Ryder reunited with Koivu, Higgins

posted by Dave Stubbs at 14h37 EST on Jan 21

If today's practice is any indication, Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau is moving Michael Ryder back onto a line with Saku Koivu and Christopher Higgins for tomorrow night's Bell Centre tilt against the Boston Bruins.

Other lines used by Carbo today: Andrei Kostitsyn with Tomas Plekanec and Alex Kovalev, the team's most consistent trio; Steve Bégin with Bryan Smolinski and Sergei Kostitsyn; and Guillaume Latendresse, Maxim Lapierre, Tom Kostopoulos and Mathieu Dandenault rotating in and out on a fourth line.

You know what, I'll outright say it: I like Carbo. Sue me. Look at our team guys. Honestly, Carbo really didn't have much to work with. We had a bunch of kids, and when you have rookies, there's usually a lot of inconsistency. People moan and complain, but you honestly have to look at what Carbo has done for this team. NO ONE expected us to make the playoffs, much less in the position we are now, yet look where we are. Hell we've had one 1st line trio and 3 4th line trio's in the past couple of games yet look where we are. I don't know, I was a Carbo basher like all of you once, and still question some of his decision at times, but that's ok. What's not ok is the interminable bashing he gets constantly, and it's totally not deserved. It's so much easier to blame Carbo, then to point out how Higgins and Saku have been completely useless in the past few games right?

I don't know why nobody likes Carbo,I think he has done a great job with the Canadiens. If this line shuffling is so horrendous, then why are the Canadiens one of the highest scoring teams in the league? We don't have any superstar talent, yet we have the best powerplay in the NHL. Carbo has also kept our team in playoff position all year despite what the critics said at the beginning of the season. His choice of Huet as our No. 1 at the beginning of the season was a good one, there's no arguing he gives the Habs a chance to win almost every night, he's not the superstar Price will be one day, but he's an excellent choice for now. I doubt any other coach available would have the Habs in a better position than they are now. GO HABS

Why are so many of us Habs fans happy with mediocrity? We are only a few points out of the playoffs again this year,no big change from last season. I have no complaints with Carbs but when is Gainey gonna take a risk and bring a number one center to Montreal. No offense to Koivu as I think he is great but he never was or never will be a true number 1 center. I think this is the year to put that important peice of the puzzel in!!!

sag's picture
we have a lot of depth so could throw together a number of packages that wouldn't compromise our future. Jokanen is a blue chip player. Period. I like the potential of this one much better than a Tanguay deal...won't get my hopes up though!! As beaten as the line changing comments have become....What is he doing? We had a great combo going over the holidays...How can Carbo's memory be shorter than his patience?

sag i was wondering that myself if carbonneau has gotten dumb over night!!some of the things he's been doing lately have me scracthing my head!!like last game for instance he has koivu, ryder on the pp for 1:50 seconds and put kovy out with 10 seconds left!what's that all about?kovalev is the best pp guy in the league i'd leave him out for the whole 2 minutes!!!

Good point!! I noticed that too, and when Kovy was out there he never played the right wing, Koivu was there for most of the pp and who would you rather shooting from there, Kovy who has the most PP points on the team or Koivu???...Damn, no wonder why we got shut out!!

hey guys i heard a rumor that we(the habs)are looking at olli jokinen!!this is the player for us!!and our #1 center we'd solve a alot of problems with jokinen as#1 between higgins and s.kostitsyn!!

cournoyer12 the only thing is if we get jokinen we wouldn't get perry!1but wouldn't it be nice to have both!!...........it would probably take koivu and other stuff in a package to land either one so if i had my choice out of the 2 players i'd take jokinen!!

Just wondering, where is the Perry talks coming from??..Why would Burke ever trade that guy??..I do agree of taking Joikinen over the 2.

yes we do deserve a good player or 2!!they're coming i just know it!!gainey is going to get us a couple because the centennial year is coming and we want to go for broke and go for it!so yes he will but who and when!!!

sag's picture
too good to be true!! Has a NTC doesn't he???

he does but he wants out!he doesn't get along with jacques martin!!so the panthers would move him!!

I can only imagine that Ryder alone would not be enough. I bet Panthers would not interested in any of our deadwood either. If we are to get Olli I will cost us at least of the premium prospects/rookies. But I am still for it. Jokinen is a great forward and will give our offense a great boost.

timo i would think that ryder and koivu, and macdonagh would be the package ..but yeah man i agree with you if we could get him we'd have our big #1 center!!that we've been looking for!!

i agree but unfortunately the panthers would want our #1 prospect that is macdonagh!!so i don't think fischer would get it done but like they say to get something good you have to give up something good!!

Kostitsyn's goal was # 2 on the NHL channel's plays of the week behind Rick Nash's goal.

Komi is an early candidate for the Monster of the Year :) http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=227896&hubname=nhl

Pens and Caps are going into OT. Man, I hate these 3 point games. Seems like every game goes into OT these days. Oh, and they are playing Judas Priest in Pitts. Nice. That I respect.

You may hate those 3 point games but don't forget 8 of our points came that way!!!

Actually Habs and Leafs have highest number of points for overtime or shootout loss - 8. What gives.

The Teacher's picture
Apparently Carbo said it's not necessarily a matter of Ryder being out of the doghouse, but Koivu and Higgins in it. According to TSN that is.

gmd's picture
Ha! So anyone in the doghouse gets put with Ryder. If that's the case I guess we'll see Ryder, Smokes and Breezer on a line against the Devils on Thursday. Oh wait, that's the fan's doghouse, not Carbo's.

So Caps score 4 on Sabourin before he got pulled in the middle of the 2nd. That's 4 more than Habs did all game. Hmm...

Sabourin was good on Saturday but he was lousy tonight. (So was Kolzig.)

gmd's picture
However, they have Ovechkin, we don't...and never will.

Hoegarden's picture
His family did not drive down from Val D'or to cheer him on like they did at the Bell. Did you see the highlights of the Sabres/Canes game with Thibault in nets ? He looked as good as Sabourin did tonight. Ovechkin vs Malkin; that's hockey !

You mean guys who pick corners instead of shooting at a goalie? :)

gmd's picture
Well Kovalev isn't too shabby with picking the corners. Maybe he could give Ryder some tips :-)

Hoegarden's picture
Long overdue.

linp's picture
Carbo has the urge to shuffle the lines and Huet has the urge to wander away from the net. Both are cancers to our team.

The Teacher's picture
LOL, you don't mince words do ya :P

I for one have joined the anti Pierrette and Yvonne brigade. Sometimes you wonder how those two wound up broadcasting Hab games. Especially Yvonne. I'm so sure he's a bitter Nordiques fan still angry about how insignificant his team was.

G-Man's picture
"Build it, and Stanley will come." That's from that Costner movie, "Rink of Dreams". Unfortunately, patience is the word, and that's hard to take with life moving so quickly these hectic days. We have many players in the pipeline who will either be traded to fill a need or make the Habs better. I've said this before: we are sitting pretty. On the cusp of living up to the past of our great franchise, in fact. As long as we hold on to enough patience to develop the next great franchise player, and not trade him away for someone that was great 2 or 3 seasons ago. Julien in Boston isn't rubbing his hands in glee: his team has lost 5 straight to the Habs, and sometimes by 3 goals. Bring 'em on! Gilbert

I agree I think in two or three years we will have our stars and make a run for the cup. I hope I am still around to see it

For any of you that have Facebook, and that are tired of Pierre et Yvon, I invite you to visit the group: Anti Fan Club de Pierre et Yvon and join... We are almost 5000 members already... Our goal, to change their attitudes or to replace them with Martin McGuire and Dany Dubé. There was actually an article about us in LaPresse today... hopefully, things will change soon Thank you, you can also visit: http://www.danyrioux.com/afcpy/wordpress/2008/01/20/lettre-ouverte-a-rds... to see the open letter than is written to RDS. It is in French unfortunately. _______________________________________ CH is for Chris Higgins

J.T.'s picture
I can't say anything against Pierre et Yvon. I'm too darn glad to have RDS bringing me every single Habs game as part of my regular cable package.

G-Man's picture
Right on. Gilbert

I don't know... I like Pierre, can;t say too much bout Yvon though. But Pierre calls the game much quicker than other people and has a French accent that is understandable!

Haha... I agree... his francais is better than that of say Mon. Demers :) Demers reminds me a bit of how Richer used to speak... I could understand him only half the time. Must be that Lac St Jean speak that only local folks undertand :)

I just tune them out. I agree that they are to quick to criticize some players while others, like Latendresse or Brisbois, can do no wrong. But overall, I treat them same way as I treat Bob Cole and Harry Neil. I just don't listen to their rumblings. Still, believe me, they are no half as bad as when TQS and its crew used to broadcast some games. Those broadcasts were leafs worthy.

Shiloh's picture
Demers has caught the "I love Billy Tenderness" disease as well. Never in my over 50 years of watching hockey have I seen a player with Latendresse's poor talents jump straight to the big leagues. He is a very average minor league player but the RDS guys love him - wonder why?

The Teacher's picture
ahhh, to bring back SRC and La Soiree du Hockey

slamtherimtim's picture
now you got it

IMHO It's time to get rid of Yvon Pedinault and his agenda and his constant negative comments of some players and overlooking his Boys errors , Pierre is alright and has to agree or he'd be in an arguement all broadcast.

Chuck's picture
I won't be signing. I like Pierre and Yvon. . . . ______________________________________ "All bow down before the Komisaurus Rex!"

G-Man's picture
Sad. Gilbert

What makes everyone think that these guys would want to come here. Why jump to a team that might make the playoffs if you could go to another team that is sure. So many of them now have no trade in their contracts. And as free agents very few wanted to come here. I hope we build from within unless it is someone that is sure to make a difference and wants to play here. If Hossa moves I think its Ottawa

Smart Dog's picture
Good comments all through here... I agree with most. (That's what makes them good!). I hope we don't get Tanguay either. It wouldn't be a bad trade, just not a really good one. And I think it would be wise to wait for a really good one. It's not like we suck, like some teams that wear blue and white.. or like we need the bodies. Shawn S. - No K2 didn't do anything to get demoted, but neither did Chipchura. I think Guy has a Ouija board. That's all I can figure. Nick - You are right we've got too many guys. And Carbs is trying to get the most out of even the sucky/old/slow ones. kajmojo - Higgins needs to be on another line. I agree! He's the one guy that could play any line and probably a) not complain and b) be good at it. His slump is a problem, but at least on a lower line he probably won't be as well covered. ________________________________________________________________ Habs Fans! The FUTURE looks bright: Plekanec, Higgins, Chipchura, A Kostitsyn, Lapierre, Latendress, Price, S Kostitsyn, Komisuarus, O'Byrne

Hot_Pie's picture
Ugh. I have an ominous feeling that SK is going to get demoted soon. Ugh.

Shiloh's picture
I have that feeling as well, although I keep hoping everybody will wake up from the spell that lets them see Latendresse as an NHL-calibre player. He is not even talented enough for Hamilton.

24 Cups's picture
In terms of the roster, he's safe until O'Byrne comes back. Even then he would be safe as that would put us at 23 players (stand corrected on that one). If we were three players over 18 skaters, then we would be sitting two defensemen and one (grinder) forward. Of course that's assuming that Chipchura stays in Hamilton. I see no advantage whatsoever by sending Sergei K to Hamilton. The Original 24 Cups

It's no coincidence that the Habs offense suddenly took off when Higgins was split from Koivu's line. Higgins, Koivu and Kovalev are the sparkplugs to this offense. Put any two or three on the same line and you've simply made it easier for opponents to match up. So it's also no coincidence that the Habs get shut out by a third string goalie when Carbo puts Higgins back with Koivu. So the problem here isn't Ryder back with Koivu. It's Higgins. Get him on a third scoring line, and we're back in business.

The Teacher's picture
I have a question. Are all of you excited to get Tanguay because he's a "name" or because you truly believe he'll be beneficial for our team on the ice and on the cap sheet?

Blitzen's picture
I agree but not sure Hossa would sign in Montreal. He could just as well go to Pittsburgh. No taxes, no pressure and great playmakers. Not thrilled about Tanguay either.

If you ever watched Senators during playoffs when Hossa was still playing for them, you'd know you don't want him. He is not a playoffs kinda guy.

24 Cups's picture
Hossa's salary this year is $7 mil with a cap hit of $6 mil. Atlanta has some cap space and they would be crazy not to try and resign him, although he may not want to stay. If Hossa goes on the open market this summer he would probably bring $8 mil a year on a long term deal. The Original 24 Cups

fuhgawz's picture
not really on the Tanguay train as well ---- there i think are going to be other options that could be better ....... just like the post below me ... hossa that being said i think his 5.2 or is it 5.4 is to rich for him good vison and all but not as much flash or danger as say a Hossa -- we need someone to put the puck in the net not someone to distribute the puck we have play makers and passers already ......

likehoy's picture
i've been against tanguay since the start i'm for hossa :)

Fer_hab's picture
Price had a strong game last night. http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3582862 Glad to see Ryder back on the top line. Hopefully he can have the same output as he did in last years stretch run.

nick's picture
i think it's getting painfully clear we have too many people sitting on the bench... Should / Could a multi-player trade be in the works ? Too bad for Smoke's no-trade clause.

Blitzen's picture
Smoke has a no-trade clause, not a no-waive clause.

The Teacher's picture
you sure it's not a no-movement clause?

Hoegarden's picture
It's so simple; you go from the pressbox to the 3rd line, score two goas in one game and get promoted to the 1st line. Two turtles and one rabbit ? like having two Edsels and a Lamborghini. I hope Gainey steps in on this one and gives Carbo a head shake. Bruins must be rubbing their hands if they see this.

Coach Julien is probably sitting there reading the new lines thinking... "Guy... your freakin nuts man"

speaking of lineups our future defense is stacked...what would you guys like to see as our future defence Markov - Komi Hamrlik - McDonagh Valentenko - Yemelin now where do weber (who is awesome and i feel only 2 years away from the NHL) and p.k. subban, and david fischer fit in? TRADE PIECES :)

not all will develop into nhl players though. i think 1 or 2 will be traded this year or next though
