Halak, Bergeron take a breather

posted by Pat Hickey at 13h11 EST on Mar 2

Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak and Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron are both getting the opportunity to relax a bit after playing in the Vancouver Olympics.

Halak, who arrived in Boston last night after flying from Vancouver to Montreal, was allowed to sleep in today and skipped the morning skate. He will be in uniform tonight but only as Carey Price's backup. Bergeron, who was part of Canada's gold-medal effort on Sunday, aggravated a groin injury in the final and is listed as day-to-day.

Defenceman Paul Mara and forward Matt D'Agostini will be healthy scratches tonight. D'Agostini will be replaced on the fourth line by Tom Pyatt.

With Emery's season done, one of Philly's big guns might be available for Price and change.

NO. One of Philly's big guns isn't available....lol. This deadline is becoming laughable with these fake habs rumors.

Stop dreaming people please....it makes us look really you know what.

Doubt it. Leighton's won his last 4 and hasn't allowed more than 2 goals in his last 6. Don't think they'd offer what we'd need to make that deal when they've already decided on a number 1.

Mike T's picture

Leighton is just another mediocre goalie who will force the team to crumble. It's high time the Flyers made a push for a legit #1...Halak and change for Carter

Mike T's picture

Halak and change ;)

pmaraw's picture

Price and Halak and change :o

it's sad that hab fans get so excited every year at trade deadline, and then absolutely nothing happens. So I don't give it a 2nd thought. I'm expecting the usual: NOTHING!

remember than Gauthier is a Gainey clone, so stop waiting . you'll all be disappointed.

TripleX's picture

I really have to agree.  Another trade deadline will pass with the Habs doing nada.  The biggest change will be the signing of Pleks IF it happens.  Next season we will have 14 players signed at 45 million.  How do we sign Pleks, Price and Halak?

As for trades, someone else has to want what you are selling.  What do we have?  Hammer and his 5.5 million a year?  Mara, Gill and O'byrne?  Please.

The only assets we have are Halak and Price because they are talented, young and RFA's.  Do I see Gauthier as the type to make a big splash?  He is another Bob....Mr. slow and stay the course.  And when Bob panicked and made a splash....well we all know how that worked out.

Exactomundo....

Other teams always have better packages than us, and their GM's are always more willing to gamble more than ours...

Also, you can argue all you want but MOST players don't want to come play here. It's the sad truth, so we should be happy we got Cammy this year.

Mike T's picture

theres no way this happens...LA won't trade their captain at this point

CanadienBoy's picture

just talk for now  but La will make a move

Mike T's picture

I make that trade in a HEARTBEAT

Neither goalie should get moved . I thought they should have most of the year but we won't get fair value for either one unless we pkg one with some players. Also i don't feel confident in either being able to handle a 60 game starting load.Keep them for another year or two and see if one emerges. Also if Pleks isn't signed today he must be moved for something.

Ron Wilson, the man whose most famous tactic is to say out loud that his players are crap and they should be better, is getting on Canada's case for discussing Martin Brodeur's performance during the 2010 Games. Which I guess means he was really angry we didn't use an over-the-hill goalie whose best years were behind him for that Gold Medal Game. Called Brodeur the best of all time to further help sell his sour grapes that he isn't in fact mad that we didn't use him.

He also mentioned how the puck bouncing off the ref helped Crosby get the winning goal. I guess the master of using video in coaching didn't examine his offside goal in that game too carefully...

How about this little figment of my imagination?

Columbus badly needs a goalie -- both their netminders are near the bottom of the league in terms of GAA and save%.  They also need a centre -- Vermette and Umberger are no 1st-liners, and Brassard has a ton of promise but is having a terrible season. They also have cap space, have no big-money guys to re-sign next year, and will never attract big-name free agents.

Montreal needs defense, a centre, toughness, cap space and youth.

So how about...

Price, Gomez and Lapierre to Columbus for Brassard, Klesla and Jared Boll?

We get to try to perform a Pouliot-style turnaround on two former 1st-rounders who have been so-so, and if just one of them reaches his full potential he'll be a star.  We also get a potential diamond in the rough: an enforcer who scored in junior but was rushed to the NHL to fill out a lousy Columbus team, and whose game has become one-dimensional as a result.  And crucially for us, we get cap space.

Columbus gets a potential franchise goalie, a really good playmaking centre who can probably add 15 goals a year to Nash's goal tally, and a good defensive forward on a team that desperately needs to keep pucks out of its net.

Disclaimer: I'm dealing Price here and not Halak only because although they're about equal in terms of skill, Price is the 1st-rounder with the big name, the big CV and the most trade potential.  The way I see it, I'd rather have Halak and what we can get for Price, rather than Price and what we can get for Halak.

Discuss!

SeriousFan09's picture

Jackets G Steve Mason is in his 2nd season and is a former Calder Trophy winner, they won't be throwing him aside just yet, he was getting better following Hitchcock's dismissal. Never seen anything from Brassard to sell me that he's Top 2 centre material honestly and Colombus is notorious for making bad choices when drafting considering where they get to draft from, excepting Nash of course.

Steve Mason and Carey Price?

-Halak it alot because the Price is right-

cautiousoptimist's picture

Yup -- Mason is 16-19-6 this year with a an .897 save percentage and a 3.08 GAA -- near-worsts in the league.  He has loads of potential too, and if he starts to show that last year wasn't a fluke, Columbus can deal either one of its inexpensive stud goalies for a nice return.  Until then though, they can't just keep losing.

As of 26 minutes ago the Blues faxed Bob Mckenzie and told him that Boyes wasn't available so.....

pmaraw's picture

re read it please

TSNBobMcKenzie Have not heard that but Boyes is available as per Blues fax. $4M cap hit stiff for underperformer.

he says "is available"  not "is not available"

TomNickle's picture

Semantics pal.  Take a pill.  Haven't heard that Boyes is available per Blues fax means that they faxed him saying he wasn't available.

pmaraw's picture

wow, you even re read it and got it wrong, kk no help for you I suppose.  and its not semantics, its grammar and the word but.  just because you rewrite what bob said, and remove the word but, does not make you right.

TomNickle's picture

I apologize, I did read it incorrectly.

pmaraw's picture

either way, you're just another awesome habs fan like the rest of us here

Just in case you missed it. McKenzie was replying to this: "Mtl after Boyes?"

Now add what Bob said and you'll see he never said he was faxed that Boyes is not available.

Just sayin'.

I heard back in 2000 when Luongo played with the Panthers...or maybe it was the Islanders....anywho Luongo was almost dealt to Calgary for Derek Morris straight up.But the Flames G.M. at the time nixed the deal....lol.....its true it almost happened. What a steal that would have been for the Flames,eh?

TripleX's picture

I think that is accurate as I heard the similar thing on Fan960 in Calgary recently.

my pic is hotter than your pic

Mine is my GF....is that yours?  As far as which is hotter I suppose it is up to individual.  My GF is plenty hot for me.

why would u post a pic of ur GF on a public thread as ur avatar? lol

TripleX's picture

Do you know her?  Do you know her name or where she lives?

Big deal, unless you are a potential stalker.  Maybe you have some underlying problem with it but I don't.  More importantly my GF approved the pic so obviously she has no problems with it either.

At least I have her permission.  Did you get permission to post your pic?

naweed235's picture

you know what would be great?  Price + Gomez for Datsyuk  ... I would even give some draft picks... Detroit would be the perfect place for price and Datsyuk would be a great addition to our team... well to any team when u think about it :0)

naweed235's picture

funny lol... just after i said that i read this on Bob mackenzie's tweet:

"predictions that could make me look foolish but I will say them anyway: Mtl will not trade a goalie, Detroit will be quiet at the deadline."

Cardiac's picture

There's just one problem... that would mean Pierre Gauthier is smarter than Ken Holland.

DONJUAN's picture

Were stuck with gomez face the facts.

cautiousoptimist's picture

I think there are some GMs out there who'll take him off our hands for the right return.  Detroit is deep at center, but something along the lines of Price, Gomez and a 2nd would be a fair return for a Datsyuk-level player.  And inflated salary or not, Gomez really is an excellent second-line center.

Carey Price's condo in the Old Port is on sale! Let's start speculating!

"I gotta a feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night!"

This is old. His place was on the market last season. I rmb seeing this condo on MLS.

Redlight Racicot's picture

Probably just means he is moving in with Bob Gainey :)

mike g's picture

It is now illegal for all Montrealers to sell their houses...If they do it must mean they're moving to another city. Nobody moves into bigger or different houses anymore....(sigh).

That's just pathetic. Whether you like the guy or not, for the french CBC to report it the way they are, it's disgusting. Being a Habs fan is becoming really sad man...

"These head movies make my eyes rain" -Simple Jack

I wouldn't put it past Carey to do this as a practical joke lol.  Put his condo on the market a day before the deadline just to make people speculate.

Remember 2 years ago when he showed up to a press conference before the playoffs with a cast on his leg?

Say Ash's picture

pretty sparse looking, no? he's into minimalism?

TomNickle's picture

It's a $750k hotel room man.  Seriously, how often do you think he's there?

TomNickle's picture

Anything less than a high first round pick, a good young roster player and highly touted prospect isn't enough for either goaltender.  If he trades either one it may define his career.

cautiousoptimist's picture

It doesn't matter if we trade one goalie and he lights it up somewhere else.  What matters is that we can't spend $6M on our goalies next year, which is what they're worth.  Whether we deal one now or over the summer is anybody's guess, but it just doesn't make sense to have one of our goalies making $3M to sit on the bench every game when we're sorely lacking in good defensive defensemen and physical scoring forwards.  That's just a misallocation of resources.

  1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
  2. Mike Boone: "With Gainey at my side, I'd walk into any dark alley in the world."

TomNickle's picture

It's a good dilemma to have but I don't see the problem in signing them both to longterm $3 million deals each and seeing who comes out on top.  The Ducks just took on Toskala so it isn't like one can't be moved later.  As for the big physical forward thing you're right but we can't acquire more defensemen without sending some away. With O'Byrne and Subban in the lineup we're a much better team.  We need to fill out our depth positions and you can do that through free agency and minor deals.

Can anyone say Luongo to Florida because you drafted Dipietro?

Halák je veľké dieťa, ktoré ešte saje matkiných cecku. Oh yeah? Carey Price je veľrybí tuk, ktorý kričí ako opilec

TomNickle's picture

Exactly what chronic health problems has Price had?

mike g's picture

Tom, it's the most rediculous time of year in the hockey world. People crap out rumors and dumb trades from their mouths and keyboards.

It's frustrating if you are a logical fan, like I try my best to be. But hey, If Price's house is for sale, he must be traded guaranteed. Afterall, that house Lecavalier built here last summer is where Vinny lives now, with his Habs jerseys hung up. Anyways.....

"These head movies make my eyes rain" -Simple Jack

TomNickle's picture

It must be too far fetched to come to the understanding that we have assets on the big club and the farm.  We're right in the middle of the pack when it comes to prospects and NHL rosters(which is both good and bad) but one thing that I'm thankful for in Gainey's tenure is that he didn't mortgage the future for guys like Hossa, Marleau, etc.  and also that he didn't trade away the good young talent that we have for a a 1st or 2nd round pick every year.  There's something to be said for staying the course.

As far as Wolski and Mueller go.  I would give up a roster player and a prospect(not named Subban or Desjardins) for either of them.

Cardiac's picture

Is that Komi chugging a drink in the first photo? Everyone is looking at him like he's about to ralph.

ya man.

Cardiac's picture

Minnesota signs Marek Zidlicky for three years at $4 mil a year.  Great shut-down defenseman with some offensive upside. Habs could have used someone like that.

TomNickle's picture

Don't you mean good offensive defenseman with some defensive upside?

Cardiac's picture

Probably... either way he's better than 3/4 of our defensive corps.
