• At a Glance: Mathieu Darche has been a useful player for the Canadiens since being recalled from Hamilton and he continued to show why Tuesday night with a pair of goals in a 5-3 Montreal win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canadiens jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals by Glen Metropolit and Scott Gomez, who finished the night with three points. Steven Stamkos made it 2-1 early in the second, but Benoit Pouliot quickly restored the two-goal lead and Darche scored the first of his two goals 7:33 into the second, chasing Antero Niittymaki from the Tampa Bay net. Matt Walker made it 4-2 midway through the second when his shot went off Travis Moen's stick and deflected passed Jaroslav Halak. Darche's second goal of the game, and his fifth of the season, came 3:26 into the third period, only moments after the end of a Canadiens power play. Martin St. Louis scored with 1:07 to play, but the Lightning could get no closer. Halak made 28 saves for the win, with Montreal going 1-for-2 on the power play while killing off three of four Tampa Bay man advantages. The Canadiens have won four of five games, and three straight, since returning from the Olympic break.
• Key Moments: Montreal killed off a Tampa Bay power play at the end of the second and start of the third before Darche gave the Canadiens a three-goal lead.
• What It Means: The Canadiens improve to 33-29-6 and 72 points, moving them two points ahead of the Boston Bruins, 4-3 losers in overtime to the Maple Leafs.
• What's Next: The Edmonton Oilers are in town on Thursday and the Bruins visit Saturday to wrap up a short three-game homestand for the Canadiens.
My wife and I are very happy for Mathieu Darche. He is one of our favorite players to come through Syracuse. Living the dream.......Way to go Mathieu!
Halak wins becasue he is far supperior to Price. Price can't handle the pressure in MTL. If he wants to salvage his carear he is best to play in Atlanta or Nashville where no one cares....His body language is pathetic, when he lets in a weak goal; I want to give him a hug becasue he looks so sad. Im sure he is counting the days so he can return to Williams Lake and ride his horses and go hunting while chain smoking and drinking. Not to mention some good ol skirt chasing.....I wish i was 22 with a couple of million in my bank.....
I hope Halak remains a hab for a loooonnnnggggg tiiiimmmmmeeeee
I was really hopping SK would show some life after his olympic experience...I dont get it. All the talent in the world but just cant seem to find his game in the NHL. I'd let him play with his brother for a couple of games to see if that helps...
So Cooke won't be suspended for his hit on Savard.
Ya, the brothers K need to get their butts in gear and fast! Habs need that 1st line scoring!

Ok, listen you peoples... Price and Halak are both good goalies. Numbers wise Halak is doing better, which should truely translate into more starts... But Im not going to take anything away from Price (yes they lost, but he was INCREDIBLE in the San Jose game), comparing his record to say, MA Fleury, or R Luongo, or even M Brodeur, at the same time in all their careers and Price's numbers are better, which truly means he has nowhere to go but up. The difference between Price and those other goalies is that those other goalies have GOOD TEAMS in front of them... Brodeur has always been on a DEFENSE first team, Fleury has Crosby and Malkin to put in goals. Luongo is finally playing for a team that has Cup potential written all over them. Give Price a better team to backstop and he WILL be a great goalie. Until then, give our own "Miracle with two legs on ice", aka, Halak, more starts, BECAUSE he IS finding ways to WIN...
P.S. How the heck was Gill kept off the scoresheet last night?? He CLEARLY earned an assist on the Stamkos goal...
So once again it's not Prices fault just everyone around him. Halak is just lucky and is inferior to the much superior Price..I got you
Ive been one of gomez' harshest critics all season, so its time to give him some props. He's been playing very inspired hockey lately, and good on him. He's starting to show those leadership qualities that I thought he had at the beginning of the season.
I think Brian Burke did us a huge favor by leaving him off the US olympic team.
I was harsh on Gomez also .. however I'm not quite a forgiving as you .. I'd like to see him string a few good games together offensively ..
A few good games? How about the last 4? He got 8 points.
No? How about the last 11? He's got 15 in them.
No? How about the last 30 games? He put up 32.
How big a string qualifies as "a few" for you?
Without looking through all the posts, I apologize if this has already been said. But on 2nd and 3rd goals last night Halak looked week. Another article on HI/O indicated he's been in his equipment every day since early February. He might be suffering from a bit of fatigue/burnout.
I'm sure this will spark a goaltending fire again, which is not my intention. Just making an observation.
Ultimate Die-Hard Since 1986. T.
I watched the replays again this morning and paid particular to the knee on knee and if BGL's was considered an intential knee on knee action then this was as well. Ohlund made absolutely no attempt to hold up and knew what he was doing when he hit Pleks.
Should be reviewed by the league and action taken, IMHO.
"Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice - to win, or to be French-Canadian?" -- Ken Dryden
The hits are not even close to being comparable. Ohlund was going for the puck(which he touched), and for Plekanec's body. Plekanec left himself vulnerable, trying a cute little move while standing still, trying to jump out of the way; a recipe for disaster. No problem with that play at all.
Laraque never tries to play the puck, and sticks out his leg because he knows he got beat. Kronwall was also injurred for months.
Well, like I said, in my humble opinion, I feel Ohlund went for the knee. Wasn't condoning BGL's move, just comparing and yes, in my opinion, they are similar, just different results.

Awesome game last night...nice to see us own "Dirty" Vinny and the boys for a change...
The most promising thing about the team right now is the scoring from many different players...that is key for playoff hockey that everyone can be a threat...if that continues we will be solid to make the playoffs...
Everyone should be happy about Scott Gomez playing so well...while I still wish we hadn't invested that much cap space we are stuck with him regardless...for a long time...
Glad to see Darche getting his due with the big club...
I wouldn't get the parade permit yet...but not bad after a major blow-up of the team this summer...8th place was my expectation and the Habs are exceeding that right now...
"Vive le col roulé! Le système, C'est le col roulé!"
TG we didn't get Vinny for a bigger cap hit for longer.
Has anybody noticed/missed Lapierre out of the line-up? just shows how invisible he's been this year....
Not me ... when's the K Bros. coming back .>> we can sure use them also .. hahaha
A yapping cheap shot ghost...he can't be gone soon enough...his replacement (Darche) is here and he is not one of the most hated guys in the NHL...who can't even fight...at least Avery fights
"Vive le col roulé! Le système, C'est le col roulé!"
mara is a better ghost.
At least Mara doesnt commit cheap acts of P***Yness... I hope they do to Lapierre what they did to Laraque... flush the turd down le toilet...
Was anybody else really cheering for Darche to get an empty netter for a hat trick? Kudo's to Martin for putting him out there with Pleks in the final minute to give him that chance.
Patience... a quality paramount to any kind of team success... a quality none of you here seem to have...
You don't want to give time to Carey Price to mature as a goalie...
You want PK Subban in the lineup NOW knowing full well if he makes mistakes, you'll be all over him like Price...
You crucified Scott Gomez for a contract that any of us would take and jumped on him from the get go cuz he wasn't posting Wayne Gretzky numbers...
You vilify Jacques Martin because apparently you're all better coaches even though the man has guided a raw squad of strangers in October thru injuries and odds to maintain a playoff spot...
You called him names and constantly questioned Bob Gainey, the definition of patience, because he didn't get this guy or didn't sign that guy or got this guy and signed that guy. BG built this team of character and grit and perseverance because he ran out of patience with the talented puck moving Euros of the last 5 years that folded at the first sign of pressure. Even Tomas Plekanec plays a North American style of hockey now and has become a dynamic player on this team after being a passenger on Kovalev's team...
Patience... take some time, take a deep breath and finally admit that a lot of you have been wrong about a lot of things Montreal Canadiens this season cuz this team is finally gelling.
I cood not have said it better myself............i've been a habs fan for 50 years and KNOW great teams need to gel....uh like 93.....KEEP THE FAITH!
Good post. The deeper into the season we get the more I like Jacques Martin. He was given a tough job. Take an essentially new team, in the hardest city to coach in, and get it to gel, all the while dealing with an ongoing goalie controversy and injuries to key components of your roster. I believe that Gainey has left the Habs in a much better position than most people appreciate.
Nice post.
Agree on the majority of your post. The one thing I don't buy completely, the coach.
I'm still not sold on Martin.

good post. three game win steak woooo!!!! both goalies were apart of it woooo!!!! JM coaches it, woooo!!!! PG traded for moore woooo!!!! scotty G had 3 points last night woooo!!!! Subban is getting experience in the AHL woooo!!!! patience is a virtue woooo!!!!
I like your Style :) lol

Are you kidding me/us?
- GOMEZ was right to take the money. That does not imply BOB & Co. had to trade for it.
- 10 UFA after 2008/09 and none are signed up for this coming year? What does that say about your roster and who exactly is responsible for that?
- Jacques Martin hired b/c of his successful championship runs (wins) where exactly?
I love BOB GAINEY the hockey player and will be first in line to critique his ability to manage an NHL team.
-- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --
Name me one of the 10 UFA'S we did not sign who is having a better year this year than he had last year and except for KOMO (thank the leafs for out bidding us) or AK27 none of the others none got even a sniff of thier previous salary from 2009.
If JM had a goalie playing the way Halak is playing this year in any of those Ottawa teams, I'm thinking he might be wearing a ring or two...
Gainey traded for Gomez cuz he's a quality centerman, screw the salary, the hit gets better every season from now.
10 UFAs after '08-'09 cuz Bob knew he wanted to change the gutless prima donna team we had.
Jacques Martin is a quality experienced NHL coach and is a welcome change from the rookie coaches Montreal has hired since Jacques Demers who at his hiring in '92 had the same rep as Martin and then he went and won the Cup.
Gainey rocks, 'nuff said.
10 UFA for a reason. When all these guys were on our team who could have predicted how they react to Montreal pressure. The team had to be blown up and Gainey did an amazing job rebuilding in one single summer.
If we didn't sign Gomez, Gionta, and Cammalleri, who would we have signed? Who was out there that wanted to play in Montreal?
We have who we have and I'm grateful we are where we are instead of tanking and hoping that someone like Hall turns into a Winner.
My Glass is always half full :)

I was originally not happy with Gomez, always optimistic but not happy. He is finally looking like a game breaker. He is finally looking like a player that can create chances and generate offence, something that we were lacking for quite some time. With Cammy coming back I believe that this team may just be coming together at the right time.
I remember early on in the season when he was stuck playing with fourth liners because of injuries and fans here were slamming him. I just laughed and supported him, and knew the situation. Now you don't here a peep from those (cough cough) fans. Instead they turn on someone else lol.
Some of us talk hockey, and some of us know hockey, hehe I do both toot toot :)

...You can be sure there are more than Our Canadiens evaluating Guy Boucher for an NHL coaching position at this time ...We don't have the luxury We once had to keep someone like a Guy Boucher on a string ...in today's NHL, do You realistically think We can hold-off Boucher the right to sign for an NHL team that wants Him NOW (for next season) ...whether under contract or not ?
...if You were Guy Boucher ...would You wait for pie-in-the-sky ?
...either He is Our coach next season OR au revoir Guy Boucher

Don Lever had several succesful seasons in the AHL, and people were not banging down the door to hire him last summer.
I don't think we have to worry, unless they have another stellar season next year.
Usually it's one period at the end of the sentence.
...Oh please
...trivia question
...PK Subbinator has the second-best +/- in the AHL at +38 ...IF He maintains this He also will break an Hamilton Bulldog team record
...which former Bulldog and current Canadiens' defenceman holds the existing Bulldog team +/- record ?
...would You believe ...Marc-Andre Bergeron (+/-34 2002-2003) ?

...Plekanec for Captain !
...an Original Hab ! ...Leading Us in Points ...played from Game 1 with heart and above His weight ...turned His 'game' 360 degrees from last season ...calm yet intense ...well-spoken ...intelligent ...PROUD to be a Hab ...AND I believe being chosen Captain will be a selling point convincing Pleks to re-sign a reasonable contract extension and stay A Hab
...Gomez is just recently getting His game into traction ...Gionta (My second choice) ...and Markov (the Reluctant) ...for As
...Cammaleri (Whom I platonically love as Our Sniper) can be a bit of an egoist, ...would be not a 'uniter' in the room ...nor would Gomez
...this may change next season, depending IF We make the playoffs, IF Pleks can hold His Own in the playoffs, and IF He decides to re-sign
...In the case Plekanec does not ? ...IF Cammy can actually learn to speak French, He would be in the running with Gio and Gomez
...again, Gionta would be My preferred alternative as Our Captain

If you've noticed, Gomez is always the guy with the biggest smile after a goal...whether his own or his teamates and always has a few words for them. He also always says a few words to the goalies at the end of the game, win or lose. I think he is a uniter. That does not necessarily mean he is a captain or that I want him as captain, but he is definitely a positive influence for the team.
can someone with a bit of knowledge on the subject clear this up for me plz: Is it possible for a team to trade a RFA on july 1st... also does the arbtration eligibility of a player affect the outcome in anyway???
thanks
You can trade a RFA although it makes more sense to keep them and sign or release with the other team's qualifying offer to receive draft picks.
They call me Shane
RFAs can be traded like any other player. That's what is happening when you hear that a team has traded "the rights to Player X".
KilimanJARO is playing well, I say he starts every game he can from now on.
-------US Born Habs fan, Proud to be a traitor (when it come to Hockey).
not a bad game... i didn't particularly like the last 5 minutes or so, but overall a pretty solid game with few defensive lapses here and there. But they did what they had to do and that is a beat a weaker team that is chasing them for the playoffs spot.
I hope they won't take the oilers lightly on thursday.
Go Habs! Timo (somewhat) happy.
Who are you and what have you done with Timo? Disliking only the last 5 minutes have shown you to be...an imposter! :)
(Yes, I spelled it that way on purpose.)
I'm liking the (somewhat) revised Timo. (Somewhat) less caustic. (Somewhat) more positive. (Somewhat) pleasurable to read. Keep up the (somewhat) good work :)
You hardly have a happy life. lol

...................Go Habs??????
I swear, if Gomez was a 3 to 5 million guy, he'd be my favourite player.
From his glorious skating, to his amazing assists to his attitude off the ice.
The guy's a winner, forget the salary, it's him or no one and I'll take him over no one anyday :)

First off, I wanna say you got my top-3 favourite monikers. In fact you've inspired me to put more words in like that, you know: habolish, hab-strung, habernation, habcess, habsynth, oh yeah, I gotta get in on that.
To business: back by impopular request,
There's this player that was on Bob’s miiiiind
All the time, Pou-Pou-Poulio. Oh, oh, oh.
Now we don't barely know his naaaame
But I think we likes him just the same,
Pou-Pou-Poulio. Oh, oh, oh.
Oh! When Bob called him? He was there.
He came running, like a hare.
Habs! All he needs. All his life,
I felt so meh until Bob said the wooooord!
Pou-Pou-Poulio, just said the word:

you got me with habsynth...
He is doing an outstanding job of supporting my boy, & the team's main man, Gomez. Him over Lats any day: a legendary move by Bob Gainey.
How 'bout him indeed, a magnificent player, size, speed, hands, defensive awareness, the definition of the total package.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Am I the only one confused at his lack of assists? He's a good passer, but he just doesn't get the assists you would expect. I thought he should have got one on the Gomez goal tonight too.
There must be a mistake of some kind; he DEFINITELY passed Gomie the puck, no?

I thought same...maybe league will revise as they tend to do..
Hard to get assists when you play with Gomez.
Should be a bit easier playing with Gionta.
Well, back from the Bell and it was a blast! The only gripe I can say seeing the game live is how eerily quiet it was in there given the score. I guess its due to not playing a rival like Boston or the Leafs. My fiancee was completely overwhelmed at how awesome it is to see a game live. We were sitting in the whites, just left of center at the rails, really good vantage point imo. *edit* I was watching the warmup and got really nervous because Halak was like a sive and letting in shots left right and center. I guess it was to psyche the Bolts while they were practising.
Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

the hell man?!?!?! u scared me shltless and made me doubt my own eyes when u said that pleky didnt come back in the game... lol
good stuff esti
i think thats 8 points in 4 games for gomez. i may be wrong
Great win... attaboy GOmez... he sure is shutting up his salary critics ... watching the guys play the way they've been playing lately it hurts me thinking that next year most of them will not be back with us... and the one that scares me the most is that I have a very bad feeling that Plecky will sign with Toronto...
lets just hope that by some miracle we can sign Halak, pleky, metro, Pouliot and Darche...
add SK to that list
9 more wins! That's all we need! Keep up the great work habs! This was a must win game.
Good all way round Habs win 5-2, Boston loses in OT, habs pick up and extra point there. Bulldogs beat the Marlies 3-2 in OT after starting the third period down 2-1.

geeez, the way Halak fell asleep on the 3rd one, I'm glad it isn't a closer game
I know we scored 2 goals but we stopped skating in the second and the play and shots on net tells the story. Lets go back at it in the third.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
Gomez and Co. played a really good 1st period.
What really happened the other night in San Jose:
Rather than standing in the middle of the dressing room and delivering an epic speech, non-captain material Jaroslav Spacek invites a few Habs teammates into a corner of the HP Pavilion and shows them this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqqjnsljBrI
Inspired by the latest Gerard Butler flick, Spacek offers a “bounty” for anyone who can “get” Scott Nichol during the game. Some are heard mumbling. Travis Moen is seen looking at the floor.
After an eventless first, Spacek reminds his teammates, albeit a little more audibly, about the offer for someone to “get” Nichol. Moen continues to look at the floor.
Through two, the game’s intensity level has picked up, and Spacek again reminds his fellow Habs that Nichol is still skating. Moen studies the floor. Max Lapierre is heard cursing in French about how he is the one who should do the yapping.
A little over a minute into the third, the Moore-Moen-Laps line takes the ice and after getting a chance, promptly give up an odd-man rush due to an ill-advised Ryan O’Byrne pinch. Nichol heads up ice and Lapierre pursues him. Spacek is heard yelling from the bench, “Now! Now!”
After Nichol hits the post, Laps gives the “target” a shove into the end boards. A scuffle ensues. Once the play is dead, Moen is seen staring at the ice. Spacek smiles to himself. Ray Ferraro boils over. The rest is history.
Ha!
Fantastic scenario.
It happened, though. I know it did.

The false equivalency in this remark is saved from opprobrium only by the almost certain fact that Mr. Todd is in the pitiable state of actually believing himself to be of a stature capable of 'clashing' with Bob Gainey. I had as well write that I 'clashed' with Mike Tyson in a street encounter.
