don't htink adding Kovalev or Frolov or whoever would have changed the outcome...
