• PREGAME AUDIO: Jacques Martin I and II | Benoit Pouliot | Jaroslav Spacek | Hal Gill
Jaroslav Halak will be going for his fourth cosecutive victory tonight when he faces the Edmonton Oilers but Canadiens coach Jacques Martin is reluctant to make any longterm commitment to the goalie, saying: "I'm not looking that far ahead. We're just taking it one game at a time."
The Canadiens will stick with their same lineup tonight which defenceman Paul Mara is a healthy scratch and Maxim Lapierre is serving the final game of a four-game suspension.
Michael Cammalleri and Marc-André Bergeron skated before the practice but neither is close to returning to the lineup.
I had a feeling that the Habs would take the Oilers a little too lightly and look now it's a 4-4 game, where anything can happen, like a bad bounce.
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
This has to be one of the worst games I have seen from Halak in a while. 3 of the 4 goals were weak. I guess Price starts Saturday
To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.
i would say more like 2 of them. but this is a very weird game, everyone looks all over the place. time to shut down the door halak and pleks go get us a winner
lil bit of a stinker from the habs tonight... halak looks a lil lost in there as well
... I hope someone will take the time to explain to those two guys calling themselves "Subbanators" that instead of supporting PK, when they go to the game in black-face, that can be considered a racist act.
"Whenever you have the puck, and don't know what to do with it, put it in the net." - Toe Blake
You've got to be kidding.....I didn't see that. What idiots...
I just checked on my PVR..I saw them.....No class at all.....
EDM defense is horrible..We get speed through the neutral zone, we will win this one easily, IMO..
If the team plays like they should they will win 5-1 tonight.
Lou

I honestly I think that Price should've played tonight considering the opposition, and not started for example against San Jose. Halak needs to play the tougher teams, Price should play the weaker ones.
???? Price played great against San Jose. That being said, we need to WIN all of these games from now on!! In case anyone hadn't noticed. The team wins when Jaro's in the net, not so much when Price is, it's a no brainer! Halak should play all the remaining games based on this alone. I like both goalies, but only one of them has proven he can win.
Jose Theodore played great for the Habs in a lot of losses too.
I agree, Price should have played.
Lou :)
funny how the tables have turned now eh? heh
Harsh.
But I agree.

Just reading everyone's comments on who is the #1 goalie and I'd like to say..
You win, you keep your spot on the ice. You lose you sit til the other loses.
In a perfect world we can sign both, in a realistic world we'd have to trade players like Hamrlik, Gill, A. Kost., or just keep 1 goalie for next year.
Personally I'd like to keep both, move on from Hamrlik, AK (as much as I like them in the lineup) they are just too much salary for their actual team NET WORTH. We have guys like Weber and Subban who can ease into their roles next year, while O'Byrne is slowing developping. Gorges has turned into a bit of stud (he can have his major lapses, but so does everyone else). We should definitely draft a good dman in the 1st round this year, with a couple of big body presence players following the 1st rnd pick, who can make an impact after playing 1 - 2 years in the AHL.
When all is said and done, Pierre Gauthier has quite the situation to work with, but Bob Gainey has given him a few nice pieces to work with. I would definitely like to see Darche back next year!! His play has been quite extraordinary for such an older, and cheap talent. Anyways, enjoy the game tonight everyone. I'll be in class doing a practice mid-term for university. :( :( :(
"The NHL was going to test the Stanley Cup for lysteria, but then they realized it hasn't touch a Maple Leaf product in over 42 years!"
I disagree. Play Price one in every 4-5 games at most and not consecutively regardless of how good he plays. Play Halak consecutive games even if he doesn't play well in one of them. Halak will bounce back after a bad game and Price gets lackadaisical after a win or a good outing. Losses makes Halak compete harder and wins make Price, and everyone else, think he's number 1 again.
HMMMM contrary to the poster below me, I believe we're playing Edmonton, sometimes tells me they'll give us trouble. 4-3 SO victory.
so what happens to rfas in regards to offer sheets. i attached some info below but if i were a team and needed a goalie i wouldn't mind making and offer for price and giving up a 1st and 3rd round pick at 3.7M a year. some teams might try and bully mtl. they have to be careful
http://www.nhlscap.com/offer_sheets.htm
-- WHAT IS THE COMPENSATION REQUIRED FOR SIGNING A RFA TO AN OFFER SHEET?
For 2008-09, the compensation due for signing a RFA to an Offer Sheet is:
Amount
Compensation Due
$863,156 or less
None
$863,156 - $1,307,812
3rd round pick
$1,307,812 - $2,615,625
2nd round pick
$2,615,623 - $3,923,437
1st and 3rd round pick
$3,923,437 - $5,231,249
1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick
$5,231,249 - $6,539,062
Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
$6,539,062 or more
Four 1st round picks
When you look at the bottom five only Edmonton could use a goalie going forward. IMO makes sense for them to make an offer and forfeit (likely) 1st/3rd in 2010.
-- I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! --
Too much is made of our impending RFA's and the chance they might not re-sign. Since the lock-out, only 5 players have signed offer sheets. Four of those were matched by the original team (Kesler and Bernier in Van, Vanek in Buffalo, and Backes by the Blues). Dustin Penner remains the only recent RFA to have jumped teams by way of an offer sheet.
$5,231,249 - $6,539,062
Two 1st's, one 2nd, one 3rd round pick
Lol, poor Burke.
burke better hope kessel becomes a 45g scorer
Burke gave Boston a 1st round and a 2nd round in 2010 and 1st round in 2011...
Potentially Patrick Kane, Van Reimsdyk, and Stamkos...........
Burke better hope he becomes the next Gretzky.....
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey...
Van Riemsdyk was 2nd overall, not 2nd round, but I still agree with the point you're making.
I'm probably in the minority but that is still a good trade . With Kessel you KNOW what you got a 22 year old who CAN score goals. (54 games 22 goals) He gives up a first ROUND draft choice which may or may not be a top 5.
Who is to say how that player pans out I don't care who it is. Tavares got off to a hot start but with 20 games to go only has 36 points (18-18)
As written under, he gave up 1st and 2nd this year and a 1st next year. But on top of that, we had leafs 2nd pick for the Grabovski trade but we traded it for Lang, so Bruke traded a 3rd and 2nd (Flames pick for Stralmen) to get his 2nd back just incase he was going to put an offersheet for Kessel, so its two 1st, one 2nd, and 3rd round pick for Kessel. THATS ALOT!!!!
Stamkos had an underwhelming rookie season as well in the NHL, this year he could join Crosby and Ovie in the 50-goal club.
Burke gave up his first rounds picks for this year and next and a 2nd-rounder for this year as well. It's something to trade your first-round picks if you're a playoff-bound team, but if you are simply projecting a possibility of playoffs, it's a very dangerous move as the wrong injuries or a bad stretch can quickly put you out of it. Burke over-estimated his team and it's costing him at least one Top 3 pick and probably a Top 10 one next season since he won't find many scoring players in free agency to shore up his forward depth. Kessel came from a Boston team that overachieved and frankly, he's a lesser Heatley, he's got a couple of great moves and an excellent shot, but he's not Mat Sundin, or Darryl Sittler. Burke made the big splashes because he's a gambler, but this gamble has given strength to his divisional rival and that could cost them more than a couple of those 4-pointers in the next 10 years.

If the Leafs were finishing top of the conference I'd agree, but they're handing away a first-round pick that will very likely be a top five, and with their salary, goalie and forwards situations being what they are, they may well finish in the basement next year too. Two top-five picks, plus a 2nd and a 3rd, is a helluva price to pay for a team that has no scoring, so-so goalies, and just a couple of prospects. Plus, all those picks go to a division rival. Just awful.
Price fan here!
All I see is another Huet in the making (Halak), similar to Huet the Canadiens will make him famous, and another team will pay for it. In the end the Canadiens come out as the winners.
Halak keep winning and playing your butt off, it will only make the Canadiens better in the end.
Another Win tonight,
Go Habs Go

Oh look everyone the famous Blue_Blanc_et Rouge is back lol!

LoL...really..? I remember the thing you had with him and you made yourself look like a fanboy idiot....so I guess anyone here who witnessed that must be Bleu_Blanc_et_Rouge in your delusional mind huh..? you're sad, very sad.
Wow, you've been a member for one week and you remember everything that happened last month. I guess you just read the boards and then joined up recently and now all of a sudden completely act like that idiot that everyone couldn't stand. lol busted

go make another poll Fanboy...
Pot and kettle there dontcha think.
Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.
Uh, Huet got us a second-round pick. I'd hardly call that winning.
Think Huet would fetch a 2nd round pick today?
If it wasn't for his salary, then yes. His numbers are decent (not great, but not terrible) 2.38 GAA and .898 SV% and he is 26-12-4. He's worth 3 million though, not 5.5.
The Habs would have gotten more for him but he was an impending UFA. That's why he was only worth a second round pick at the time.
Dude, a .898 save% on a team that allows less than 24 shots against per game is pathetic. His numbers are AHL calibre. Huet, even for half his salary wouldn't fetch a 4th rounder now.
either way, it wasn't our doing, is my point
To be fair, Huet busted out at the age of 30. Halak is only 24. He will only get better if anything.
Like the topic title, just trying to help with the HIO stats hehe.
They call me Shane
Just another USELESS stat
CAMMI, GOMEZ,GIONTA,GILL AND MARA 60 GOALS 89 ASSISTS 149 POINTS APROX 23 MILLION
KOIVU, KOVY, KOMI, KOSTO AND HIGGY 44 GOALS 76 ASSISTS 120 POINTS APROX 19-20 MILL
MONTREAL IN A PLAYOFF POSITION (even if you take games in hand into account)
Anaheim, Toronto, Carolina outside looking in, Calgary on the bubble and Ottawa now sruggling but in
Considering that all of those new habs have missed some time this season makes that all the more impressive.
This site has been sent to the minors for some maturity and some new subject matter other than goal tender nonsense.
Ian if it weren't for you and a few (very few) others, you wouldn't see me here!!!!!, I think the average age here is now 11 or 12..
What we need to do is sign BOTH goalies....wait till they are BOTH playing GREAT....and then trade one of them for a top six forward and a pick.
We can't afford to sign both. Wanting to do something and having the dollars to do it are not the same thing. In a perfect world Montreal signs both but the reality dictates a different course.
KERRY FRASER IS ONE OF THE REFS TONIGHT! DAMN!
Sign and trade....it's possible...
You are beating a dead horse triple x,
Not only dead Ian, it is definitely getting ripe. lol
That would be the way to do it but there's no moneys for both at this point.
All the Pricebergs and Halakians need to chill. Price won a long time ago! Montreal will deal a goalie at or before the draft this summer and it will NOT be Price.
This team has too many holes to fill and too little cap space to afford the luxury of two great young goalies. I only hope we can get something good for Halak and I wish him all the best in the future. The team and the fans will sorely miss his goal tending and his humble demeanor.
In the meantime it is pointless to continue the goalie baiting. Right now Halak is the designated number 1, next season Price will be our number 1 goalie.
Halak might go, but Price would not be #1, it's Desjardins.
Dumbest post. EVER.
I'll take the Pepsi Challenge with yesterday's gem: "I wouldn't be surprised to see Carey Price + SK74 + our first pick +another for Edmonton's pick. I'm not saying it will happen but saying I wouldn't be surprised if that kind of an offer was made."
I remember making a comment on that one as well. Good call.
You questioned "Halak might go", "Price would not be #1", or "it's Desjardins"??? dude.
The third is the worst point, but the combination is pretty bad too. I was kidding about the worst post ever anyways. Plenty of posts worse than that. Myself included.
We could sign Halak to a pretty hefty contract (that he totally deserves). OR we can keep Price and sign him for less, build the team around him and be even better.
Price hasn't played the way he wanted to and will be cheap as hell. In a perfect world, I would keep Halak.
But think about it... sign Halak and doom 2-3 legit roster spots?
We could probably sign Price for real close to the same amount he's making right now. He is not a bad goaltender. Like this team, he has been inconcistent. It doesn't mean he is a bad player.
We need to think about the overall team... not just one area.
TripleX,you be one very good Canadiens fan, bravo dude................
think that HALAK should be benched all season and give other players a chance to find themselves
but that's just me
ur crazy buddy
i tell the truth! everyone is thinking it but im telling it
The truth is that cat's suck..
"These head movies make my eyes rain" -Simple Jack
ummm we're talking about hockey here buddy
and not only that but J.M. is easily top 5 coaches
i understand that none of you want to admit to it.
I bet price is counting down the days to when he can finally go back to BC
I'm also counting the days!
mayb even get in a little broke back mountain action
Show a little respect.
meh he's into glue and propane
takes a pretty big person to be racist doesn't it
If Carey Price were playing like the best goaltender in the world right now, no one would say anything about his drinking or whatever.
So many athletes throughout the years have been heavy drinkers and party animals that when it's a guy who's underperforming, he's the goat.
Besides, nobody on this board is a saint. If anything, Carey still has the upper hand cause at least he's making that cheddar.
I don't get what's with people personally bashing him. Like I said, criticize his play all you like... but don't be a prick.
shiatt, i would drink, party, sniff some glue and propane with carey any day of the week.
vader what is your avatar about... it's kinda creepy
Mel Gibson, Kyle... Mel Gibson.
that explains the creepy part
Halak is the Habs no:1 tender period. Now in order to end the Halak vs Price debate I ask this question in order to get the blog names on all the Price fanatics as to alphabetically let it be known that these are the fans of Carey Price(FIRST) and the Montreal Canadiens(SECOND).....O.K. HERE WE GO....Question : Who is the Habs number one goalie right now ?
Simple, the organization has not decared anyone the no.1 position. So the answer is nobody.
Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.
Who is the goalie in front of the twine on any given game day.
Torre Vikingstad
"These head movies make my eyes rain" -Simple Jack
In my opinion there should be no commitment to a #1. They are both playing well enough to play. They both steal games for us and they both have the odd bad game. Keep them both sharp and play both of them.
A little early to be hitting the sauce, no?
