The Canadiens made a deal overnight but it was hardly a blockbuster.

The Habs gave up on Matt D'Agostini, sending the underachieving forward to the St. Louis Blues for minor-leaguer Aaron Palushaj.

D'Agostini had a breakthrough season in 2008-09 with 12 goals but had only two goals and seven assists in 40 games this season. He was a healthy scratch for five of the team's past 13 games and also spent three games in the minors during that stretch.

The 20-year-old Palushaj is a project at best. He was an all-American at Michigan but had ordinary numbers with Peoria of the AHL. The  6-foot, 183 pounder had five goals and 17 assists in 44 games and is headed to Hamilton.

The deal doesn't do much for the Canadiens vis-à-vis the salary cap because D'Agostini is a minimum-wage player with a $500,000 salary. More on Palushaj, read below:

Shout-out to SeriousFan09 for these notes:

From Hockey's Future:

Analysis: Palushaj boasts a good all-around game. He can snipe goals with his quick shooting, and his stickhandling and playmaking abilities are also strong. He doesn't mind physical play, willing to dig in the corners to win the puck.
Future: Scoring winger.

Full Junior/College/AHL stats can be found here.

A 2008 interview, when Palushaj was a freshman at Michigan.

A feature from the 2009 NHL prospects camp.

Blues training camp marred by injury

Notes: He scored 23 goals and a total of 94 points in 82 games in two NCAA seasons at the University of Michigan in the same two years he played with current member of the organization Max Pacioretty so he may rediscover some chemistry with his old Michigan eammate. Good numbers as NCAA hockey is generally low-scoring compared to the CHL leagues. Ranked 4th overall on the St. Louis Blues prospect chart by Hockey's Future.

2006-07: Palushaj played in the USHL with Des Moines. He was one of the Buccaneers' top scorers, with 22 goals and 45 assists. He maintained his strong pace in the league playoffs, registering 11 points in eight games.

2007-08: This was Palushaj’s rookie season with the University of Michigan (CCHA). He was a CCHA All-Rookie team honorable mention. In the nation, he was second in assists (34) and tied for ninth in assists per game (0.79). Among the nation’s rookies, he was third in points (44) and sixth in pointer per game (1.02). In CCHA play, he led the league with 21 assists. He led U-M with 34 assists and was third on the team with 44 points. He was the first U-M rookie to reach the 40-point mark since T.J. Hensick (46) in the 2003-04 season. He tallied a career-high three assists twice this season and 12 multi-point games. He was a two-time CCHA Rookie of the Week (Nov. 12 and Feb. 18) and tallied two game-winning goals on the season. He scored his first career goal vs. Boston University of Oct. 26. He was the recipient of the Ralph and Susan Garlick Scholarship for Men’s Ice Hockey.

Just heard that Palushaj is in Hamilton but is not dressed for tonight's game.

I like the trade.  Dags had lots of opportunity to stake a claim on the Habs...he not only dropped the ball, he kicked it out of the arena.  This was a nothing to lose trade. Especially if, as mentioned elsewhere in these posts, by Marc C, it was probably Timmins who called it, based on Palushaj's past as a former linemate of Pacioretti, who Timmins saw, when he was scouting Pacioretti.  On that alone, I like it even better. I'll be seeing the kid here in Hamilton. BTW, Boucher is going to be a great NHL coach when he makes the jump and, takes his key Dogs along for the ride. Yikes! MacGuired just called Palusaj an energy guy, not a scorer. on TSN. Just what the Habs need?

doug19's picture

Well I think Dags had to clear waivers to be sent down so they traded for someone who is on the farm. Too bad the system does nor allow for slower development. Dags needed to go somewhere to improve his game. He did not seem to accomplish much for his effort this year. Last year he was good when he came up, then Laps was a much better player last year also.God luck to all!

I like Palushaj's Numbers I think he'll fit in nicely  and hopefully get some chemistry with pacioretty but when are they going to adress the  centermn issue is what concerns me we need another top six forward

Come on guys, Dags is going to turn into another carter in 3 years. This is a big mistake on the part of the habs. They need to think into the future.

haha, good one....er, I mean, bad one....

You're right... by the way, how is Chris Higgins these days?

I like this move, we needed to get D'ags out of here.

After this blockbuster, I hope the parade is being planned down the usual route.

Nice news story on Palushaj's transition to the pros here:

www.globe-democrat.com/news/2010/jan/30/blues-prospect-palushaj-making-t...

I really like this trade. According to reports, Palushaj was one of the last cuts for the Blues this year. Maybe this trade also helps Pacioretty get his game back on track.

D’Ags for Aaron Palushaj……looks like a decent move. Palushaj, at 5’11”, is again on the small side (what else is new), but he has some really good numbers in his two years playing D-1 with Michigan. It’s obvious to me that he turned pro a bit too early. Only two years of college hockey, as opposed to the full four years, and jumping to the pro ranks immediately following that second season of D-1. Two more years of college hockey would have done him much better, IMO. The hope is that Boucher can fine tune him in Hamilton and I think there is great potential there. We lose D’Agostini in the deal. Something that was going nowhere anyway. This deal could be a homerun down the road, or it could be buried and forgotten in two years. Bottom line is, this deal won’t hurt us. Thumbs up.

Why do I get the feeling Aaron needs work on his skating ?

Since he had a Markov done on him, his foot got cut by a skate, hopefully the injury is not permanent....great another great potential player derailed by a skate cut, requiring years and years of tender loving care at Brossard....oh no, Pierre Gauthier's School of washed up veterans and hurt rookies opens its doors again, the Montreal Canadiens, the UNICEF of the NHLPA!

So the clowns on RDS get it right

Its pronounced Palu shy.

Coach Martin say's one.....one little forward...two....two lit..

Maybe I'm just sentimental, but I hate when it doesn't work out for a Hab.

D'ags may have fallen apart, but I wish it could've all worked out. He wore the CH.

Same here. I'm not a fan of trading drafted players who have practicallty just started here. Funny how some players have a longer leash than others.

I think D'Agostini was given a fair chance, and did not grab the opportunity....they have too many prospects that look better, honestly....wish him well.

smiler2729's picture

Latendresse sure had a long leash and he slept his way outta town too. D'Ags' 2 goals and 2 assists in 40+ games was just BRUTAL

smiler2729's picture

What the HELL happened to Matt D'Agostini anyway????

longtimehabsfan's picture

His overall game wasn't solid.  After his early scoring splash died out his lack of overall game was exposed.  Mayber Lever ruined him; maybe he wasn't ready for the NHL; maybe he couldn't play in Montreal's pressure cooker.  Look at Pouliot.  When he doesn't score he does other things that are so valuable.  Look at the guys in the Olympics.  Crosby, Nash, Toews, etc.  They didn't tear up the score sheet but it was obvious just how many other things they brought to the game.  Daggs wasn't traded because of his lack of production only.  He wasn't doing much else, either. And if Daggs lights it up in St. Louis -- good for him.

Never the same after that concussion...

XXIV...and counting

Great, we trade a concussed rookie for an injured skate cut rookie!

Not strong or nasty enough yet to play any consistent role in the nhl. His enthusiasm got him a few goals last year against tired opposition but that is not enough to fight off 230 pound D-men. He should watch video of Gionta, Iginla, Jamie whatshisbummer...

But, Timo said D’Agostini had NO value even for FREE?

Gotta love this trade. D’Agostini was eligible to waivers and a RFA at the end of the year, also he was in the dog house, rightfully so. The scouting report for Ralushaj reads…good play maker with high level individual skills and competitiveness…great passing ability…plays a brave and feisty game, willing to get under opponents skin, plays much larger than size (6-185)…strong two way game, great puck pursuit…needs to improve upon his skating, first step quickness…overall as strong skating fundamentals…line mates with Pacioretty at MichiganU…top 150 NHL prospect. (some info used from McKeen's Hockey).

A great future value move for the team, Ralushaj can continue work on this game in the AHL (44-5-17), D'Agostini while still having some promise needed a chance of teams as he has clearly been past by a half dozen young players. A good hockey trade by both teams and I'd give PG and solid B to B+ on this deal.

Good news! No offense to him, but D'Ags was dead weight.

"love cannot drown truth, Nefertiti"

avatar_58's picture

Remind me again why I'm not suppsed to hate this GM. No idea what this move was supposed to accomplish except further the idea that the habs can't develop their own talent.

danedmunds's picture

well dags has no talent so it's hard to develop something that does not exist

avatar_58's picture

Call me in a year when he's putting up numbers for someone else. Giving up after one season is a habs trademark! I can't wait till we ship PK Subban away if he has a lull season.

Neither of these things will happen....

avatar_58's picture

How's Lattendresse doing?

Bookmark your answer for next year, and then I'll ask YOU that question....wait and see, you're seeing his absolute best now, and it won't last.

solsub's picture

"when he's putting up numbers for someone else"

Given the way D'Ags plays, that just won't happen. Don't get me wrong, I hate to see our home-grown talent not develop itself into something useful. The fact of the matter is that you just can't ignore the way D'Ags has been playing since after those 6 first few games last season where he was cruising.

He's not cut out to play in this league.

mrhabby's picture

getting rid of a fringe player for a player who has more possible upside. very little risk sounds okay by me.

But what does Pierre McGuire have to say about him???

Pierre who?

About time D'Ags gets dumped, I've been saying since seeing him for 25  games, that he wasn't NHL material.

linp's picture

Hope that he is in BullDogs's lineup tonight. Can't wait to check him out.

Smart little move. hockeyfutures.com has Palushaj ranked considerably higher than D'ags. He is under contract for 2 more years and was a teammate of Pacioretty at Michigan two years ago.

Darche has just been told that he has earned a spot with the team and no roster moves will need to be made to accommodate Cammalleri when he returns.

Very smart little move. Could look great in two years.

So far so good for Gauthier on the trade front. Relatively minor stuff, but no glaring gaffes.

Harani's picture

D'Agostini 1.0? (6'0, shoots right) The only move for today or only the beginning? And another name for the RDS guys to massacre.

And interesting note, he was a UMichigan teammate of Pacioretty in '07-'08. Now we know Trevor Timmins called for this.

"I gotta a feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night!"

Good call Harani! Timmins had to have played a roll in this trade. This is a guy that they saw a lot while follow-up scouting Pacioretty. On a side note Palushaj was the 44th pick in the 2007 draft, but who was the 43rd pick? None other than P.K. Subban.

CanadienBoy's picture

has play with kristo as well at wold

Great Timmins continues the Gainey/Gauthier experiment to see whether small players in the NHL could actually win a stanley cup...
