• BILINGUAL AUDIO: Pierre Gauthier
• Habs didn't have much room to move: Hickey
• Idle trade-day GM Gauthier prepared to live with what he's got: Stubbs
• Much ado about nothing: Fisher
Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier, VP hockey operations Julien BriseBois and head coach Jacques Martin spent the day in Boston working the phones, as much as they did, but didn't see anything worth moving on as the NHL's trade deadline came and went.
Gauthier told the Montreal media by teleconference just now that the message he sends to his club is that any success the team is to achieve this season will come from within, a refrain heard last season when Gauthier's predecessor, Bob Gainey, didn't make any moves on deadline day.
Gauthier maintained that his two young goalies, Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak, are keys to the team's success this season. He added that he's satisfied with the talks he's had thus far to keep Tomas Plekanec with the organization beyond this year.
Apologies for the quality of the audio, which was less than superior at source.

Wow, I thought that this was a Hab site? Seems the Leafs are the hilite here too...ha! ha!
You losers are so focussed upon a re-building, youth oriented team that you have lost interest in the Habs!
Of course how could anyone get interested in the Habs? Doomed to years of mid-pack mediocrity.
Pierre made no moves on a team sitting on the bubble and waiting for some magical 'gelling' or 'chemistry' to suddenly vault them to respectability?
Get your books out on Alchemy Pierre, you've got a big problem!
Your diminutive players that are also short on talent will not turn into Gold or a Cup run anytime soon.

Burke is a loudmouthed risk-taker who never met a camera and microphone he didn't love. He's just covering his *** about the Kessel trade. Can't wait to see his face when Boston picks Hall or Seguin at the Draft in June!
I'm new to the site so bear with me. Burke is a complete idiot, Leafs are looking at another 43 years at which point I'll be dead!
I agree Peterbourgh, stay off the dark side and come into the light with most of us. You will get to know who is out to lunch here. Welcome aboard.

Response from Brian Burke when asked if he regretted the Phil Kessel trade:
"I would be happy if [Bruins GM] Peter Chiarelli got either [Tyler] Seguin or [Taylor] Hall," Burke said, in reference to the likely top-two picks in June's draft. "The best trades are those that benefit both teams, and, in our case, we got a 21-year-old kid in Kessel who scored 37 goals in the National Hockey League.
"Like I said, I'd do it again."
Gee Burkey - would you drive a nail through your head? Answer: "You bet I would. I'd do it again and again"
http://www.nesn.com/2010/03/brian-burke-expresses-no-regret-in-phil-kess...
-- Don't Look at Detroit! --
The Tronna media is all gung ho over Burke's moves yesterday. He bet on the future, don't youy know. Building with prospects.
As far as I can tell he only got one guy, Luca Caputi, who might never even play last in the NHL.
He says that now, but anyone else looking forward to a shot of Burke's expression when Boston selects Hall or Seguin in the 2010 draft?
Kessel's a good sniper, one can't deny that but he also had all those goals on a really overachieving Boston team.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
I don't see what's so wrong with that. Taylor Hall might need a couple of years to develop into the superstar he's been tagged as. Kessel on the other hand is a proven sniper with 41 points in only 50 games. It's all relative... do you want to start building around a superstar now or later?
Kessel is one-dimensional and when that one dimension isn't working he's not good. He's a younger Michael Ryder.
Also he is a locker room cancer.
41 points in 50 games comes out to about 67 points over 82 games. I don't think that's the kind of production you're hoping for out of 2 first rounders and a second. Don't get me wrong, I think that Kessel is a great player, I just don't think he's a centrepiece to build around. I see him as more of a Semin to Ovechkin - a great player who could reach his full potential if there were a genuine superstar around to take some heat off.
The problem is that they have nothing to build around Kessel with, so a superstar in a few years from now, when they will have much more assets is the choice to make.
If goes beyond that. Not only are they losing out on a good prospect this year, they're losing out on their first round pick again next year as well.
Goalie tonight?
It should be Price, but as soon as he loses or get a bad night, it's back to Halak.

Komisarek: 0 - 4 - 4 (-9) http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8469460
you have to start price. since the olympic break he has 1.00gaa. pretty simple to me:-p
JM likes to wait until practice to call these things but I'm betting Price is likely in after the Boston win. He doesn't like to mess with a goalie who collected a win in their last game, but at the same time, be surprised unless Price picks up a pair of strong wins on Thursday/Saturday to play Sunday, JM doesn't like doing back-to-back games with his goalies.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
clear as mud
Why should any part of the JM System make sense? Although I here he plans to have the team wear special jerseys that look like Olmpic uniforms to neutralize Thornton and Heatley.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
I think having someone from the Montreal media telling Thornton and Marleau that tonight is a "big game" is enough...They might even ask the coach to be healthy scratches.
In all fairness, I think Heatley, Marleau and Thornton all had good tournaments - except Thornton
Heatley is the second highest scoring Canadian in international hockey behind Gretzky.
Yeah Heatley always comes through in world class hockey, like every year he's a top scorer
World Championship hockey that is, truly World Class hockey just went on for 2 weeks and the two competitions are nowhere near the same. The IIHF World Championships feature B or even C team talent, we had Dwayne Roloson as the starting goalie for Canada after all.
It's a B-Tournament, everyone knows it, which is why so many players always turn down the invitation to play in them, regardless of missing the playoffs.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Marleau was surprisingly the most consistent. Heatley looked good but sometimes dissapeared. Thornton was his usual ghost self.
Overall they had an OK touney, but when you consider they were constantly playing agaisnt the oppositions 2nd and 3rd defensive pairing, their production is awful. To say they face the 1st pairing every night in SJ, then they can't produce when playing vs Swizerland and Russia's #5 and #6 defenseman is terrible. The best shut down D in the NHL have a hard time containing them, yet non NHL players can contain them when it matters most.
Still a little dissapointed..

Thornton was a minus-1 in the tournament. The only other guy not at least a plus-one was Bergeron at minus-two, and he mostly played PK from what I saw.
Quick question: Why is it that the Kostitsyns do not have the first inital in their jerseys, while most (like the Sedins) do? Is this just a suggestion?
Thank You and Happy Cinco de Mayo Eve!

Do they look like twins?
That "Deep Throat" wasn't right about the Halak trade!
"Don't worry, be Happy"
In no way am I a Coyotes fan, but wow did they make some decent moves yesterday.
They had certain areas to adress and I think they did just fine. Hope for them it can translate into a nice playoff run.

So, Price will hook the Sharks & reel them in tonight!
"Don't worry, be Happy"
I prefer starting Halak again Sharks type of teams.
Price was in a groove in the 1st 2 games this season, then JM started Halak the next game! Oh Oh!
"Don't worry, be Happy"
If we think about the fact that Habs have NOT won in SJ since 1999, we should carefully start the goalie.
Ok, Price gets the start If we have to choose carefuly.. Team canada beat Russia in the Olympics for the first time since 1960 this year. Anything is possible
I think the stat was we hadn't won an away game on our last game before Christmas in over 60 years but we just beat that, so I figure this one's a walk in the park.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Let me check... that was the 5:1 win over Canes on Dec. 23 with Halak in net.
As long as the players score... it doesn't matter who's in nets.
A brief field guide to HI/O posters:
Whilst wandering the lush savannah of HI/O, you may come across some creatures common to the environment.
The first amongst them is 'The Desperate Dealer'. This lumbering beast loves the concept of trading players who are doing well to 'maximise their trade value'. (Pleks, Halak, etc.) Very closely descended from the 'Hockey Pooler', a populous animal in nearby environments, it is noted for the short-term-thinking hockey-pool mentality that emphasizes instant success over long-term team-building. Strangely, the age demographic indicates that there are more adolescent 'Desperate Dealers' than adults. They can be recognized by their garish colours and bad grammar.
As you proceed across the sometimes rocky terrain of HI/O, you'll no doubt notice another creature seen most commonly flocking with others of its kind;
The 'Salary-Sap'. This wan and flightless bird is constantly wringing its hands and pulling open its purse strings and counting its salary pennies, wondering where, when, and how it can free up some salary space. It is of a bluish hue. It's cry, which echoes discordantly across HI/O is along the lines of "***'s salary is too big! We need to dump *** (regardless of how well he's playing or the importance of his role on the team) because of his salary!" The Salary-Sap has few ideas of what to do with this extra space, apart from purchasing big-name (and big salary) players who may or may not gel with the team. The Salary-Sap's greatest fear is spending money on a big-salary player because the Salary-Sap will have to find reasons to get rid of him as soon as possible to free up his salary-space.
Finally, on your jaunt around HI/O, you will notice swarms of irritating, stinging insects.
These are the "GMites". Any General Manager who drifts from his leather-padded lair into the HI/O environment can be expected to suffer an onslaught of poorly-aimed, frenzied stinging. It doesn't matter what breed of GM it is, the GMites will attack it relentlessly and without thinking. Nothing the GM does will appease these persistant and irritating pests. If the GM trades, the GMites will sting his eyes (for not seeing what they assume EVERYONE sees - i.e. the crapness of the player traded for). If the GM sits tight, the bugs will sting him either in his *** (to move it) or his privates (as they believe that this will help the GM 'grow some').
A common moaning sound comes from wherever these three beasts can be found. As you approach them, you will see them alternately give up, then re-attack, then give up again.
HI/O can be a pleasant place for a stroll, as long as you are aware of the area's particular fauna.
Happy Habbing!
**to be continued, no doubt**

Excellent post, bravo to you Matty.
If I may, I'd like to add one more group of life form: "montrealis goalie cheerleaderii". These, for some reason impossible to fathom, incessantly and inanely fight, argue, denigrate and insult others in order to put their goalie of choice above the other forgetting that both are our goalies and both are great kids.
Again, this is not to steal your thunder, enjoyed your post very much.
Cheers,

And then, there are posters who'r just nuts. Completely off the hook. Totally bongo.

Matty, great fun post, what a site to spend time. Great humour and Oh so true.
nicely done mate.
Wicked read!
Luckily, there are a few "reasonable owls" in that savanna who understand that a GM can only do so much, that it takes years to build a team, and that BG inherited a team in disarray half-a-dozen years ago. As Carbo once said (and anyone who ever won a cup knows) you also need a little luck to be successful, and that includes being relatively healthy team.
Awesome post! Who knew that here at Habs I/O we would need a guide to help us through the thicket of flora and fauna posing as posters. Thanks dude!
Post of the the Day. Excellent observations! I recommend that you trademark those titles immediately.
This is, without a doubt, the best post ever posted on HIO
BRAVO!!!!!!
Someone posted a comment below asking why players would prefer playing in TO over MTL.
Well, I just watched the Pierre Gauthier interview with RDS and it proved why. RDS! In no way do I want to criticize MTL and say TO is better, but I have to say that RDS is not professional at all while TSN is world class. TSN doesn't ask stupid questions, or ones that incline a negative or unwante response like RDS does. They asked PG if he tried trading Halak yesterday. Are you Fuuukin kidding me? As if he's going to say yes or no.
That was just so unprofessional coming from THE top sports media company here in Quebec. Just pathetic to be asked that on live television. So, seeing how the media treats management, how easy do you think it is to be a player and answer their stupid and dumb questions every night in the locker room? After a while it surely pisses you off...
"These head movies make my eyes rain" -Simple Jack
You are quit right Mike. Some media could care less about the club, they are professional trouble makers. Not professional sports reporters. Some of them don't even know how to put on a pair of skates, yet they talk and criticise the game and players as if they know all. Muddy the water is the only story that they know.
mike did you watch the Bruke press conference yesterday i thought that he was gonna kick some of those reporters they asked him some stupid questions as well, all media will look for the story and thats means asking stupid questions sometimes cause sometimes it's the non answers they are looking for.
"The Future Belongs to Those Who Believe in the Beauty of Their Dreams." Eleanor Roosevelt
I understand all media outlets are a pain in the ars once in a while. It's part of their job, they have to sell news whether it's good or bad. It's just that RDS just seems to always want the bad news, or create some instead.
Yesterday was a difficult day for many GM's, and a day where questions like RDS asked can be asked to a certain extent. But they come out with those unprofessional questions on a daily basis, whether they are needed or not. They try to create controversy where there is none. Shame on them. They suck, I hope we get an unbiased sports network to broadcast the Habs games.
"These head movies make my eyes rain" -Simple Jack
mike you right it crazy sometimes with the habs media coverage( i.e last years whole mafia/drug story with the K bros and Hammer) just looks to stir the pot so to say, its sad quite frankly.
"The Future Belongs to Those Who Believe in the Beauty of Their Dreams." Eleanor Roosevelt
I am ok with no moves made yesterday because the team still has whatever picks and prospects it did have and that is a good, SAFE way to continue building the team....fine, the team did not add any picks or prospects, but no big deal, as long as it was not a loss of picks and prospects....EVERY team has let UFAs go. When you get right down to it, when the Habs "lost" Souray, that was ONE UFA in ONE season; then Streit who was ONE UFA in ANOTHER season...no big deal, those players were having good seasons - better to have them and help out if you think success is there. The team lost 10 UFAs last season but added others....the Canadiens were NOT the only team to have double-digit FAs last season.
I am not sure what the issue is: many were afraid of selling the farm for short-term gain...it did not happen, so maybe PG DOES have success on his mind....I rather the conservative, slow-go approach, sometimes there is a bump in the road, but you still got to go towards your destination.
People want to dump on the team and management and ownership...go right ahead, your reasons are valid, but those of us who have faith in the players and are confident that things will work out for the better have reasons that are just as valid. There is really no point in accusing each other of "not seeing reality" or "not seeing the big picture"....the games still need to be played....if the team makes the playoffs, we will be right, if they do not, then you will be right...if the Habs make it past the first round, we will be right, if they do not, then you will be right...it is as simple as that. The team's fortunes are dictated by what happens on the ice, not by our yammering.
"I am guilty of using elipses..."
We lost a 2nd rounder for dominic moore!!!
The torch be yours to hold it high!
those of you bashing Dominic Moore for the 2nd rounder will be eating your words...moore is a solid 3rd liner
It was a 2011 2nd rounder...I think the team still has its 2010 2nd rounder...in any case, apparently the draft class of 2011 is supposed to be pretty poor compared to the riches of previous seasons.
"I am guilty of using elipses..."
There is way too much negativity concerning our beloved Habs, and that is very disconcerting. If so many of you feel that way, than cheer for another team. I stand by our team that Bob has built and will until the end. Nobody could have foreseen the injuries this year. So I feel Gauthier did what he felt best and that is nothing (of course offers came in, but not the right price) Now onto some guys that were brought in:
Gomez is overpaid, not his fault, but he works his *** off every shift that I see him play. He does have some skill and is a good example for the kids, excellent work ethic.
Gionta, he battles with BIGGER guys all the time, has a fantastic shot, just needs to get over that scoreless hump right now and the goals will come in bunches, another great example for the kids. Captain material.
Cammalleri, can’t say enough good things about him, awesome presence, awesome shot, just a really fun guy to watch, another great example for the kids. Captain material, he just knows hockey on another level.
Spacek, where would the team without him and Hamrlik working so DAMN HARD when Markov went down.
Gill, slow and steady always wins the race, how many times has that guy blocked some serious shots on a PK, or being down two guys, that reach is wicked, and seems to be a genuine guy with leadership skills.
Mara, yes he has been injured and is slow, but he is a big body and will be needed come the playoffs if another injury happens, sticks up for his teammates
Moen, excellent 3rd/4th liner that has skill to mold the young guys. Really takes his role seriously and gives it 110%
Pouliot, wicked shot, loves playing in Montréal, huge upgrade over Latendresse
Moore, IMHO, he is worth every bit of the chance that the 2nd pick MIGHT have brought in, and I hope he stays come off-season.
To all the Hamilton kids that have been brought up, kudos for what was expected of you when the team was decimated with injuries, how about that Pyatt, or White or Subban. Future is looking bright.
Anyways, yes this is a feel good post, I love my Montréal Canadiens passionately and I don’t care if nothing was done yesterday like all you babies are whining about. Love ‘em or hate, these are our Habs. Just remember the fits they can dish out to top teams like WSH and PIT, oh yeah and BOS is our bitches again :D
GO HABS GO!
"Gill, slow and steady always wins the race..."
Are you kidding? What races have you been watching? Slow yes, steady, yes. Players race around him all the time like he's standing still. Admittedly, he's good on the PK (and that's largely because there's not much end-to-end skating during penalty situations), but that's about it. Even-strength, he's terrible. He looks more like a pylon than a hockey player. He may be a hell of a guy, but being a nice guy doesn't translate to being a good NHL defenseman.
People whine incessantly about the smurfs, but I see them as the ones standing up and trying their best. Some of the others: not so much.
Riverview... you da man!
I like this a lot. I'm all for focusing on the positives.
Don't forget Metro and his tireless work ethic and incredible hands!
Keep the good feelings brewing!!
---Hope Springs Eternal---
Thanks Matty...there is now way I would forget Metro, he is something that has been desired for a while on this team, I just wanted to point out the 'new' crew in my post (this year).
Only good feelings from here on out, the GM has spoken, now we as fans have the duty to support this squad until the last game (hopefully June).
GO HABS GO!
I agree with you about Gionta...he is small but he battled with Chara every time for the puck just like Koivu did and won his fair share of those battles.
Many have been hammering about Gionta and Gomez...fine size and contract are fair game...but it is also fair game to point out that they are STANLEY CUP WINNERS....you can use the excuse of their system or Brodeur, but you still have to play and win the games.
"I am guilty of using elipses..."
About Gionta, I heard of him playing good against Chara. I saw it 2 days ago. He checked him and seemed to give a good one for a small guy. Then I noticed the frustration from Chara when he rubbed Gionta's face with he's big hands. Gionta has a way of getting into Chara's skin.
Nice Post, thank you..put a smile on my face
Thank you, glad I could cheer you up :)
Riverview, no mud in the Petticodiac above the causeway this morning. Great post.!
There will be if they let the riverkeeper open them damn gates...

Is anyone else really impressed witht he play of Tom Pyatt? I think it's really refreshing to see a reasonably sized skater with such speed and hustle come out of our system. I haven't been impressed as much with the consistency of some of our other call ups but this guy continues to show me why he is really going to make a hell of a player in this league. Keep it up Tom!
OMG!!! We can't praise Pyatt!! He was a Gainey acquisition!!!!!!!
So basically Gainey gets reamed here mostly because of Gionta, Gomez, Mara, Spacek and Gill. Are these guys earning their money? Not always, although I think Gill is solid out there killing penalties.
Here are some of BG's acquisitions in the past few years, not including the 5 mentioned above:
Bergeron,Cammalleri,Moen,Gorges,Hamrlik,Metropolit, Pouliot, Darche...These guys have been productive and are solid team players...
Did I agree with all of Gainey's decisions, such as not signing some of the free agents after last season? No...but when we went from 1st overall in 2008 to terrible in 2009, there was definetly a problem, whether it was the coaching....or cliques in the room.
Injuries have played a big part in hurting the Habs this year. Yes I know all teams have injuries, but I'd like to see where we stand as far as man games lost this season. I doubt there are many teams with more than us.
All I am saying is I know it's difficult sometimes, but we have to be positive. I really think we are headed in the right direction. We have 2 good goalies, and another coming along in Hamilton And Subban is about ready for the big league.
Wait until everyone is back in the lineup and see what this team can do. I just hope it won't be too late!
Pyatt came in the Gomez trade for Higgins (already re-cycled to Calgary) and McDonaugh (where is he?) I think Pyatt will turn out to be a steal.
